When I was in 8th grade I hung around a radio shop on Saturdays the last hour of the day was spent watching combat. I'm 74 now and the owners Larry and John are long gone, I moved on to become an electrical engineer. My memories are not gone I love this show. Some time I want to cry.

Seeing that Richard Basehart was starring in these two episodes, I knew they would be great! Richard Basehart also played a German officer in the movie Escape of the Birdmen with Doug McClure and Chuck Conners...which also was really good.

I saw Richard Basshart in person. He was a very short man.
I saw this episode back in 1963, American actor Richard Basehart plays the Kraut cut-throat, but the troops defeat the krauts and escape. Sgt. Saunders and his men are great.

Thanks for posting all these videos I have watch back to back episodes from se1 to the very last episode in color from the ones you posted ....it was on every night on cable in the 80s liked the show in my teens early 20s great show very good effects for 1964 ...
The Thompson sub machine gun fires 45 caliber ammunition. So does the 45 pistol he carries. The magazine he carries for it holds a maximum of 50 rounds. At most he carries two extra magazines. The way he burns through ammo, he would be out in less than five minutes. Both the M1 and the BAR fire 30-06 ammo so it would do Saunders no good no matter how much ammo other members of the squad had. He would be engaged in a firefight armed only with a knife and a club which is what the Thompson becomes after there is no more ammo for it.
Didn't take long to learn in Vietnam, in the field, you almost never put the selector switch on your M16 on full auto. Do that and it doesn't take long to burn through the ammo you carry. Also, if you fire it full auto, you will spend more time changing magazines than you do firing.
Combat is a great and very enjoyable series with a lot of good lessons, but it's a long way from being realistic.
Beg to differ but that straight mag for the Thompson was 30 round max with smaller ones being 20, the round drum magazines popular in the 1930s movies were either 50 or 100 rounds.

the great Richard Basehart under appreciated actor it was soon after this he got the role of Admiral Nelson on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea the TV series he also stared in " Fix bayonets and the Satan bug " he had a wide range of acting skills he was even in the pilot for the Knight Rider TV series and shortly after that he passed away from cancer . he is dearly missed .

YES, HE WAS AN EXCELLENT ACTOR. TOO BAD HE DID "VOYAGE" THOUGH, IT HAD HORRIBLE ACTING EFFORTS BY EVERYONE, PROBABLY HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE DIRECTOR & PRODUCER. IRWIN ALLEN WAS PUTTING OUT ALL SORTS OF SHOWS LIKE THAT AT THE TIME.

@@thetruth3768 How many people know him mostly for Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea? There are probably plenty of actors who didn't have their own series that hardly anyone remembers today.
Gotta love this series ... I was always told the BAR man walked in the rear of the squad so to be protected and have a defended position upon attack not carrying the BAR as third man up front .....anyways, back in the day I did not know better watching this as a kid, but having lived in California you can definitely tell it was shot right in California. Eucalyptus trees, manzanita reddish hard as rock shrub/trees, bamboo sprouts, hilly dry adobe clay dirt and rolling dry hills everywhere and all those year round constant green plants and shrubs they only have in California.
If this isn't yet proof, it's certaily a good example of Sergt. Saunders (Vic Morrow) proving his prowess in fighting psychological warfare against his enemy and finally outsmarting him too. Here as the main guest star, we are so fortunate to have Richard Basehart playing the S.S. captain. His deep resonant voice and his ability to imitate various accents, though here he sounds more English than German to me, gave him a wider range of rôles to play. Actually, only concentration camps were headed by S.S. officers but not POW camps. But this was neither. It was supposed to be a holding camp of some sort, so who knows? Basehart gained reknown from the late1940's on in the cinema, from "Cry Wolf", " "Fourteen Hours", then by the '50's "Moby Dick". After the sudden death of his first wife he moved to Italy marrying the actrice Valentina Cortese, played in a number of Italian movies such as "La Strada" by Fellini. By the 1960's this marriage failed and Bashart returned to the U.S. but by then the number of movie rôles for him had dried up. I am sure most of you are already aware of the TV series " Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea." Personally, one of my favorites is " The Andersonville Trial (1970) where he played the Swiss born Confederate POW commandant, Henry Wirz. After a number of strokes, Richard Basehart left us at the relatively young age of 70 in 1984. Merci pour le téléchargement:

I worked for a jerk of an E7 who introduced himself as "My name is Sergeant First Class C********r."
Can't remember the other sarge's name, but I did notice James Sikking (later to star on Hill Street Blues) behind him.
His name was Simon Oakland. Had a long tv movie career. He passed away August 29, 1983 from cancer, on his birthday.
Sikking played the casual hit man in the Lee Marvin movie "point blank".

Also, curious combination of old style , "chinless" Totenkopf and Wehrmacht style eagle. Who knows?. It might have been "intentionally fudged", with Basehart not wanting to wear something "too accurate"
As much as I love combat, the wardrobe dept screwed up the german insignia beyond belief...The deaths head is wrong, besides being in the wrong spot, and the eagle above is incorrect as well..along with the sleeve eagle..

You don't start a patrol without a full ammo belt and at least two bandos per rifleman. Saunders would have had seven Thompson magazines, a loaded 1911 with four more mags, and Kirby would have had a full BAR belt plus the mag in the gun, and his designated ammo bearer would have had another belt full. Kirby and his ammo bearer would have had as many loaded BAR mags as they could scrounge in their rucks. The squad would have had several frags apiece, some smoke and concussion grenades and probably some rifle grenades. Apparently in this instance they were returning from a patrol wherein they'd been in contact and worked through some of their loadout.
Very good conjecture but the boys always travel light!

It's a fine episode as far as war shows go....but....the reality would have been that the 'krauts' would have machine gunned the captured americans right on the spot of surrender. The 'boche' rarely if ever showed mercy to those captured.....

my family fought in the dutch resistance, in the winter of 44 they took all the food my aunt was tortured by the gestapo, i would not give you a plugged nickel for a soviet soldier or german one , i think the only people in this war with any ouncce of humnity was le americaine, they were different then, damn boche rot in hell

I've loved "Combat" since I was a kid in the early 60's. Not to "nitpik" but in reality a Sergeant (E-5) in a front line recon role like Saunders wouldn't be given ANY Strategic information whatsoever for fear of capture. Saunders should have freely gave information in exchange for good treatment, hot food, cigarettes, etc, for his men since he wouldn't have enough information to truly help his captors. Taking care of my men would come first, but it is just TV...

And also Combat was known for a lot of accuracy in their research. Many people here are nitpicking. When you are doing a TV series that is quite a grind from what I've heard. It's 12-14 hour days...especially for a one hour show which is said by many actors to be 3 times the work of a half-hour show.
All in all I think ABC and the producers did a great job on this show. Every penny is on the screen.
Why aren't they wearing division patches.
And I'm just the opposite. Sure, it's a tough job getting all the facts and details right, but at least nobody died because of a screwup. But it increases my knowledge of the history of WWII when people point out details like this. And you could've have just ignored the comments if they bother you so much.

It would appear to be a lightly-equipped recon patrol sent out to gather intel and to cover as much ground as possible, as quickly as possible and preferably without engaging the enemy. Note the absence of backpacks and the limited ammo carried by each squad member.
The blackened faces, absence of helmets, fatigue and blisters would seem to indicate that it had started out the evening before as a night patrol. Helmets were never worn at night because they made too much noise, especially when a squad moved through thick vegetation.
To this, one needs to add the problem of sound being greatly amplified at night, hence, I suppose, the logical decision to leave helmets behind.
I did wonder about Sarge not wearing his famous camo helmet, but hey - recon patrol.

He would have out-medaled Sir Audie. I'm only at the start of season 2 and I've already counted over 30 purple hearts, a couple dozen or so each bronze and silver stars and DSM, and at least six MOH. With my luck they'd have written me an MSM and downgraded it to a stinkin ARCOM.

The Germans were combat troops, therefore were the Waffen SS, nothing to do with the "plain" SS, the ones in charge of concentration camps and persecuting anti-Nazi civilians. The Waffen SS were sort of "normal" troops with extra training and better equipment. Regards
SS were fanatical for Hitler, they have been in this army branch for that !!! they have donne terrible murders on civilian populations and militiary POW. Not warriors, just murderers with an uniform...

+Jack Olson Yes, they did sometimes take prisoners - that way they could try to get info -- sometimes they took prisoners and then killed them, i.e., Malemade (sp?). Sometimes they just killed them.
That's true and "A Bridge Too Far" accurately depicts what happened at Arnhem. I've heard American soldiers from WW2 say that they did not always take prisoners. It probably depends on the situation. In general the Germans treated their western enemies better than they treated the Russians because the Russians did not sign the Geneva Convention and I believe did not observe it.
Just a thought, where do they pack their helmets? They're not on their backs!!!

These guys surrendered more than any other soldiers in history. Also its strange that they ran out of ammunition so often. GIs tended to carry 2X the ammunition German soldiers did.

Richard Basehart, the best face as a German SS officer. However, German uniform is incomplete, ie: Totenkopf should be lower in his hat, collar SS ranking should be shilver-lined. Again, however, its nice TV story, and impressive German SS well-expressed, even for me, a Japanese. I watched this movie in my youth, which drove me German-fan.
Enjoyed the series as a kid but now I have an easy time picking out all the mistakes these supposed soldiers make. Good for Hollywood, but they could be fatal in actual combat.
Love the series, but sometimes the stupidity of the guys ticks me off. He could have easily crawled away from the soccer game, but no ding dong had to stand up and run like a gazell!
