  • Houdini 18.5 is out and one of the new more exciting features is the new mask by feature node. Today we go over how to scatter points using the mask by feature node and show off how to use point fields to drive the mask.

Yesss, you saved me. I was super confused why my mask wasn't showing up in my viewport. Thanks for the tips!

Hi, how would you use this as a mask for other things such as deleting the faces within the mask?

You could create a group out the mask a few different ways and then blast the group away. Alternatively I've seen something about using attributes directly in the group part of a node but havent tried it myself to see if it works. So you would type something like "@mask > .5" into the group of a blast node. Like I said haven't tried that to see if it works though. Also if you don't need to model further with it and just want to have that part of the geo not seen you can use attributes in your renderers to drive things like opacity. I have videos on how to do that with Redshift.

would be nicer to show multiples use of the node rather than just scattering.. theres gotta be more use to it than just a basic scatter

There absolutely are more uses than just scattering but thats probably going to be one of the most typical uses for it. You could also use it drive blending between materials in renderers like redshift which I do have a video on how to use masks for that
