I'm surprised the violin didn't go on fire.. Absolutely articulate and you can definitely feel her emotions; and through her, definitely feel Mendelssohn's emotions..
there are times , like this , when i am completely blown away, by the sheer emotional quality of playing music like this. It amazes me, the observations that some people come up with that have nothing to do with the music, the performer or the performance
i love the way she smiles making it seem so easy and then when i play it it looks like im constipated from trying to play even half as good as this....
My favorite performance for this concertó is this one. It would be amazing yo hear how she performs It now that she is older I would LOVE hear Sarah un person in Costa Rica she is muy favorite violinist
Ive listened to every version of this that I could find on here, Chang, Heifetz, Hahn, Pearlman, etc. Sarah Changs timing and delivery is impeccable. Much better than Hahn even if she does have a better tone. Heifetz plays it too fast for my taste. Pearlman is fantastic, but if you listen to his and this one, you will see he times it very similarly, perhaps Sarah listened to his while preparing.
Woah, put those guns away cowboy. I'm quite familiar with how it feels to do performances, both solo and with orchestra. After al, I've been playing for over 10 years, and I'm still going strong! I'm just saying I'm surprised that, for someone who did Carmen Fantasy at 10, she actually got too much adrenaline in the first place. I love listening to her, and I think she did a great job in "covering it up," since she still reached the top note. Sorry if I got you fired up like that.
"the most perfect concerto wrote for this instrument".. Nobody could agree to that.. Even if you love this concerto, and I do, you cannot forget the brahms, the tchaikovsky, the Sibelius.. They are just as good if not even better
@Mecinimi they are both wonderful in their own styles and interpretation. it is very hard to compare... mendelssohn would've loved what they've done to his piece
Interesting. I never knew she was this good. I love Kurt Masur always. I still prefer others doing this - Kyung Wha Chung. It is unfair to compare her to this level though. She is still fantastic.
Oh, man! if you think this is good, you should see her play Tchaikovsky's violin concerto! She was fourteen when she did that one!!!!! (FYI, check the related videos box--- you see the pink dress?)
@biobobz it means that the piece is mainly written in the key signature of e minor(relative from g major) its judt a way to identify the piece and don't worry, it wasn't as dum b question at all!
@RockoOscar Oh that sucks... That's is a GREAT compliment nontheless =) I was almost 19...now I'm 21. But only about a month ago I started to practice consistently (which to me is 1 hour a day...IF one hour) so I'm now using you as an inspiration HAHAHA. But I don't think I'll ever be able to squeeze 3 hours into my schedule. =(
man she must be saying "what was i thinking when i decide to wear that dress?!" haha never the less I LOVE HER, super talented woman, wish she was my wife :D
@tonaltenacity Which performance of Hahn's mendelssohn have you witnessed? Are you talking about Hahn's recording of the Mendelssohn violin concerto? Because, i just want to point out, then we would have to compare Hahn's recording and Sarah's recording. Recordings are put together from different takes and are "spliced" together to make them sound perfect...you can't compare a recording and a live performance (unless the recording is a live performance which is another category)
@RockoOscar Well, yeah. Even practicing for 5 hours a day, only having 1 year and 4 months since you first started I THINK it's pretty damn amazing =) HAHA I do the same thing, Last week I had an exam but the day before I was practicing violin... lol It's addicting.
Really wished around @ 5:12 she would swoop down the dynamics so she could build the whole intensity back up, but overall I really like her energy here.
@tonaltenacity i am not a violinist & i don't know this piece note for note but i think it is more accurate to say her figers slipping & making a mistake. she is human, she was only in her teens when she performed this
For those who say anyone who dislikes this video is deaf: I do not enjoy listening this performance, and let me be free to make some critical points(I am by no means saying that I can do better). 1:03 ~1:05 i don't think she intended that sound. 1:12~1:13 the first e string bowing is not so clean 1:17~1:19 discordance between the soloist and the orchestra. I think it is quite obvious. 1:22 obvious mistake 1:35~1:37 overly intense, though there might be different opinions overall intense, e.g. 4:17
@tonaltenacity Very true. I'm actually working on this for an audition, I just think she went too fast for her to handle it. That is easily one of the hardest sections in the piece if taken at a speed like that.
@RockoOscar omg! 1 year and 4 months and you are already learing this? That's really fast! How did you do it? How much do you practice a day? sorry so many questions haha
I have the same problem, and it does not happen with other vids. It is not much, but I was trying to study her bowing technique, and it is a little out of sync.
@AltaicPride01 The tempo is not steady - the tone is often very hard - it is played very technically and without the great warmth and sentiment sensible in this extraordinary composition.
I think that this version of Mendelssohn is amazing and if people don't have something nice to say, just dont post anything. Great job Sarah!
best mendelssohn peroformance ever
absolutely one of the best pieces I've heard
I'm surprised the violin didn't go on fire.. Absolutely articulate and you can definitely feel her emotions; and through her, definitely feel Mendelssohn's emotions..
I absolutely agree. She is at her best in this performance, in total command of the instrument and the music.
One of my idols growing up. Pure genius!!
she plays it so effortlessly..
there are times , like this , when i am completely blown away, by the sheer emotional quality of playing music like this.
It amazes me, the observations that some people come up with that have nothing to do with the music, the performer or the performance
Wonderful performance! Sarah Chang might have been the best violin virtuoso since Heifetz.
This was an outstanding performance! I get really aggravted when people comment on her slight mistakes, it's not like they could do better :)
wow. amazing... sarah chang always perform a marvelous performances...
I just love watching sarah play everything.
She's fantastic, has a great vibrato technique is pretty.
Great performance by Madam Sarah Chang of Maestro Felix Mendelssohn. Thanks you You Tube!
No Madam at 15.....a young Cailin oig deas.....
great performance!! she makes me shiver
God has smiled on her with talent & me when He allows me to truly hear her.
Wonerfull! Am I crying? Yes, I am.
shes so talented...and she gets the emotion and mechanics perfect! love it!
i love the way she smiles making it seem so easy and then when i play it it looks like im constipated from trying to play even half as good as this....
she played it with such ease!! I am so jealous of her. I need to work really damn hard to play an advanced piece...
the 3rd movement always puts a smile on my face when I hear it :D
WOW WOW WOW Sarah Chang.
Wow. thanks for posting the video. Appreciate it. Just too good. Rgds
She's Too Good
no words can describe my pleasure listening to her performance, i will listen as long as I live ..............
She played her socks off!!! Awesome!!!
The sun sets, the suck rises, we grow older, and this girl becomes a greater violin player whose playing is full of praise and emotion
Mendelssohn was a genius! And Chang is a worthy interpreter.
clear, perfect performing
Agree bravo
Perfection!
She was only 15 years old in that performance. She was born in 1980.
i love her and her interpretation so much!! makes me smile every time i see this :)
Cindy Niu 1
Such a beautiful piece. Video is slightly delayed, but a great execution. Mendelssohn is such a genius!
And she leaves me speachless once again! :-D
My favorite performance for this concertó is this one. It would be amazing yo hear how she performs It now that she is older I would LOVE hear Sarah un person in Costa Rica she is muy favorite violinist
She is incredible live!! Been blessed to see her three times thus far ❤
Stunning!
emm.. this is quite a splendid performance! I love the dynamic contextual paradoxics
i like this interpretation. not flawless, but a distillation of human experience.
Soo......damn.....good....
Her bow is practically dancing on the strings
Sarah es un amor !!!!!! genial concierto
Made my day!
thanx for posting one of the best!
Go Sarah Chang!
she can play Carmen Fantasy (by Sarasate) when shes nine, u can also check it on youtube.
Ive listened to every version of this that I could find on here, Chang, Heifetz, Hahn, Pearlman, etc.

Perlman and Chang had the same teacher/professor, Dorothy Delay.
listen to milstein's version

You cannot hide talent like this
Amazing
never heard it played better!
Great performance

@CostonFrijoles that's why we have to make theese little breaks between movements... for coughing people :D
good luck on your essay! seems like you'll have fun writing it haha
I love that squeak between the two trills at 5:09!

Technically wonderful. But I think Sarah and Mazur were worried about catching the last bus home.
감사합니다
Good...Great Violinist
@CostonFrijoles So they won't cough during the best part of this heavenly masterpiece ;)
If any concerto is to get the title of "most perfect concerto", it would be Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. Of course its always open to interpretation.
man she must be saying "what was i thinking when i decide to wear that dress?!" haha never the less I LOVE HER, super talented woman, wish she was my wife :D

All that coughing at the beginning...
