Studio watercolour practise; a backlit landscape
A forty minute half-imperial demo painting in real time, after a seven minute explanation of the (fairly loose) plan, and simple drawing out of the composition.
*** COMPETITION - WIN THIS WATERCOLOUR; please see my November 2022 blog for info ***
During the painting I give a live commentary, rather than an overdubbed one.
I explain a little bit about my thinking and purpose in doing this kind of painting. Compared to plein air painting I usually find working indoors a bit purposeless and less inspired. That’s because my painting is inspired by the experience of being in the landscape, rather than a desire to ‘make pictures’, per se. I don’t do ‘sketches’ in either situation, since I tend to regard my actual paintings as sketches as well as the end point.
I hope the video is watchable and useful for aspiring watercolourists, showing one way of working in the studio. That is, finding some references that enthuse you, then introducing some creativity by putting them together and going on a journey with no worry or expectation about the result.
Cheers,
Jem (Materials used are listed below, and mentioned in the video)

I have watched this video so many times over the years and still feel so inspired by it. We don’t paint the same but there are so many techniques of yours that I have incorporated into my work. I have a marsh near my house in Los Angeles that during the summer dries out quite a bit and the colors become golden and lovely. You have more access to the countryside than here in Oz everything here is fenced of private land no access allowed it means sitting on verges which can be risky 💕👍🌺

Most of the UK is also private land, and a lot of it in very few hands. .... And I personally do paint on road verges sometimes, which isn't ideal, but plein air never is. I do make use of public rights of way across farmland, which are also falling (or rather, being taken) out of use. I do a lot of walking with my painting gear.

I am amazed at what you have made out of what looks like to me like a dead scene. Watching you paint is aways to inspiring and I'm going to get down to trying to paint the same idea. I like the way you have chosen to change things, particularly the muddy field. Fantiastic what one ccan do with three colours, but I know I can't produce a tree anything like as good. Your brush strokes leave me confounded!

Hi Carl. Thanks very much; I appreciate your comment. Not that you're asking for advice, but just in case it might be helpful, I always think the best thing re. that situation is to focus on just painting from your own observation. From life, ideally (eg plein air, if a landscape artist) but otherwise from your own photos/sketches/notes, etc. Look at the things that the artists you admire HAVE IN COMMON. Observe/write down what those things are, then do it your way. i.e. not in the 'handwriting' of those or any other artists, but just as it comes out of YOU. Always consider/observe the objective qualities of the visual world (tone, edges, texture, colour, shape, etc, etc) but don't look at how other artists actually put it all together. Do all this for 20 years, and you'll be well on your way! Cheers, Jem 🙂

I had the palette made to my own specifications, by a guy I met who had built a 3D printing machine. So it is not available anywhere, but in design it is probably most like a cross between the largest Holbein palette and the Liz Deakin palette, whilst diverging in many ways.
