I watched this on TV in South Korea 50 years ago. I was wating for each episode then. I am really glad to watch this great one again! Thank you!!

used to watch this as a kid. all bang bang and boom. now 50 years later enjoying the moral of the story. gosh it was well written
An excellent double-header that got the best of every actor in the series. It rivaled some of the great WW2 escape movies too.
One of the outstanding features of this series were the excellent casting choices for guest actors used in each episode.

I remember watching this when it originally aired in '63, one of the best episodes of Combat.
I used to watch this all the time as a kid, sometimes with my Dad, who fought in that war and in Korea. We used to have fun picking apart some episodes. Like where a German would run out from cover and get shot. He told me that German soldiers weren't that stupid and were damn good soldiers. He thought ole Sarge did a great job and he knew some Sergeants just like Morrow had portrayed. These shows are still captivating.
In one episode, a German Officer posed as a priest, where LittleJohn told him that Germans were smart.
I can't remember the episode and the name of the guest star escapes me, even though I clearly see his face.
I believe many American soldiers respected the Germans as capable fighters and thinkers.
I agree with your Dad. Two episodes stand out strongly qualifying his point: The Duel and Anatomy of a Patrol.

@@alicel3992 James Whitmore was the 'priest' and did a great job! It was funny how he was incessantly bothered by Americans when he was trying to just blow up the bridge. Anatomy of a Patrol had James Caan in one of his first roles. You can tell even them what a great actor he was as well. I still watch it, as most of the rest of the stuff on TV is garbage. I haven't had cable or satellite in years. I watch my favorite DVD's or use YT which is free on my TV. Take care

I fired direct tv 20 plus years ago bc my young daughter and I were watching a family show BUT the commercials were obscene. I called and complained but was told they can't do anything about it. So I took action and have never regretted it. I agree, DVDS and Utube are the way to go.

Actor Richard Basehart (Admiral Nelson from Seaview). He would have been 103 years old on September 17th, 2017. A very realistic actor who played his characters' to the hilt. Lost him much too soon in 1984 after the LA Olympics. Always a tribute to see his line of work. Bless him always.....RMA; Bakersfield, CA....
He also portrayed Adolf Hitler in a movie about Hitler. I think it was in 1960 when the movie was released. I watched it on TV many years ago. Sometime in the early mid 70's I think.

I wish I had car insurance, but as of June ‘22 fuel is almost $5.00/ gallon. I tuned
in to see how men move on the ground, but sure saw the white van flash by outside the fence above. Bicycle a welcome alternative, and glad truck gathered
our guys for escape.

Yes as he says "get back idiot" a van goes by on the set road. Thes scene must have been filmed in Los Angeles studios.

Thanks for uploading Combat! Loved it as a kid. Too bad tge MGM backlot that had the french town got bulldozed but I recognize Franklyn Canyon by Beverly Hills where they shot this one. Still love it. Jack Hogan (Kirby) is the only one of the cast still living. "Caje" passed in 2014. R.I.P. Vick, Rick, Dick, and Pierre!

This is one of the episodes that really just puts a tear in your eye. The courage and spirit exhibited...of those who went through somewhat similar situations in WW2 is worthy of such expression, but also the level of writing of this episode, that quite frankly should have won an award, along with the brilliance of the directing, and acting of Vic Morrow, Rick Jason, Jack Hogan, Dick Peabody, Pierre Jalbert, Tom Lowell, Conlan Carter, and with some stellar starring roles of Richard Basehart, James Sikking and Simon Oakland..
I wish they all had gotten awards but no. They give it to people with no talent that's why I never watch AWARD shows,they are so repetitive same talentless people win!

If this is one of the better épisodes (and I too think it is), it is because it gives more room to secondary players besides the "Kommandant" played by Richard Basehart. Yes, through very clever gerrymandering inspired by Sergeant Saunders (Vic Morrow) thanks to his own thinking through the problem, they escape. Still the secondary players here, I believe, deserve some mention.First off, the other sergeant played by Isidor Simon Weiss (Oakland) He originally started off his career as a concert violinist. His cinematic contributions include: "Psycho", West Side Story", "Tony Rome", " The Sand Pebbles". After a long struggle against cancer, Simon left us in 1983 at the relatively young age of 68. Next in line has to be: Woodrow Parfrey; born of Welsh immigrants. Incidentally Woodrow, fought, was wounded and captured by the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge which may explain in part how Woodrow brought an offbeat, quirky charisma that was relatively unknown in either TV or cinema rôles before the 1960's and in this part as the pathetic grocer is no exception. Almost an anti-hero here who claims his share of heroism at the very end. Woodrrow put in many TV and movie appearances from the 60' and just into the 1980's: "Papillon", in a couple of Clint Eastwood productions; "Dirty Harry", " The Outlaw Josey Wales". Woodrow left us in 1984 at the young age of 61 from a heart attack. Glenn Canon (Rankin) played in at least 5 épisodes of Combat, many other TV séries such as " 77 Sunset Strip" , " Hawaii 5- O," "Magnum P.I. plus many other TV séries and TV movies. Glenn left us in 2013 at the age of 80 of undisclosed causes. Next, Arthur Batanides (Nader): Arthur did stand up routines in front of fellow G.I.s in Europe during WWII.He played in a few épisodes of Star Trek (original séries), the Twilight Zone, the Time Tunnel, Mission Impossible or in a spoof of it in Get Smart. After playing in Police Academy 6, Arthur retired from acting in 1989. Arthur left us in 2000 at the of 76 of natural causes. Finally, on this roster, James Sikking who here plays Lyles, is perhaps best known for his rôle in Hill Street Blues. He played in the 60's soap opera, General Hosptial for a few years. "The New Centurions". After Hill Street Blues he returned more strongly to the cinema in: "Ordinary People", "StarTrek III", The Search for Spock". Ending the '90's with "Brooklyn South" and his last movie in the new millenium, "Just an American". Born in 1934, as of this writing, James is still with us. Merci pour le téléchargement!

thanks for posting this tv series, i remember when i was a kid i never miss a single episode. honestly, i feel like younger again, because i still feel the excitement for a kid watching war series like this.so thanks again, i from the philippines!
The present-day Chinese do not realize how much fighting the Filipinos did against the much larger Japanese army during the early part of World War 2, much like what the Ukrainian people are doing now. Most of the American army stationed in the Philippines at the beginning of the Pacific war was actually 75% Filipino!

Start watching at 13:25 look behind the German solider.. a car clearly goes by. I thought they were in a forest or something? Also they might say it was a military car etc, but it did not look like one to me, judging by the roof. A clear goof. But otherwise a great show and episode. Reminded me of 2 other movies I saw. one was named Custer of the West .. you see the US Calvary pinned down by a creek and as the 2 men go down and put markers to estimate the shotguns the Indians are using, the ride back up. Clearly you see the sun reflecting on the windshield of a car behind them on a road up there. another movie this happened was ROBIN HOOD with Errol Flynn. Fantastic movie if you never saw it.. really puts you in the mood for medieval days. Some scene you see as Robin Hood and his man are in the forest, a car clearly drives by in the background, fairly close. It was filmed in California , representing Nottingham. again great movie, but you always see such things in films.
Whatever happened to Vic Morrow in combat they need to put this back on me TV instead of stupid Charlie's Angels that's worth watching

Again, I also thank you for posting these--I last saw them back then, in the 1960's, when they were prime-time . My father--and virtually all the adult men I knew--were GI's in WW2. I grew up with a deep respect for their contribution, and Combat! was a first-rate (and popular) TV show. I often asked if it was really like that, and my father would chuckle and say "sometimes..", enigmatically. As for the viewers who argue that the Wehrmacht were soldiers like most others, that certainly can't be applied to the SS--including the Waffen SS--who were Nazis first and foremost.

peter okeefe - Nazi apologist. The SS - all of them - swore allegiance to Hitler, not to Germany. They were the nastiest bunch of killers that existed.
Most of the were recruited from the dregs of human society and enjoyed killing and torture. Try asking anyone who actually lived there at that time.
I am over 70 and have not merely studied history but lived it. Of course it is the victors that write history and one must always take any statement - from either side - with a lot of salt, but facts are facts. The Nazis themselves kept records and took photos which are all available to any interested party. The Russians are a different subject altogether and you cannot defend the Nazis by bringing in the Russians. As for Nazi evil - try reading Mein Kampf.

Same here. When I was a kid, it was all about the shooting, stuff being blown up. Now at 70, there is a morel to every show.
Baseheart was perfect for this part. Cold, calculating with no wide variety of emotion.

Richard Basehart, was the commander of Voyage to the bottom of the sea. I ran home everyday in the 5th grade to watch this before anyone got the TV in my mom and dads room. Must of been a mile all down hill.

Some of that shooting Sgt Saunders did with a pistol at relatively long range of at least 50 feet was quite remarkable. He was a real marksman.

A.C. or D.C. voltage? Europe is 240volts. not sure if ac or dc. but i think it is ac. 120volts has more of an effect of freezing your muscles. 240volts hits harder, has more of a tendacity to knock you off. the US is a 60HZ while Europe is 50hz i think.
Most likely AC. And it's not the volts, it's the amps that kill you.

Thanks for posting. Something interesting occurred at about 13 minutes 30 seconds point. A blooper- an modern automobile passed behind the German Guard watching Sgt Saunders. But still a good episode.

To avoid a beating, I would of at least made something up as to the troup stength of the American forces, and where, as to satisfy the interigation of the German comandant. It would at least stall for time while Saunders and company plans for an escape.

It is the war drama which was being looked forward to when I was young.

After Doc's rejoinder to threats of "how severe pain can be" - there's a terrific example 1960's television's depth: the commandant sits in the very chair Doc sat in - as he "ripped thier masks off" - an acknowledgement of the Doc's adroit perspicacity.

Yeah, noticed him in the previous epi. "That face sure looks familiar..." It's kind of a game I play with these old shows - Spot the bit player who later became a big name. This show and Peter Gunn have a ton.
great fight sceen I would think basehaert would have overpowed him some other way but the eye rake was a great fight sceen. how do they shoot the fight sceen anyone know. I saw his fingers were up high. over his eye. love these 2 shows.
