Your boat and style is so much more appealing to me than riding a jet ski. Cheers from the states. ZPLAA.
Thank you so much, but unfortunately in Australia Jet skis are on the rise. They are banned on Sydney Harbour so instead they head north to my area. But the police now have them and I've seen them fine people for speeding. What happened to the more gentle peaceful mode of transport? when fossil fuels are banned they will come back to sail. Thanks for watching cheers Paul
Once again a marvellous film. Need more be said about jet ski's, probably not.
Between you and Roger, you're making me so impatient for a sail.
Thanks Neil, check out my other videos, thanks for watching Cheers Paul
Thanks for the videos...love them! We are in southeastern North Carolina, and after 15 years away from sailing, we purchased a Catalina 25 in late fall. Since then I've been doing some overnight stays while getting her in sailing condition...and we are almost there! I love the simplicity of your approach/philosophy to sailing! Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure thanks for watching and the good news is that Stornaways are soon to be made in the States....stay tuned , cheers Paul
Absolutely great! Keep 'em coming!
Thanks Craig, thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Lovely nice windy day
Yep a good sail, thanks for watching Cheers Paul
I live in Newfoundland, Canada; a place with a long nautical history. I just LOVE your videos. I even built a little 16 ft. daysailer many years ago but I no longer sail. Keep up the good work!!
Wow that area is steeped in nautical history, if you have time check out some of my other videos on the playlist, cheers Paul
Foggy morning and birdsong are fantastic.
All the best from japan. gary
Thanks mate , yes I love the birds too always interesting, thanks for watching cheers Paul
Back on the water... that sounds very tempting to an old gaffer!
Thanks for watching cheers Paul
Never mind getting an old gaffer back on the water after watching your videos....I'm going to build my own little gaffer, partly as a result of watching you sail. However, inspiration can only take you so far. I'm not planning on becoming a professional chef despite watching you produce some .....erm.........interesting......meals! :)
Great, make sure you shoot some video and share it, everyone loves seeing a boat build. As for my cooking well what can I say.....the wine is good! Cheers Paul
love it, thanks very much......from near Eastbourne Sussex
Thanks Vernon for watching, check out my other videos on Sailing Kate Louise. I hope your new PM goes well cheers Paul from the Colonies
Living the life👍✌️
Thanks for watching cheers Paul
👍👍👍
Thanks for watching

Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Another great video & thanks for taking us out on the water again Paul. Love the scenery, colours of the Hawkesbury & shots of the shoreline in the mystical fog.
Glad you enjoyed it thanks for watching cheers Paul
Oh my god.
Paul this is your best ever video !!
Iam having a bourbon and just devouring your vid.
I have good tears in my eyes, savoring the sights and sounds of that waterway, I have sailed on many times, with beautiful memories.
Please keep putting out your Beautiful videos.
Thank you Ian T.
Thank you so much, it takes a couple of days to edit, so it's good to hear that the effort is worthwhile. I hope to get out on the water more this summer so stay tuned. Thanks again for your support, Cheers Paul
Another great video Kate Louise! My wife and I just spent the day sailing that very same area!! It is lovely and I also plan a few overnighters in the area soon, a worthwhile endeavor. And who needs all that French wine and cheese that Roger Barnes gets when we have the National Parks of NSW around us!
I couldn't agree more, but I do like wine....and cheese, thanks for watching and see you on the water.
Enjoying your video, from over the ditch.
Thanks John, cheers Paul
Hi Paul
This is a bit out of date, but I have only just started to watch your videos. About 15 years ago we had a boat (of the stinky variety) moored on the Hawkesbury. It turned into my favourite place.
Watching your videos has jump started my memories of the fun times and I am in the process of buying a 16' skiff to do some dinghy cruising and camping.
While I have various boats over many years, sailing will be a first!
I am very much looking forward to the experience and hope we can catch up on the water one day.
Cheers
Bill Esler
Great Bill, I'm glad you have come over from the dark side😄 Do you live nearby we can go for a sail together, when you are ready, cheers Paul
Hello from Wisconsin, USA. I really like your boat and plan on getting into sailing myself. We are close to the Great Lakes of Michigan and Superior so the opportunity for big water sailing is there. Be safe out there….. great videos!
Thanks David, let me know what boat you decide on when the time comes and shoot some video, Cheers Paul
Hi, been following you for a few weeks now, great shows and lovely boat,
I'm back in Portsmouth now after 25 years in Spain, Portugal I've restored one sailing dinghy and now on too my second, enjoying my sailing again, keep the shows coming 😎👍
Thanks for your support, and shoot some video , I would love to see the south coast again, cheers Paul
Never worry about looking stupid when things go wrong. We all do it and we can learn from your mistakes :) Just love the peace and serenity
Thanks for watching.....I must fix that pole, cheers Paul
Wonderful video. Great sailing. That foggy morning was magical. Thanks for sharing.
Yep it was something different, thanks for watching cheers Paul
Liked the vid, greetings from a sailor from the Netherlands
Thanks for watching, send me a photo of your boat to sailingkatelouise@gmail.com cheers Paul
I am watching your videos in random order, as I just found your site and sees the videos as TH-cam reccomends them. For a long time I have been wondering about the handles on either side of the cabin door, but now I just saw that they are "old-man-handles" to help move from side to side in the cockpit 🤣. Smart!!!
With love from Denmark 🙂
Hi Bent yes unfortunately the grab handles on the cabin bulkhead are plastic and the ones on the roof are timber. I've been meaning to make some timber ones to match but haven't got around to it yet. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
loving it. your films are as good as any out there.
Thanks for your support and watching, cheers Paul
Thanks for another entertaining video, I really enjoyed it, please keep them coming. The Hawkesbury River is such a nice place sail, the scenery is fantastic.
My pleasure ,hopefully I can do more midweek sails and avoid the crowds, as it really is beautiful around there, thanks for watching cheers Paul
After watching your videos it makes me want to go over the marina and take my coaster out for a spin, without videos such as yours giving me the urge to sail, i'd probably just sit in the warm at home and read. Keep them coming, most enjoyable. Thanks
My pleasure...we are about 3 weeks until summer officially starts, but this year it's predicted to be wet. But hopefully that won't stop me getting out on the water a bit more, keep watching cheers Paul
Plant based guy here. Nice to see your veggie meals! Also, the lakes in central Texas look fairly similar to the lake you're in.
Thanks for watching, my wife says I have to lift my game in the galley, cheers Paul
A misty morning - so wonderful x thanks Paul, the boys and I loved watching this one :) Holly, Luca & Gene from Hobart
Ps Gene says “see mum, real boats have boarding ladders”…
Thanks for watching, I think I met Holly on the zoom a couple of weeks ago. I have made 2 rope ladders, the first one was just rope,- hurt the bottom of your feet. The second had timber steps and rope, but both were useless getting into the boat as your legs just went under the hull. So this gunwale ladder should work especially for swimming in deeper water.....but haven't tried it yet. Thanks again Cheers Paul
Can't wait to buy my first dingy and go cruising in Alaska
You will never regret it, have fun, post some videos, everyone likes to see different cruising destinations, thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Thanks for a great video mate. Good to see your set up... Sydney's Roger Barnes 👍👍
Too kind, thanks for your support cheers Paul
I enjoyed the video very much. Nice looking sailboat.
Thank you so much cheers Paul
Magic couple of days. I’m the guy who saw you on lake macq in the inflatable with the 2 kids. Since then I have my own boat and we sail up this way often and camp out. Hopefully see you again soon.
Well done, yep what sort of boat did you get? and I will keep an eye out for you, thanks for watching Cheers Paul
@@SailingKateLouise cheers Paul she’s a beneteau Oceanis 35.1 called Mockingbird.
Thanks again, Paul, for your generosity in taking us with you. The season here in northern Japan is cooling-to-cold, and I have had to put my crafts (kayak, canoe and Seahopper) away until... the promise of spring. At least I can continue, vicariously, with Kate Louise!
As they say here no worries, you will have to get the skis out. Thanks for watching cheers Paul
@@SailingKateLouise But I'll be damned if I have to put away the grill yet... "Stand your ground!"...; )
Great video Paul.
The misty morning looked amazing.
All the best,
Paul. ⛵
Yep really different and a nice surprise, thanks for watching cheers Paul
Good to see im not the only who puts ribbons on the shrouds
Unfortunately they came off later, but I won't give up and get some more. Cassette tape is good but doesn't last long. Thanks for watching, Cheers Paul
@@SailingKateLouise Yeah mine came off in 25kts and I need to get more.
what a beautiful boat I came here because of Roger Barnes but your video's are just as interesting so I subscribed and will first go bench watching your video's and than go look if such a beautiful boat is for sale in the Netherlands we got a lot of water to
Thanks for watching, I know traditional sail boats are very popular in the Netherlands, Cheers Paul
So many water ways to explore. Great video.
Thanks for watching Cheers Paul
Currently locked down at home with Covid 19, love passing the time away watching your videos. It’s the next best thing to being there. Looking to build a John Welsford Pathfinder when I can. And in the meantime sailing a “Shellback” 11 & 1/2 foot lug sail dingy. Which I’ll do a little bit of sheltered cruising with till I can get the Pathfinder underway. Best from Brad Lyttelton Harbour South Island NZ.
Hi Brad, there are a couple of Navigators in our group, and make sure to post some build photos of the Pathfinder, when the time comes or even video. Thanks for watching and I hope you feel better soon , cheers Paul
Thanks for inviting us aboard on your adventures! What regs do you need to follow?
Regs ?
Hey Paul... yay, 9.22 - i think that's ME you're talking about!? Darn right, what a summer I had! Thanks to you. I just thought - you made the dinghy cruising seem so calm and possible for 1 person, I'd give it a go. Ended up spending my entire 2 week 'staycation' on the local estuary (Dart River), camping aboard 14 nights straight. Got so confident, I even took her out to sea, all alone, around Start Point, and all the way to the Salcombe estuary. That was pretty bl**dy scary, but all fine in the end. It's cold and damp here now, boat's in the garage needing some love and paint, looks like a cracking weekend you had on the water, makes me long for next summer now. Next video, can we see how you recover the boat single-handed onto the trailer? I needed to rope in the wife to get mine out, she wasn't too pleased ha ha...
Great to hear you had a wonderful summer in the old country....I love Dartmouth and yes it was you I was referring to. We are nearly into summer here but it's been pretty wet and it looks like we will have a wet summer due to the El Nino Pacifc current effect, last summer it was all bushfires!!! Check out my latest video Joy of Sailing....I was up at Lake Macquarie, 1 1/2 hrs north of Sydney with Steve and his Iain Oughtred Fulmar, we had a great sail and overnight.I have never filmed hauling out because there is often a queue at boat ramps here and ramp rage is not unheard of. But if it's a quiet day I will.It is always easier with 2, but I manage by myself if the ramp is not too steep and the tide is in. Thanks for watching again and as they say "Fair Winds"
cheers Paul
Great vid, we are missing the sun here in the UK. You are keepin my going
My pleasure ,thanks for watching cheers Paul
Great video Paul as usual. I'll look out for you when I'm on the water.
Thanks for watching cheers Paul
I really like watching your videos. I live near the great lakes in Michigan and would like to find or start a group like you guys have. But first I'm gonna need a boat lol. I'll be sure to email you some pics, if and when it happens. Hopefully by this summer.
Great please stay in touch, cheers Paul
So nice to know they have lifted the restrictions. I enjoyed your trip. The fog as it lifted looked amazing. Shame about losing your readers, at least you had a spare pair. Atb.
I always have something go wrong, but had a great time , thanks for watching
Terrific video, Paul. Thanks for allowing us to join you aboard. Waking up to that fog must have been magical. Cheers mate!
Yep it was glorious and different, thanks for watching cheers Paul
G'day mate. As usual another great little episode. As I've said before, I'm loving your "Kate Louise." Thank you for sharing. Take care. Atb from across the ditch here in Nz.
My pleasure thanks for watching, stay safe cheers Paul
Beautiful video and nice cruiser. The misty morning was a magical camp. You call that rig a lug? A yawl? I’m not a sailor; but, I love what you’re doing and could see myself doing that. I live on the south east coast of Texas with much wind and nice bays. The big reason I’m not out there is $$ and skill. Sailing the ocean is no joke. Texas
Thanks for watching, it's a lug sail yawl because there is no boom and the mainsail is in front of the mast and a yawl because the mizzen mast is behind the rudder, if it was in front it would be called a ketch. I watch a lot of dingy cruising on youtube in the states on Chesapeake bay in Virginia- check out "eye in the hand" there's some great traditional timber boats. Thanks for watching cheers Paul
I like your little cook top box idea!!👍Especially being able to put it in the cockpit. I might have to make something similar.
Roger Barnes has a good video on "the galley box."
Yep, it can store about 3 days of dried food and a few tins. I did another video giving more detail and measurements, check out the playlist. Also Roger Barnes has one as well as Steve on Arwen's meandings which is where I got the idea. Thanks for watching Cheers Paul
@@SailingKateLouise I'll check it out
Nice to see your season getting started as mine wraps up. The winter covers are already on my Eun Mara "Marianita" but I'm optimistic about getting in a sail or two between storms. Not so sure "Kate Louise"qualifies as a dinghy, she's more of a small boat. Looking forward to more videos.
Thanks for watching.....I know it's a long stretch to call it a dinghy, but at 18 ft I like to think it's a dinghy with a roof. Cheers Paul
can see the attraction
Thanks for watching cheers Paul
16 mins in 23-24c warm in UK that's hot
Thanks mate, yep I fondly remember Surrey, we lived in Milford nr Godalming. At the moment we are getting more of English weather which is unusual for Sydney....climate chance! It has rained heavily for 3 weeks solid. There is major flooding everywhere up the east coast so I'm going a bit stir crazy....hopefully I'll be able to get in a sail in the next couple of weeks. It has to stop raining soon!!! cheers Paul
enjoying your videos ! b bill
Thanks for watching
Paul your videos are fascinating. I’ve had a goal for many years to build my own boat, and the Stornoway 18’ looks like an excellent fit for me. You may have covered this in another video, but did you build her?
Hi Matthew alas no, I bought her from a retired gentleman in Queensland. However they come as a flat-pack kit to speed up construction for diyers, many parts pre-cut or you can have it built for you. They were made in the U.K. in the 90's but , most were made here in Queensland. If you are interested contact Derek Ellard at www.scruffie.com or on facebook. As this design is about 25 years old there are updates coming and a fibreglass version will be available. I should also say they are shipped around the world. Thanks for watching, I hope this helps, cheers Paul
Can’t see afr enough. Do you have a topping lift on the mizzen? Helps if you need to scandalise the sail. JB
Hi John, no I don't have a topping lift for the mizzen, there is a brailing line on the original plans but I didn't think it was necessary, I just lift up the mizzen boom an use a sail tie. Cheers Paul
One of your top 5 videos Paul ! I really enjoy your channel, the relaxed sailing and love Kate Louise! I am trying to convert a 17' Siren sloop to a more manageable Lug Yawl similar to Kate Louise's sail plan. Can you share with me the areas of each sail and height of main mast...... it would be handy for comparison. Enjoy your summer season sailing....we are headed into winter here in New England, USA so busy putting boats away.
Are you intending just to have a main? or a genoa and mizzen as well let me know and I will measure up
Hi Mast is 4.4m Mizzen 2.4 m sail area 17.85sq m
@@SailingKateLouise Thank you Paul, that is very helpful. My boat has a 13.5 sq m sail plan as a Bermuda rig....so I will be trying to keep it near the same. Yes I will have a main lug sail, a mizzen and a headsail on boomkin as well. My current plan for the mast height is 4.05m and 2.13m mizzen. So since my boat is slightly smaller with only a centerboard, as compared to Kate Louise, I think my plans will be fine. I plan to move the mast forward into a welded aluminum tabernacle similar to Kate Louise.
Make sure you check out the "centre of effort" CE vs CLR "centre lateral resistance" which will become important if you want move the mast and want a well balanced boat
@@SailingKateLouise Yes, thanks. I ran the numbers with a lug sail and the mast needs to go forward 14".....with a Gunter not so much.
Hi Paul, I notices that you have a line around your shrouds on Port and Starboard sides going to the gunwale back up to the wire shroud.
Why don’t you just have a shackle from the wire to the gunwale chain plate?
And how long does it take you to rig her ?
Thanks for the information to come.
Hi, the shrouds with none stretch line allow for some adjustment if needed and that is the original design. It takes about 20-30 mins to get all set up, loaded and in the water....depending on how busy the ramp is.But the actual rigging is quick, I leave the genoa attached and the mizzen sail on the mizzen mast. So it's simply lifting the mast using the genoa halyard attaching the forestay and dropping in the mizzen. Thanks for watching Cheers Paul
@@SailingKateLouise thanks Paul very much appreciate it.
Nice video! I enjoy seeing it now it is winter at this side of the planet. Would using a boom give a better speed to the boat? I have no experience with lugsail but I am making one (with boom) for my inflatable sailing kayak Briesje for the next season. The simple rigging of a lugsail seems to me to be a great advantage.
Hi yes lugsails are great and yes a boom would make the sail more efficient. But the the designer- Derek Ellard had a bad experience with a boom and vowed never to put one on any of his designs.
Thanks for watching cheers Paul
Love your little sail boat and enjoy the videos. No 4 legged friend to chum along ?
Paul, a seasoned sailor , Ontario Canada
Alas no and our cat is not really a sailor, thanks for watching, Cheers Paul
With your love of sailing and of nature, I see you with a dog. While I share my life with my wife if 48 years , there is also Kate, our yellow Labrador Retreiver. And now about sailing hats . The ubiquitous baseball hat is a wind catcher while the Greek fisherman's is shaped is not. I have one that comes from your area of the world. I spent 1998 working and yacht racing in New Zealand . I purchased a New Zealand , sheeps wool , Greek style cap , which I still wear. While having owned others , it is my favourite. Happy sails
Paul
I love your current video. Yes cruising and living aboard is fantastic. Your dehydrating of
foods for cruising is a fantastic idea. You lock in the flavour while extending shelf life. Boy, your rain falls quite heavily. Hope you tell us more about the flora and fauna .
Paul in Canada
Do you always reply? He he. Just checking. I always enjoy your vids. Very laid back.
Of course I always reply Anthony, unlike some other channels. If you have gone to the effort to right a comment, it's only polite for me to respond.
Thanks for watching and those kind words, cheers Paul
I see that you have a tent above the entrance, is there no hatch to the Cabin or is it for better ventilation?
Hi There is a canvas cabin cover but I rarely use it unless it's raining. There is not enough space forward, for a standard sliding hatch. But this design allows for easy access to halyards on mast. Thanks for your comments and watching cheers Paul
Are the moorings put there by a local authority. On a first com basis 😊.
Yes, we are lucky around Sydney, there are lots of public mooring and also private, but the common protocol is you can use private moorings unless asked to move, cheers Pal
That was capsized captured
No, unfortunately the camera was on but not recording. It would have made some great footage. Thanks for watching cheers Paul
I noticed your mainsail has no boom! Was it designed that way or did you remove it?
Hi Kate Louise is a Lugsail , so there is no boom just a yard to hold up the mainsail. This old style was originally used in fishing boats as it allowed for less ropes, simple rig and more deck space. However without a boom the sail is less efficient as the twist can't really be controlled...
but she looks nice. Thanks for watching , cheers Paul
A Selway Fisher design Stornoway?
Hi, no the Stornaway 18 is a Derek Ellard design built by Scruffie marine in Queensland. They come as an owner builder kit with many parts pre-expoxied or can be built by Scruffie marine. Thanks for watching, Cheers Paul
@@SailingKateLouise Ahhhh, good to hear Scruffie are still going, i recall reading an article about the "14" in a Brit mag many many years ago. I asked as the aft run to the transom was not like the Selway, and some home builders take liberties. Shes a peach for sure!
