  • Filmed on a quiet afternoon in a room full of Lego! Welcome back to Reserved Investments and thank you for joining me. It's time we have a candid and honest discussion that may surprise some you because over the short term almost anyone can beat the returns of investing in an S & P 500 index fund just by choosing to speculate on an alternate asset class...be it collectibles, gold, or Bitcoin...but there is a catch! Unfortunately, you are NOT a unique and special snowflake, nor are you a financial genius. This is the nature of alternate asset investing (i.e.speculating). You simply got lucky like almost every other 'Timmy' holding (or I should say 'hoarding") these same items...so let's have a discussion about this...

It's a shame so many people get introduced to investing by social media scammers. The Grant Cardones and Gary Vees of the world have done an awful lot of damage.

  • @RandomGuy-lu1en

people cherrypick their items that have gone up in value and forget the stuff that went down.

"Like a drug dealer who gets high on your own supply" Brilliant analogy

I've been watching a lot of video game channels lately, and I've noticed that owning rare video games has become a status symbol. Many middle-aged collectors showcase their valuable collections, which they never actually play. These people are often referred to as "shelf collectors." They hoard their collections and will likely never sell them. When they pass away, their wives, mothers, or children will probably end up selling the games at a garage sale for next to nothing.

Over the last few years you have totally changed my mind on collecting / investing. On another note i would love to see a tour of your collection.

  • @paulroy3673

For any item that isn’t rare, buyers will always sort by ‘Lowest Price.’

“If you torture data long enough, it’ll tell you what you want to hear.”

Great video. Love the confidence. It's awesome to watch how you've evolved over the past couple years. Keep doing what you do.

  • @Johndeplume.

Lego isn't for me, but I really like how you've displayed your collection, Shawn (and good to see you broadcast from another room).

Beyond just the transactional % costs for selling your own collectibles through a platform like eBay, there is also the time factor. What is also not obvious to a seller when selling though a larger auction house like Heritage, is that the final 'sell' price includes their buyer's premium (I think 18%) which inflates the final hammer price. In my experience, the best returns you'll make is when you get lucky and buy something at substantially below market, and hold on to it for a while, something that requires a lot of patience which is not easy to do.

THIS is the video I’ve been waiting for! Thank you!!

  • @victorysla

Thanks for keeping me in check! Great video!

  • @jedirun

congrats on 17K, I remember commenting a few years ago saying that I think you wil get to 20K subs faster than you think ;)

  • @hartspot009

Another winner Shawn! I think you just might be making a dent with the uninformed collectors

  • @jayz6706

There’s so many poketubers out there telling everyone to go buy these sword and shield booster boxes, etc. And analyzing pokemon cards with some next level market analysis. I’ll be honest I got sucked in myself a bit into the FOMO

  • @UKDark_Mark

Excellent video again Shawn, thank you. So much truth. You remain the best voice of reason on TH-cam 👍👍

Loved that you showed some of your collection. I would love to see the video game room!

  • @thevideogamecabinet3681

Great analogy when you said the videogame hoarders are like drug dealers getting high on their own supply. That’s EXACTLY how it is! Lol

  • @mfdoom1898

Nothing really to comment aside from ... Agreed

  • @humblecartoons3483

I love the new background! Really nice framing too!
