I have to admit, after watching your videos, this American desperately wants to experience "the cut". I like the non touristy way of traveling. This would be an amazing vacation.

@David of Yorkshire that and this is clearly their retirement. Slow and easy is what they want now after a busy life.
And even the hustle and bustle of daily American life, floating along down your canals does look like a nice little break from all the chaos.

We had the pleasure of meeting Bob and Jayne earlier today on our bit of the “Cut” We walk and run along the canal is just perfect so on our walk with the dog it just so happened Voyageur appeared next to us so we walked and talked. When Bob pulled over, we were invited aboard.

I have lived next to the tennessee river for 47 years. Grew up around the water and have worked on towboates for 23 years. I would love to live over there on a narrow boat. Thanks for all the great videos and hello from the 🇺🇸

As an American that is totally in love with the British Canal life, vicariously sadly, it is great to see those that can realize the dream of enjoying a narrowboat. I only stumbled upon this life researching American Waterways, for what is called in the US the Great Loop. Maybe someday the wife and I can make our dream come true.

As a former expat from the US who lived in London 2004-2007, I have always had the insatiable desire to move back to the UK. Whenever I can, I make a return visit on average once annually. I don't think I can ever rest easy until I get back there. I have talked to other Americans who have spent a good amount of time (and even short visits) in the UK and almost without exception, they all feel the same insatiable desire to return. I call it the London syndrome. One day, on a future return visit to the UK, I would love to get my first experience on a canal boat and see what it's like for myself. It's no surprise to me that people from overseas can potentially buy a canal boat. Whilst living in London, I attended a church whose congregation were largely foreign expats (many of whom were Americans in fact). One American lady in that church actually lived on a narrowboat. During my frequent walks all over London, I would often see those boats and wondered what they were for and what was inside them. Watching your videos really piques my interest. And yes, I still use British English pronunciations, spellings, expressions, etc. on occasion. Once a Londoner, always a Londoner.

I live on one of the oldest and still working industrial canals in the United States. Look up Bellows Falls, Vermont. Fascinating history and a very small village. Most houses are Victorians. Unfortunately, the taxes are killing everything that was good. But most of us at the historical society work very hard to keep stuff up to snuff.

Very nice video although I thought you let him get away a bit with his "can't get a bank account" answer. I would have liked a bit, just a bit, more detail there as to the specific hurdles they needed to cross. However, having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed the interview. Well done you. Good idea.

It is very simple. You need a bona fide UK address where you can evidence that you pay utility bills and have a track record of living there and paying bills. This is both an anti fraud and money laundering measure imposed on banks by the regulators. It is tough on the ordinary joe.

As someone who's been in America his whole life, and quite frankly never left his time zone (-6 GMT... although I have been all over this time zone) don't believe everything you see on TV. Yeah, we're dealing with a lot of issues right now, but from what my British friends tell me, not anymore than you guys are. I would say that these guys are representative of most Americans when it comes right down to it.

The States had hundreds of canals. It's to bad they were all covered up and placed in huge pipes. Well for the most part any way. Canals in the States were the biggest transport system before the railroad. There were canals in Boston, Baltimore, DC, PA, Va, And the list goes on.

I became fascinated by the British canals on my visits from the US to see members of my mom’s family. When dining at a pub at Barnwell, we watched someone going through the locks and I couldn’t look away. The daughter of Mom’s cousin lives with her son in a narrowboat on the Fens of East Midlands. Until I moved to the USA from the UK in 2000, I could never understand how Americans seemed so rich and able to afford things like a sail boat in the US and also a narrow boat in the UK. I found that the US tax is much lower, and everything is much cheaper, especially housing and cars. So on a regular job people can do some much more in the US than you could ever imagine doing in the UK. If you land a good job in the US, you really can rake the money in and be allowed to keep most of it.

Not to mention our housing, food, gas are all cheaper than Europeans. I'm not saying that having private health insurance is better I'm just saying it doesn't really make much difference in the scheme of it all

Hi David, We are from Seattle and bought our boat as a used hire boat. I do understand the issue with UK credit cards as opposed to US based credit cards. We have had a real issue with getting UK mobile phones and had to find a work around. When we top up now we have to actually go to a Three store to keep our phones working. We have been here only two months on a six month stay and haven't figured out the bank account work around yet. We are living on credit cards and cash at the moment. As for buying a narrowboat we found that to get what we wanted we had to grab one instantly as they sell withing 24 hours or less. You just put a down payment on the boat and the final payment is contingent on the marine survey. You have to have a survey or the risk is incredibly high. You can get a bad boat that actually looks good. As for transferring funds I was astounded by bank charges. They actually have hidden fees that have to do with exchange rates and they take what I thought were outrageous fees especially when one is dealing in large dollars and pounds. I investigated transferring money and found a way to transfer safely and easily for about one third of what the banks charge. Thank you for all your videos. You made our boat search so easy and clear.

Can you not go to a branch of a US bank in London and arrange something? Pay for cellphone credit online and pay by Paypal.

There’s an online service app called Transferwise, basically you can transfer money for an eight to a tenth of what a bank transfer international will cost you. They also do an international MasterCard so you can load dollars in and spend pounds with no fees ! Glad to see the younger generation resolving schemes by these old bankers. I’ve used them for two years and pay my sons college. I am looking at a narrow boat or a wider boat. I did penichete vacations in France which were excellent esp

This piece in particular was of intrigue to me living in New York State. I have through UK mates in Manchester fallen in love with these Narrow Boats. I hope to maybe spend bit of time on this wonderful mode of transport when I fly into Manchester late in this year. This was yet another fun piece to see. Thank you.

sir,you are very lucky to live in N.Y. Go to the Erie canal and rent one of the finest canal boats in the world.Midlakes navigation near Macedon,N.Y. will rent you a canal boat for you and your wife to tour on for a week or however long you want to go on the canal. We did it 4 times and every time was better that the last. The towns along the canal really want the visitors to have a good time .Hope you try it.It is alot cheaper that flying to England and using a really skinny boat.Midlakes boats are beautiful, well equiped, and you do not open and close the lock yourself. The lock master or bridge tender will take care of all those dutiesP.N.

@@hollyferguson7340 Thats part of the UK diy charm of canal life. Be really fun to see some old footage of when the canals were used for moving goods to market & a commercial necessity.
In the day I rode by daily an old disused lock of the Chenango Canal outside of Norwich NY. It was always fascinating to see the old tech for transporting goods. Heard the fall tours on the Erie are stunning.

Sometimes you have to be "bold." I searched and searched for an old 3/4 ton Suburban. I found a '97, in great condition, in Tennessee [I live in Arizona]. I bought it over the phone, and I'm glad I did! Maybe I'm just lucky, but the sale turned out well.

Being fairly new to narrowboating I'm continually delighted by how lovely narrowboat people are. The very best of humanity. Hope to see Bob and Jane on the cut sometime

What a lovely couple. May I say to all from around the world we are a friendly lot here in the UK even if there are a few wrong-uns. David. Binge watching the whole series from your first vlog, and enjoying it all again. It would be great to help you through the Hanwell Flight on the Grand Union, should you choose to come down to Brentford. All the best from a proud West Londoner and Hanwellian.
