She had an impressive professional career in Italy, Brazil, South Korea, and China, and represented the Canadian Indoor National Team.

31:10 Asahi's actually not memorizing tactics - he's "swallowing a person": it's a superstition in Japan to get rid of anxiety where you have to draw the kanji for a person (人) on your palm 3 times and then pretend to swallow it. As expected, Asahi can be seen doing this on a few occasions in the series x)
As for Benkei, you know that [Ushi]jima [Waka]toshi's nickname is Ushiwaka, and Ushiwakamaru is a childhood name of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, one of the famous samurai in Japan. Benkei was a warrior monk once defeated by Ushiwakamaru, and so he's loyally served him ever since. Hinata sometimes refers to Ushijima as "Ushiwaka", and seeing Reon as his teammate must've brought up that association.

@@Audrey4u I don't remember if we ever got an official version, and as long as we don't, both choices are good.
Short Explanation: Ushiwaka is the name of a famous samurai and Benkei is his righthand man. It was basically a history joke of Hinata going like "Oh this must be Ushiwaka's righthand man." and then being shocked that his name wasn't actually Benkei.
Not an easy joke to translate. It's an allusion heavily dependent on the culture from where this art was produced.
It'd be like if the main opposing player was named Batman and Hinata went "Oh this guy is definitely Robin!"
To add, when we do a quick image search of Benkei (aka Musashibō Benkei or roughly translated as "Benkei, Monk of Musashi"), some looked like Leon--brown skin with round eyes.

Here's a good analogy for english audiences. Imagine if Ushijima's name was Arthur and volleyball magazines called him "King Arthur".
If there was another handsome, tall and strongly built player on Shiratorizawa. Hinata might run into him thinking "....its Lancelot"

In Adam's defense, I remember also not realizing Ushijima was a leftie until the end of this episode haha. Just never clicked when they show clips of him.

Yes, that's true. I’m left-handed myself, and for example, when I see someone writing with their left hand, I notice it immediately
that scene when sarah was pissed was the second appearance of ushi hitting, it had just one clip before it. and i also only realized when nishi say it.
I remember Sarah catching that as soon as Ushijima was shown spiking a ball. I was like "damn she caught that so early."

I can’t believe we’re finally here! Season 3 is my favorite, and the mere fact that we’re here gives me chills. I freaking love Tendou, but then I also love Bokuto so it doesn’t really surprise me that Sarah’s tastes and mine aren’t lining up here.

Sorry for the machine translation, I'm commenting from Japan. Benkei is a famous historical figure in Japan, and is a loyal and martial subordinate of Ushiwakamaru (the source of Ushijima's nickname).Hinata's first impression was that Leon's physique and facial features reminded him of Benkei. Hinata was surprised that Benkei was called "Leon". This is because Hinata, who doesn't know Leon's name yet, just assumed that his name was an old Japanese name

Just to make it super clear to Adam (^_^) the player is Ushijima Wakatoshi ant it's often refferd to as Ushiwaka (USHIjima WAKAtoshi)
Them coming out on the court with the announcements has to be one of the top hype moments in the whole series for me.

Something that gets lost in translation for bangs guy is that he's speaking in incredibly polite keigo (form of Japanese that's meant to show politeness). He is super respectful of the upperclassmen when he speaks. He maintains this even when he tells Ushijima that he's going to prove his worth as the ace.

Hehehe kicking my feet and giggling in excitement for this match! It's my favorite that's been animated and we're all in for a treat!
I really like how this episode takes its time introducing the whole match, not just the characters in the starting lineup (which I absolutely love the inclusion of), but with the cheer squads, the emphasis on the cameras watching, and just them being on center court-it really sets up how grand this match is going to be and how epic it has already been built up to be in the players (and audience's!) minds!
It really build up the anticipation and excitement and nerves!
Adding to what sarah said, honestly i feel the first time you watch haikyuu, you are very much fixated on different things and you kinda miss other character's stories and when you rewatch it , it hits you so much harder lol. Love the reactions!!

Tales From The Crypt was also aired in the US, initially on HBO when it was a premium cable channel, and the edited censored version eventually went into syndication on regular basic cable TV.

Who is Benkei? Short version is the most loyal retainer of Ushiwakamaru the man who Ushijima's nickname comes from. Ushiwakamaru being a historical and mythical figure from Japan in the mid 12th century.
When Ushijima was betrayed by his beloved brother, a man who he looked up to he chose to commit seppuku as his brother's army overran his compound. He asked Benkei, a mountain of a man who carried 7 different weapons into battle to stand guard at the door so no one would see him in the act. Benkei stood outside his door all night fighting and holding off the dozens of men who cam to take his lords life. In the morning they found Benkei standing there dead on his feet. He had dozens of arrows as well as several spears and swords stuck in his body but he still refused to move or fall, so great was his loyalty and love for his master.
If you have played any of the final fantasy games that had Gilgamesh in them he is modeled after what Benkei was said to look like, including the weapons, despite them being completely different people, personalities, and folklores.
I just want to say that I love your in-depth reviews so much. Haikyu's like the first and only anime I've ever loved despite not being into sports. It actually made me try varsity volleyball (which for me was a bad idea as someone not used to exercise) and the drills there were so difficult, I could not feel my legs the next day. So because of trying the sport, I respect players more (not that I didn't in the first place) because their dedication is unmatched. I also understood how good it felt when your plays earn you points. To all sports players, you are doing awesome sweeties.

Okay, no one else commented this at least as far as I could see. The "tall tall wall" lines are the first ones spoken in season 1, 2, and 3. They are also the last lines of season 1. Spoiler for Adam...
They are not spoken at the beginning of season 4 however. My personal interpretation of this is season 4 is when Hinata had a perspective shift and is no longer only concerned with the tall wall in front of him and the view from the summit but the view from the entire court.

Ahhh FINALLY Hikari Are. The BEST haikyuu opening. It's not fly. It's this one.
I am glad I have watched you watch this again with your husband. This double analysis is entertaining in a very different way than the first time we watched you watched these episodes.
What I love about this episode is the writing!
They have snuked in expositon in this first episode blending it in with in universe explanation. They introduce our players then, of course we know them already and we expect even their reactions. BUT THEN they introduce Shiratorizawa's players, and THEIR reactions. So inmediately we get a glimpse of their personalities as their reactions match the players from Karasuno. The same goes for the warm up phase, Shiratorizawa is warming up first so that we get Karasuno's reactions, which we know them and their dynamic. And then we switch to compare!
This is key because up until this point, the plot of Shiratorizawa and even moving forward is that Ujishima is a lone player, the single super star, so unlike other matches where we were introduced to the teams before hand, this time, this is the first time we see the whole Shiratorizawa team, so we NEED the introductions to the other team players!
Also to be fair, Ujishima being a left hand player is only a plot in episode 2 of this season, so it is ok not to have noticed unless you are paying attention.

Benkei blocked the bridge, snatched the katanas of passer's-by, and collected 999 katanas.
The 1000th target was Usiwakamaru, and Benkei was defeated and become a subordinate of Usiwakamaru. This is a well-known lore.
The name Benkei is archaic and is the name of monk.
If Leon's name had been based on archaic two kanjis (like Ittetu. Ittetu sounds little archaic.), Hinata would have responded "It make sense 100%"
As an aside, if there is a character who steals and collects enemy's weapons, it is probably a Benkei motif, and their appearance is similar.
I wish Adam and Sarah could react to the music. This ending song is my all time favorite. At least they could comment their impressions

Random trivia: I'm a Kento Miyaura fan and apparently his favourite Haikyuu character is Ushiwaka.
It is *partially* true that the "incomplete" concept is because Ushiwaka is just *that good*, and that the Academy will struggle to field an equal replacement when he's gone
But I think the idea extends further than that, especially when taken with the comparison that "Seijoh is the most *complete* team in the prefecture".
Seijoh, as a team, isn't good because their individual players are fantastic. In fact, their current team has two, *maybe* three, very high tier players. But Seijoh is good because they *train* for team cohesion, for a tightly knit defence, for getting the absolute maximum out of every player's individual specific talents, even if those talents are meagre (such as Kunimi).
Contrast that with Shiratorizawa. They are a high budget, high prestige program, so they have a large talent pool to draw on. And their approach to that talent is an extreme "All Star" mentality. Fuck team cohesion, fuck meshing well, we are going to recruit Big Guys Who Hit Fast, and we're going to turn them all into weapons: because who the hell is going to be able to face that and survive?
It doesn't really train the team to make the *best* use of each other's skills, but it sure does produce individually strong players. Players that, to some extent, are much more *replaceable* without leaving a hole than, say, Oikawa is to Seijoh.
I literally shouted at my TV "It's the freaking crypt keeper" the first time I saw this season. I got to see that show in the US also and I'm similar in age to you so I feel so validated now.
Finally season 3 is here! I’m so excited for this season for you two

I do remember once I got too early to Football practice and the field was empty and wet from the sprinklers. I just stood there taking that place made for action being so quiet and peaceful. It was nice. A different kind of freedom
If you look closely there's a tiny dot on Adam's right sleeve, it doesn't move when he does so maybe it's the camera's lense. You have been now cursed to notice it.

"Benkei"A well-known military commander in ancient Japan, he got acquainted with another legendary military commander named Minamoto no Yoshitsune after a duel. After that, the two went on the battlefield together and were undefeated. "Ushiwaka" was Minamoto no Yoshitsune's childhood nickname, and Ushiwaka and Benkei They exist in pairs, so in the film, Hinata mistakenly thinks that the other party's name is definitely Benkei.
I don't think it was explained yet that Ushiwaka is a lefty at this point of the anime, I believe they left that spike for more observant viewers to notice, and Adam got it right there and then.
Shiratorizawa isn't going to be weak after Ushiwaka leaves, because the whole idea of the team is to gather strong players and polish their individual skills, and that doesn't just mean one player. They were a powerhouse with that "incomplete" style before he went there, and will be after he leaves.
I cannot wait for Adam to watch THAT episode in S3!🤩

I think that a good idea would be to look and read at some comments from your first reaction each episode, you could find explanations ou forgot and fun facts
Like for example, Coach Ukai isn't employed by the school so he doesn't get money and on paper isn't the head coach, this is why Takeda is the one that asks for subs and time outs, and the one introduced as coach in the line up

I played hockey and in my last year of minor hockey we were 1 win away from going provincials but are coaching staff was the type that pleased certain parents.
Most of those parents kids were not as good as the rest of us so instead of playing lines that would help us to tie it they did the opposite and we got scored on because of it.
The point of the story is I never got to experience that nervousness in front of a crowd.
Bit of context, but lefties are "corrected" in japanese, forced to become right handed at young age, especially outside of Tokyo. Hence why being a lefty is so rare in japan.
