Think of it like this. You have a bunch of distros. A distro gives you a desktop environment or window manager (unless its command line only), layout and themes for that desktop environment, drivers (so your hardware works), a package manager allowing you to install software and finally a collection of software. A distro is basically a starting point for your own Linux experience. You can get a distro, change the desktop environment, add and remove software and so on until you're happy.
Your mum was spot on - create a document when she was going to do this task by creating an ODT document but you told her to look below that. ODT is Libreoffice file format.
If you can provide me with a link I'm more than happy too. I've had a lot of difficulty trying to set up older Linux distros. I got slackware 1.01 from 1993 but I just can't get the mouse working so I gave up.
If you can provide me with a download location I'm more than happy too. I've had a lot of difficulty trying to set up older Linux distros. I got slackware 1.01 from 1993 but I just can't get the mouse working so I gave up.
Been using Pinguy for nearly 3 years now - it is easily the best linux distro I have tried ...and so much better than using Windows even got my dad on it !
Once you connect it stores them on your computer so if you have been connected for a week then go on holidays there will be heaps of interesting pictures it will switch between.
Love watching these videos. It also helps my grandma learn some cool stuff about the OS's. COuld you try Fedora Core 1? It a very old linux based OS that I like to play around with. Its pretty cool
"...it downloads random pictures off the internet and automatically uses them as desktop backgrounds." What if it downloaded an explicit image during this?
Dear Phill, Darwin is the Opensource core of Mac OSX and the base of Pure Darwin. Darling is the open source project to get OSX software to work under Linux and BSD, witch inculdes Pure Darwin.
Webilder can be set to download photos as per your liking or just rotate photo from your own photo album. System setting and advance settings can easily be reached by clicking the user name top right. You can make docky autohide - great when you want to use the whole screen
I originally said it as just Nome but then people said I was saying it wrong so I changed my pronunciation as they said and now others are telling me its wrong once again. I've already researched this... apparently both pronunciations are correct.
you appeared to have defended this OS a lot but she made a valid point with the wallpaper hiding the menu. Yeah, wallpapers can affect that but it couldn't.
Once we do a Linux distro we try to stay away from them for a while. Unless of course it's a very old distro from the 90's or something that looks and functions very differently from what we have tried out.
This video actually tempts me to switch from Ubuntu to Pinguy. I have never heard of it until this, but it really does seem nice. I use Windows 8 mainly but have Ubuntu installed alongside.
Exactly 10 months ago I subscribed to your channel and I always watch your video with pleasure !!! I wonder if it is your job ? Please answer me, I like you !! (Don't forget to say to your mother that your videos are also watched in switzerland !!) From a Swiss subscriber !
Yes I duel booted it with windows 7 a while ago before I replaced it with Ubuntu gnome 13.04. I installed it to a 2nd internal hard drive though because I'm always cautious about the risks of partitioning one drive with your main os on it. My friend Daniel dual booted windows 7 with Ubuntu then adjusted the partition size post installation which corrupted 80% of all his files. He lost lots of work and had to reinstall windows 7. He's now got linuphobia...
That's why I like the idea of the AUR (Arch User Repository). People from anywhere can compile source code for Arch and release it as a repo that can be installed and uninstalled exactly the same way as the official repos, potentially making the pool of open source software for Arch larger than that of Ubuntu/Debian. Too bad Arch is a pain in the ass (specifically with setting up X11 and wifi)...
Looking back on some of your videos it reminds me of what I used in the past, starting with MS-DOS 3.1, then to windows 3.0 then 3.1, then 95, 98, 98se, refused me, then xp, now 7. (at least you didn't confuse your mum more in the dos 6.22 segment with command line piping which even most users back then didn't know how to do) a P75 system my father had came with MS Bob on top of win95 LOL q-basic infinite loop? -ctrl- -C- or -ctrl- -break- Now, next appropriate segment, Windows 3.5
It all depends on what you expect. Pinguy OS has a lot of software installed by default. Can you get windows 7 to work at full speed on a pc designed to work with windows xp? To be fair in the video they do run the test distro on the same pc, so can make a fair statement about how it runs compared to other tested distros.
Linux can have security programs like ClamAV (anti-virus), and firewalls (but nowadays, ISPs give you routers with built in firewalls). However, most of the time they're simply not needed. You can run linux perfectly fine without security tools (and indeed I do)
I would really like to see her try Manjaro linux. Its an Arch based distromade for both advanced users and beginers..Also comes with an openbox "flavor".
Though your mom is familiar with various Windows versions, I would be interested in her feedback regarding Windows NT4 with SP3 or later. NT4 was, in my opinion, the best UI Microsoft ever produced due to its simplicity and speed; I wonder how someone unfamiliar with it might react to it. It would be interesting to hear your mom's reaction to its interface. Keep in mind, I'm referring to NT4's original UI, not Active Desktop (you could upgrade NT4's UI to 'Active Desktop' after installing IE4)
lol I think that guy meant a TH-cam partner. Nice video on Pinguy never heard of it till now. Can you put like a shortcut on the desktop that would be the equivalent of C drive or the Macintosh HD?

You should let your mother explore a bit more in your future videos.
I love that wallpaper feature, especially as an out-of-the-box feature.
Diana you're fantastic, your husband is a lucky man and Philip is a very knowledgeable young man; one to make a parent proud.
I second that, he really does know his OSs, plus I would add Diana is a truly stunning woman also!
like she is the best mum ever

This poor woman has the patience of Job.
Yep she sure does. I hope they are monetizing this channel to pay for junior's college.
No. She has a job, She just likes to spend time with Philip with their channels.
Arek Warren not everyone in Australia is rich!

Version 13.04 is a six month release - this is ongoing work based on Ubuntu release to get it ready for the next LTS ( long term support) version.
real good thanks for taking time for us,,love your mum
I stopped watching your channel for like a Month, because I *literally, watched every video on your entire Channel XD*
Love watching these videos. It also helps my grandma learn some cool stuff about the OS's. COuld you try Fedora Core 1? It a very old linux based OS that I like to play around with. Its pretty cool
Its because my green screen isn't really a greenscreen. Either I'm slightly transparent or I glow... I think glowing looks better.
I got a say I love your guys videos keep up the works guys .
Thanks. I'll definitely do some research into the current distros.
Yay this video uses Happy Bee for the beginning! :D
***** I am a devout MacLeod fan. :P
"...it downloads random pictures off the internet and automatically uses them as desktop backgrounds."
What if it downloaded an explicit image during this?
+Hyfoxdro Yea, "interesting" images ;)
+Hyfoxdro Lel that would be funny
He would edit it out LMAO...
I'm not getting paid to promote any distro's or operating systems. We stay away from 3rd party influence to prevent bias in our videos.
Now i must steal my friends laptop, write 50 text documents all named tit then put the computer back in his room :)
Your mother, or sorry mum, is absolutely adorable.
Dear Phill,
Darwin is the Opensource core of Mac OSX and the base of Pure Darwin. Darling is the open source project to get OSX software to work under Linux and BSD, witch inculdes Pure Darwin.
i love the cool background changer
Webilder can be set to download photos as per your liking or just rotate photo from your own photo album.

You can make docky autohide - great when you want to use the whole screen
Great, glad to know you are a fan. I think I'd prefer her to try knoppix than Lubuntu.
victortran music on intro
Phillip and Diana: It's potentially noteworthy that Clementine is likely named as a reference to an American Fold song by the same name.
I know they did, but I feel that Phillip should have "determined" that earlier instead of postponing it until the task came...
I originally said it as just Nome but then people said I was saying it wrong so I changed my pronunciation as they said and now others are telling me its wrong once again. I've already researched this... apparently both pronunciations are correct.
Looks very customizable.
Very cool distro.
Many Distro's give you wireless out of the box but I'd go with Ubuntu if you want to be extra sure :)
i decide to use pinguy os 12.04 i just love it and these linux distros u do is awesome im ur biggest fan
Ubuntu forum has guides on how to do this.
There are a few threads on Pinguy forum too
New Intro? You mean the intro itself or the preintro? The OSFirstTimer Intro has been in every video since Ubuntu 4.10.
you appeared to have defended this OS a lot but she made a valid point with the wallpaper hiding the menu. Yeah, wallpapers can affect that but it couldn't.
Lubuntu is low in priority right now. Not the lowest priority though and definitely a higher priority than Ubuntu 13.10 when its released.
I love this OS so much!!!
They determined that if you watched the video further.
your clocks stopped about 4 hours ago
Nup and I pay her to do these so she's both saving and making money at the same time :)

Elementary OS is officially out now, wanna try it again?
ElementaryOS is a really fast and very clean OS. :)
Darwin is the kernel of Mac OS X. Darwin is open source. There is Darwin for Linux called OpenDarwin.
The opposite of that darn kali linux! Yay!
Upload it to sendspace. If it works it will be featured in the video after Tinycore Linux this coming weekend.
Can you do history of OS's?
it has been decided already.
Cool OS. Kinda worried about that desktop background changer, though.
Exactly 10 months ago I subscribed to your channel and I always watch your video with pleasure !!! I wonder if it is your job ? Please answer me, I like you !! (Don't forget to say to your mother that your videos are also watched in switzerland !!) From a Swiss subscriber !
Flo Telip are you still subscribed to osfirsttimer
You're correct. Both are correct. Apparently it's a regional thing.
Love your videos.
In my country, Conky is a dish made with corn meal :)
It could be an interesting distro... kinda shows the dark side of Linux.
Mum does a great job!
Great OS. But that desktop switcher downloading thing is a massive security risk.
Os first timer: You don't have to do lubuntu if you can't do it try knopoix.
P.S I think I'm your biggest fan.

"linuphobia" haha im guessing thats a phobia of linux
As you spoke about it in the video (kind of) how about doing a video on Darwin OS. It was the open source version OS that OS X and iOS are based.
That's why I like the idea of the AUR (Arch User Repository). People from anywhere can compile source code for Arch and release it as a repo that can be installed and uninstalled exactly the same way as the official repos, potentially making the pool of open source software for Arch larger than that of Ubuntu/Debian.

yeah , i agree too....
20:59 spine cut out standing up. hmm: Surgeon Simulator 2
Shes Getting Better with Linux
Os first timer: can you please let your mum try out lubuntu please

To be fair in the video they do run the test distro on the same pc, so can make a fair statement about how it runs compared to other tested distros.
Look at the Pinguy installation guide, Creating a PinguyOS Live USB
You will find it under support from the Pinguy home page
Darwin is not the name of the project; but such a project exists.
If you want something windozy you could get Linux mint. If you wanna try something like Ubuntu but with a different look then try Kubuntu.
Linux can have security programs like ClamAV (anti-virus), and firewalls (but nowadays, ISPs give you routers with built in firewalls).
However, most of the time they're simply not needed. You can run linux perfectly fine without security tools (and indeed I do)
happy 61k
the "G" is subtle
Hard G is correct, since it derives from the GNU project, which is also pronounced that way.
not enough to make worthy of another video
First Conky theme looks almost same like my on Linux Mint 15 :)
I´ve noticed that when you Chroma Keyed yourself in the Risc OS vid.
Darlin is the OS X compatibility layer... Darwin is the OS X kernel.. Get it?
i like configuring!
Dude, love the videos. What software do you use anyway?
Have your Mum try out the ancient OS BBC BASIC the one that came on the Acorn Archimedes
That should be a meme... "Interesting internet pictures!"
I would really like to see her try Manjaro linux. Its an Arch based distromade for both advanced users and beginers..Also comes with an openbox "flavor".
Already done
That is correct ..it's kinda like Gimp... I can't tell you how many ways people try to say that. :D
i think its time to make a new video where you are going to range the best and the worst distros.
Instead of 'see you next time', you should probably say 'see you next fortnight'

when i play minecraft with linux mint, i get 20 fps while i get 120 fps in windows
is there a reason why fps is lower in linux mint?
Blinking 420 at 12:10, I saw that! :D
420 BLAZE IT M8
+Kristian Martin “kmt94” Tvenning
Flashing 435 at 22:16. That is SO awesome!
F'n hippies.
it exceeds the 300mb limit
The random desktop background thing is Russian roulette: PC edition. Every 100th picture is gore or porn.
uploading it now. Anything I have to do afterwards?
Get her to try Windows 8.1
Its too similar and she uses it every day now so... she can't so an unbiased test of it.
