Thank you for adding the bit about being respectful of hunters, if more people actually contemplated how their actions would affect others, unintentional or not, this world would assuredly be a better place. Good looking out sir.
I added metal dogs to my 170 and also changed the chain tensioner to a side adjuster. Makes it a lot better in my opinion as far as holding chain tension for longer.
can you provide a before and after of the effects of bucking spikes on a homeowner saw made for smaller items.. it probably makes the small saw look cute but its not double bucking spikes used for larger saws
I am in the market for a saw and I know I want a Stihl. Didn't know if this was enough saw for my purposes but now I know it is exactly what I need. Thanks for posting this video.
I have been a long time owner of a MS170 and I love mine. I recently ungraded the carb to an adjustable one and put real felling dogs on it. I also upgraded to a bigger 16” bar and chain. But I wanted to say the “half chock” position on the lever isn’t chocking at all it’s full chock at the very bottom, next position up is full throttle essentially what your doing with your hand on the throttle. And obviously the next position up is run or if you hit the throttle with your finger it springs it up to run automatically. Never start a chainsaw with your hand on the throttle in the air on the ground is much safer. I have seen way to many people with cut up legs and faces doing what you just did. Also the only time you should ever start a chainsaw with your hand on the throttle is if it’s flooded. They make chainsaws to be started a certain way for a reason. And Stihl’s are one of the easiest because of the full throttle setting on the stop/run/chock lever.

Nice man, I switched my 171 to a 14 inch bar so I could put a bigger chain on it. I was told the 171 might be a little underpowered for a bigger chain but as long as you use it for its intended purpose (limbs and small trees) it does just fine. I think it boggs down less often with the bigger chain.
Good review going to get me one for next weekend and also people are hunting on my private property so I hope they like the sound of this around 7am all day long cutting a trail through the woods lmao
Hey Jake, I have same saw. You can get Stihl MS 180 dogs(which are steel) and mount it on your 170. Be sure and buy the 2 screws to mount it to your saw. Just check the front body of saw to insure the tabs for mounting the steel dog are there.

The “other” model of chainsaw which you couldn’t drop start is designed so the rope is much easier to pull because it has more springs inside. The reason you can’t drop start it is because you will break the springs inside however for people who just want to start there chainsaw on the floor and want the rope to be easy to pull it makes it much easier. Lots of chainsaws now have this feature from lots of manufacturers.
Bit late but the easy start on the 181 is magic. It's so easy a child could do it. You don't even need to have it on the ground to do it, after trying it out I can almost guarantee my dad will get a saw with one if it's available.
small saw for small jobs, but it does a great job but I would like to get the next size up saw for more power....I need to break down and clean mine up, been doing tree maintenance and storm clean up with it...it is several years old now and keeps firing up, I use stihl 50:1 oil and ethanol shield gas treatment with 87 octane ....eventually the ethanol will destroy the carb and fuel lines , my stihl weedeater had to be rebuilt due to ethanol , but after several years of use
Only things you can't drop start are the "Easy-2-Start" recoils. It damages and breaks the second spring. Only reason Stihl and other manufacturers tell you not to drop start is just for safety (besides the "Easy-2-Start" recoils).

Thank you for not cutting that oak tree down. I'm not necessarily a tree hugger but no reason to cut a perfectly healthy tree down that takes over 100 years to grow that big!!! I love cutting wood too but I find the already dead/dying trees. Great video 👍
Did you see the one that you have to half pull before pull pulling they got now? Trying to make chainsaw guys even more soft then they've already gotten in the last decade... Which I thought was impossible!
I wish I had this much luck out of this saw. I have had the ms 170 for 1 month and it is having the 4th carb put on it now because it won’t run for more than 15 minutes. Stihl dealer tells me the carb keeps failing.

Hello, I want to buy a chainsaw that is not too expensive to cut ailantos (not very hard wood trees) and occasionally make firewood (well, I buy firewood and sometimes the logs are too long to be introduced into the stove and I want the chainsaw to trim bends logs) Do you recommend the Stihl MS 170 chainsaw? Thank you.
170 is definitely enough. I have one myself, including a 261, 462, 500I and this Friday a 880, but nothing beats the love and simplicity of my first saw, the 170.
That's a chainsaw combi spanner/combi tool. They come with the saw designed to fit the bar nuts, spark plug and chain tensioner 👍🏻 Fill the chain oil to the top every time you fill the fuel, you'll usually find that there's just a little oil left by the time the fuel runs out, which stops you accidentally running with no oil.
It is a 2 stroke combustible gasoline engine. It uses a 50/1 gasoline/2 stroke oil mix ratio to run. What 50/1 means is it uses 1 part oil to 50 parts gasoline which means I put 2.5 ounces of oil to a gallon of gasoline to be safe which is a little heavy on the oil but i would rather a little extra smoke as opposed to seized up chainsaw

I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. I'm about to buy a 170 to use around the house. I don't know if I'm gonna make any mods. I crank a chainsaw the same way you do.
That tiny thing... if people are all scared and lack the confidence to fire that 1 up like that....
Finally someone starting a chainsaw like a man!

Amazing how many of these people forget to put in gas when they are doing these ms170 videos
I have found with trail clearing u have to tighten up that chain too or u will throw the chain.
