I bought one just because it seems like it would be a fantastic complement to my mostly digital and sample-based eurorack setup. The combination of the 1010 BitBox and the Elektron sequencer alone just presents so many tantalizing possibilities.
@@trillbill7533 most things analog can do can be done on subtractive synths. Digital is where the new, unheard noises lie. Most of the analog sound characteristics comes from filters anyway.

...and yeah... I love it. Ricky, You showed me few examples why I want to dive in that piece of hardware. It doesn't mean that I still want/need/have to to get Analog Rhytm Mk2 this year. I don't know yet what are the differences between those two but surely Elektron knew what they doing for the artists groups. To have, to know, and use more that one piece of hardware is always a form of a level.
You might have been waiting years for this, but I'm waiting for a mono machine in the takt form factor. Can you imagine?! A monotakt, all the machines from it, perhaps a couple machinedrum machines. I'd find 999 dollars really quick.
I've never been a fan of the Elektron workflow. I'm dawless but I use Deluge and Circuit Tracks for sequencing and sample playback. However, if they ever produce a Octatrack mk III with extra external inputs and update the FX processing, I'd buy one and learn how to use it. But I can see how for some, this product fits a specific niche.
What exactly is “the elektron workflow” to you? Step sequencing? Because their devices are very flexible and can be used in a variety of ways. I only own a machinedrum right now but lately I have been using it as a midi controller for my evolver more than as a drum machine.
What you just described is an MPC with USB compliant audio and the new filters being added 23 June 2022. It even costs less and works with more channels, has a color screen… Anyway, just pointing something out. Pick what works best for you.
MC-707 and a few of the other Roland products also output their individual channels like the Syntakt. No analogue synth circuits built in, though. The drum engine synthesizes drumkits if desired, but the result is always rather clean, unlike the Electribe 2 which can get dirtier and more interesting.
Working with elektrons synth machines inside this,Rytm, and machinedrum always feels kind of weak. Digitakt with some top notch samples seems to go further
This is true! Rytm has analog synthesised drums and samples with overbridge. He mentions the fx track is also new but the A4 has an fx track in the same way… ya?
Only thing I can say is Syntakt has digital drums which the AR doesn't have. It also has 12 independent tracks where the AR technically only has 8 independent tracks because of the inbuilt mute groups. The AR does do a lot that ST does though. Probably worth it to just buy the Rythm in some cases. Or buy 2 M:Cycles and save a TON of money 🤣.
@@koalemos1679 you get only 8 voices in stead of 12, but really you get 12 instead of 14, as syntakt have two mono inputs, while AR get 4! And man how useful they are, when coupled with external bass and synth machines you deliver through stereo jack output fully mixed and sidechained (I love compressor from AR) audio to FOH. Yesterday I played show with Elektron AR + Moog Sub37 (I was a part of collective responsible for rhythm section) and it was amazing! :D
Lol! I originally bought the Digitakt but, what I was really looking for was for a modern Machinedrum. In that regard, the Syntakt delivers and then some! So happy I switched! :D
Thank you for your excellent content. I am an MPC user but have found it a bit sterile because I'm not a big sample diver. I was going to get a Digitone to pair with my MPC One to see where that took me, but maybe the Syntakt is the answer... So many questions!!
You guys are going down the alley I want to go. Since it’s been out for a while I’m thinking about getting one to pair it to my MPC. I’m just hoping the workflow isn’t too complicated. Ricky makes it all look so easy
I recently picked up a Digitone Keys and love it (my first Elektron box). I also just got an MPC One which I'm new to. I'm renting a Syntakt at the moment (I know, too much gear!), and it's fun, but I think that a Digitakt would go better with the DK and MPC One than a Syntakt would. I suppose that the MPC One is great with samples, so I don't need a Syntakt or a Digitakt - too much GAS, man! @Doctor 808 - if I had an MPC and was picking up an Elektron box, it'd be a tough call between the Digitone and the Syntakt. The sound design on the Digitone is deeper than the Syntakt for sure (4 synth pages on DN vs 1 synth page on ST). The extra tracks and fx track on the ST are really handy.. Did you find any answers to your questions? :)
Have had model cycles and samples for some time ,love them both. I have the octatrack mk2 as well making some progress on that but man it's a hate love relationship. I'm a trucker and ordered all the e25 versions. Digitone, Digitakt, and the Syntakt. They are at the house awaiting me. Can't wait to get my hands on them.
I don't get the confusion and complaints about it not playing samples. If you want that, save yourself some money and get a Digitakt! I love the sounds you can make with it, it finally gives me the controls I always missed on the Model:Cycles. Also as you show, the chords are so much more useful on this than the M:C!
I'm with you on that. No idea why people don't look at a product for what it is, not what it is not. This box looks amazing. I've had a few Elektron boxes in the past, and this one sums up everything I would want if I was to get another one :)
@@darakilicoglu Yes, but my point was that this is a drum synthesizer, not a sampler. I'm not saying samplers don't have their place; all I'm saying is that this is not a sampler.
It's specialized and it seems great at what it does. But wanting a groovebox with a synth engine ánd a sample engine isn't that crazy. There are options out there that do both and with Elektron you will need a Digitakt ánd a Syntakt and that's an incredibly pricy solution if you ask me. If this could júst play samples from an SD card, it doesn't have to sample, and they'd give you a simple amp envelope and a filter to process them it would be a much more complete package in my opinion. And especially at that pricepoint I would want a do-everything-groovebox.
Thanks! Great video as always! 👍🏼 It made me realise that I need to sell my syntakt and buy something else. I bought the syntakt on day one without much research. I Really thought it would be more synth-focused, and that the analog machines would be more like analog four. I’ve really tried to love it but to me it just feels like a cycles which I never liked either. And as you said about the chord-engine, it just sounds dull.
1:49 The funny thing is, there's a whole 808 kit in the presets, but no 909... 😂 Also your sponsored code in the description currently shows as (), thought I'd point that out.
Some people claim that recording one track at a time via the analog outs sounds better than recording via Overbridge. I have not experimented to see if I agree, but am wondering if there is any merit to those claims, or is Overbridge sound quality just as good. Although, I don't think you can capture the effects via Overbridge??
You can capture efx via overbridge but it would be for all tracks being sent to the buss. I personally haven’t noticed a difference in sound quality between the two recording techniques.
I'm curious why you say you've been waiting forever for an analog drum machine with Overbridge when the Analog Rytm has existed for years. This seems like it rounds out the Elektron midrange (Digi) line, but if you already have an ARMK2, I don't really see why you would need this.
He doesnt need it, this is his job to demo and promote various products on youtube..it doesnt matter what comes out, his job is to push it by making the same old house track a million times over :/ like groundhog dayy
My syntakt is coming tomorrow I don't need it. I definitely have GAS bcus I just brought a MC707 to pair with TR8S and sp404mk2 I jus Goin with my Gut. (GAS) The Syntakt had me at Day one. I tried to fight it. But since I Opted out from the DT I've been super curious about the sequencer workflow and sound. I imagine myself plugging into a PA at a Dive Bar and unleashing da Beast on the unsuspecting patrons. I want them to be in Awe as I crank out ENORMOUS EDM and House sound from the Lil Box into this 70s/80 Rock/Cover band Hole in DA Wall. I want ANARCHY!!!! And then.... We...shall have Peace.
Great video. Just sold my Rtym mk2 , it just was not for me. However watching this, I can see this fitting in my set up in a much more finite way. Strange but true.
I like the idea of the Syntakt. I had a Digitakt, and while I like the workflow, I'm not a sample kind of guy. I found myself using the drum synth of my Akai Force over the Digitakt, and decided to sell it (with the global price hike, I almost got back what I paid new a few years ago...). I'd get a Syntakt if it wasn't that expensive... In the meantime, Force drumsynth it is :)
Why on earth would give up the conveniences of a DAW on a 4K screen to go button-nerd on a device like this? It seems like you need 10x the time to create something which sounds like nothing so unique that you need a device like this to create it. Please explain ❤
IMO a groovebox makes creating something much faster. And it's more enjoyable, there's less risk of software issues or random bugs and crashes, there's more hands-on control. Most are more performance oriented... There are plenty of reasons. Sure a DAW can do more if you have enough vst's, but it's harder to learn, takes forever to set up and IMO it's less enjoyable. Also before you have a good selection of vst instruments you're spending quite a bit of money too. If a groovebox can do 95% of what you want and it inspires you more to create music or it's just more enjoyable, isn't that a good reason to go for that?
Honestly drum synthesis is so fun I'd probably prefer this to my digitakt. The most enjoyable sound design for me is synthesized drums and so far I haven't found a drum synth, hardware or software, that is excellent. There are some good ones, unfortunately a lot less options than standard synths (I do use standard synths to make drums all the time), but I don't think I've ever used a drumsynth that was truly great. Haven't tried anything from elektron tho, so I'm very interested.
My problem with the elektron stuff is that the drums just don’t sound great. Like even in my octatrqck with really solid samples, they just come through the other side not nearly as fat as the mpc. And I especially feel that way about the model cycles, like the engine doesn’t produce very usable kick, snare and hihat sounds. Idk my experience
overbridge is cool in theory but i never found myself wanting to control anything really in daw and it's not that hard to synch other drum machines over midi that also have multiple outs. Even more flexibility with modular for example. still i'm interested in this box just idk if i'm sold on the sound and might just get Octatrack and samples
IMO, if you're not sure if you want a Syntakt, IMO buy one secondhand. If you don't end up liking it, you can sell it for pretty much what you paid for it. What is there to lose?
I don't get it; you have been waiting for this workflow for years, but digitone, elektron 4 and rytm have offered pretty much this workflow for a long time. I came here looking if there was anything the ST could do, that I could not do with my DN+A4 combo, but I don't see it. Considering a used DN+A4 are cheaper than ST and a *lot* more versatile, why would anybody get an ST?
i home Roland makes an interface like the TR8S for the MC707, the only thing that i like better about elektron boxes is overbridge. but i still love my OT!
I love Overbridge. I hook up the gear on the desktop, and most of the time I just remote connect to the desktop from my laptop via Parsec, and I have full control of my Digitone and Syntakt from anywhere in the house or backyard. Very little latency even.
Why do people complain that it doesnt have sampling-capabilities? It makes no sense.. it's not a sampler... when I buy a piano I dont complain that I cant play guitar on it...
I do. that's why I buy electronic and not grand pianos.

Just bought the syntakt, after using the digitone allot and loving it. not sure if I should have bought the digitakt instead.. tbd
Max Dopeness. Your music inspires me to pull my tech house project out of stasis.
Gave me a few ideas after owning mine for a month - you can slow that second synth down with page specific speed controls as well. Great times.
I've never been a fan of the Elektron workflow. I'm dawless but I use Deluge and Circuit Tracks for sequencing and sample playback. However, if they ever produce a Octatrack mk III with extra external inputs and update the FX processing, I'd buy one and learn how to use it. But I can see how for some, this product fits a specific niche.
dAwLeSs brah
What exactly is “the elektron workflow” to you? Step sequencing? Because their devices are very flexible and can be used in a variety of ways.
I only own a machinedrum right now but lately I have been using it as a midi controller for my evolver more than as a drum machine.
What you just described is an MPC with USB compliant audio and the new filters being added 23 June 2022. It even costs less and works with more channels, has a color screen… Anyway, just pointing something out. Pick what works best for you.
all the people involved with the ot left elektron so it seems unlikely that they'd release a third iteration
@@llax222 it needs a major revision to use Overbridge and new OLED screen. Still fantastic box though.
MC-707 and a few of the other Roland products also output their individual channels like the Syntakt. No analogue synth circuits built in, though. The drum engine synthesizes drumkits if desired, but the result is always rather clean, unlike the Electribe 2 which can get dirtier and more interesting.
OTOH if you want thousands of classic Roland gear sounds like 808, 909, Juno it’s a nice box to have to complement other gear…
Working with elektrons synth machines inside this,Rytm, and machinedrum always feels kind of weak. Digitakt with some top notch samples seems to go further
I want this the digi, the tone keys, and analog keys for sound design and jamming. These are my dream instruments
Monomachine has dedicated tracks for effects that can be sequenced like any other machine
It do Pad Chord, but it dont work in a way I expected. Better have a poly mode for chord design than chord memory thing.
Hi, why does the Rhythm Mk2 does not provide what you wanted a long time ? It has synthesized drums and Overbridge.
Came here to ask the same thing, I have an MKI and it seems it has everything he wanted already.
You can't fool us, Ricky. It was GAS.
This is true! Rytm has analog synthesised drums and samples with overbridge. He mentions the fx track is also new but the A4 has an fx track in the same way… ya?
right, it samples, it puts samples under the machines, its digitakt + syntakt with velocity sensitive pads... I dont get it..
Syntakt + MPC One is a combination I’ve been pondering. Have you happened to pick up a Syntakt yet?
People want every device to have every feature… same reason why your car isn’t also a boat.
@@eagereyes exactly. Elektron has other devices that do samples.
Idk if I understand you correctly about FX page and placing triggers, but on rytm you can place trigs and automate stuff on a separate track
Can you do a longer video on Syntakt house sound design?
1:49 The funny thing is, there's a whole 808 kit in the presets, but no 909... 😂
Also your sponsored code in the description currently shows as (), thought I'd point that out.
We need that scale mode for the digitakt and digitone!
Oh my goodness, that would be amazing
Some people claim that recording one track at a time via the analog outs sounds better than recording via Overbridge. I have not experimented to see if I agree, but am wondering if there is any merit to those claims, or is Overbridge sound quality just as good. Although, I don't think you can capture the effects via Overbridge??
You can capture efx via overbridge but it would be for all tracks being sent to the buss.
I personally haven’t noticed a difference in sound quality between the two recording techniques.
That looks and sounds really good to me. I'll go and get one. Thanks for the little introduction!
It does seem a tad expensive for a Groovebox though I’ve not dipped my toe into the Elektron workflow yet, perhaps that alone justifies the price?
really nice machine, am really looking forward to seeing what future updates bring
@@devondetroit2529 he literally works for Novation, he’s not pushing elektron.
LITERALLY
My syntakt is coming tomorrow
I don't need it.
I definitely have GAS bcus I just brought a MC707 to pair with TR8S and sp404mk2
I jus Goin with my Gut.
(GAS)
The Syntakt had me at Day one.
Huge Cycles fan, can't wait to get this. 👏
I must say those hi hat modulations sounded really funky.
I see this as a potential companion to my MPC One for live work.
This syntakt and MPC one or Akai force heheh powerful
but its monophonic right.. so more of a live session device right?
Great video. Just sold my Rtym mk2 , it just was not for me. However watching this, I can see this fitting in my set up in a much more finite way. Strange but true.
still doubting to buy one... i really love elektron, Digitone is great.. user interface super! Syntakt is on my wishlist...
Can Overbridge record individual tracks from Elektron devices?
I keep learning a lot from every thing you publish; thanks !!!
Ricky you made an absolute banger on this thing I think electron owe you some comission 🤣
I was waiting for this review
Thanks Ricky
I like the idea of the Syntakt.
I had a Digitakt, and while I like the workflow, I'm not a sample kind of guy. I found myself using the drum synth of my Akai Force over the Digitakt, and decided to sell it (with the global price hike, I almost got back what I paid new a few years ago...).
I'd get a Syntakt if it wasn't that expensive... In the meantime, Force drumsynth it is :)
If you already got a Force, everything else is a downgrade. Force is the top of the game.
I like the mpc wotkflow and the drum synth on the Live is pretty nice
@@bryantwalley force is awesome
@@pierrefitch 👍
Dude, what are we doing here? I am trying not to trigger GAS, but your f'ing my ish up!
pair this thing with a sampler and a synth or two and you've got a nice little setup.
@@OttosTheName yes, thank you
Honestly drum synthesis is so fun I'd probably prefer this to my digitakt.
Check out Erica synths lxr02, sounds great and the drum synthesis is crazy
The DFAM is a very fun drumsynth, that's also great to play as a bass synth :)
It's funny how we all kind of search for the same sound. The kick is just how I like it, perfect 👌💯
Idk my experience
i would disagree on the model cycles, the kick and hat sounds are pretty sick imo. i agree with the snare engine
To me the cycles is a kick machine, I absolutely love the kick engine. I would keep it for that alone
overbridge is cool in theory but i never found myself wanting to control anything really in daw and it's not that hard to synch other drum machines over midi that also have multiple outs. Even more flexibility with modular for example. still i'm interested in this box just idk if i'm sold on the sound and might just get Octatrack and samples
I'm trying to find out what idk stands for but everyone i ask just says i don't know ?
IMO, if you're not sure if you want a Syntakt, IMO buy one secondhand. If you don't end up liking it, you can sell it for pretty much what you paid for it. What is there to lose?
I agree! It was exactly what I was wanting too :)
I guess this confirms Cycles won't be getting any more features.
elektron should refund you bc this slaps and it's the first video that made me actually want the syntakt
Re the overbridge / audio over USB. What is it that this does, that the Digitakt can't?
cool man! looking on you it looks so easy and quick, but doing it by myself took me along more time :))) waiting for my syntakt
the golf clap preset is definitely the best one on the cycles haha
Great stuff. Love it. Thank you for posting
I don't get it; you have been waiting for this workflow for years, but digitone, elektron 4 and rytm have offered pretty much this workflow for a long time. I came here looking if there was anything the ST could do, that I could not do with my DN+A4 combo, but I don't see it. Considering a used DN+A4 are cheaper than ST and a *lot* more versatile, why would anybody get an ST?
can the A4 do drums?
@@RababaInc Yes! Better than the AR incidentally..
i home Roland makes an interface like the TR8S for the MC707, the only thing that i like better about elektron boxes is overbridge. but i still love my OT!
can we get a Model:Analog ? that's all i want...
this thing with sampling and compression would be a dream, but like this? nah thx.. rytm all the way..
TH-camrs be telling me not to buy gear while they play with new gear
Do you think it is a good match with novation circuit? Especially for some housy stuff ... :)
Dope!
Nice Ricky! Keep them coming.!!!! 👍
I love Overbridge. I hook up the gear on the desktop, and most of the time I just remote connect to the desktop from my laptop via Parsec, and I have full control of my Digitone and Syntakt from anywhere in the house or backyard. Very little latency even.
How many voices on the midi tracks?
Great review linke always. Were do you connect the wireless headphones to?
Damn my syntakt comes in tomorrow. This is like exactly what ima do with it
