Fun fact! This movie is based on Jane Austen's "Emma". I think it's the only successful modern adaptation of an Austen classic that keeps the spirit of a "comedy of manners".
Hijacking this to also direct people to The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and to Fire Island as both are very good modern versions of P&P. One is a vlog version. one is a gay version. Both versions deserve their flowers alongside Bridget Jones, IMO.
@@rjenyawd Ahem. No. He was her brother in law. You're maybe thinking of Mansfield Park where the hero and heroine were cousins (gross now, but very normal then). There was no uncle incest in Jane Austen's works
They're not step siblings though. As it was clarified in the beginning Josh's mom and Cher's dad were only briefly married. They've been divorced for several years. They don't have blood or legal ties. Josh is only there because he wants to be a lawyer like Cher's dad, so he's taking Josh under his wing.
Cher's father said you divorce spouses, not children. That's why Josh is around. He views him as his son. He sees them as brother and sister until he realized that Josh had feelings for Cher when he saw how concerned and slightly jealous he was when Christian came to take her to that dance party
Josh is an older brief former stepbrother because the character in Emma is a MUCH older family friend that has known her since she was a child (when he was an adult) which is super creepy. The older kinda ex stepbrother was the 90s softening of that.
Alicia was really popular in the 90s, she stopped acting for a couple years bc she wasn’t happy doing it and went into activism. She co-founded My Kind, a vegan vitamin line. “Blast from the past” is another great silverstone movie with Brendan Fraser.
"The Proposal" and "13 Going on 30" are both great. I also strongly recommend checking out "The Object of My Affection" with Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston from 1998. It was during "Friends," but before Paul Rudd came on the show.
Oh man this brought me back. This was THE movie back in the day. Such a classic. It's one of my comfort movies to this day. Also, this is a loose adaptation of Jane Austen's book Emma. The plot is about a girl who meddles in everyone's love lives lol.
Lol yeah I get that the incest makes ppl uncomfy but honestly it really doesn’t bother me bc it’s not the point? The writers thought about how they would transfer Emma Woodhouse and George Knightly’s relationship from Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’ into this version, and this just happened to be what they chose I guess. Loved seeing your journey through this film blind! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen someone watch this who didn’t already kind of know what was going to happen. Had a blast watching this!
I still remember seeing this for the first time at my great-grandmother's house because it was one of the only interesting things on TV. I believe that was 1999 or 2000. It's been one of my all-time favorite movies ever since. I already liked Brittany Murphy from smaller roles so this movie made her one of my favorite actresses. RIP 💖
This movie was immediately popular. Maybe it feels like later films because it was so influential. Lots of others tried to mimic this vibe and capture the same audience.
I literally just watched this movie last night! Brings me back to my teen years. The move is loosely based on the novel Emma by the way. RIP Brittney Murphy!
Lmao it’s not incest. His mum was married to her dad at one point, but in their world where his mum has been married like multiple times and so has her dad, marriage isn’t even like a thing that brings the families together that way. They didn’t grow up together or anything
Alicia Silverstone got her breakthrough when Aerosmith cast her for their videos "Cryin'," "Amazing" & "Crazy." This was the film debut for Paul Rudd. The movie was a HUGE success and Alicia earned millions and a three-movie deal that if you watch a deep dive into it, she admits she didn't make the best choices after. There are some that foolishly believe she helped ruin the "Batman" franchise because she played "Batgirl" in the AWFUL George Clooney version of "Batman & Robin." One of the other cutest movies she starred in was "Blast From The Past" (I think you'll love it) as Eve. It also stars Academy Award winners Brendan Fraser, Sissy Spacek & Christopher Walken.
I’ve been watching your reactions for a really long time, and always enjoy them a lot, but for some reason, this may be my favorite reaction of yours ever.
I kind of understand why Cher and Josh fell for each other. Well, more her side than his. His side is very creepy given who he is to her although, TECHNICALLY, Josh isn't her stepbrother anymore. His mother and her father divorced. He just still comes around because as her father said... You divorce spouses. Not children. But underneath it all, Josh is kind of a cradle robber. Cher is only 16 and he watched her grow up for some period of their life together. It's weird.
This was an instant success. I did great box office and Siskel and Ebert gave it two thumbs up and called it one of the best films of the year in its genre. This film was social commentary of the kids at that time. Love it!! Alicia Silverstone is the second most beautiful women in the world behind Farrah Fawcett. 😊 She became known for doing Aerosmith videos with Liv Tyler, Steve Tyler’s daughter, that had very lesbionic tendencies. She is sultry and sexy, she even did nude photo shoots so I’ve seen e everything! She had a hit in a movie before this where she seduces a married man and kinda went Fatal Attraction. Oh, and I’m a gay man in case you were wondering. I didn’t want you to get the wrong impression just because I believe how ultra sexy she is. She was the first Batgirl in any of the Batman movies. She gained weight and people started giving her grief about it. She took time off to have children.
Ah ha ! But they're not. Earlier in the film Cher mentions that her dad and Josh's mom were barely even married and it was five years ago. So that would disqualify them as being step sibilings.
Because someone in my family married someone in someone else's family doesn't make any difference to our relationship, really. If they were raised as siblings, they would feel differently about it anyway. Someone posted a video saying if Lorelai and Luke on _Gilmore Girls_ got married, it would mean Rory and Jess couldn't be together because they would now be related, and I just find these attitudes entirely bizarre. (Not that I care about Rory and Jess, but this logic is not logic.)
I assume your Patreon told you that you'll have to have a seance to talk to Jane Austen about the plot or lack there of. lol. The story is a couple hundred years old. Elton is even named for his character in the book (Mr. Elton).
51:31 If you want another good film with Alicia Silverstone in it you should watch 'Blast from the Past'. Also 'Clueless' was based on the novel 'Emma' whose plot dealt heavily with Victorian Era class themes in England. Even though the script closely follows the original ploy threads, somehow alot of the class themes are so lightly alluded to and subsumed by the 90's teen aesthetic that most viewers barely notice them. Even the matchmaker aspect is an important part of Emma's character as in that story it's her governess who she sets up rather than her teachers and it happens just before the story begins in Emma and she immediately begins trying to set up her new "lower class" friend up with someone from her circle and discouraging her from marrying a respectable farmer who (the Ty character) is in love with. The person who she tries to pair her with is Mr. Elton and he has a much bigger role in the story than Elton does in Clueless. I recommend the Gweneth Paltrow version of 'Emma' that closely followed the release of this film and marketed itself on the popularity of this film to compare the storylines. You'll notice that they hit all the same story beats but 'Emma' accentuates the class themes while this movie points to them and moves on. You'll also kinda get why it was chosen to have Josh be an ex-stepbrother since there's no real modern correlation to the type of relationship Emma and Mr. Knightley share. Christians' use of Emma as a sort of 'beard' was a 90s correlation of Frank Churchill using their relationship to hide his betrothal to a poor girl with no familial inheritance which was similarly taboo in that era as being gay was in the 90s.
The movies you have coming up are good ones. You should also try "Never been Missed" if you haven't watched that before. It's a good movie. I think came out in 1999. Xx 🙂
I agree with you, this movie always seemed a little ahead of its time to me. Not like 1995, which I remember still feeling like the early-‘90s, the movie looks more like 1999-2000.
Alicia Silverstone was my first crush ever, between Clueless, the three Aerosmith videos (Cryin', Crazy, Amazing), Blast From the Past and Excess Baggage (a movie not many know but I adore). She's super charming and gorgeous.
I wish you would make a movie yourself. Your humour would make great dialogue!!😂😂 Watch you for your personality. So funny! BTW watching Cher gives me buffy pre sunnydale vibes Tartan a major pattern going on. Sales must have been sky high lol And incest is two blood related relatives getting jiggy with it. Some people are twats
@TheTrophyMuncher no probs mr. Maybe watch strictly?🤣🤣🤣 You'd have waaayy fun with commentary on the outfits and duff dancers or maybe do the compliation of the worst lol

I wouldn't say the only successful adaptation. What about Bridget Jones' Diary? I think that was a pretty successful adaptation.
And honestly the Josh character being her ex-stepbrother is much less racy than the character in the original novel being her uncle.
@@rjenyawdmr knightley isnt emma's uncle, he's her brother in law. which is ultimately better than being a ex-step brother. 💀

Brittany Murphy said once in a interview that when she filmed the movie she was indeed a virgin who couldn’t drive 😂😂😂

In _Emma._ Mr. Knightley's younger brother is married to Emma's older sister.

Love how you appreciate Cher’s character. She may be clueless but she’s very likable.
If you didn't immediately recognize Mr Hall from the Princess Bride, it should be on your upcoming reaction list! ❤
Never seen it, it’s on the list for sure!

There was a Clueless TV show which stared some of the same cast but Cher and Josh were recast as they were big actors.

Hopefully you noticed all the lingo used in the 90s that kids nowadays are using and think they came up with. 😂😂😂 As if!
Yeah so dope!
And crib too😂😂
There is no incest. They are not related at all.

Can't believe you don't know Donald from Scrubs!
Mean girls was nearly a decade later 😅 wouldn't class them as the same era 😊
Yeah, was a bit off with that one 😅
one of my favorite Alicia Silverstone movies is Blast from the Past !
She was brilliant in this!
I love how Wallace Shawn just kind of hit a certain age and stayed that way 🤣Even in Young Sheldon

I loved your perspective. This is one of my favorite comedies. It's just fun....although it's suppose to be a version of Austin's EMMA. 😊
