'Jewish-Free Zones?' Berkeley Student Groups' Vote Is 'Tinged with Antisemitism'

- Nine student groups at the University of California's Berkeley School of Law have passed a new bylaw pledging to deny access to all pro-Israel speakers.
Their rule says they "will not invite speakers that have expressed and continued to hold views or host/sponsor/promote events in support of Zionism, the apartheid state of Israel, and the occupation of Palestine."
Berkeley Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, who has said he's a progressive Zionist, told The J that "many students" view the bylaw as "antisemitic" because "to say that anyone who supports the existence of Israel - that's what you define as Zionism - shouldn't speak would exclude about, I don't know, 90 percent or more of our Jewish students."
Chemerinsky told the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) there are 1,400 students and more than 100 student organizations at the school. Only a tiny fraction of those groups signed on to SJP's request-and most had no idea this was happening.

We know from history that if authorities can take your voice, their next target is often your life. If they silence your words, take that as a potential warning to your life. If Israel is doing wrong and if what they say is true that Israel is committing war crimes or crimes against humanity or terrorizing people, why would that be the responsibility of UC Berkeley to address? Shouldn’t their priority be educating as many fine students in the best way they can, not sanctioning peoples of other countries?

I feel for the Jewish as well as citizens everywhere these days, at the mercy of what particular leadership may be doing. Vast shame. I feel so lucky to have had a celebratory multicultural community to grow up in. Taught me to see beauty in differences and have as much respect for others as I hope would be given to me. To look to understand rather than for friction, to look at what we can appreciate together rather than what we might not agree with about one another. It's so confusing. The fog of war. But if you see patterns and scan headlines for overarching themes, it becomes clear why some publications spin thing one way or leave out others. You can scan those in 7-20 minutes from as many sources around the globe. What once may have been hidden becomes clear.

Wonderful decision We are dealing with a fundamental crisis of the enlightenment and it goes all the way back to Napoleon's emancipation of the jews in france. I am always amazed that classical antisemitism still exists in the modern era. I am unwaveringly loyal to America, I was born here, as were my parents, their parents, etc. and I am proud of this country and immensely patriotic - maybe excessively so. You have no idea about what you’re talking about, no idea. From what you say, it’s as if you’ve never met a Jewish person in your life.
And in case you’re living in medieval times yourself, our rights are G-d given and inalienable, as it says in our Declaration of Independence. Napoleon didn’t emancipate the Jews in France, just as government doesn’t give us our rights, he merely recognized the state of emancipation, which was already given by G-d in the first place.
This country is great because of the constitution of the people who laid down its foundation, and the constitution of our federal government. Our very first right specifically amended, is literally that of free exercise of religion.
Maybe you envy Germany of a certain era, but last time I checked, this is still America. And in this country, I can be proudly Jewish and proudly American. The two are mutually conducive to a better version of both, not mutually exclusive, as in one or the other.
