    It's so true mate. The larger the ship, the more care is needed to avoid losing an anchor. Those massive oil tankers are like a floating time bomb if not managed properly for sure! Only the world's most experienced ship Captains can handle those I'm told. It's HUGELY different with ships compared to pleasure boats of six to ten metres in length. On an outboard motor boat, most times the anchor will hold your boat even when the wind is blowing it's socks off, and with a big swell, which is what many people misunderstand about the anchoring gear for larger ocean going vessels.     QUESTION: why is the ship speed measured in knots instead of the universally used mph or kmph?

      In Nautical terms we Call in knots

      Because water bodies length is measured in nautical miles (=1.852 km).
      So, we use knots instead of mph.

    QUESTION: Captain how do you get back your anchor, I mean if it holds the ship and makes it stationary then it must be stuck-in somewhere. And also is there any risk of breaking anchor while getting it back to the ship?

    Sir, plz explain how the anchor works?
    I mean when drop the anchor it stucks on the bottom surface of the sea, but my question is how it is lifted back? when it is stucked in mud, sand or rock lets asuume, so when you try to pull the anchor, isn't there a chance that it broke?
