    Sharp GF 8080E brilliant radio-from 1977-I remember owning one of these,nice to look inside,brilliant all-metal cassette flywheel on the cassette mechanism,a fat cry from the plastic flywheels,on the modern cassette decks !!

      Thanks for watching. I'm glad it bought back some fond memories! This is genuinely so well built - I love it. And you're right - the units of that era really were made properly. Just wonderful craftsmanship, even for mass-produced items. I've got loads more to work on, so hopefully you'll stay tuned 😁👍

      Thanks for watching. I work on a couple of these per month, and they definitely get quicker and easier to work on with practice. They are lovely units. Solid, with great radios. They can be prone to worn idler tyres, so check the FF and RW before buying. I made a shorter and more direct video on the 8080 belt change here - worth a look. Thanks again!

    Thank you for your very quick response, I have found the lugs now, tricky as you say, attached OK but now due to plastic fatigue where the 2 pivot are located under the screws have broken and slide out of place, creating a workaround with epoxy/metal support. Once again thanks for your fast response. The unit is basically up and running now, more fatigue on rear case, but everything running.

      Great to hear you got it running! Epoxy is great - it will be a permanent repair, I'm sure. I use it to mend snapped screw studs etc too. I hope you enjoy it now that you can use it properly! Thanks again for getting in touch 👍

      These are very solid units. I've probably worked on around 10 over the past year. Lovely stereos. Very solid and great sounding - especially for their size! Thanks for watching 👍

    Hello and why is there no sound after turning it on, only slight noise? are these potentiometers?Regards...

    • @retro_restos
      @retro_restos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello,
      It could be anything really. Maybe a dirty spot in a potentiometer or a poor switch contact. Sometimes an old capacitor popping or not filtering as well. Best to clean the pots and switches and go from there. Thanks for watching 👍

    Hi
    Just watched your super video, my belt was naff stretched like yours, done everything before watching your video, and you did everything I did, BUT my door mech had 2 springs detached and saved in the battery comp, the door is loose and comes out easy, could not quite see where they are attached to in your video, any advise please.

    • @retro_restos
      @retro_restos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for watching. Some people do seem to remove the springs, although there's usually no real need to. I saw one on ebay a couple of weeks ago with the seller unable to re-attach the door - he asked me the same question. The springs go one each side of the cassette door, and locate onto the tabs on the cassette door housing on the unit faceplate. You need to be extremely adept with tweezers to re-attach them from the front, but more likely need to gut it to get to it from 'behind.' as this may be less frustrating! Best of luck!

    I just found the same model of radio on its way to the landfill: luckily the one in our city picks up the interesting stuff to sell for cheap. Despite the back cover being cracked, I was surprised to find the only issue with it was the volume dropping due to gunk in the sleep/radio/tape-selector. Opened the unit with your video for guidance, gave the switches a blast of contact cleaner and hey presto, it works!
    I also replaced the cracked main belt, which I think was around 239 mm string length, so I'm guessing around 7.6 cm inner circumferance. The 7.1 cm belt I got from the local shop was a tad too small but still works. I'm still looking into how to get a bluetooth connected to this one, whether to get a bluetooth-casette adapter or get an AUX for the Tape in 5-din socket. Any suggestions?
    BTW, I noticed that the ABS plastic for the counter is the type that fades into a light gray in time. A trick I learned for fading car bumpers is to give it a wipedown, followed by some low heat from a heat gun, being careful not to warp the plastic. This raises the oils in the plastic and if its waxed afterwards, it'll keep its colour for a bit longer.

      Hi, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Very solid units, these - so I'm glad you saved one! The heat trick in the plastic is always a useful last resort - I the trick is not to go crazy with the heat, as I'm sure you know.
      With regard to the bluetooth, I think I'd be more inclined to tap something into the aux in via a mini jack or RCA (whichever the BT unit output has) to DIN. That way, it will be non-invasive. You could possibly do this internally picking up the L & R audio pins (and ground where required) on the inboard side - but it would be more permanent. I guess it depends whether you wish to continue using the cassette. If not, the BT git may allow you to tap into the function swich to enable BT option to be turned on there, with output wired into the pre or power amp stages (depending on the kit). Personally, I'd go for an external unit in the first instance. Thanks again!

    Hi, i found one of these in the loft of the house and my play -record and fast-forward/rewind buttons will not press down, any ideas? Many thanks

    • @retro_restos
      @retro_restos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for watching. This is a classic symptom of a stored unit - hardened grease. I've just done one with the same issues today actually. The proper remedy is to strip it down, remove the mechanism and dissolve out the old grease. Re-lubricate the mechanism and sliders, plus renew the belts while you are there (if it got to the 'stiff controls' stage, you can bet it has never actually been serviced. You can cheat by gently spraying or running a few drops of denatured alcohol onto the key sliders, but this will not loosen up the internals, and you risk contaminating the reel clutches - so be careful. Lovely units though, so well worth restoring.

      @@retro_restos Hello, many thanks for the heads up, yes that got all the buttons working; I suspect I need a new belt though as when I press the play button the all i get is a clicking noise every 2 or 3 seconds where it seems like it's trying to turn but not able.

    • @retro_restos
      @retro_restos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Towerwatson525 I replace the belts on all decks as a matter of course, as less than 1% I work on have ever been serviced. Yours will likely need them too. Oddly enough, I took delivery of another GF-8080 yesterday, and that one has a gummed up mechanism too! With regard to the auto-stop; that will most likely be the take up reel not turning (the machine thinks the tape has stopped). Again, belts and sticking mech internals. Thanks again

      @@retro_restos Thank you again for the help. one last thing when i hit effect the tape door felt loose and lifted out , it has both springs attached but struggling to get them back on anything to get the door back on. Many thanks

      @retro_restos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Towerwatson525 is yours the one on ebay with the instruction book? If so, the springs ( which are still attached to the back of the cassette door) hook over the little grey plastic tabs on the main unit housing. Extremely easy to get back on from the back with the deck out - but a little more tricky from the front - tweezers will be your friend!

    I have a very poor condition one from an ebay electronics waste reseller only cost 99p plus postage but no way near as nice as this i took it apart to look at the belts and reasembked it and now i no longer have fm not sure why i need to kook at it again sometime .

      These are beautifully made machines. I have a few in stunning condition. Although one has a gummed up mech through standing for years. There are some absolute horrors on eBay, but fixing them up is half the fun. Maybe the switch linkage isn't correctly seated? Or is it switching but not receiving? Antenna hooked back up ok?

      Some models of this time had a lot more - but this was on the transitional period with ICs and more modern PCBs.
