I went to Italy in March. We were in Milan, Rome, Sorrento, Lecce, and a couple of other places. I loved the parks, cathedrals, and all of the art I saw in the whole country.

I lived the last 6 months in Florence to study on a semester abroad. And although I really loved the country, the culture, the food and so on, I genuinely kinda have never felt to be really acknoledged as myself but reduced to "foreigner". And that although I spoke Italian and "looked" a bit Italian.
That being said, I have met a lot of great and helpful people, don't forget that. But it's just, if you talk to someone in Italy and they found out, that you're a foreigner, they were kinda overwhelmed. They started to speak English to me, raised their voice and talked, if I was a little bit retarded or didn't understand anything. Especially when I responded in Italian, the response was very confused. I really laughed, when you told about that in the video, because it is so true, especially with pricing.
I mean, of course, I'm still in the process of learning and perfectioning my Italian, and I still have struggles to understand Italians, when they are a bit agitated and speak really fast (which they tend to do a lot) But it's not helpful whatsoever, if the native speakers speak English to me.
Just a little side note: If you know someone, who doesn't speak you're language perfectly: Most of the time, we are still learning and try to improve. Speak a bit slower with your normal voice. Speaking louder and not in full sentences brings both to nowhere. And if you have the feeling, that we missed something, just try to explain it in another way.
However, sometimes, I kinda felt proud, whenever someone asked me, from which city I'm from. Just because my accent was a bit off. And most of the time, they were really surprised, if I told them, I was a foreigner, because they believed, I was just from another Italian city. That was a rare, but a really great experience.

When you move somewhere being an outsider is part of the experience. I find it incredible that someone would want to move somewhere then be afraid they might not be accepted. If they have that kind of fear, why even bother moving to an area where you think you might not be accepted. People need to ask themselves if THEY ARE WILLING TO INTEGRATE?
If you don't think that people are going to like you where ever you feel like moving to, don't expect a warm welcome and open arms, it isn't likely to happen, but you can have pleasant surprises most especially on how you act, and if you're willing to integrate!

I've lived in different areas of Rome and some are different than the others. I lived in Battistini which is heavily residential and even borderline poverty. I lived in at Arco di Travertino and here the flavor is "common Roman living". At least that was my take. I am now in Trastevere which is common and also a bit of money here although you have the tourist zone which is near the river and the other half along viale Trastevere which caters to local residents and American college students. There are some fantastic houses between monteverde and Trastevere!

I've lived in Rome for 4 years and I just ate a tavern near where I live for the first time. It's called Il Duca. Simple but good quality food and you know it's good as you dont have two key things: waiters who greet you on the street to get you inside and pictures of the food. In fact when you walk in, the actual food is on display !

First of all, as always, another great video with great perspective. Thank you!
Secondly, I've had 20 great experiences in Italy for every bad experience. My Italian is cosi-cosi. I will relate the 3 bad experiences. As I'm the one who who speaks the best Italian of our group, I always order, and I had a gelato vendor in Venice totally make fun of me and not in a good way. Secondly, My niece was overcharged $20 Euros by a storekeeper at a sporting goods store in a small German speaking town in northern Italy. He smiled at us, knowing we couldn't articulate that he was a thief. Finally, we had 2 young females, in the same German speaking town repeat everything we said in Italian back to us in German. They were very rude and mean spirited. But, most people in Italy are very nice. More than once, when we were in the alps, the restaurant owner would come to our table and talk at length. to us. Also, I've had awesome luck with the people at the hotels I've stayed at.
My point is, you are going to encounter some jerks wherever you go, even in your home country. Don't let people ruin your good time. Treat everyone with respect and you will be amazed at how many random people will go out of there way to be kind to you, just because they're good people.

Some believe there are no accidents. You started off this video with a question from a Muslim viewer. I first visited Rome, Italy in around 2002. I am Gay. At that time, Rome is the center of the Catholic Church, I was hesitant to visit. Are they going to stone me in street like a couple of other countries? Still I wanted to see Colosseo. I was born Roman Catholic. I still am. I wanted to see all the Rome had to offer. Let me say, if there ever was a 180 in perception. For me it is Rome, Italy. No, I wasn't dressed in stereotypes,, I learned a few Italian words, and back then I did research as to what would be disrespectful. I am fortunate to have traveled to all the places I did. Rome, Italy is the place that touched my heart the most. Many Nuns smiled and winked at me with love in their eyes. No, I don't expect a red carpet or for Italy to reorganize because I am visiting. I don't see how I could have been treated better. I returned to Rome a few years ago, Of course, I threw a penny in the Trevi fountain, I had to return to Rome for my wish to come true. My Mother had recently passed. A woman, with family, I was not secret at a restaurant. Her Son was nice to me. I said. I wish you were my Mom. No offense was taken. I remember to this day she said to me: "Are you finished with Rome?'

As I said in another comment I left under another video I am actually interested in knowing the reasons why you left Alto Adige. I am in love with the region I would love to move there so that I can learn German. I only know the area from a tourist perspective, so I am afraid it could be difficult to live there even as an Italian (I know renting is quite expensive for instance and many actually refuse to speak Italian).

I enjoyed the video. All good and true points. I have apologized for Americans in other countries many times. On one of my trips to Rome, I was showing a friend, this was their first time in Rome, the colosseum . I was standing next to an American. The man loudly stated quite loudly to his female companion that the colosseum “was so old” not in a good way. He complained it was not “modernized.” What? I just stared at him as others did as well.
