    Young man, you are inspiring! I've been using linux since the early 90s (when we had to compile everything), but I am yet to convert anybody. You have a bright future in training or education. Your mom is incredibly open minded, and she surely raised a wonderful son. Congratulations!

      Amrath Lol People don't like changing what they are familiar with, that's why KDE desktop is so appealing to many people... it looks a lot like Windows. Ubuntu's Unity desktop is a big change for most people, so they often get discouraged before they even test it out properly. BTW... it's good to duel boot when testing (even better as live CD) because it sucks to have to re-install an operating system (especially if you have to pay for it... like I did with Windows 8.1... needed Photoshop for work; but I'm really missing linux!)

    I think Desktop Environments are more akin to an OS than the kernal they run on. When I say I prefer Windows over OSX, I usually am refering to the aestheics or how programs run on it, the first is soley GUI the other has some what to do with the kernal, but more to do with software support. Gnome 3 is very different to Unity, Unity is very different to KDE, xfce, LXDE, Pantheon, Deepin, and so forth. In my mind are all different OSes, which are attempting to retell the desktop metaphor in a different way.

    Nice video. As a side note, ctrl+z doesn't "fully stop" a program. It simply stops the process from receiving or producing output - essentially, it is detached from the forefround. You can reattach it to the foreground by typing `fg %1` (where 1 is the number of the process, which you can see by typing `jobs`).
    In order to stop most programs you probably want to use ctrl+c which sends the kill signal and tells the program to terminate.
    cheers.

    • @Swenthorian
      @Swenthorian 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And for some (like ed) you need ctrl+d, which sends EOF.

  • @mrj505
    @mrj505 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ctrl-z does not terminate the program, it only "stops" it ("stop" in Linux really means freezing a program in a way that it can be resumed later)

      , that’s pretty much it, typographically speaking. The most important difference is usage, though. A hyphen is exclusively used in compound words, while a dash is mostly used to introduce parenthetical statements - like this one -, but can serve all kinds of different purposes.
      If I used an en dash in word, like this: "one-sided", it would still be considered a hyphen. From a linguistic point of view, at least.
      Come to think of it, maybe that’s why people call the hyphen character a dash. If it’s not being used as part of a compound word, it’s not really being used as a hyphen, after all.

    FYI, pressing CTRL+Z doesn't actually close programs. Instead, it freezes them and moves them into the background. They aren't going to use any CPU, but they will continue to consume RAM. You can unfreeze the program by typing "fg" (without quotes) to run the program in the foreground, or "bg" to run it in the background (useful if you want the program to keep processing information while you use other programs). If you want to close a program, CTRL+C is better, although you will have to unfreeze the program in the foreground.

    I'm a lifetime Windows user but I have to say Linux is a great OS for just the average user who basically uses the computer for email,social media,youtube etc... documents, spreadsheets etc.. this is perfect. But if you are into gaming you have to stick with Windows. If they ever came up with a way to run Windows games on Linux at fullspeed or faster than it does on Windows that would be amazing! I would seriously consider switching to Linux. But no DirectX in Linux would severely limit its usefulness for me. Yes, I know about Wine but that isn't mean for high end gaming.

    • @HazyJes
      @HazyJes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Classic80sStuff OpenGL is faster than DirectX everywhere but Winblows. You know why? MS cripples it on purpose so game devs have to use DX, and thus don't make games that work well on rival platforms. I don't know about you, but I can't in good conscience support a company that abuses its market position so hard.

      I believe the avatar of the OP is the Dutch flag?
      If that's accurate then it's probably reasonable to assume that the person in question is affiliated to that country in some way.
      That would potentially allow the OP to understand dutch.
      In other words he doesn't seem to be writing any gibberish pr say as far as I can tell...

Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs, and that you know you can do these things."

    I have few point that should be said:
    1) ArchLinux is not only distribution you can "build" from scratch. For example Ubuntu has minimal version (or Debian, Gentoo and many more). Main difference is used package manager. For example, instead of pacman you use atp-get.
    2) You can't actualy sell Linux. It's because of copyleft license. You can sell computers preistalled with Linux and offer support.
    3) Diana likes KDE and simplicity, try Slax (documenation is more simple).
    4) Great show :-)
