one of the best clutch replacement videos I have ever seen. great job. if this is how you do work, I certainly hope you are kept very busy. thank you for the video.
BIG WARNING TO EVERYONE WITH A LEFT HAND DRIVE!!! It's not as easy to put the gearbox to the side, because the steering shaft is in the way. You have to lower the whole subframe and even then I was only able to get 10cm between the engine and the gearbox. It sucks, but it's possible. Took me about 16h for an LHD vehicle. (No impact wrench, mostly alone (needed help from time to time to press the brake etc) and no experience on cars (I'm a toolmaker)) Otherwise brilliant camera work! Thank you for this tutorial.
Thanks for the comment. I am working on a LHD right now. I was wondering, why there is not enough space to move the gearbox aside. Do I have to diconnect more engine parts, like the exhaust? Maybe the engine mounts?
@@turbotown No engine parts have to be disconnected. I just took every screw, that's holding the subframe, out. (4 big screws, two in the front and those along the steering mechanism. That's all what I remember after half a year) You have to support the subframe, so it doesn't fall all the way down. Get the frame as low as possible and then try to rotate the gearbox untill you find a position where you can get maybe 10 or 15cm between the engine and gearbox.
Watched this video a couple of times and today I removed my gearbox to swap the clutch release bearing as it was noisy . Your footage is spot on and I wouldn’t have attempted it without this. You have all my respect as I see that you are doing this for a living, this is hard work! Again thank you for this video, regards from Norway.

Just did this for my T5 using your video as guide, way better than using a manual with pixelated or grease-stained pictures. Only difference was some DPF mounting on the gearbox, but it was easy enough to get to. Also used a Sachs instead of a Luk, I know they're are said to be a smoother ride, but so far so good. Really appreciate your channel, and you sharing your skills and experience.

I know vws can be a bit of a nightmare to work on but do like the way they are built, some of it is sensible thinking, especially those drive shafts that bolt up instead of having to pop them out and the hassle of having to clean or replace seals when refitting.

@@WMCS Yea I agree, personally it's Toyota for me then Vw, being an owner of a 92 MR2 turbo I've really grown to love these imports, granted it isn't the easiest to work on engine wise being at mid point but the rest of it is well thought about, Japan and Germany make the best motors.
@@WMCS i will be finding out what they do but the dual mass can be drilled and locked to secure unit as a single mass flywheel hope this is not what they doing but will revert back when i have more infomation
Great visuals. Just spent a few days doing; check CV joints, replace split CV boots, replace one drive shaft, and check notorious splines on my own same vehicle. Now done - using axle stands similar to your set up. So I appreciate what you can do so seemingly effortlessly. It's was a core muscle tone up for me for sure. I found those M8 half-shaft support bearing bolts go into some weak old alloy - one stripped so I bolted straight through. The other had a Screw Thread Insert(STI). Why don't VW just put STI at the start? Seems easy. Not used a rattle gun yet (old guy here) , but how do you control torque with that thing? The different need of a hub nut(200Nm) and those half shaft bolts(25Nm) - big difference.
Thanks for the video. My son has this vehicle and in addition to replacing the clutch need to remove the gearbox. Are there many more components to remove to remove the box? Cheers
Great video thanks. I am about to pull the box out of my 05 T5 6spd 4motion. I have it on stands right now. Is it an engine out job? The 4 motion has the extra rear transfer case. I also have a 2012 multivan biturbo that has had the engine submersed in water. That definately is an engine out job. I started tackling that this morning but need the 4 motion to be going sooner. Looking forward to the 2.0 vid
Mine's in today for a clutch. On a lift. Either you're super fast and super skilled, or the 5 hours and 20 mins labour I've been quoted is a bit much lol
When u stick the bell housing of the gear box back on, can you tell easily if the axle has slipped back in ok? Can you feel it mate properly? Also, if you want to remove the gear box, can get away with just taking out 2 of the U-carrier bolts, or would u have to drop the U carrier from the other side a bit? (Vw says to remove completely)..
TK It’s always important to torque any bolts up if always unsure ..,, I can only speak for myself here..,, personally knowing the correct tightness is based on when I remove the bolts ..,, it’s a feel that I can’t pass on in terms of knowledge to others..,,
T K that is a very good question I was thinking to post on some of Kevin’s videos he recorded in detail working on Passats and Audi’s. I must say first that is doing incredible job here, quite impressive!!!👏👍 all these jobs on cars he had done? However, I couldn’t see him setting torque moments on DMF 60Nm+90 and clutch+ pressure plate 20 NM in any of videos he worked on VW or Audi or Škoda cars. In addition old Gearbox Screws ought to be replaced and new torqued with 80 Nm and lower three ones with 40 Nm according to kind VW-Audi-Škoda-Seat manual. Furthermore, all VW manual instructions insist that to tighten DMF to 60 Nm+90 is a must due to high vibration within DMF, the same applies for Clutch. There is also wheel bolt which ought to be replaced according to VW each time is unscrewed and tighten with 200Nm+180. I have seen it by many mechanics to whom I brought my car for repairs fitting the same screws over and over again. It begs the question do I have to remind them every time when they work on my car to replace screws. I would not mind paying additionally for new bolts necessary for a car.
Mate I’ve had that wobbly and hammer for nearly 6 years now. You’re right it cost a bit .,, but I wouldn’t leave home without it now. Hope things going good your end. And always nice to hear from you.
Thanks for taking time to leave a feedback Hugo .., we really appreciate that ..,, it’s challenging work but I wouldn’t change it for anything less than this ...
given how much old flywheel and clutch plates weigh, do you collect them all year and weight them in at xmas? or just give them to your local scrap man or somthing as you go along
have to do this tomorrow for the first time on a t5. too bad our customers car is a four wheel drive... it will be fun i guess. but this will help me a lot. greetings from germany. ;-)
Mi G..,, it’s great to know the videos are helping even in the smallest of ways .., the only function of the special tool is to press on the pressure plate for an even pressure whilst tightening the bolts in a continuous loop. .., but that can be easily replicated by tightening the bolts down in in a star pattern.
I’ve done a few of these on my back, those box’s are heavy, I’ve always taken the subframe off completely. Think I’ll just lower next time looking at this
I did this step by step watching this on my laptop in the garage . Awesome method !! Question …. I was pretty knackered by the end of the day and got the gearbox nearly out when trying to get it back in but I wonder if you can manipulate it to actually get it out because I need to because I still have an issue I’m fairly sure is in the gearbox ????????
Brilliantly made video. Have done a few golfs and skodas but need to do my T5 soon as its starting to slip in 5th gear. Dude, I love your technique but you've got to find a better way of lifting those boxes than bench pressing them😅😅 Gonna catch up with you sooner or later. Cool to see you dont need to drop the box right to the floor on the T5. Just to confirm, did you just lower the subframe on the one side of the van? Thanks again
Hi what is the red stuff you applied to the new clutch? Also what's that stuff in the bottle that you sprayed on the new clutch? Thanks so much for making this video
Great vlogs on the T5 clutch change. I have a Euro5 T6. Is it always necessary to change the flywheel along with the clutch or just good practice? Yes with the thrust bearing but it's a long long time since I changed any clutches, probably a Mini in the 70s.
Hi Brian. Definitely change the flywheel as it is the main issue that causes the clutch to slip. Hope the video comes through for you. The 70’s was the year. Long hair high platform shoes 😁🍻✨✨
Hi Kevin. I'm just about to takle this on my T5. Any reason why you drain the transmission fluid? Can it be done without? Great video, really valuable. Thank you.
Usually it’s the DMF that fails on them. The clutch it’s quite heavy duty. You’ll start noticing a slight pulse in the clutch pedal that will gradually get worse.
Awsome work. Both making the video and replacing the clutch/flywheel. Im about to do this my self and this video helps alot. You seem to prefer LUK kits. Any special reason? Is the installation same as on other brands like Valeo?
With a Dual Mass Flywheel and auto adjusting pressure plate i recommend fitting the whole kit like in this video.... instead of individual parts because these parts all fail around the same time..... Learned from a customers mistake now.....couldnt afford the whole kit so had to remove gearbox 4 times anyway..... Spend more money and labour time by NOT fitting the whole kit first time around
Hi so do these have a dualmass flywheel or SMF ? Cause i got the 2007 1.9l citivan and need to replace clutch wondering which kit i need to buy… Thanks in advance
Them VW transporters can be a nightmare at the best of times, never mind doing a clutch and flywheel ON YOUR BACK, tell you something, You have my respect. I found these difficult even with the luxury of a ramp especially when you've to cut flywheels out 🙊🙉🙈
Thanks as always for the positive feedback...,, It’s always great to hear from someone that’s actually done it and knows hands down what they are on about ...,
@@WMCS i remember the first time we did a clutch, flywheel and gearbox replacement on a T4 Transporter 2.5l diesel. Took us 6 hours to remove the subframe as the tortion bar adjustment nuts were siezed and could not be heated due to being located next to the tank, so after 6 hours of muttering ffs's and breaking 2 22mm sockets we eventually got the subframe out, replacing the clutch, flywheel and the concentric slave cylinder went ok until we fitted the gearbox, we discovered that the old gearbox had reverse beside 5th and the replacement gearbox had reverse beside 1st, after some faffing around we were able to work out that a pin on the gear selector could be held in place with a little tack weld, worked fine but was really easy to put in reverse rather than 1st but we got there in the end (customer didn't want to replace the gearstick and linkages) so that was our little 'haphazard' way around it. Good times, and what's even better is that we could've saved 6 hours as the subframe didn't have to even be touched, turns out you push the engine forward after disconnecting the rear mount and shove a foot long piece of wood against the subframe and sump of the engine and wiggle the gearbox out 😂😂😂 Edit: found out that the subframe didn't have to be removed after doing this job on four T4 transporters

Спасибо за видеообзор, всё ясно и понятно.👍
Salut Kevin. Super work comme toujours 👍👍👍👍
Westa westa..., salut a toi aussi..,, Merci bient pour votre feedback ....
thats the whole job for take the gearbox out of the car? I want to change my gearbox.
Great work 👌✌️
Perfekt video !!!!! million thanks !
Thanks for the feedback Jimmie.
Thank you . I will be doing my van soon these darn dual mass hope to refurbish mine
You can’t refurb them as far as I’m aware
That’s great you managed it all. My impact gun’s range is from 60-1200nm.
So it’s important to know the impact point for each nuts and bolts.
Nice job, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the video. My son has this vehicle and in addition to replacing the clutch need to remove the gearbox. Are there many more components to remove to remove the box? Cheers
You can actually pull the gearbox out just by lowering that corner subframe ..,, keep an eye out for the next video. It’s a 2.0L T5
How was it
@@WMCS still in! I'm waiting for a phone call.
Thanks for this video. Just doing the same job.
Very, very good video, respect.
Hi,
Great video. Just wondering what that tool part number is that your using to align the clutch and pressure plate. Thanks
Nice!!Gold Job! But how you did the torque Moments? Flywheel 60 NM and 90 °?
TK It’s always important to torque any bolts up if always unsure ..,, I can only speak for myself here..,, personally knowing the correct tightness is based on when I remove the bolts ..,, it’s a feel that I can’t pass on in terms of knowledge to others..,,
That's wrist settling T. Or if it falls off it will kill you , wrist settling FT. Simples 😁
The question is mean. He doesn't know torque ...

i like your 1/2 to 3/8 mac wobbly ,bloody dear and special order
Mate I’ve had that wobbly and hammer for nearly 6 years now. You’re right it cost a bit .,, but I wouldn’t leave home without it now. Hope things going good your end. And always nice to hear from you.
Well done thanks for sharing Kev
Springier thanks for visiting our channel and taking time to leave us a feedback..,, really appreciated
Love your job! Wish I could leave every day boring job to do what I love to! Keep up the good work!! 💪💪💪👏👍👍👍
Thanks for taking time to leave a feedback Hugo .., we really appreciate that ..,, it’s challenging work but I wouldn’t change it for anything less than this ...
Excellent DIY Video...
given how much old flywheel and clutch plates weigh, do you collect them all year and weight them in at xmas? or just give them to your local scrap man or somthing as you go along
Respect ✊ you are the best 👏👏👏
bonsoir bravo bravo bravo excellent travail 👍👍👍👍
Merci bient mon Amis.
have to do this tomorrow for the first time on a t5. too bad our customers car is a four wheel drive... it will be fun i guess. but this will help me a lot. greetings from germany. ;-)
Even the 4WD is very straightforward.
The transfer box comes out so easy…
@@WMCS nice to hear this. yeah i think it will be allright in the end. little more screws and thats it. the rest should be pretty much the same.
Prima
Impressive Kevin, 👍👌
Thank you.
amazing job man, that was wonderful, you make it seemed nice and easy 👏👏👏 can you make this type of videos for petrol type of Volkswagen T5
I don’t think I’ve come across a petrol version before. What engine size is it.
Another great video. I was wondering if you could put a list of tools needed for the job in description?
Thanks ... I can’t promise to do much more than post videos ..,, but hopefully you’ll stay tuned for more great videos coming up.
Good video on how to install a SAC without special tools.
I keep learning from you.
👍👍
Yes very easy. Slacken the other side subframe a bit more and it should come flying out.
very good job mate!
Segugio thanks for taking time to leave a review and watching the video.
Wonderful job 👍
great work as ever
Superb job ad always keV.
Superb as always
Thanks for the support. Always appreciated
Well done mate 👊🏽👌🏽
C'est un chantier 💪🔧
Very nice. Working

Love your videos, just wondering if you do more like high performance clutches? Like installing heavy duty style? Would be good to see
I tend to keep to original parts ..,, I suppose it’ll be nice to see one being installed..,,
Hi Kevin. I'm just about to takle this on my T5. Any reason why you drain the transmission fluid? Can it be done without? Great video, really valuable. Thank you.
You don’t have to drain the fluid. I did it because I was replacing it.
@@WMCS Awesome Thanks Kevin
Very impressive thanks for the vid 👏👏👏👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Hi
Just recently purchased a 1.9TDI T5 transporter, any warning signs to look out for when clutch on its way out?
Thanks
Seš šikovnej kámo 👍👍
Great job! What oil you put in the gearbox?I have 1.9 tdi 102 cv! Thank you!
It’s MTF 75w90 synthetic lube.
What clutch are the best and what the worst clutch kit you have come across
What penetrating oil do you use kevin ?
Hi Peter. I stick with WD40..,, And always use plenty of it before I touch most bolts.
Hi so do these have a dualmass flywheel or SMF ? Cause i got the 2007 1.9l citivan and need to replace clutch wondering which kit i need to buy…
Thanks in advance
Nice work
Them VW transporters can be a nightmare at the best of times, never mind doing a clutch and flywheel ON YOUR BACK, tell you something, You have my respect.
Good times, and what's even better is that we could've saved 6 hours as the subframe didn't have to even be touched, turns out you push the engine forward after disconnecting the rear mount and shove a foot long piece of wood against the subframe and sump of the engine and wiggle the gearbox out 😂😂😂
Edit: found out that the subframe didn't have to be removed after doing this job on four T4 transporters
Awesome video thx men
Hello my gear pedal stays down end I loose oil dot 4 the leak is at the bolt which connects the gearbox with the engine is it worth to repair it and Wil
it maybe leak later again by the way mine is a axd 2.5 2004 respect
