I reckon the captaincy destroyed Amla as a test batsman. He had 21 test tons at age 31 but only added another 7 in the following 5 years including only 4 in the two years he was test captain. By contrast, never being made captain of the one day side, 15 of his 27 one day tons came after early 2014, the moment in time when he embarked on his two year (not particularly successful) stint as test captain.
Sa 2018, Virat took bold decision to drop Rahane and play Rohit after Rahane scored 17 runs in 6 innings at home. India lost 2 tosses and both games and he reverted back to Rahane who scored 48 in 3rd innings of 3rd test and play a role to help India win the test match. Since then Rahane has struggled in Test cricket but Kohli and team management have never dropped Rahane from the playing XI forget dropping from the squad and sending him to play domestic or county cricket. Eng 2018, Kohli dropped Pujara from playing XI for 1st test to accommodate KL Rahul at No.3.
