Things really change I would walk from Humarga to Goldfields Res in wee morning hours after doing assignments. Walking from the SS to res alone. Nothing happened. Stellies is not safe at all anymore.
As much as I empathize with the students and parents, I also wonder why this type of story has not been covered for campuses that are equally if not more affected by the same plague, campuses like CPUT and UWC in the Bellville/Belhare area...
You gotta start somewhere - it's not like it's a conspiracy to only give attention to Stellenbosch - they just started with Stellenbosch and if this gets traction it'll become taken seriously and obviously more reports will be done
The lives of majority POC university students are clearly not valued as much as majority white university students, that's why CPUT and UWC ( neighbouring universities pretty much ) were excluded from this coverage- despite us suffering in fear for years and dealing with kidnappings and literal deaths of our fellow students every so often.
UWC next to Belville South and Belhar. They know not to abduct there because the gangsters will come after them. Yep. Even the gangsters love their communities!!
Tell your kid to walk in groups or have campus security accompany them if they HAVE TO go out at night, have situational awareness, don’t flaunt valuables, always let someone know where they are, they have to lock their doors and be respectful but firm especially to people who seem homeless. Avoid dark quiet areas. Just common sense and they’ll be fine.
No township in SA has seen more outreach and upliftment programs than Kayamandi. Hundreds of millions spent over 30 years. ZERO FRUIT FOR DECADES OF EFFORT.
You can spend as much money as you want on certain areas and it won't help if the population there outgrows what you can put in. Kayamandi is notorious for the illegal land grabs on neighboring farms. There is NO town planning due process followed. No services planned. No rates and taxes to keep services going. It's just every man for himself. An impossible situation to manage. On top of all the chaos hundreds and thousands flock there each year.
kayamandi has seen enormous growth the last 20 years. most people are just coming from EC looking for jobs, but there are many bad apples hiding there. gangs have been firmly established

Crime is everywhere whether its in a rich or poor area we as people we should start looking at what the cause of this increase in crime is and how to combat and reduce this.
It’s not safe at all in Stellies . I have survived 3 times already. And the street kids are mostly the culprits and they are very violent..they use knives and bricks when they rob you. What I have noticed after working in Du toit Street @Stellies for 6 years. Campus security and SAPS have gotten less visible. It’s scary and dead quiet in Stellies around 6am and when the sunsets. SAPS is really failing the students shame 😭
That's the main reason why, otherwise they wouldn't be targeted. If you're part of the middle class or rich, just know that you will be targeted by criminals. These days we've gotten to the point where no one is safe.
I am working as a Internal crime investigator and security officer at Northwest-University in Potchefstroom and we facing the same problems that I've just watched. Students should walk together in groups and not expose their valuables off-campus or in public.
Not even to mention how bad the kidnappings, hijackings, and robberies are on the Helshoogte pass/road on the way to Franschhoek (if you’re travelling from Stellies)
this is not about alcohol. This is also about drugs. The high demand for students abusing narcotics attracts the people that provide them. I wish it wasn't true but the police are "tying their hands" as it plays into the countries benefit. White people are not wanted in South Africa. So it's easy to turn a blind eye towards the Nigerians ruining the lives of young "rich" white people.
The university provides free services that students can use . Students can call a number on their student card and request campus security to walk with them to their destination
I walk home on that street nearly daily. Only walk during daylight and after 7pm don't. The university provides free shuttles home every hour from 6pm until 2am. Also students can request campus police escorts home. The best I can say as someone who lived around that street as a student for 2 years is to use these tips and you will be much safer👍. My condolences to the family 🙏
How is it that anyone can think it's safe to walk around after dark anywhere in South Africa? Or to drive to a lonely mountain pass late at night. Totally delusional.
This is extremely bad ………patrol units …. The government needs to do better . Department of Safety and Protection in the Western Cape needs to do better . I am angered and infuriated with all the debauchery things happening in the Stellenbosch town ….this is bad . No man.
Ooo money money money. Not everyone has money. Not everyone is out at night clubbing. Some are out to study or write tests. Uber is not an option for the less fortunate. Parking is also horrible in Stellenbosch so even if you have a car you will probably still walk far. And uber is still to some degree a dangerous thing if you are alone at night
My gosh this sounds horrifying💔 this reminds me of last year, student from bloem here and last year around this time students were getting kidnapped left, right and centre! Tomorrow marks a year of Lesego missing
My friend was abducted 5min away from her house on her way to a nearby tuckshop broad daylight ... She managed to escape and to this day nothing was heard of the police ...
SAPS ignores its responsibilities...student towns all over SA are under siege. Criminals target students because many of them are just beginning to experience independence and may struggle to find their way around towns or cities. Police visibility is needed 24/7 in areas frequented by students.
This happens in the whole country. If you like clubbing and being out late at night, then you are definitely going to come across such situations. This is what it was like when i was at the University of The Free State a few years ago, luckily for me, I am boring so was home before 6pm, and never went clubbing.
I was at Freestate & my weekends were spend bar/ club hopping & I never feared for my life. I knew not to answer my phone at night cause it would be snatched up that was the worst that happen. How quickly things change.
Sad to see Stellenbosch SAPS has been reduced to this. In the 90's it was very different. Stellenbosch started getting dangerous at night a long time ago.
Every single housemate of mine has been mugged. This was last year. I was the only man in the house and, as a first year, was responsible for walking with them. There have been many other incidents since then. The police need to fix this. Campus security is simply not doing their part either.
If I could I'd leave too. I'm saving money to start a new life in a safer country. Although I'll miss this country, but I'm not going to put my life at risk by living here.
This happens daily in the WC in all the townships, one biggest problem we have in the country is alcohol especially from young people, they know its not safe out there but come wknds they go to tarvens, clubs till early morning when they encounter such thugs robing them. But in the townships even during daylight this is a norm
I don’t think it was wise to reveal that the bank could issue a stop order on the funds, especially since the kids were recovered within 10 hours. This information may only serve to make criminals more sophisticated.
There is a strong presence of both police and security in Stellies. Thing is, there is a desperation between the have's and the have not's. Those that feel maliscious towards these apparent spoilt students.
Looking at this you can clearly see the that the culprits are coming from the nearby location called KYAMANDI which house thousands of illegal immigrants
I had a retail store in Stellenbosch and it was broken into and all electronic equipment was stolen. When I made the complaint at the police station, the police officer said to me “ I now have all your details so I can easily blame the theft on you “ . I was so shocked and upset that a police officer would even say something so sick.
Stellenbosch used to be a safe town for students....my kids attended the university.....it is sad what the outside factions have come in and done to destroy this once beautiful town
Please do not let your guard down in South Africa. This is from my experience of living in that country for 6+ years. It's an incredibly beautiful country, but an extremely dangerous one too. The moment you lower your guard, you should be ready to pay with your limb, or life. Police in South Africa? That's the world's biggest joke !!

firstly crimes of all kinds are found in every country throughout the world,so SA is not the exception.Knowing that at night, crimes are committed very often and at every corner lurks danger, then why aren't we more careful. Why do we party and consume alcohol become inebriated most of the time, then set off for our destination.Unfortunately we must look out for ourselves, don't think it won't happen to me or i'm safe because we all know each other.Although everyone should be allowed to do what and when they want and be safe,it does not work like that. There are bad elements out there that would do anything because they are evil and sick.😢
It's true that there's crime everywhere, but in other places you can walk freely at night without a worry. There will be exceptions, but a country can be safe enough for you to not worry about your safety. Our leaders are just not putting in enough effort to make this country a safe place.
As much as i hate to say this but ive told many of my Cape friends for yrs that the vine curtain does not shield you from SA problems and never has and is just a false sense of security they tell each other. While the Cape may have less other problems than the rest of the country, there is no border wall so sooner or later things come to a town near you.
A friend and I took a swing by Aandklas on Friday evening and moved on to De Lapa upon seeing the line. We were both armed and immediately went condition orange 100m from Aandklas because of an inherently suspicious character that began to scope us out. He noticed that we detected him and he moved off. Wise decision on his part. My car was also broken into right outside the law faculty building in October last year during an evening test.
There is no more "normal society" out there. Ordinary people living ordinary lives have now become the target and what is gained by the perpetrators - a cellphone, some money that may last a day, nothing else but the victim is traumatized for months because you never know how these incidents will pan out. It is tragic that society has come to this
Unfortunately these individuals don't seem to comprehend that. I was robbed and it has left a psychological scar. I'm always cautious and on the lookout for certain indicators of a potentially dangerous situation. It's a terrible way to live, but that's just where our country has gotten.
Being a Security is a totally underpaid jobs. Most call police when they see something, instead of helping.. All around Stellenbosch is poverty up you mostly see the innercity..
When you've lived comfortably your whole life, you become desensitised to all of the bad things that happen around you. I never grew up in Stellies, but I had a massive reality check when I was mugged in broad daylight. I hope that helps you understand why he said what he said.
Crime is everywhere. Money and status, should not be associated with area demographics or spike in crime. It should be zero tolerance throughout the country so everyone can walk and feel safe.

My son is currently a student and my daughter is joining next year. This is worrisome. My son told me of two instances in last few weeks where a member of the local community (not a student) frequenting the student centre and uni precincts being very abusive.
Didn't expect this kind of thing to happen around Stellenbosch University campus, always thought it was the safest during my time as a student there
I used to happily walk around Wits campus in the small hours on my own. I NEVER felt unsafe.
SU is basically scraping these things under the rug lately. My sister has been a student for 3 years there and with many different crimes, SU doesn't really do much to prevent it or support the students. I honestly want my sister to go to a different uni at this point. I'm so scared for her and I'll be going there next year too. It terrifies me seeing that they aren't doing much at all
I tell you, the level of lawlessness in South Africa truly knows no bounds.

@@antoniotruter9839 Exactly. That was my immediate thought as well. He didnt have to mention that part at all.
There is big money in crime. Security companies are in demand.
As much as I empathize with the students and parents, I also wonder why this type of story has not been covered for campuses that are equally if not more affected by the same plague, campuses like CPUT and UWC in the Bellville/Belhare area...
CPUT student here that's true.
You gotta start somewhere - it's not like it's a conspiracy to only give attention to Stellenbosch - they just started with Stellenbosch and if this gets traction it'll become taken seriously and obviously more reports will be done
I have seen a story about the University of Pretoria on Carte Blanche in 2023
The lives of majority POC university students are clearly not valued as much as majority white university students, that's why CPUT and UWC ( neighbouring universities pretty much ) were excluded from this coverage- despite us suffering in fear for years and dealing with kidnappings and literal deaths of our fellow students every so often.
UWC next to Belville South and Belhar. They know not to abduct there because the gangsters will come after them. Yep. Even the gangsters love their communities!!
This scares me as i have a child there 😡 we demand lots of street lights and safety.
Really! Is this at any other town too?
Tell your kid to walk in groups or have campus security accompany them if they HAVE TO go out at night, have situational awareness, don’t flaunt valuables, always let someone know where they are, they have to lock their doors and be respectful but firm especially to people who seem homeless. Avoid dark quiet areas. Just common sense and they’ll be fine.
With a lastname like Booth you should have sent your kid to UCT. F off from Maties
Give your child money to pay for an uber, and always take one or 2 friends with them in the uber.
Thats the problem,,,you demand too much
No township in SA has seen more outreach and upliftment programs than Kayamandi. Hundreds of millions spent over 30 years.
ZERO FRUIT FOR DECADES OF EFFORT.
@mixi2090 is an absolutely true statement ..... sad sad reality
Millions spent on ANC refugees
Stellenbosch suffers from the same unemployment issue the rest of the country is facing.
Why is it so dark there in first place it looks scarry from the video.
Lesson for the students. Don’t walk late at night, especially not under the influence of alcohol.
Accountability? For spoilt idiots with zero situational awareness? You are an optimist.
@@cchris5958 a bit harsh just because naivety and being young and dumb goes hand in hand .. even worse people who don't seem like idiots are still at risk of such crime but I get ur point
That is students all over the world. Sad that the best time in our lives is supposed to be spent hiding & scared. Our students also deserve to have a normal student life.
Late after a night out you are not safe ANYWHERE. you have to have your wits about you. Preferably do not be alone, be on your guard. Sad but the reality. I’m from Gauteng and have had bad experiences at all times of day.

One doesn't know until it happens, living in Stellenbosch has been great, but it is definitely still South Africa, this is really bad, and let's not forget the high number of foreign exchange students and Europeans that visit this beautiful Dutch town. @@Zangettsu_ZAand her mom drown up until today this story break my heart 😢
I have to be honest, perhaps its ignorance, but I didn't expect this in Stellenbosch.
Do you think the reason for these abductions is that they perceive the parents and students as being wealthy, thus they are targeted?
That's the main reason why, otherwise they wouldn't be targeted. If you're part of the middle class or rich, just know that you will be targeted by criminals. These days we've gotten to the point where no one is safe.
Yep. And students are more vulnerable and probably more careless (carefree)
Alcohol is a problem everywhere. Students drinking too much hanging around till early mornings. Criminal see them as an easy target.
Not just alcohol. Daylight crime cannot be avoided either.
this is not about alcohol. This is also about drugs. The high demand for students abusing narcotics attracts the people that provide them.
I wish it wasn't true but the police are "tying their hands" as it plays into the countries benefit. White people are not wanted in South Africa. So it's easy to turn a blind eye towards the Nigerians ruining the lives of young "rich" white people.
my daughter was almost abducted outside Rhenish Girls school in broad daylight and police did nothing
Rich town. Poor police work.

You gotta uber or have a designated but parking is a problem. Ideally try and uber in a group
Why in South Africa do you think its safe to walk the streets at midnight. Just get an Uber.
@@anitawillemse8478 Then why not study at home or where you stay if going out late will result in the obvious?

My friend was abducted 5min away from her house on her way to a nearby tuckshop broad daylight ... She managed to escape and to this day nothing was heard of the police ...
What do you expect ? We have an incompetent government and an incompetent SAP and they cannot control crime in SA. Crime is out of control in SA.
SAPS ignores its responsibilities...student towns all over SA are under siege. Criminals target students because many of them are just beginning to experience independence and may struggle to find their way around towns or cities. Police visibility is needed 24/7 in areas frequented by students.
Stellenbosch.still a walk in a park compared to what happens in soweto and Durban!
Stellenbosch started getting dangerous at night a long time ago.
indeed - also have the distinct memory of the 1990s getting steadily worse.
Dis verskriklik. So jammer vir die studente en die ouers. Enige iemand se nagmerrie.
South Africa is ranked fifth in the world for crime
And these incidents were not even in the news!!!!😢
Every single housemate of mine has been mugged. This was last year. I was the only man in the house and, as a first year, was responsible for walking with them. There have been many other incidents since then. The police need to fix this. Campus security is simply not doing their part either.
I permanently left South Africa at the beginning of the year, and I haven't looked back once. This country is a dump.
Okay never come back then 👍🏽
If I could I'd leave too. I'm saving money to start a new life in a safer country. Although I'll miss this country, but I'm not going to put my life at risk by living here.

Not everyone is getting robbed you have too be cautious.
This is terrible. Get the security levels up please. Home town needs to be and stay safe.

I used to sell educational materials to Stellenbosch from a firm on Long Island. They were 1 of 8 clients we had in that country
So this is somehow national news cause it happened in Stellenbosch? This literally happens everyday throughout the country. Unfortunately
@@NgolaNalane disappointing but not surprising that this only gets highlighted when it's wealthy students affected

Please do not let your guard down in South Africa. This is from my experience of living in that country for 6+ years. It's an incredibly beautiful country, but an extremely dangerous one too. The moment you lower your guard, you should be ready to pay with your limb, or life.

True, it's always best to look over your shoulder every now and then.

You can't just put a bunch of cameras on every street, someone needs to watch them.
No going out after dark to stay safe everyone. 🙏🙏🙏
I stayed in Alexander Street 100m away from the Police Station. One day I was walking back from the Engineering Faculty and was harassed by two Tsoti's. Manage to fight them off and threw the one to the ground while the other one ran off. It happened close to Aandklas / Adam Tas Theatre / Taxi Rank and a mere 250m or so away from the Police Station and in broad daylight! This was in 2011 already. Can't imagine what it must be like nowadays.
Policestation now gave security guard that's how bad it has become.
firstly crimes of all kinds are found in every country throughout the world,so SA is not the exception.Knowing that at night, crimes are committed very often and at every corner lurks danger, then why aren't we more careful.
True.
Never appreciated getting declined by a uni this much
Wow, our beautiful South Africa is really turning into a ***hole.😢
Their values aren’t ours.
Juicy money for security cameras huh...hmmm
There is no more "normal society" out there. Ordinary people living ordinary lives have now become the target and what is gained by the perpetrators - a cellphone, some money that may last a day, nothing else but the victim is traumatized for months because you never know how these incidents will pan out. It is tragic that society has come to this
Unfortunately these individuals don't seem to comprehend that. I was robbed and it has left a psychological scar. I'm always cautious and on the lookout for certain indicators of a potentially dangerous situation. It's a terrible way to live, but that's just where our country has gotten.
Plus it was sunny and the people around me watched the whole robbery. You can't even feel safe around people anymore.
South Africa is such a mess!
Taking such risks while young makes memories,
Being a Security is a totally underpaid jobs. Most call police when they see something, instead of helping..
All around Stellenbosch is poverty up you mostly see the innercity..
the third student said he realised that’s “his still very much in South Africa” I’m confused, where did he think he was????? 😂💀👩🏽🦯
