      Hi Joe, I have a question, I have a Magnavox Odyssey 400 and it is just giving me the ball back to the game when it marked the left field, when I mark the right it does not give me a score and does not return the ball, do you have any idea what it could be? Thank you very much in advance and greetings from Palma de Mallorca, I love your videos 🤗

    My wife noticed I was watching your TH-cam video of Pong. She worked for Atari in the late 70s and early 80s and told me she played a pong game in the lobby of the building she worked in. We lived in Fremont Which is only about 15 minutes from silicon Valley. Thanks for the video, great job of repair and great memories.

    One video game you may have heard of that is extremely rare is "Death Race". I used to play that regularly at my local record store. The object of the game was to run over as many people as possible. When you ran them over a cross marked where they died. It was banned eventually, but my record store never got the memo. Good times.

    I used to watch a channel called John's arcade and he has one of these machines. They are always running in the background and it's always bothered me that you could see the little blip when the ball hits the top or bottom so I'm glad you're addressing it and that I'm not the only one it bothers.

    Bringing a voice to the Pong is a great thing. Silent Pong's are awful.
    Sounds like Atari new about the ball getting stuck issue and that is why they limited the bat travel.

    If you watch the ball bounce off the right hand side ( start at 10:35 ) you will clearly see the the timing issue, as the ball hits ( actually slightly before ) the side, it then jumps horizontally a tiny bit then continues on its way at the correct angle, I believe this is an example of the messed up sync and general sloppy state of the timing, but this little example explains the whole net too far to the left problem....Oh Yeah! go Joe!..I love Arkanoid too!

      Yeah it was a very interesting time, all the stuff is priceless, something about the technology of it makes the stuff so much more interesting and fun to me. I was talking to an old school guy the other day and we were thinking about how fun it was back in the day to download or make copies on floppy drives of somebody else's little game program they had, and how cool it was that you could get a copy of it, take it home and try it out. The games were a lot more simple but there was something about the way you acquired it, and loaded it even that made it more fun to play. Now you can download 10's of 1000's of games on Steam in an instant but it just isn't the same, something's lost.
      It's kind of like how you can download any song now, or listen to it here on youtube... but back in the day you'd wait around the radio all day to hear your favorite new song, it made it better that you had to wait for it or you didn't have immediate access to it, these old games have a little bit of that going on, they were only in certain places you had to travel to, and then you had to pay to play them. The presentation goes a long way, even though it's such a simple game.

    You got me really nostalgic there for a second. First arcade game I ever played. I was on a winter resort and they got one in one of the hallways, and a couple of others in a room in the basement (among others a racing game I loved). Hated skiing and skating, so I played games most of the time. AND one of my first records I bought myself were Steppenwolf "For ladies only", with really psychedelic cover art.

I fixed a Stunt Cycle one time and it tells you line by line how everything works. His Lawn Tennis document is even more in detail though and doesn't just cover the theory it covers other ways to do it and things people have learned since the engineers designed it so it's very very cool!

    I have a point to make about the jerks trying to tell you how to pronounce something or that your calling something by the wrong name in your videos. People in different parts of the country can call the same thing by different names. Take Soda Pop for instance. In the Midwest we called it Pop. When I moved to California they call it Soda. Well to me Soda is what you put in Scotch. One Manufacturer can call a Round Bumper a Pop Bumper and the next a Thumper Bumper. I'm from Chicago and I worked for a Gottlieb Distributor. We pronounced it "Got Leeb". Gottlieb is actually a German name. So it depends on where your from how people might pronounce it. So in the future if anyone trys to tell you how to pronounce something or what something is called just ignore it.

      I'm just messing with them, they're all so uptight I like to trigger them a little bit with my southern Drawl. If they complain enough I just block them :) Thanks for watching Ray we appreciate it.... I think a lot of the viewers are engineers and such and they are much more precise with what they assume or have been told is right or wrong. We need people like that too with little social skills, because they're the only people who have the precision to make that Space X vehicle dock with the space station last night for instance... if I tried to do that, I would have probably got somebody killed because I'm not as precise. When you're so uptight you care how other people pronunciate things, you're probably uptight enough to do Rocket Science :)

      @@LyonsArcade Sorry to change the subject but Elon does get a lot of people killed. Not with Space X but with Tesla, all the autopilot crashes. There's a standard self driving system that works better, but he wants to save a few bucks on licensing and GPU chips (for self driving cars the GPUs are for turning the camera images into a 3D model for collision detection, a fail safe that works along side the AI - he pretty much just skips the safety on purpose). He's kind of an asshole, even though he has social skills; I think those are separate things. He's a control freak like the people who get aggressive about pronunciation or pointless stuff, the factory is a gulag. But then again there are other people who really do want to help and share knowledge but just suck at it, maybe they're young or never had parents. Either way - I try to think about them like they're practicing and still learning and trying to say something that at least they think is important and occasionally actually is important. I can never really tell some people's intentions over text, but I know how depressing and isolating it can get for people who don't have anyone to talk to, so I try to talk to them if I have time. Sometimes it sucks, but if they actually are a real bully then messing with them and escalating might just make them go shoot up a school or beat up their little brother or some shit, so I try to talk to them either way. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, sometimes I'm the asshole. Sorry for rambling. Anyway, thanks for mentioning the game before Pong, I looked up the story and it's pretty awesome, and what a rad cabinet design. I almost wish that one took off instead of Pong.. almost

    Great job. The thing that completely baffles me the most is that this board does not have a microprocessor. Game logic, digit creation, even rasterization is all done in discrete logic?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah it's pretty incredible. If you ever want to get deep in the weeds, look at how the early cinematronics boards worked, like Star Castle. Some dude designed the entire system himself, with a generic 'cpu' board that could run many games, and separate audio boards per game... plus he created his own vector monitor. He found "cinematronics" which was a company making pong clones and sold them his idea... they agreed to pay him HALF THE PROFITS just for using his design. The board in the production model of most of the early cinematronics boards had ram and rom but didn't use a CPU, it was all done with discrete logic. www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/S/StarCastle.pdf

      Fascinating how resourceful people can be.

      @@LyonsArcade ...And then they had some kind of falling out, the designer guy decided to go it alone (Vectorbeam) and Cinematronics reverse-engineered the board so they could keep making games... then Vectorbeam failed after a couple of years and Cinematronics bought its assets. So there's this very confusing relationship between the two companies; some games are credited as being by both of them...

    Isn't this machine the one that got Atari sued? I think RCA made a patents claim. And this supposedly was why Atari held off on releasing the 2600 console. They were legally blocked from releasing it until they settled up with RCA if I remember right.
    It's weird how a lot of the history of retro machines was fraught with lawsuits. MOS was started by former Motorola employees, including Chuck Peddle and Bill Mensch. They made a CPU similar to the 6800 and called it the 6501. Motorola sued MOS to prevent them from releasing it. The 6501 was only pin-compatible, not object compatible, so putting a 6501 on a machine using a 6800 was not straightforward. You'd have to change the ROM and all the software used. So not sure why Motorola felt threatened. I guess this was just them being upset to have employees walking out on them. But MOS never released the 6501. And they changed it slightly, made the pin-outs incompatible, and sold it as the 6502. The rest is history.
    Even a 3rd-party Atari game led to suits. Custer's Revenge was the game. Women's groups hated it, Native-American groups hated it, some state legislators hated it, and the industry hated the state legislators for hating it. That was partly why home video game consoles started having vendor-locking. The videogame industry crash also played into that. Atari added vendor locking to the 7800 with the rationale that since they used a better video coprocessor, software companies would love to get a hold of that for writing pornographic games, and they didn't want to be blamed for controversial games.

      The first video one (with a monitor) was called Computer Space, very rare. There were lots of coin operated games though before Pong, and thousands of Pinball Machines of course. Tons of jukeboxes.... lots of mechanical games, and games that used projectors.

    have you tried to degause the screen. im not sure if that would work for the burn in

    • @buddhistsympathizer1136
      @buddhistsympathizer1136 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Degaussing (de-magnetising the screen) would not affect burn-in, which is phosphor damage caused to the screen over time.
      Degaussing is only performed on Colour CRT screens which have poor or incorrect colours displayed due to the screen surround becoming magnetised.

      Thank you for watching Bob, yes unfortunately the degause ring wouldn't fix this, the only way to fix it is to change the tube...

    Joes Classic, Those Slip Clutch Pots have a built in clutch to prevent the shaft from breaking snapping off the wiper? I have never heard of Slip Clutch Pots before or have seen them. I'm confused did someone take out the original audio board and audio power amp and speaker in the Pong game or did they originally want you to plug the Pong game into an external stereo system?I'm guessing you can use any arcade monitor as a replacement for the Pong game and it will work?

      Thanks, What do you mean by Modified regular TV set, what was modified in the TV set?When opening up a slip clutch pot, does the wiper stop moving but the shaft keeps moving? compared to a normal pot the wiper is fused with the shaft that is why the wiper will break off the shaft

      Thanks for the help. I think the pots in the 50's and 60's used carbon composition for the resistive disc track and the 70's ,80's, 90's used metal film or carbon film resistive disc tracks for pots. The taper in the pots makes a difference. Eddie Van Halens wiper rubbed the resistive disc track to a custom made taper curve, not sure how this was done. I have tried using sandpaper and graphite paper to "wear out" the resistive disc track to make custom made taper curves like what Eddie Van Halen did. Take a look at the video at time 1:20 it shows the worn out customer taper curve that the pots wiper did over time. I'm trying to mimic this using sandpaper and graphite paper but it makes the wah or volume pots have that scratchy noisy sound would you turn the pot back and forth which I don't want the scratchy noisy sounds in the resistance disc track. Put a test grid generator on it, then adjust the game. Capiche?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James, "Capiche" is a demeaning comment, watch your mouth. You're speaking to me as if you know something I don't, but you've never adjusted a black and white t.v., and the entire point of my video was to illustrate that the video signal is off center, not the video display on the monitor. If you hook up a test grid to the screen, and when you rotate the adjustment rings on the yoke that you know nothing about, and it still doesn't center it, what do you do then, James? A little more of an attempt to understand and a little less demeaning Italian would be a good idea.
      I'm fixing 50 year old shit at component level and you're telling me you've got one up on me because you know what a TPG is. Please.

      Not where I come from, Joe. Anyway, I apologise if I upset you.
      The idea of the grid is to at least start from a datum line, then make ttl board adjustments.
      I have a Taito Space Invaders that I had to correct and ended up having to tape magnets to the aquadag to get the geometry right.
      You’re quite nasty.
