you're way to tto charitable to oliver Anthony. The conservative bubble would not be pushing this song so much if there were not these tropes embedded in the song. When a white southern man is talking about people abusing welfare, it's generally about black people.
thee's the famous quoate from Republican strategist lee atwater, " You start out in 1954 by saying, “N..., n..., ni....” By 1968 you can’t say “n...”-that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “N..., n....”

Messed up part is Oliver Anthony didnt even mention a specific party and turned down millions when asked to show up at the Republican stuff. He also said he was frustrated the right wing took his music and played it not realizing the song was about all the politicians not just one side or the other. What he's pointing out, is the hypocritical nature of people who call you a 'conspiracy theorist' meaning to disparage you for speculating, as if speculation is not fair play, and then go on to counter your speculation with their own. It is quite absurdly hypocritical to do so, but some people of certain political or spiritual persuasions consider speculation and discussion, to be something that is reserved for those who are 'correct', in other words, *themselves*.

I actually think all workers whether blue or white collar are struggling now. Wages haven’t kept up with inflation across the board. It’s easy to look at “northerners” & think they’re wealthy. Yes, relatively speaking, in NYC we make like 3x as much as my family in FL. But they pay no state taxes. We pay state & city taxes, plus we pay >50% of our income to housing. So take home pay is remarkably similar regardless of region. FWIW, some trades (still considered “blue collar”) actually make more than certain physicians in NY. A master electrician or cabinetmaker here with their own business can easily out earn a hospitalist or psychiatrist who works for a hospital.

It feels like we're putting ourselves in an early grave to keep this country running. And while sure, people on wellfare arent to blame, it sucks seeing a 300lbs person using food stamps to buy twinkies at the store. It invokes a feelings of things being unfair, how come i bust my ass working 60 hours a week to barely cover food and rent. But your fat ass gets a free pass to be a lazy piece of shit. Obviously thats not the case the majority of the time, and those programs help people who need it. "it sucks seeing a 300lbs person using food stamps to buy Twinkies at the store. It invokes a feelings of things being unfair"
The US government directs the bulk of its food subsidies toward commodity crops like corn and soybeans. These are used to make cheap sugars, starches, and oils that end up in highly-processed junk foods. Junk food (yes - including Twinkies) is CHEAP and is the easiest type of food for low-income families to afford, and is the chief reason WHY poor people tend to be obese - they can't afford healthier foods bc they're more expensive. A box of Twinkies costs around $3, whereas something like organic granola bars or something with less processed sugar costs 2x that or more.
The notion that it's unfair for poor fat people using food stamps on cheap as dirt Twinkies is the most broke-brained perspective to have. Poor people buy what's cheap, junk food is heavily subsidized and amongst the cheapest food you can buy, and buying junk food is how people on food stamps can stretch their dollars the furthest.
If they used their food stamps on more expensive non-processed food, the same people complaining about them buying Twinkies would be mad they were using food stamps on higher quality/more expensive food, and if they can afford that then they shouldn't need food stamps at all, etc. There's no winning for the folks on food stamps when it comes to people that look for reasons to criticize them.

The welfare thing is also a bi product of backwards conservative values that make them vote against their own interests, because welfare isn't bankrupting anyone, it just helps the poor.

Today you might be welding pipe but tomorrow you might be getting cut two checks; deuce-deuce. For example, loads of conservatives are now disowning and questioning oliver because he said the song wasn't explicitly about Biden and that diversity is a good thing and that the US was a 'melting pot'. It's quite funny reading the comments.

He was not drawing a line between north and south (even tho I also view greater DC as the modern day north/ south line). And he never even mentioned right vs left or anything like that. He just said politicians in general are fucking Americans in general. The song is something almost everyone can relate to.

Fantano used to have a second channel called THATISTHEPLAN where he would upload random cheap skits, memes and his podcast He used to dunk on communists, sjws a lot, republicans too, but he was more open to mocking the more extreme leftist types, not that he really took a position himself. Then in 2017, a music outlet called TheFader put a hit piece out on him, mostly pointing at the fact Fantano did a podcast with Sam Hyde, and Sam had just had his adultswim show canceled if I remember correct. Sam made some pretty outlandish claims like "white people invented hiphop, black people need to pipe down" as he giggled. It being sam hyde you have no clue if he's serious, regardless fantano didn't really call him out on it. Basically they linked fantano as being aligned with the alt-right, which wasn't good for a white dude who reviews mostly hiphop and has made a successful career off it. He abruptly deleted that alt channel, claiming it was because it "didn't make him money" and immediately thereafter, the guy was just suffering from Trump derangement syndrome and signaling to the left like crazy.
He was never a conservative, he definitely wasn't alt-right, that really was a bullshit hitpiece on him, but it did put the fear in him. That's when I believe (in my opinion) he made this weird "woke" whatever you want to call it pivot. I remember a lot of kind of random but blue checkmark soundcloud type rappers (black dudes) saying F him when that article dropped, calling him a culture vulture.

In general, Fantano was closer to the edgy, quasi-alt-right side of the internet back then. He interviewed Sargon in a different episode of the same podcast, and I think he was in JonTron's general circle back when he started dropping race realist talking points.

    • @moneygrab610

Yep. Thatistheplan was an actually funny channel - a tamer (but still a bit edgy) version of that era of TH-cam. That Fader article activated a switch; though, I suppose it also could have just been the escalation of politics in those years too. Either way, he seemed to lose his sense of humor and join the trope of overtly-progressive music critic having had that association with Sam Hyde and edgier comedy. And unfortunately, you can see the political bias when analyzing the song when the first associations were confederate nostalgia and not the ongoing issues in the area that is the capital of the country.

How was it though? It's completely DISgust... it took Destiny 6 to 6 1/2 minutes to get to the point where Vaush actually criticised anything in the song, after 2/3 of the video was taken up by Hasan, Vaush said something which was a little stupid but surely was taken out of context? After which the fool glowed up and chuntered for about two minutes, there was some noise that both made which I didn't quite hear as spoken English, and after all that he played a Vaush video that had absolutely nothing WhatsoeveR to do with Oliver Anthony in particular. In conclusion, I don't think that this was in context and the guy has a target onback.

As a fellow former student of music, I would like to address your point at 22:40.
Country music has had and still does have a bunch of liberal country singers such as Johnny Cash, Taylor Swift, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, The Chicks, Kacey Musgraves, Steve Earle, and I'm only really naming the mainstream liberal country musicians that I know. Sure, there are a lot of conservative country musicians such as Hank Williams, Hank Williams Jr, Toby Keith, Kid Rock, Merle Haggard, Jason Aldean, and quite a few others that I don't know as well, but make no mistake. There are liberal country musicians too.
It's less that "there was a time when country music wasn't conservative", and more that "some country musicians are more liberal, and some are more conservative".

    • @brycestpeter
      @brycestpeter 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

She's more of an example of country pop crossover (like Kacey Musgraves). In my book, if an artist (like Taylor Swift) made a significant amount of country/folk music in their career (which she has considering albums like Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, Folklore, and Evermore), but later changed genres on later albums, I still count that artist as being a part of Country music history and therefore part of the genre. For instance, just because Willie Nelson made that jazz album in 1978 called Stardust, that doesn't mean he's now a 'jazz musician'. He's still based in Country music. Admittedly yah, since the 2010's, Taylor has undeniably gone more pop, but she has made country music, and may continue to make country music as she gets older.
