    I've been interested in building clubs for a while now, and these videos have been both entertaining and informational. If nothing else, it's made me appreciate what my local clubmakers actually go through to make our equipment look good and function properly. An underappreciated art.

    Great video . I worked in a golf shop in college and would build clubs similar to what your doing. We would build clubs to be as perfect as could be made. This way the only variable was the person holding the club. The biggest problem was that I had very little time to actually play.

    I have always been a "fill the entire hosel with epoxy" kind of guy, out of fear of one of these sucker's coming loose. I taught myself how to build clubs, so it is really interesting to see a pro do it "the right way". The amount of epoxy you used for 6 clubs is how much I would mix for 1. Looks like I can save some money. Great tip!

    The thing with FLO, If you have a consistent club and don't find the middle of the face, it's a swing thing. If you have an inconsistent club and can't find the middle, you can go about finding fault in the swing, but still have the variable of an inconsistent club.

    I found a key chain laser pointer at office max. I took the chain off and put two adhesive cable holders together as the clamp. I stuck them together in opposite directions. As added help since it is over five yrs old I place a piece of masking tape over the button to help keep it on.
    For a manufactured laser FLO I would check out club scout. The owner machines a holder and provides a laser specifically for it.

      I'm curious about where and how you're attaching the laser for FLO. Using a device like the one from GolfMechanix, you attach that at the tip of the club, while you're attaching your laser mid-shaft. It seems like your method would result in a much "tighter" pattern.

    Hi Jim,
    So just to be clear, when you spine the shaft, the hard point the “spine”, will come to the top in your spine finder. You mark that and it is positioned in the clubhead at the 12 o’clock position to assist in flo’ing the club. Finding the spine merely assists in flo’ing the club. You adjust the position of the shaft in the head until you get a flat line oscillation, but that will still generally mean that the spine of the shaft will still be in the 12 o’clock position - give or take a few degrees.
    I have read a lot about spine alignment and there are a lot of differing opinions on whether to align the spine at 12 o’clock (as you do) 9 or 3 o’clock. I am going with 12 o’clock as you suggest, but as long as you are consistent across the set it should be fine.
    Love your videos by the way.
    Regards
    Pete

    Jim, I believe your preferred spine position to begin floing is 12 o'clock. I see other you tubers who use 9 o'clock. My thinking is that 12 o'clock reduces shaft droop. Also, at 9 o'clock, when the shaft flexes forward towards the bottom of the foreswing, the weight of the head forcing the shaft to move into the stiffest plane of the shaft may cause the shaft to deflect off of plane. What is your thought? Bob from Logansport.

    The chart that you use, is it a "standard" one? Where can we get one of those?
    What is the number of the sand belt witch you think is better to use in steel shaft prep?
    Do you think it is important to clean the tip and the hosel with acetone before gluing? I always do but if i would be sure that it would be a step that i can skip, it would be one less task and less time for each assembling...

    First of all love your video. You can see you truly love your job. My question was, in the little research I've done on spining, and flo or puring, there is really only one way to get the best flo and you put the shaft in the head with the hardest most consistent side of the shaft facing target. I got confused when you started flipping it different ways and when installing heads it didnt look like you were exactly installing it to the exact position it needed to be for best consistency. Sorry for nit picking.

    • @McGolf
      @McGolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Matthew J the best position for FLO is certainly a debate among Clubmakers. Particularly when talking to the kick of the shaft. In doing your research I am sure you found where it is the opinion of some that FLO doesn’t even work. Other will say that it totally influences the performance of the shaft. What you may not have found is that if the club is FLOing in the 12 o’clock position where I put it for consistency that it also FLOs in the path 90 degrees to the 12 o’clock position. The moving of the head is not a mistake, it is manipulating the club to find the FLO as spine finding is not exact either.

    Question: Why would you use a spine finder to find the spine if you are going to flow the shaft? Since the flow may indicate you might have to rotate the shaft up to 90 degrees off of the spine up position. Why not flow only until the flatline oscillation is straight up and down, what ever it takes?

  • @bodynfocus

  • @johnprevite6673
    @johnprevite6673 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    FYI To properly FLO any shaft you have to let it bounce. You can't just stop it after one or two passes. You'd be surprised what you see. The oscillation on a shaft can be so bad it can change directions

    • @McGolf
      @McGolf  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      John, I have found that if it is going to change direction, and some have, it will be bad in the being too.

    • @johnprevite6673
      @johnprevite6673 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What if you held it too high or too low when you bounced it, in your case you go straight up n down so what if you were off to the left a little bit vice versa. you don't know if u bounce it perfect straight up n down. It will correct itself and flatline if it's FLO'd properly

    I am curious about the head weights. You frequency the first shaft with head, get the cut measure, etc. The next club you step 1/2" but doesn't the head weight factor in frequency? The weight of heads can vary, not always consistently.

    Hey Jim - Great video's and tutorials, I've watched heaps. A few daft questions.... How long are the shafts before you start? Like you chopped 2.5 inches off the shaft and some more off the butt. Is there ever an occasion when to get the right numbers you're getting close chopping too much off?

    • @michaelmaness2646
      @michaelmaness2646 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These are .370 parallel shafts. They all come the same length from the manufacturer. In order to adjust the flex, he must measure the frequency, check said frequency on the recommended chart and either trim from the butt end to soften the flex, or trim from the tip end to strengthen the flex. Once trimmed, he goes back to the FLO to see if his trimming has matched the recommended frequency for said flex. No shaft is created equal, as you can see in the video. Blindly trimming shafts based on the manufacturer's recommended trimming may not be as accurate as you think. Taper-tip shafts are manufactured to the correct length and flex for each club so it is important that the correct shaft is fitted to the corresponding club. To change playing characteristics on a tapered shaft, you would either change flex all together, or look at hard-stepping/soft-stepping the shafts. Hope this helps.

    How much do you worry about swing weights when you are doing a frequency matched build? The reason I ask is that when I use Golf Pride grips the weights can be a bit all over the place from a tolerance perspective so any of the work that I do to get a 7 gram spread with the club heads and shaft weights might need to be compensated for in that scenario.

      Daniel the Drill chuck is a device used when doing a lot of shafts at one time and when you are not finding the spine. The chuck is faster and a bit more pricy. The laser use was found in office max as a key chain laser. It is used because it fit the cable holders I put together to hold the laser to the shaft

    I disagree. The flat line needs to face forward for consistent ball striking

      brucenoneyabusness that is a popular thought and one normally applied when looking to adjust the kick of the club however in keeping the with the bend of the shaft the 12 o’clock is better for consistency

    I'm sorry but this is overkill - 95% of golfers can't even hit a ball and this is not advantageous to any of them. People and Pros were playing Golf perfectly fine long before all this "extra" science came on the scene

      walks tall I’d disagree, pros in the day would go to buckets of same iron and hit the until they performed like they wanted, then move to the next iron and so on. Turns out the pros have the touch and other smarted than me figured out how to translate that into some that that can help others. The jury is still out on spine and FLO, some don’t have the touch as you say and other can tell. Bottom line it makes for a consistent club that can only help
