Ya gotta love having a one-of-a-kind. Watching that process and the work that went into building it didn't take into consideration all the engineering that went into building that so it works. Then you add the electrical know-how and you have a build that was done, not by a team, but one person doing every aspect of what was required. You have to know how to weld too. Most of us coming up with that idea might know one aspect of the build, but not the knowledge that it took to do it all. I love that thing!
I can't wait for a city employee to see it and talk about how there's a drilling rig on a property in town. Then they grab the address and look up what permits were issued and not see one for a drilling rig and knock on the door demanding we stop drilling whatever it is we're drilling for. It'll requires playing it up big when that happens, come up with some BS about mineral rights and watch them come unglued with you being sued if you don't stop drilling immediately...milk it as long as possible. Bring out your voice activated little pocket recorder so you can post that conversation on TH-cam so we call have a good laugh. Terrific job, Brandon, it looks great!

You have great skills, and make it look easy!
Can you tell me how you sharpen your drill bits? Freehand on a wheel, or with a jig like a drill-master, or what works best for you?
    Thanks a lot!

@quadgrannie my buddy was renting a place that had an old antique one for a yard art display; the smallest one I've ever seen, and I've been looking to buy one like it for years. After giving up, I decided to make one.

That's pretty cool...... What kind of welder do you use. I'm learning myself right now and what size wire do you prefer? 😎✌️. Thanks

I noticed you used nuts and bolts to mount the board to the back of the solar panel - self-tapping screws would have been easier - but then this thing wouldn't be built to last for decades!

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Self tappers put some strain on the metal its drilling into, both in the downward pressure, and the twisting once the screw bites; the metal thickness of the frame didn't feel like it could withstand that stress without bucking or bending. I tried to make this thing to last for quite some time and it probably will, but that solar panel is probably the weakest link.

Brilliant! Are you using flux or gas to weld. Sure be nice if you'd update your DIY outboard motor stand in steel, hint, hint :)

Flux. I forgot how to switch it back over to gas.
      So flux it is!

Initially I kind of questioned the purpose of this project but with some thought I have come up with a number of purposes.
    1. Practicing welding and fab work
    2. practicing wiring up the solar controller and control circuitry
    3. a bit of irony having a solar powered oil pump jack
    and most importantly
    4. triggering any NIMBY neighbors you might have
    Great project, thanks for posting

I thought of throwing in an end card explaining why I was making it; However an artist doesn't have to explain their art.
But one of the points was going to be that I'm a better welder now than when I started.

@@BrandonsGarage In my experience, the best way to get better at welding is to actually weld so I would call that a successful project.

I thought it was for a project. There's man many ppl with small oil springs on their properties. And these mini pump jacks can pretty much power your homestead as well as have extra to sell/stockpile. So so many uses. I'm sure he will get an offer to buy it.
