Hey man, good video! I am a county patrolman surrounding a large city.
I have a very similar kit in my charger stored in the “first line” of my trunk. Mine contains rifle, PC, helmet, and gas mask.
Anyone who tells you this isn’t necessary is a fool in my opinion. Any cop who knows what their doing and goes to an active shooting is going to sling and rack their patrol rifle.
If you have your stuff set up correctly and train with it, the amount of extra time it will take to don the PC, helmet, get that gas mask on ur belt is negligible vs just slinging and racking a rifle.
Why would you not want every force multiplier you can have if your running into the gunfight of your life?
Ignore the fudds. It’s all about mindset and training! Keep up the good content!

    Thoughts
    1. Lol. Shears, absolutely. I got some on my duty belt. Use them all the time. All the time.
    2. Way to bulky and to many pouches. Half the shit he said he's not using. Why make the video with it on there then.
    3. Hate running any pouches above ur holster because it fucks with ur draw stroke. And it changes it. Between running vest to no vest.
    4. Not a big fan of ifak on ur back. If ur injured bad ur on ur back and it's hard to get to. Or u may be fucked up and can't articulate ur arms to reach it. Put it on ur front or side where u can reach it with eather hand.
I i tend to like ur videos. But I think this one is a bit of a fail. I know swat operators and teir 1 guys who run more stream line then that. U can see he only has 1 year on the job and not much experience with active killer Training (hate saying shooter, because they don't always have a gun).
In the end a patrol responce vest needs to be very streamlined with what u need to go direct to threat. Obviously mission dictates gear and if ur in an area where ur back up is 30-40 mins away that's different. But for a vast majority in active shooter situation ur going to have a shit ton of officers form every dept in a 20mile radius withing 10 mins or so. Ur gear should be streamline to allow u to go direct to threat as fast and easly as possible

Main thing I learned is the state of Illinois actively endangers the hearing of someone responding to a shooting, or endangers potential victims by making them take a moment to insert hearing protection. All because the state wants a monopoly on violence and they decided a tube that makes your gun a little quiet is far too dangerous for the peons to own.

I like that everything is done with purpose here, and that you're constantly improving and figuring it out. Good balance here.
On the other hand you have officers that reject any kind of aftermarket investment into their gear and on the other extreme, some get all kitted but they come out with zero mobility and look ridiculous.
How do you like the Axl shoulder pads? Gets in the way of shouldering the stock?

  • @Riname-K

If you or really anyone in the comment section are looking for plates I would recommend you stick to the big three manufacturers in the US: LTC, Highcom, and Tencate (now called Integris).
All three have very good track record producing body armor since the 90s for multiple DoD and government and law enforcement contracts.
For something comparable to the Shotstop GT2, I would look at the Tencate CR2000. Their CR6450 is more capable if you have the extra bills to throw especially for API-BZ M855A1. Personally I would want something that can still stop 308 though, and these thin plates won't cut it.
Stay away from greasy snake oil marketing. Dayton Armor, Redemption Tactical, RTS, Bulldog, so on and so forth. Stick with the aforementioned "big three".

I disagree with having comms and a cummerbund type vest. I have my vest on the front passenger seat and it's just front and back plates with buckle straps. Remember this vest is IN ADDITION to what I'm already carrying. I already have a flashlight and radio on my belt. I'm not going to double up. Also I'm not looking to carry multiple flex cuffs. This is an active shooter vest, NOT a protest/riot vest. I have 4 rifle mags, 1 extended pistol mag, tourniquet and trama kit and knife. NOTHING else. Speed and weight are my main concerns.

This seems like a lot of stuff to be lugging around if you're not swat or some other type of direct action guy. Also in the case of an active shooter your priority should be engaging the threat as quickly as possible, no? If you really wanted to have armor, a slick carrier with ICW plates in it over your patrol vest and/or a helmet would probably be more realistic. Just stick a spare rifle mag in a pocket and you're GTG.

There have been enough of shootouts where significantly more than 4 rounds from a single patrol rifle was fired to justify carrying multiple magazines without making the kit overweight and displacing other necessary equipment.
Having fewer rounds or magazines is poor general preparation for anything especially if your job/mission is to protect civilians and put a stop any harm whether it's a single individual or multiple. Domestic, terrorism, invasion, you name it.

You’re a cop, so you already have some body armor on or is this for your POV when you happen by a shooting in progress??
For on duty you have to doff your soft armor to don this?
While Doing that how many kids are being shot? If donning over top.. ok while your feeling safe and snuggly kids are in terror and maybe being murdered? Risk vs reward priorities.
Also basic upgrade to in ear comms or link up to earpro .

    Thank You for the video.
Not sure how much sense this makes for a patrol officer.
So you are doffing your external carrier and donning your PC, and transferring over critical items that you do not have spare to leave on your PC (BWC, taser, radio). If you have time for that, then great. But you have to have time, and a staging location that you can do this at, etc.
An alternative is to invest in plates that you can wear full time in your EVC. Not everyone can do that, and those types of plates are more expensive, but for a patrol LEO, that is what I have been doing for years now (I'm using Safariland Oregon City carrier with Safariland Hardwire L3A and Tyr HA3/7 IC plates). It's doable.
From a cost perspective, you're gonna buy plates anyway. The money you save on not buying the rest of the redundant items (PC and stuff attached to it) would enable you to spend more $ to get premium plates. Bonus is that you would have plates full time.
And I'm not wasting time when I have to go to that hot call, bc I just grab my rifle and helmet (Ops Core AMPs attached) and go. No time wasted.
    It's a way.
Regarding plates, contact Mike at AT Armor, or Esstac. They are 2 good sources for quality plates.
You do need to ensure that the plates will fit the plate pockets of the carrier, and also that the package of plates and SBA will provide the desired protection. Mixing and matching like I did is not what I would recommend, but I think I'll be more than OK, as the SBA I'm using is superior to what Tyr was speccing at the time for these plates.

Simple conclusion after talking to a lot of local LEO is look as least “tactical” as possible and have a way to establish coms ASAP. For me this mean no plate carrier, a high vis vest, earbuds and phone contact to identify myself. “Kit” is a vertx bag with a plate worn on my chest, a foldy boi that gets carried in the bag as well as radio/PTT with local stations programmed. Bag also has a plethora of extra med and a couple mags in Velcro pouches front and center of the main compartment.

I would have really appreciated more exploration on the topic as a whole rather than a kit shakedown. Everyone’s carriers or more or less the same. What would have been cool is a discussion of statistics and the things you’re most likely going to have to deal with during a situation like that.
How civilians should interact and behave around law enforcement, discussions the pros and cons of civilians being on the X with armor on, and general safety considerations. Maybe even showing comparisons of how it turned out when people actually showed up and scene, and what worked and what didn’t.

This is purely a video about gear selection and setup, from the perspective of a patrol officer. The nuances of civilians responding to active shooter situations and the proceeding interaction with law enforcement is a completely different topic.

Context matters though especially considering the addition of a rigid hard plate along with a full wrap IIIA around the body, and hopefully the plate is thin too.

Seems like a nice setup, but I would opt for a lightweight setup. I’d say minimum 3 rifle mags, tourniquet and a ifak. Keep it simple and you can always add more. Realistically you want to go in and stop the threat. Odds are you won’t need all your mags and if you shoot all of them you’ll need to do some explaining. Ifak is for you if you get shot stopping the threat. Once the threat or threats are down, FD can come in and start treating people.
Ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain. Play with it and add or remove stuff as you see fit.

I doubt that pounds will equal pain for operations that will last such a short duration.
I wear upwards of 70lbs of turnout gear and SCBA while on the fireground doing more physically exerting tasks (that’s not a diss btw, y’all are in much more danger obviously) for up to 2hrs maybe even longer. Even with that stressor the “pounds equal pain” mantra does not particularly apply here. That comes from ruck marching and backpacking (which I am also a hobbyist of) and even then I tend to run what some people consider to be “heavier” packs. I’m not the fittest dude out there either, pretty average.

Recently watched a video where Kyle Morgan said the people in the active shooter situation don’t have armor. Every second counts. If I’m working LE patrol and wearing my soft armor carrier that’s what I’m going in with. If I’m working task force and wearing my plate carrier that’s what I’m going in with. If I’m off duty I’m going in with no armor. If I die I die, but I’m not taking precious seconds to protect myself when people are dying. I’m not saying I’m right and everyone else is wrong. This is A way not THE way.

What kind of plate carrier is good for keeping parents at bay outside of the school during an active shooting? One that doesnt prevent an officer from pumping hand sanitizer preferably. And room for a Punisher patch? Those parents can get pretty rowdy when their kids are being shot so protection for the officers not stopping the shooter is essential. Thin Blue Line.
