    An excellent video Jem.

    I have watched this video so many times over the years and still feel so inspired by it. We don’t paint the same but there are so many techniques of yours that I have incorporated into my work. I have a marsh near my house in Los Angeles that during the summer dries out quite a bit and the colors become golden and lovely. Thank you for sharing your wonderful work and know that you have a loyal follower!

      Thank you for your comment. 🙏 It is nice to connect well with people and for you to let me know. The only thing I would say is, they are not 'my' techniques, of course. They are just out there, used by many people, and as much yours as anyone's.

    Hi Jem. I have been ricocheting between artists and their styles, trying to find my own self in all of this and came across your hard-soft edge, looseness and light and a limited palette and I feel you have pointed me in the right direction, so thank you for posting your work and inspiring lost souls such as mine.

      Hi Carl. Thanks very much; I appreciate your comment.
      Not that you're asking for advice, but just in case it might be helpful, I always think the best thing re. that situation is to focus on just painting from your own observation. From life, ideally (eg plein air, if a landscape artist) but otherwise from your own photos/sketches/notes, etc.
      Look at the things that the artists you admire HAVE IN COMMON. Observe/write down what those things are, then do it your way. i.e. not in the 'handwriting' of those or any other artists, but just as it comes out of YOU.
      Always consider/observe the objective qualities of the visual world (tone, edges, texture, colour, shape, etc, etc) but don't look at how other artists actually put it all together.
      Do all this for 20 years, and you'll be well on your way! Cheers, Jem 🙂

    I checked a lot of your paintings on Google and feel surprised that I didn't notice them before now. I have studied so many paintings (like John Singer Sargent for example) on the internet for years and find yours among the more beautiful. And you are also a very good teacher. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! /Erik

    Lovely painting Jem. I come across this type of scene all the time but wouldn't dare attempt to paint it - the foreground would daunt me!! I've been painting quite a long time but am still struggling to find my own style. I really like your blend of loose wash and suggested detail. Quite reminiscent of painters like Wesson, James Fletcher Watson, Steve Hall etc. Who are your influences that I should check out? Thanks

    • @JemBowdenWatercolour
      @JemBowdenWatercolour  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Ian. Well, Wesson and Steve Hall have both influenced my painting. I also was influenced by William Heaton-Cooper, and Seago. All wonderful painters who get the best from the medium, to my eyes. Probably not many surprises there.

    What a truly outstanding demo video! I absolutely love your commentary, your points are so helpful and beneficial as to what you're thinking and why you're doing it. I just came across your Channel a few days ago. In the first video I watched there was no commentary or sound but I found it very informative to look at your style of painting. I was so mesmerised by that fabulous sky that you painted. I love your loose style it is amazing. Not too much detail but enough to get your point across. I am going to subscribe to your channel and give you a thumbs-up on this wonderful painting. Please do another video I absolutely love your work. I have not seen all of your videos but I want to ask a question, do you ever do cityscapes with buildings and figures?
    Marvin

    • @JemBowdenWatercolour
      @JemBowdenWatercolour  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much, Marvin! What a nice message to receive.
      I quite often do scenes with buildings, when out en plein air. Lots of examples on my website Plein air Gallery page.
      But as you can probably tell, its 'natural' landscape I'm really inspired by more than anything. I'm rarely inspired to paint cities, or people to be honest, though figures do get included in village scenes sometimes. I love very old buildings, with character (to me), not but not the regularity/monotony of modern/new ones.
      I should add that as well as my free demos here on youtube I have a 'video-on-demand' for purchase too, since I make my income solely from my art. Details on my website: www.jembowdenwatercolour.co.uk Thanks again and all the best, Jem

      Jem Bowden Watercolour thank you for such a quick response to my question. I am a fine art photographer and many times I find myself taking pictures of Landscapes more than I do City scenes. But right now I'm interested in learning watercolor. And your style of impressionistic painting I find to be awesome. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing more of your videos. I love seeing the fact that you do your paintings in real-time time, none of that speed it up stuff. Like I was saying I am a fine art photographer and I would like to give you permission to choose two of my photographs for a painting. I normally do Grant permission when artist ask for permission to use one of my photos as a reference. My website is marvin-spates.pixels.com

However, I'll decline your kind offer, as I take a great many photos of my own and really would only ever want to work from those.
