- Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were lovers who had been trying to make it in music for years. After some fiery arguments, years of failures and poverty, Stevie decided to quit music for good. One night she put all that pain into a song she called Landslide. Almost over night after writing that classic she and Lindsey met Fleetwood Mac and they were asked to join up. They recorded the white album with song of their own to add and the rest is history. How Landslide changed all of that.

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason the song came up short. On previous episodes we have covered In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel, In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins, and Tiny Dancer by Elton John. But for today’s episode we are telling the story behind Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.
So, when Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were dropped from Polydor Records in the fall of 1973, it felt like “the world had ended”. That’s how Stevie put it. The professional and romantic couple had thought they had created a brilliant debut record. It had been years of work to get to that point. But this unique blend of folk, rock, and country debut was almost immediately dismissed.
In fact, some Polydor execs disliked it so much that they didn’t even want to release it. The songs, they said, lacked imagination and had zero commercial potential. As a result, the label virtually ignored the duo, who went by the name Buckingham Nicks. Refusing to provide promotional support for the release, it was a surefire set up for failure.
But opinions weren’t exactly positive either. Billboard dismissed the pair as a lackluster and they were outright ignored by music industry tastemakers Creem, Hit Parader, and Rolling Stone. Devastated and depressed, 25-year-old Stevie Nicks considered quitting music altogether, and thought about leaving LA to move back home with her parents.
But by the start of 1974, she was still there with Lindsey. The two hadn’t given up yet. So, while Buckingham stayed home to write new demos for a follow-up album, Stevie went to work as a waitress. The job she found was at a roaring 1920s themed restaurant called Clementines where she got to dress up in flapper attire.
Poll: What is your pick for Fleetwood Mac's greatest song?
All of them 🙂
(Add; all right, that's disingenuous, I''ll just say Silver Springs guts me every time)
Rhiannon
The Chain
Silver Springs, Songbird, Dreams, You Make Loving Fun, Tusk, Don't Stop, just to name a few 😊
I'm torn between "Oh Well" and "Tusk". Of course most people would go with some of their other well known songs.
A few years ago, my mother died suddenly of a heart attack. I intentionally did not listen to any music during this grieving time in order not to associate her death with a song. I had to drive across country to get her ashes and the trip was long. When I returned home and a few days passed, Landslide was the first song I heard. Stevie was one of my mom's favorite artists. That song still packs a wallop to me every time I hear it. It will forever be associated with my mother. The power of music.
Wow, how tragic.
So sorry for your loss.
Sorry for your loss. I too have that sense of association/impact with certain music I listened to with my father. It's why Tusk is my favorite Fleetwood Mac song. Power of music indeed.
So sorry 💕
🥹beautiful, thanks for sharing…may your mom Rest In Peace
Stevie Nicks. Never has there been a voice and overall sound as unique as hers. You can mistake some singers, you cant mistake her.
You called it. So distinct.
Her and Janis Joplin
*Yes! Absolutely - her voice is one in a billion. Maybe POR can do a video of the Top 10 (or 20) 'unique/hard to replicate' voices of music (or has he already?)? lol*
_Alongside Stevie, I'd add Karen Carpenter, Sting, & Elton John. Of course, there are many others._
And to teenage boys who only listened to hard rock her unique beauty was very inviting and got us to listen.
She’s a boss!
I can't imagine how much poorer the world would have been if Stevie Nicks had given up. One of my favourite singers. Her voice is incomparable. So haunting and beautiful.
You forgot “GRAVELY“. 😆
I agree wholeheartedly
I turn into a bowl of mush when I hear her sing Landslide, Talk To Me, and Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You.
She is the human equivalent of a masterpiece.
So privileged to have been family friends with her parents growing up in Paradise Valley! Great time in my life….I really loved that family and her mom was my second mom. Bittersweet memories of them all…
It's astonishing to think that Stevie wrote this in her 20's before the fame, fortune, and a lot of future life experience. Such wise, poetic words -- as if Stevie were consulting her older self for advice. Landslide transcends time and generations -- played at everything from graduations to funerals -- and will still be in 100 years.
Young Stevie was an old soul in many ways.
She may have been only in her 20’s but she had already experienced a lot of things that most people either never experience or at least not until later in their life. I can tell you by the time I turned 30 I had already lived several lifetimes and not all of them good. I joined the army at 17, turned 18 while cleaning the mess hall during training at Ft Benning Georgia, by 19 I had taken the life of another human bing, albeit he was the enemy but still I had to use a knife so as to be silent. This meant I had to wrap my arm around him and hold him tightly against me. In that moment it was as if time had slowed way down and I could hear him breathing as I approached, I could smell his sweat, when I grabbed him he was so surprised he froze and I could hear his heartbeat beating in his chest. When I drew my blade across his throat it sunk in deep and blood squirted out, it was hotter than I thought it would be. His legs gave out and he slowly slumped down on the ground. There’s more to tell but you get the point.
@@prepperjonpnw6482 Wait, is this about Stevie Nicks or about you? Sounds like you're propping yourself up with that long murder exposition, something that can have been summarized in a sentence and then shift back to the song and the performer...but after the first sentence it's all you and your demons--if that's what this is. Sorry you had to go through that (if you did, which I'm not sure of considering how long you lingered on it--can't trust anything in TH-cam comment sections, so many people just yearning for attention). But anyway, yeah, lot of people live through hard times and do hard things. Stevie Nicks tapped into that at an early age, she's a great songwriter/singer.
She was a failing legend when she wrote it.
@@Lee-vg1fg I’m about her age. If only I had been half as wise and talented. I was still popping zits in the mirror.
My friend accidentally went through the wrong sound stage door and walked into Stevie Nicks rehearsing with band on a Studio Lot. She said “No worries” and invited him in for a chat with everybody. They had a laugh and he had a great memory. He was a Grip with a tool belt and street clothes and she was asking him about his work and life in general. Seemed pretty down to earth for all she has been through.
I was 16 years old in 1975. At the time I worked for a company which was a nationally known sound company which worked with many major, big name music acts of that time. The other part of the company (where I worked,) was the retail division which sold everything from CB radios to high end, high fidelity stereo equipment, as well as speakers and sound equipment which had been used during many of the rock and roll tours. We always had great rock and roll playing in the show room on some phenomenal equipment. One of the vendors who stopped by the store every other week knew that our assistant manager was a big fan of Fleetwood Mac and told us that they had just released this new album, with a new line up in the band. Along with albums by other artists, he provided the White Album, which we were soon playing in the showroom. Now remember, at the time I was a typical 16 year old kid who was not known for a lot of deep thinking, but when I heard Landslide, I was more than impressed at how profound the lyrics were… Years later, my daughter chose this song to be played for the Father/Daughter Dance at her wedding... Still very profound and personal to me.
I absolutely love "Landslide". I'm 60 now and I've had a lot of my own challenges. Things are better now, but when I hear "Landslide", I remember the tough times. More importantly, I remember Mom and Dad and how much they loved and supported me. Thank you Stevie.
I feel the same. Fifty-three here. Many life challenges that I could never have predicted.
52, and the same!! I wasn't one to try various drugs of any kind, but who knows what I would have done, or not done IF I had lost the support of my parents when I became pregnant at 15 and had him 1 month after turning 16!!! All I know is that I am super grateful for them and my family as a whole for not judging and just accepting and I'm thankful every day that GOD was there through it all to support me when I just needed a little nudge or assurance and for sure other times when he definitely carried me tohelp me through something i needed the extra added strength comfort and love to make it through many a day or process and learning the ins and outs of adulting, navigating the health care system to keep my children covered, taking care of myself and my children by keeping a job, keeping a roof over our heads and the utilities on!!!
I'm 52 and Stevie Nicks is my lifelong crush! She encompasses everything divine and not so divine about women! Her sultry voice and amazing looks set her apart! She is true magick and magical!
Without all that pain, we wouldn't have gotten Rumors and some of the greatest music ever.
Lindsey Buckingham is grossly overlooked as a guitarist and singer!
Just saw her in Nashville with Billy Joel. She just knocked it out of the park. And everyone sings along and we all held our phones up. It was beautiful. Like a stadium full of fireflies while Stevie Knicks sings. Magical.
Amazing that the original version of "Landslide" never broke the top 50 on Billboard Hot 100! Definitely one of the very few songs that still gets good airplay yet never charted. Such a gorgeous, soul-inflicting song that so many people can relate to...
It's such a strange thing.
I know, right? It’s very sad that a song as amazing as this failed to go to the top 10.
The Smashing Pumpkins covered it in a pretty solid version in 1994.
Dixie Chicks did a great cover, too 🤙
Forget the top-50 .....
It was never on The Hot-100,
and for a very good reason.
It wasn't released as a single.
Back in the 70s a song had to be
released as a single in order to
chart on The Hot-100.
I watched her perform this live at a concert with Fleetwood Mac. At one point during the song, you could see her dry her eyes, you can tell this is a very meaningful and emotional piece for her.
Yeah, Landslide moistens many an eye😢
@@karlmckinnell2635You'd have to be basically dead inside if this song doesn't move some part of you as it's a song everybody can relate to in one way or another. It's a beautiful song about struggle and hope 😔
I was born in 1970. Fleetwood Mac has always been one of my favorites. I’ve taken Landslide with me throughout my life. The meaning, knowledge and love for it has evolved with me. I can’t be grateful enough to Stevie Nicks and the entire band for their music.
While many people wax poetically about Stevie Nicks, only a few ever mention what a songwriting genius and phenomenal guitarist that Lindsey Buckingham was. Some of the most memorable of FM's songs were written by him.
There was a story ( don't know if it's true ) that the band members told Buckingham that he had to use a guitar pick.
One of the most overlooked guitar players! It's disgusting that he isn't given more "praise" for his playing/songwriting!!!
Ugh there was sooo many better singers and talents I can never get the big hoopla about her . as a back up singer for Fleetwood mac though she did okay.... but the rest of the band was sooooooo much better both in writing and musicianship.
Agree... great vocalist too
But he has such an ego and talks down to everyone. I love the way he plays all stringed instruments, but his songs in Fleetwood Mac just never did as well as the girl's. Also, his solo career never did as well as Stevie's, he would get boosts for his career by doing albums and tour with the Mac. Shows he head was bigger than his body.
This song is a masterpiece, it doesn't take me back to a time or place. It seems I've carried it with me and as I've matured, the meaning of the song has changed with me. One thing stayed the same, it still makes me cry.
This song didn't need to chart. Some songs go way beyond charts. It was a staple on Rock radio from the late 70s onward. In the 80s I already considered it one of their greatest hits having heard it so much on the radio. And I'm so happy it became a classic - it is just SO beautiful, almost heart-wrenching in its beauty. Thank you Stevie.
Absolutely love what you are doing. At 58, I have always loved the stories behind the music, and people. Thank you.
Stevie and Lindsey are one of the greatest songwriting duos. Stevie's melancholic and emotive voice perfectly complemented Lindsey's masterful fingerpicking guitar style. Landslide is such a beautiful song. It leaves a lasting impression.
Professor! Long-time fan, here, but you truly outdid yourself on this one. My wife and I are HUGE Stevie Nicks fans, and "Landslide" is the apex of what we love about her. We both knew of Stevie's and Lindsey's tumultuous relationship, but no clue exactly where this song came from. Only you, my friend, could fully explain that genesis. It's cathartic, heart-rending and wrenching... the despair floods any soul listening to it... but the silvery sliver of hope gleams like a mirror shard in the sun. So powerful, so enchanting. Thank you, Prof.
That has to be the most haunting vocal ever recorded. Even if the words don’t apply to your situation the sound of her voice pierces the soul.
Yes for a woman , and Mike McDonald on the men’s side ..
I saw her live over the summer. I told myself I wouldn’t cry when she played this song. Obviously I did. To hear such a masterpiece played live by the creator herself is something I’ll never forget.
Also, thank you for the video.
I don't remember a time when Stevie's voice wasn't part of my life. Her music, and that of Fleetwood Mac, is a permanent part of my soul. Long Live The Good Witch.
Absolutely. To Stevie, she is so inspiring. Blessed be Stevie.
Back in '82 I did a "Famous Person" report in 10th grade and my choice was Stevie Nicks. There was no Google back then so all my research was done the old fashioned way. I found out so much about her that I never expected then. As I grew older and more life experience, I found that what I had found out was typical rock star addiction problems and personal torment. That's what it takes to make art. Nothing comes easy. There were also problems with the record label over songs being too long with topics that didn't fare too well with the general public. In the long run they became the Fleetwood Mac that we fell in love with. Without Stevie it wouldn't be the group we love.
I had to do a famous person report last month! I did it on Seth Rogen, who was actually born in 1982! Stevie Nicks has been through and persevered through so much. She is a strong woman.
“The Dance” produced two songs which are arguably better than the original studio recordings. “Silver Springs” and “Landslide” both benefit from the tone of Nicks’s older voice and world weary tone.
Truth - and “The Dance” is pretty much the definitive performance of “Silver Springs”.
Her emotion singing Silver Springs still gives me chills whenever I hear it.
I loved "Landslide" when it first came out, but the track on "The Dance" was even better. This is also true for "Silver Springs".
Definitely agree that "Silver Springs" is absolutely better than the original studio recording. In fact, that may very well be the best live recording the band has ever had.
The Dance version of Landslide is nowhere near as good as the original. It's OK for a live track but that's about it. I cringe every time the radio plays it instead of the original.
Sometimes a song "gets real". This is one of those songs that just leaves me gobsmacked. The tone of the melody conveying the drama without being maudlin. The ability to phrase the lyrics to elicit empathy is just awe inspiring. I am as amazed as the next guy about this specific song not being "a hit". I suspect the length of the song played a big role in that. I can hear AOR program directors saying "It's too long." A lame reason to my notion, but I'm not the one trying to run a profitable radio station.
One fact makes this song so absolutely special. As far as I hear it (since I cannot read sheet music), the chord progression through the whole song never comes to a resolution. This makes this song so heartbreaking, so amazing. And then you read the lyrics for the first time because you never noticed them as a German music enthusiast. And then you realize that everything, really everything has its rhyme. Stevie Nicks wrote a song that should last forever in our hearts. It's so moving, so sad, so brilliant. I love this track.
A agonizing and beautiful story. I was in high school when it came out and I loved Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks. They are still one of my favorite all time bands. Thank you for bringing this story out.
It's mind boggling to me that the studio hated Buckingham-Nicks so much. What a phenomenal album. Hopefully they'll re-release it at some point, if they can ever agree to do so.
That was the first album I ever bought in 1973! I got it with my babysitting money
In their defence, the Eagles weren't out and accepted, yet. In a post-Eagles world, Buckingham-Nicks becomes an epic peer to that country rock sound. The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac became album juggernauts around the same period. Buckingham-Nicks had an achievement that came too early to be appreciated and that's harsh.
I loved that album. Still have it.
I love this album
It was that time period that music producers wanted a new and different sound and were knocking back one awesome rock band after another. And disco was born.
When Stevie sings this song, you can hear the emotional rollercoaster. You can hear the emotions coming out. The heartbreak of lost dreams and lovers to the highs of finally achieving your dreams. Lessons learned and relearned and the wishes of some things having turned out a little different than you hoped and things turning out as expected. Even some things turning out better than imagined
Great episode. The only point of correction was that Stevie’s parents sent her a bus ticket back to CA from Colorado, not a plane ticket, as her father was chairman of Greyhound at the time and she had free access to travel by bus.
Greyhound was on strike so she probably took a plane.
Landslide. Such a beautiful gorgeous song. When my late husband/partner and I were dating and in a long distance relationship, he would drive the whole 9-10 hours to come and see me. As we were getting to know each other i told him of my great love and fascination with snow ❄️. I grew up in the desert, where it never snows, and that’s a big part as to why I love it so much. He would later tell me as he would be driving he could see the snow covered mountains, and as he also knew of my EXTREME LOVE for Stevie Nicks, I would show him the song, “Landslide”, and he would watch the snow ❄️ covered hills, in the mountains and think of Landslide at the same time! We finally got together and I moved in with him. And he would always always tell me whenever “Landslide” would come on the radio, he said he would IMMEDIATELY think of me! 😊🥰 and it became one of our songs, as I sang it to him after he suddenly passed away, “well I’ve been afraid of changing, because I’ve built my life around you” now every time I hear it I think of him. I cry, 😢 because I never got to say goodbye to him before he suddenly passed. So the song has come full circle ⭕️ for us! He always thought of me,,,,,,now I always think of him!
God I miss him. My heart aches for him. I dedicate it to him, my Kenny Gourley!
I love you Kenny, I love you.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Stevie Nicks the greatest female singer. This is my voice range, I love her voice. No auto tune just raw. It's great.
Just going down the rabbit hole of memories. This was always one of my 70s, ballad favorite songs. When I separated from my husband in 1998 after 25 1/2 year marriage and 30 years together, I felt like Stevie wrote this song for me. My sons were 14 & 18 and the lyrics of the song took on a whole new meaning for me. I’ve never seen Fleetwood Mac live, but I saw Stevie Nicks in her live concert with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders opening for her in 2016. An incredible, memorable concert!!!! I have a tickets to see her again this December at the same venue, Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, CA. Can’t wait!
Dear Professor...awesome job on covering this iconic artist. You have a genuine talent. Thanks for sharing it. ✌
Stevie Nicks is an Incredible Poet. Her sensitivity, introspection, observational skills are genius. The Voice is Unique for it's time and hers, but actually reminds me of stylings wayyy back in the day. Incredible story of dues Paid. The Payoff, Rumors and More no less. Landslide is one of those tunes that grow with you as you get older. I'm 62 now and it's meaning is even deeper now.
And she’s been going strong ever since! Stevie’s an absolute survivor!
No question. Thanks Robster.
She has kept on beating the odds in her life!
"...children get older, and I'm getting older too...." Hurts every time.
It's a dose of reality.
I relate to this so much as I am 16 and will eventually graduate from high school and college. It will be sooner than I think.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Those lyrics haunted me then at your age as I aged out of childhood and 10 times worse now in my mid-50's as my own kids have grown up and are now 21 and 19. So devastatingly haunting those 7 words in that simple lyric.
@@alangil40 Time flies.
Stevie was a grownup and not taking the bullshit any more.
I have always loved this song. Now that I know the story behind it. I can't listen without shedding some tears. Nobody and I mean NOBODY sings this song with the heart that Stevie Nicks does. She owns it.
Certainly the following two statements have been carved into the granite of the ether world of the internet, however, I will strike the hammer on the chisel once more.
Thank you for bringing us the stories behind the music that shaped our coming of age years.
And, lastly, I'm glad your out there professor!
Rock on brother! Rock on.
Wow! Thanks Professor. I never get tired of hearing you tell the stories of these stars and what happened in their lives to get them where they are. I am so glad that Stevie pulled this song from her heart and shared it with the world. Also, hearing how her parents stood behind her and then how Buckingham and Nix merged with Fleetwood Mac to produce some of the best music this world has ever heard. Thank you for sharing their story with us.
My most prominent memory of this song was seeing them live, not 12 feet away in October 1975. What an experience in a small student union hall on a college campus in Pennsylvania. A night I shall never forget.
RIP to our Songbird. ♥️
✌🏼😎
I love when these stories trace a line straight through part of my life when the music was being written and released and I have a strong connection with it.
The very first concert my then girlfriend and I went to together was Stevie Nicks at the Kingswood Music Theatre at Canada's Wonderland in August 1991. It was an acoustic set which we totally loved as we sat on the hill looking down and enjoying the show. Fast forward to the fall of 2016 and I found out Stevie was coming to town ,so I bought 2 tickets and took that same "girlfriend" to the Air Canada Centre as an early celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary. Needless to saw we love us some Stevie Nicks and her music has been a part of the soundtrack of our lives together.

She said with complete and total sarcasm!!! LOL!!! But you really did make me cry, you just didn't do anything wrong, lol, Nope, you touched my heart by me hearing/feeling/seeing the love in your words and actions!!! To the contrary of wrong, It sounds very much like you did everything right!!!

You're welcome and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you as well!!!!
Some great concerts there back in the day.
This song has brought me to tears more than once. I feel her pain when I hear it. Stevie is one of my favorite singer/songwriters of all times. Fleetwood Mac is one of my favorite bands.
Fleetwood Mac, one of my all time favorite bands, and “Fleetwood Mac” and “Rumors”, two of the greatest albums ever. Fleetwood Mac is not the same without any of the five “classic” lineup.
I would also put Mirage/Tango in the Night in that list as well!
I was not really a fan of Fleetwood Mac… until I heard the song, “Never Going Back”… Lindsay’s guitar work is impeccable and the harmonies between Lindsay and Stevie are other worldly magical… to see these two perform it live, is pretty much a relationship religious experience.
I adore Lindsay's guitar on that track. It's kinda reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel's The Boxer.
Exactly
Never going back Again is Lindsay's masterpiece IMO.
@@rodsmolter5046 I agree 100%! Beautiful guitar song…
I can listen to that song over and over and not get tired of it.
I remember hearing this song for the first time and sitting with friends in silence afterward. We were each in different places in life, but still determined to move forward toward our dreams. Stevie Nicks captured our hearts, minds, and became our voice.
I love hearing this song from her as her being older. It means so much more of a different kind of thing looking at it from an older person's perspective.
Adam this is one of my favorite POR submissions by far. Your telling of the story had me choked up! The white album will remain as one of my favorites just because the craftsmanship of it, not to mention that it was “one of those records” where all of the cuts were epic. Thanks for this one for sure…
Stevie Nicks is one of my all time favorite artists. Her lyrics are mysterious and tantalizing weaved within incredible music. 40 years after hearing Landslide for the first time it still shakes and strikes awe within me. There are very few songs that have that effect on me. This will for ever be the greatest song she wrote as well as one of the greatest among rock-n-roll.
I absolutely love Stevie Nicks. As a high schooler in the 90's, I have to say, I also love Hole's version of this song too. That beautiful haunting voice was my childhood and what I come back to now, but that grungy version was perfect for the angst we all had.
I was born in '73, so I've never known a world without this song in it really- and I've loved it from the first time I heard it as a kid. It immediately brings up a sweet sadness, sort of feels like fall- and it makes you think of your own past, your own journey- what you see in the snow-covered hill, looking back at you. Plus- I had a crush on Stevie Nicks, always thought she was gorgeous- that never hurts.
I wasn't a big fan of Fleetwood Mac initially. After meeting my future wife which Fleetwood was one of her favorite bands, especially Stevie Nick's, I come to really love their music. My wife passed away last September. Now everytime I hear their music, especially Stevie's, I reflect on our life together over the time we were together and remembering her.
Imagine a world without Stevie's lyrics and voice.
I don't know that I'd even like music if Stevie hadn't made such an impact on the industry.
Not possible
I have an old friend that probably wishes this daily lol 😆 she absolutely hates her
Summer of '77. City Park concert in New Orleans. The line-up in order of appearance: Foreigner, Bob Segar, Heart, Fleetwood Mac. Over imbibing in the hot sun, I passed out when Foreigner took the stage with 'Feels Like the First Time', and I woke up hours later with Fleetwood Mac signing off with 'Go Your Own Way'. Slept through the whole damn concert. Oh well. That was the 70's.
Stevie and this song are so unique. There’s never been a voice like hers. Whenever she sings “children get older, I’m getting older too” it brings tears to my eyes.
Me too!
Her voice is magical. Rooms On Fire is my favourite of her solo tracks. It really lit up the summer of 1989 as one of those songs that sounded great on the radio. I did not know until recently that it is about a woman who is not able to have children, so a sensitive subject. It reminds me of being 19 and having a future ahead of me. She has not had huge solo success in the UK but Fleetwood Mac were and still are huge too. Sara is one of my favourite Fleetwood Mac tracks, Stevie Nicks' voice is superb on it.
I LOVE "Rooms on Fire!" I remember getting that album on cassette when I was in high school, and I wore it out! I loved the video for it, also!
I agree. Rooms on Fire is her best song.
....I ONLY remember the Summer of 1989, BECAUSE of "Rooms On Fire"!! ...we were bogged down by "NKOTB" mania then, so, that tune was on me turntable for QUITE the while......
@@RBS_ NKOTB were dire. I Beg Your Pardon Kon Kan, Miss You Like Crazy Natalie Cole ( again) and Ferry Cross The Mersey ( remake after the Hillsborough football stadium disaster) in April 1989 were all big hits in the UK.
I love Sara. My favorite Mac track as well.
Brother, you are one hell of a storyteller. This nearly brought me to tears. It’s time for a book bro. I’ll be the first to buy it.
The Buckingham Nicks album is an amazing standout that was pretty much totally ignored everywhere.
The long gone and sadly missed Medusa Sound record store in Birmingham Alabama turned me on to it. There was another store in Tuscaloosa, whose name I don't recall it was also pushing the album on everyone they could. As a result Buckingham Nick's actually played some live dates in Alabama
If you poke around on TH-cam and put in either Buckingham Nicks Tuscaloosa or Birmingham you'll find them
Yup there is a live recording of Rhiannon at one of the B-Nicks shows. Pretty cool. Frozen Love got a LOT of radio play in Bham. Strange city.
They played dates in other cities in the South. We knew of Buckingham Nicks in Atlanta, but had no clue who FM was...
Hearing this song live and hearing the audience singing along is real special. It has meaning for all of us, as together with Stevie, “we are all getting older now.” Glad it has been included in every concert of her’s and Fleetwood Mac’s.
There is no one like Stevie. The first exposure I had to her was with Rooms on Fire. I was 13, and I thought she was magical. She felt like a fairy tale to me.
Although we’ll never see their magic on stage together again, I took my GRANDson to Rumors of Fleetwood Mac tribute band. They took us on a journey paying such honor to the band.
I always interpreted Landslide as an aging parent dealing with an empty nest after their child had moved out. The parent built their life around the child and now must change or deal with a landslide of regret and loss.
Yelp. I'm an empty nester. I remember everything about when each child moved out.
Only Stevie can make this song real in the spirit.
I subscribed because of how directly and simply you explain your subjects. I really appreciate that there isn't a ton of sensationalism or dramatization in your videos. Great video about a timeless song!
Maan landslide is one of those songs that you feel deep in your bones and makes your hair stick up and just get flashbacks of your life growing and just.going through it the good the bad the pain all if it...thank you stevie nicks for giving us the feeling that it's OK to go through and prevail
there is a beautiful and raw honesty to Stevie Nicks songwriting and whether it's her work with Fleetwood Mac or her solo stuff it's touching and timeless music
I agree. Such a master of her craft.
Agreed!
My whole family knows that Landslide is to be played at my funeral. That's how much I love it.
In the summer of 77 I was 12 years old playing little league baseball. One of my teammates older brother drove us to the games. He had a copy of Rumors. He played it over and over. It changed my life. I remember the deep cuts much more than the hits. One song in particular was Second hand news. What a great band.
Yay!!! another 1965 baby!!! :)
Landslide was the class song for my daughter’s graduation from Kimberton Waldorf school in 2003. It is a song that touches the heart of every generation.
Excellent content, Professor! I've been lucky enough to see Fleetwood Mac twice in Boston, and Stevie Nicks (solo) at The Tweeter Center (formerly "Great Woods") in Mansfield, MA. My 20-year-old son (whose favorite artist is Dion) recently took a community college course on the history of rock music, and I've been telling him about things I've learned watching your channel. I think he was dismissing you simply as "some TH-camr" until I mentioned an interview you did with Burton Cummings. I think that was all I got out before he interrupted me and said, "Wait...What? He does INTERVIEWS with the artists?!?". Now he watches, too. (lol)
It will always be Great Woods. They are on, what, their forth corporate name - who can keep track?
@@billcook4768 That's what I still call it!
This is in my bucket list. Heard recently she had a concert in Las Vegas. I hope to catch the next one. Such a a favorite of mine ❤
Landslide was one of the first songs by Fleetwood Mac my mom introduced me to. I really liked the song a lot. But now every time I hear it. It brings tears to my eyes because I think of her. And now that I'm older it is more powerful than when I was a kid first hearing it. I still remember watching Stevie Nicks guest star in American Horror Story Coven. I had really liked that season because she had guest-starred in it.
Such a well researched and thoughtful back story on this song. Well done. Fleetwood Mac seem to have an interesting kind of 'heart-warming' feel to their music.
As crazy as this world can get from time to time it's been the great music and musicians that have kept it from blowing up. Quite literally.
I reheard and relearned Landslide right after my Dad died. In that recording Stevie dedicated it to her Dad. Songs don’t change. Just their meaning.
Hey Professor! Great video on "Landslide." I really can relate to this song, for I'm going through something similar with my career currently. And just like Stevie Nicks, I decided not to give up (although I'd be totally justified if I retired).
After hearing this story, I can also see where Lindsey Buckingham got the inspiration to write "Monday Morning." He probably was thinking about his upcoming tour with Don Everly. It is amazing that "Landslide" didn't come out as a single back in the 70's. I don't think "Monday Morning" did either, but both are classics in my book.
I find it interesting that the Dixie Chicks hit the top ten (#7) with their version of "Landslide." That song would have stayed around longer, had the Dixie Chicks not spoken out against Bush declaring war on Iraq in early 2003. I don't think such things should matter regarding the music.
Thank you, Zenni! Professor of Rock is one of the most worthwhile things to watch on all of TH-cam!
‘Oh well’ is one helluva song, but have always also loved ‘Hypnotized’ so different than their later music, but so different than their later big hits/popularity, they are both something unique that always makes me feel that I found something new.
Shawn, that is not Stevie and Lindsey. Bob Welch sang and played Hypnotized. I think Oh Well was Peter Green, but Lindsey did a great cover though.
Same band, different line-up; but you are correct in who wrote the songs.
@@shawnbooth3696 I don't think I've heard FM play Hypnotized live now that I think about it. I mean after Bob left.
Sad that he has left us permanently; his song ‘Sentimental lady’ is captivating. Another song that I’ve rediscovered since hearing it in my youth.
Did you ever have a song that makes you cry every time you hear it? Not necessarily because you can relate to it, but because of the emotion the artist put into it? You feel empathy for what the artist must have been through. This song just wrecks me every time.
The most memorable part of 'The Dance' for me, was Stevie singing and staring at Lindsey towards the end of "Silver Springs" !
It's a classic moment for sure. We will cover it!
That performance of Silver Springs is Beautifully Amazing, you can still feel & see the emotions of that incredible classic ❤️ " was I just a fool"... almost haunting....
If I’m not mistaken, Silver Spring was written on that plane ride back to LA from Aspen
@@Tess7 I believe it was written while they were traveling thru Maryland, hence Silver Springs, but I'm not 100%
@@lonecapricorn9518 that was my understanding too.
Unlike so many other media, songs link to feelings and times of our lives... Which is what songs like Landslide is to me... Where the words and melody... Pulls out and bares our core being... The hardest times... And touches back... Everytime it's heard it again...
You are such a great storyteller, I watch your video's about stars I'm not really interested in! LOL! I also really appreciate you telling us how they charted in different countries. Awesome and so thoroughly researched. Love your channel!
I am so glad your channel popped up in my feed. Because life happens and stories like this are forgotten over the years. This song is one that fits in so many places. Driving in a car (especially if it’s on the coastline), turn it up and sing it loud. Hanging out with friends. School dances. Shoot, it even works well while doing dishes….. it really helps while scrubbing the scum off dishes. Lol. It’s a song that works great when you needs a song to sing after a break up, but also to sooth a fussy baby back to sleep. This song is truly a song for all ages and years. It is timeless and full of memories for so many people.
I can say that there are so few music artists that I’d wish would continue creating for eternity. Yes a calm and comforting song like LANDSLIDE is one type, but they have many up beat and energized songs as well. They are a band that has such a range of what they can produce, they were never a one rhythm band. They were always known for songs they created with a feeling of emotions, just like people (are emotion’s change). Most bands have a certain type of music they create and are not known for anything else. Shoot look at METALLICA….. when they found a song that had a wonderful guitar solo and a calmer beat…… well it was a song many that hated that their type of rock and roll to finally listen to that band. A lot of singers and bands are definitely typed…. Maybe it’s themselves or their bosses that won’t risk anything else, but that’s why they don’t last. But for a lifetime that one METALLICA song will reach more then one group of people. But Fleetwood Mac…… imagine what kinds of songs they could be creating and singing now?!?! Damn, the last 15 years alone have had enough going on to create thousands of new songs and material. Now for instance a lot of people don’t like Taylor Swift (really), but she has a huge range in the different types of songs and music she has. And there are people out there that find themselves liking at least one of her songs. She can create music and it usually is good.
There are just a few singers and bands that I would love to live forever and continue to contribute to the airways. Bands that reach people that would never usually listen to their type of music. But sadly they can’t, but we at least can continue to listen to them.
I am so thankful to have music before, during and after FLEETWOOD MAC that reach so many. I really feel from the 70s to mud 90s there wee more then that of other years. I guess creativity was bursting those years. Lol
Sorry I rambled so much. I was trying to convey what was in my head. That’s why I seemed to over explain it. Still not sure if I did. Lol.
A great singer and songwriter - love her or hate her, you can never fail to recognise a Stevie Nicks song; Dreams, Rhiannon, Edge of Seventeen, Landslide, Gold Dust Woman, Sara and "how could you leave this off of Rumours" Silver Springs.
One of my favourite female singer-songwriters.
Don't forget SARA!
@@ProfessorofRock its there on my list - definitely right up there as my favourite Mac song.
The relationship paradox we all face sooner or later created some of the best songs of my teen years in the early70's, being through going through divorce and failed relationships, I eventually gave up on, " happily ever after", but still listen to their great music. Wonderful channel. Thanks🙏
This song really inspired me when I was in my late 20's. I related to it for some of the same reasons Stevie apparently wrote it. I was trying to decide whether to stay in my marriage and I was also contemplating a career change. Like Stevie, I persevered in my marriage and field of work. I've now been married for 43 years and happier than ever.
I discovered this song in 1984 after my sons birth it became a song I sung to my infant often for us both a young 24 year old and my infant son. Now I still sing it to my son no longer an infant!
Although I agree that their first album was a bit lackluster, it was their first album and it wasn’t all bad. Frozen Love is a great song and fortunately Mick recognized that.
Landslide is one of those headphones songs I listen to when I want to be introspective. It’s a beautiful song and Smashing Pumpkins did a nice cover of it.
Many of my friends know this song because of Smashing Pumpkins!
I think the 1970's was the golden age of music. Every time I hear Stevie Nicks, it brings back to a time of freedom and youthfulness !!!
My favorite female vocalist ever. She and Lindsey were a super-duo
I almost always tear up when I hear this song. The emotion in it always reaches through and it touches me in a way no other song ever has. It’s a masterpiece.
The song truly is a masterpiece, and I can't think of a more haunting voice than Stevie's. Another amazing video, Adam. Thank you.
Dude. You post some truly great, insigthful deep-dives on the music we all love. Thank you.
Thank you for this beautiful storytelling! I am attending Lindsey's concert in Stockholm in the end of the month, and I am hoping and praying to see Stevie one day.
First time I heard Rhiannon, I cried, I loved it so much. Only one person can sing Landslide like it should be sung, and that's Stevie Nick's. It reminds me of my toxic relationship that began at such a young age. I got older and realized my life was not the life I had wanted. It touched me deep.
I've just started getting into Stevie Nicks. Very cool that you're doing one on her
I grew up with this music, with this song. A part of my coming of age. It is woven into my born marrow and any - every time I hear it, it reaches into my chest and squeezed my heart.
I can't imagine the world without this song. Landslide is breathtaking. Oh, thank you Stevie for this song.
I think your description of Stevie's gift & talent here being "'Beautifully Honest" is as perfect as 'Landslide' sounds. Thank you~Professor, Stevie & Band... and to God for MUSIC~ it's like dessert for the soul. Amen.
One song that is covered by multiple stars, after the white ablum. This young lady had little help by the record executives.how could that record executive thing that such beautiful writing had not retail value? One meeting, One album, one song (Rhiannon) but really an entire album of singles that could make an FM station famous. The instant acceptance of this beautiful Classic with Landslide, made a profound statement. The beginning of the end of her relationship? The start of a new chapter in her life. I think all are involved. What a beautiful song. What a beautiful lady
It's such a great album. Though not a debut album, it was the debut album of the coming together of Buckingham/Nicks and the Mac to create what was the most celebrated version of the band.
