Criminals walked into my daughters flat in Andringa Street and stole her laptop. She was not at home but her flatmates were. We could see the location of the laptop but the police said they can’t do anything. We have the CCTV footage clearly showing faces. The police asked us (3 months later) if we want to close the case. We said no. Haven’t heard anything from the police since.

They go to the thieves hideout with the police but they can't go in because they don't have a warrant.
And the cops we're standing outside the thieves premises like idiots, because without a warrant from a judge they could basically do nothing, beside having the technological evidence that his device is in the house on Google maps.
It's ridiculous. SAPS should be more prepared and efficient

I'm so irritated with the high level of crime in this country. We can't even enjoy the beauty of South Africa because of crime. South Africa is even more beautiful in the night time. I would love late night walks and drives, especially during the summertime but the lack of proper policing means that'll never be a reality ever.

You are not safe ANYWHERE in South Africa. That's a fact. If you're not even safe in your home or a church, where do you think you will be safe? And yes, we lived through an armed robbery in our home, outside of Stellenbosch. Held at ransom by 5 masked criminals with guns to our heads. So we can speak from experience.
It's everywhere in South Africa. It's worse in Gauteng. But because people don't expect it in Stellenbosch, it makes the news.

Stellenbosch police station is shocking. I suppose its not Stellenbosch specific (SAPS in general) but they are extremely rude and arrogant in my opinion and I think they are not very fond of students or the culture in Stellenbosch, thus they do not feel very obligated to assist you properly. I only had to go there to report a car accident but I would not like to have to be there for more serious incidents, my confidence in them is not very high.

This is nothing new. I went to Stellies from 2010 to 2014, and even then, students used to get robbed coming back from clubs or the study center.
Student houses used to be broken into all the time.
You would come back from your lecture and find that your room has been broken into.
Female students had to be accompanied at night by USBD from the library or student center to their koshuis or even shuttles that went off campus.
None of this is new. At least now it's getting some light

Same. I stayed in Alexander Street 100m away from the Police Station. One day I was walking back from the Engineering Faculty and was harassed by two Tsoti's. Manage to fight them off and threw the one to the ground while the other one ran off. It happened close to Aandklas / Adam Tas Theatre / Taxi Rank and a mere 250m or so away from the Police Station and in broad daylight! This was in 2011 already. Can't imagine what it must be like nowadays.

Ja grew-up in Herte Street, the street down De Akker, and witnessed many muggings of students walking home at night, but crime did get progressively worse. We always knew never to walk home at night. I also had a few close calls when I was a student. The gangs in cloetesville and kayamandi know where to find laptops and phones for the drug trade.

SHOCKING...SHOCKING...that this is still going on. My husband & I were on holiday in 2022 staying at a wine estate...on returning from a day out, the locks on our suitcases had been cut & valuables were stolen...beyond our horror the wine estate distanced themselves & told us to report it to the Stellenbosch police. What an experience we had...the police told us that this is very normal for Stellenbosch & the surrounding wine routes...the criminal gangs follow tourists from the airport & monitor them all the time...they then told us how BAD the crime is with the students & that Stellenbosch is a 'CRIME HAVEN'....sadly they told us how understaffed they are and cannot manage the crime...which we witnessed that night at the station...VERY VERY SAD that nothing has changed 2 years down the line 😢
