I think Matt's regeneration worked..especially since Ten's was so emotional and slow, I think we were all expecting this big elongated regeneration but them BAM! The shock value worked and stopped my tears and made me laugh.
Well he still took long enough to get there, I think they overdo the farewells, endless speeches and casting calls of previous companions is unncecessary.
i was really sad that Matt left but it helped a lot when Matt made the Phone call to clara in the first episode of s 8. and when the doctor said things to clara i felt it too. it really helped. Capaldi said that "was that the doctor?" and clara said "you shouldnt have listened the Phone call" and Capaldi said "but it was me who called you". guys i suggest to watch it.

Just a shocked face, almost like "...wow". And the last shot we see of Matt is that cheeky smile. How could that be a bad thing?
Totally agree! The rushed regeneration didn't leave me time to mourn (though I really appreciated and loved Matt) and the next moment, I was thinking, "Uh, wow, wait, he can't fly the tardis?" I thought that it was also a good intro to Peter.
I'm sad to say that I would much have preferred the crescendo that we have come to expect from the regeneration. In a way I find its a homage to the doctor, rather than being snuffed out in the blink of an eye. Each to their own I guess.

I've just thought of something. With The Doctor spending about a thousand years and growing old on Trenzalore it gives Matt an opportunity to return for future anniversary specials. That's the trouble with having the surviving classic Doctors making an appearance on the 50th; they no longer look like they did when they played the role (especially Colin Baker, bless him). I suppose you could use the timelines thing that they did in _Timecrash_, but it's a bit thin. However, when they come to the 75th anniversary, or even the 100th, if Matt is still around it wouldn't matter that he was old and grey because his Doctor could come into the story from when he was on Trenzalore.
Hes stuck on trenzalor while he aged. He didnt get to leave and have other adventures remember? As much as I love that idea it wouldnt work unfortunately :/
8:15 It was really nice of Steven to give Matt a hug and let him cry. Matt Smith is many people's Doctor, but he was Steven's first in charge. It was a new job, and experience, for both of them; and you could tell they helped each other. They were, and probably still are, good friends.
To me the regeneration was perfect. There was an IMMENSE build up, and I'm just talking about the scene when we THOUGHT he had regenerated. When Clara went back to the TARDIS and the camera showed all the clothes piled around and the fish fingers and custard (which personally I never thought we would we again), it kept breaking me. Then when it was finally time, he pulled off that bowtie, and the speech was amazing. And that one split second regeneration to me was Moffat's way of ripping off the bandage. We were just as shocked as Clara at the precise moment. And to me that was good for us.
David did a great job and I was very sad to see him go. But Matt just nailed it. There is just something about him and the way he portrayed the Doctor.
I wish Matt and Jenna did one more season together. Their characters had great chemistry and it would have been interesting to see how their relationship would have developed. God, I miss Matt Smith/11.
I'm gonna miss Matt Smith for his role as The Doctor. The way he went didn't exactly have me in tears, but I did shed a tear during that cameo at the end. The regeneration may have been rushed in some peoples eyes but I think it was perfect. After all, the way he went out with a bang and then came in so suddenly as Capaldi was awesome, and it got me immediately in the mood for the new doctor, who might I say, was funny from the very first line. Steven wasn't kidding when he said he'd change the show forever. Can't wait to see where it goes from here.
I sorta wish that they kept Matt for another year because him and Clara didn't have all that much time together. His and Jenna's chemistry together is better than the relationship with the Doctor and any other companion. Still, cant wait to see what Peter will bring to the table.
9 and Billie, had a great connection but 10 and Billie as well, 10 and Donna too, then Amy met 11 and it was just perfect! I loved them together! Jenna didn't have a lot of time with 11 but probably will be really good with 12 :)

After the 50th I finally respected The Eleventh Doctor and hearing Moffat confess this really allows me to end my mourning for The Tenth Doctor!
Rikumatrix155 Moffat hit the nail on the head. It wasn't so much missing Tennant but they changed up EVERYTHING and hearing him finally "apoligising" allows me to forgive him and move on!
Well that's because Tom Baker was one of the best Doctors (not the best just one of the best). I love Matt Smith but he isn't my Doctor (I grew up with Tom Baker because my parents were whovians). I cried when he regenerated but I am ready to see what someone new can do.
I would love for him to come back but as the poem states, 'Eleventh's hour is over now. The clock is striking twelves.' ... He still better be making at least a tiny reappearance in a special or something.
Matt was even better than I thought he'd be, but Moffat surprised me with the warmth of the script, and Jenna finally got a chance to really show her stuff, and after Matt broke my heart she skillfully ground the pieces into tiny granules in the dirt with her shoe. They all served Matt's exit beautifully, and I hope he's proud!
To anyone hating on the new Doctor. Don't be fuckin ridiculous. You can't judge him by a 30 second screen time. At least hold your hateful comments until you watch one full episode. I agree you can't really have a strong opinion on something you hardly know . I felt the same way when David Tennant regenerated and although I still like him better than Matt Smith , I still think Matt done just as good of a job being the Doctor . I just hope Peter Capaldi learns quickly how to fly the TARDIS .
Watching Matt cry at the table read sent me right back into tears. Can't wait to see what capaldi does, but I'm going to miss Matt Smith, not my first, but definitely MY doctor.

I'm crying... as during the episode. There is so much emotion. When we see Matt crying too and his sadness at the end, I have no word to explain that. I love him as the doctor and I'll miss him a lot.
This is why I think the regeneration was so fast. There are two steps in regeneration, healing and changing (remember david tennant's regeneration into himself, he healed but didn't need to change). That's why matt got younger, he healed and that was the explosive light and the usual regeneration effect we see in the modern era. The actual change is quite quick so that's why the change was fast, he had already healed, he just had to change (just an idea, makes some sense). Would have been nice to have a longer regeneration though but a very touching episode

Matt will always be my favourite doctor. It's a combination of a lot of things, his personality, the companions in his seasons, the plot of the episodes, so many things but he is my favourite.

I did a lot of crying this episode. One third of my tears were for Barnable, two thirds were for Handles, and three thirds were for Matt. I had to have two whole crying for this.
Honestly I might've cried. But it was so sudden! Which I suppose is good; I get to keep my track record of never crying at any movie/tv show. Closest I came to crying: An Adventure In Space And Time.
I've seen Gladiator, want to see I am Legend. Never heard of the Green Mile. Gladiator was heart breaking but I didn't cry. Soz but... but... HE WENT HOME! WAAAAAH WAAAAH!

Matt reading his last lines at the table and starting to cry just melts my heart. And then my heart melts even more when Moffat goes to comfort him. 11 is my first and favorite Doctor.
The funny thing is that when David Tennant regenerates he does just that, he equates regeneration with death. He basically says that all he is dies and a new man goes swaggering off in his place. I really liked the way Matt Smith regenerated. In a way, it was happier then David Tennant because he accepted the change. We also get the sense, from the 50th, that he can revisit old faces. So, over the past few seasons it's really been established that the old faces never die, they just live on in memory. The Doctor never dies, he just changes.
The last thing Ten said always bugged me for that exact reason, and I'm happy they sort of changed the tone of it in the 50th anniversary special... I now think his line 'I don't want to go' didn't imply death, but his knowledge of what will happen to him later.
The speech Moffat wrote for Matt's doctor at the end was so full of love. It was a perfect end for the Eleventh. I haven't cried that much over a tv show before. When the eleventh threw his bow tie, and when Amy showed up...and the speech. Wow, just wow, Moffat, you've done it. You've really done it.

When 9 left I was sad but didn't have that much time to completely fall in love with, but then when 10 was leaving I was like no I can't watching anymore and didn't think I was going to get over it...so now..I will always remember when the doctor was Matt...Matt Smith, I don't want to let go...
After saying goodbye to Ten, who is My Doctor, it took me a while to warm up to Eleven (and for that I mainly blame the character of Amy Pond, who I just can't stand), but I too got a bit emotional at his regeneration. His speech ("I will always remember when the Doctor was me") and the bow tie hitting the floor were truly sad moments... I wish Clara and Eleven had more episodes together, I really enjoyed their chemistry. Also, it would have been absolutely heartbreaking to have River appear at the end for one last goodbye. Here's hoping to see Matt Smith's Doctor return for a special episode or two. I would genuinely like that.
i think these 2 now tie (tennants was even more emotional on the personal level for his own doctor while 11's connected on a more audience like level, but both were emotion and a lil bit traumatic in how they both went out) but in truth, how they both went out were in fact the perfect ways to end their time.
no- he went out with an emotional bang, knowing his time was up- but before he went out he gave his companions each in his own way a farewell, he didn't want to go but he alas didn't have a choice- how is that not dignity? I think you need to go back and watch more of the doctor before you comment.

I cried on every regen since 2005, and while Matt's was so sad, yet so triumphant because he knew accepted it happening even with the pain…David's was the most heartbreaking for me because he was all alone and the look on his face was just aching for someone to be there with him. That being said, I really love Capaldi and I think he's just fantastic as a new a different side to the Doctor.
Twelve (I'm gonna call him Twelve even if he's not) will get into the knack and be able too fly the Tardis, Doctors have forgotten things before, for instance Eight, and he eventually remembered who he was, so I think he is going too be just the same and as I have always said "Phenomenal"
Moffat's comments to Radio Times said that Matt Smith IS the 13th, and last, Doctor (as was mentioned in the special). He was rebooted into his younger self after receiving the new regenerations from someone on Gallifrey (through the crack in Time). Thus he was young again before regenerating. Capaldi is now the beginning of a new series of Doctors. THAT is how Moffat got around the limitation from the canon.

To anyone hating on the new Doctor. Don't be fuckin ridiculous. You can't judge him by a 30 second screen time. At least hold your hateful comments until you watch one full episode. I didn't like Matt at first cause I still hadn't gotten over David Tennant. But you will learn to accept the new Doctor cause he will always be our Doctor underneath

I agree you can't really have a strong opinion on something you hardly know . I felt the same way when David Tennant regenerated and although I still like him better than Matt Smith , I still think Matt done just as good of a job being the Doctor . I just hope Peter Capaldi learns quickly how to fly the TARDIS .

I'm both happy that Capaldi is the new doctor and sad that Matt had to go. Maybe we will see him again in the 100 year special in 12D ;)

This was a very sad episode. It sucks to see Matt go, but that's what Doctor Who is all about: Change and moving forward. I'm very excited to see Peter Capaldi in the new season. His first lines were hilarious as is! :D

I'm crying... as during the episode. There is so much emotion. When we see Matt crying too and his sadness at the end, I have no word to explain that. I love him as the doctor and I'll miss him a lot.
This is why I think the regeneration was so fast. There are two steps in regeneration, healing and changing (remember david tennant's regeneration into himself, he healed but didn't need to change). That's why matt got younger, he healed and that was the explosive light and the usual regeneration effect we see in the modern era. The actual change is quite quick so that's why the change was fast, he had already healed, he just had to change (just an idea, makes some sense). Would have been nice to have a longer regeneration though but a very touching episode

Every time I watch Matt's regeneration I cry! I will miss Matt a lot! I have his regeneration speech as my lock screen! But I'm very excited to watch Peter Capaldi as the Doctor!

Matt will always be my favourite doctor. It's a combination of a lot of things, his personality, the companions in his seasons, the plot of the episodes, so many things but he is my favourite.

I did a lot of crying this episode. One third of my tears were for Barnable, two thirds were for Handles, and three thirds were for Matt. I had to have two whole crying for this.

The funny thing is that when David Tennant regenerates he does just that, he equates regeneration with death. He basically says that all he is dies and a new man goes swaggering off in his place. I really liked the way Matt Smith regenerated. In a way, it was happier then David Tennant because he accepted the change. We also get the sense, from the 50th, that he can revisit old faces. So, over the past few seasons it's really been established that the old faces never die, they just live on in memory. The Doctor never dies, he just changes.
The last thing Ten said always bugged me for that exact reason, and I'm happy they sort of changed the tone of it in the 50th anniversary special... I now think his line 'I don't want to go' didn't imply death, but his knowledge of what will happen to him later.
The speech Moffat wrote for Matt's doctor at the end was so full of love. It was a perfect end for the Eleventh. I haven't cried that much over a tv show before. When the eleventh threw his bow tie, and when Amy showed up...and the speech. Wow, just wow, Moffat, you've done it. You've really done it.
I remember watching him when I was a little kid recently I have rewatched the whole series and Matt smith still is and always will be my favourite doctor ❤

When 9 left I was sad but didn't have that much time to completely fall in love with, but then when 10 was leaving I was like no I can't watching anymore and didn't think I was going to get over it...so now..I will always remember when the doctor was Matt...Matt Smith, I don't want to let go...
After saying goodbye to Ten, who is My Doctor, it took me a while to warm up to Eleven (and for that I mainly blame the character of Amy Pond, who I just can't stand), but I too got a bit emotional at his regeneration. His speech ("I will always remember when the Doctor was me") and the bow tie hitting the floor were truly sad moments...
I wish Clara and Eleven had more episodes together, I really enjoyed their chemistry. Also, it would have been absolutely heartbreaking to have River appear at the end for one last goodbye.
Here's hoping to see Matt Smith's Doctor return for a special episode or two. I would genuinely like that.

i think these 2 now tie (tennants was even more emotional on the personal level for his own doctor while 11's connected on a more audience like level, but both were emotion and a lil bit traumatic in how they both went out) but in truth, how they both went out were in fact the perfect ways to end their time.

no- he went out with an emotional bang, knowing his time was up- but before he went out he gave his companions each in his own way a farewell, he didn't want to go but he alas didn't have a choice- how is that not dignity? I think you need to go back and watch more of the doctor before you comment.

Oh my gosh! *Tears* I didn't think I would cry this hard but especially after hearing the shakiness in Matt's voice and feeling the emptiness filling the room as the shooting of the last scene was coming to an end it felt more and more real and more and more tears fell from my eyes. Oh my dear Matt Smith Moffit said it perfectly, you truly were/are the best Doctor of them all because you were the bravest...you took on a country and world of haters that could not let go of Tennant and you showed them how real hard working actors GET IT DONE! Thank you for entertaining me with your beauty and smarts. Thank you for not giving up on those who loved you from the start and those who eventually figured out they loved you from the start. You are always missed and appreciated. I hope somehow you accidentally read this. ;) THANK YOU! LOVE YOU, LOVE YOUR WORK!

Too annoying and goofy, I also didn't like the way Moffat portrayed him. He is a great actor, but his Doctor was the worst after Colin Baker. :)

Izamanaick, I love Clara, loved Amy & Rose, loved most of the companions over the years, but none have matched the relationship of Sarah Jane Smith with the Doctor -- especially with the 4th Doctor, but no matter what changes he went through, Sarah Jane Smith is legend. The best ever.

actually this is the "doctor" that made me pick up the show and watch it starting with the first episode of the 9th doctor, really dislike the 9th doctor and the 10th was decent, but i patiently watched through all that just so i could understand as much of the story as i could until i would get to this latest seasons with Matt Smith
i might watch the really old seasons one day, but one fact remains there without a doubt, i only started to like the show because Matt Smith played the doctor and i hope i won't stop watching it when capaldi plays the doctor

I cried on every regen since 2005, and while Matt's was so sad, yet so triumphant because he knew accepted it happening even with the pain…David's was the most heartbreaking for me because he was all alone and the look on his face was just aching for someone to be there with him. That being said, I really love Capaldi and I think he's just fantastic as a new a different side to the Doctor.

Twelve (I'm gonna call him Twelve even if he's not) will get into the knack and be able too fly the Tardis, Doctors have forgotten things before, for instance Eight, and he eventually remembered who he was, so I think he is going too be just the same and as I have always said "Phenomenal"
Moffat's comments to Radio Times said that Matt Smith IS the 13th, and last, Doctor (as was mentioned in the special). He was rebooted into his younger self after receiving the new regenerations from someone on Gallifrey (through the crack in Time). Thus he was young again before regenerating. Capaldi is now the beginning of a new series of Doctors. THAT is how Moffat got around the limitation from the canon.
