  • Chris Banning is a legend, THE legend of Mulholland Drive. The original outlaw, who grew up racing on open Hollywood roads. He started with his 911S and discovered the need for competition when one night, an unexpected "beater" passes him at the speed of light. That moment sparked a relentless desire to build something that was specifically, and uniquely, meant to dominate Mulholland.
He travelled across the ocean, learned a new language, entered Porsche's Factory vaults of racing until he figured out how to put together the ultimate Mulholland Drive race car, piecing together 4 different Porsches, with an RSR soul.
Chris' racer is a one of a kind Porsche with an incredible story: come see it in person at the Petersen Museum, now on display in the We Are Porsche exhibit.
The We Are Porsche exhibit is now open at the Petersen Automotive Museum: with over 40 vehicles on display spacing from prototypes, to infamous race and movie cars, we celebrate the vehicles, the people and stories that made Porsche what it is today. Mad respect to anyone who takes German language lessons just to read Porsche instruction manuals in Deutsch. Now that's dedication!

RESPECT… Singer and Porsche both owe you royalties Chris. ;)

This guy and his car was one reason I had to visit LA 5 years ago to try and experience the Mulholland race course. I traveled from NC just for that experience. The movie is what started it for me.

His custom 911S is astounding. The seemless transition of the short hood to the chopped top with a flush rear windshield is unlike any bespoke Porsche I've seen. Such raw intensity captured visually. I hope this very special example is always kept by future owners the same way Mr. Banning has. Thanks for sharing.
Should dub this "The Banned 911S", banned being nod to Chris's last name.

This is why Porsche has so many die hard enthusiasts and followers, because of some amazing people like this guy. I’ll bet this car has defined part of his life, and given him joy in every moment where he couldn’t be driving it, because in the back of his mind he is always waiting for the next drive and sprint in his car on his favorite street. After recently attending Rennsport 7, it’s incredible how many people most of whom could own any variety of sports cars all swoon and have at least one or multiple Porsches in their collection. I’ve just recently acquired my own older and very used 911, and I’m hooked after wanting one my whole life, it’s really as fantastic as all the fans say it is, and I’ve owned lots of various modern and old sports and muscle cars. The people that like and love Porsche are such an interesting and wide range of different people from all over the world, I’m starting to believe a big part of being an owner is the fascinating other people that own them. People constantly stop me and tell me how much they love the 911, and have wanted one their whole life. I think for car enthusiasts and even those who aren’t, owning a Porsche is like a bucket list thing, and it doesn’t matter what year or model, once you have one your part of a unique group who is super fortunate to get to experience what it’s like to drive and own one. As cliche as the line is “there is no substitute”, I think for many it’s a fact they would agree with 100%. There’s a feeling you get when you drive a Porsche that connects you with the car, it’s like you and the car become one. There are many faster cars, and there are many cars that debatably look cooler or more exotic, but unless they have the soul like a Porsche, they’re just another fast car that will one day usually look outdated, while Porsches seem to get cooler and sophisticated as they get older, almost like a great wine that’s aged, and a bit like sometimes the older people who often drive them, wiser and who know what they want and what makes them happy….😊

Living in L.A., I have seen enough Porsches, but there is one that is interesting enough that I am going to the Petersen to see it. Of course, it is Chris Banning’s 911. I have always wanted to see it in person. It’s not just another correct ‘74 RSR replica.

drove that stretch of mulholland for decades, plenty of fun... although laurel and coldwater canyons are great too. In many ways the parts of laurel (LA side) are even more fun as part of it is non asphalt has great bumps and can be slippery, makes a really fun and wild driving experience. The entire stretch of mulholland from cahuenga pretty much all the way to beverly glen is great. i had fun racing many cars but if a person was ignorant enough to use both lanes, that was a big no-no. oh, sepulveda and beverly glenn are also great... better have good brakes.

Fun story, sounds like a small fish bowl of guys who were never good enough to race at the track though.
