    Albania was one of the most closed off & poor countries of the Warsaw Pact during the Cold War. It's great that it has turned around, and is thriving!

    I totally agree! I spent some time in Tirana in September and loved it. I also had no idea about what Albania would be like, but I could tell it's a place that is up and coming. My first impression coming into the airport was, like you said, going through immigration by just scanning your passport. Only place I traveled all over Europe that was that convenient. The ability for Americans to stay for 12 months is just amazing. The variety of modern architecture was surprising. You can tell they are wanting the city to be a modern, eclectic place that is quite different from other capital cities in the region. Overall, Tirana seems like this cool, quirky place that you kind of want to keep to yourself, but you can't help but tell everyone about it. Tirana and Albania are still somewhat undiscovered, hidden gems, but I don't think they will remain that way for long.

      That’s so great to hear! I’m glad you loved Tirana as much as we did. It really is fascinating how convenient the airport process is and the length of stay for Americans is a big plus. I agree about the modern architecture-it really gives the city a unique vibe. It feels like a place that’s embracing its identity while still being a hidden gem.

    Bus station is new. That sounds like a great improvement! Did you arrive from the North or the South? South busses used to gather outside the city in a field. Just a big field. The busses from the North was near central downtown.
    The sad news is it's a very small country and will possibly get over run with tourists.

    • @HoboVentures
      @HoboVentures  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      We arrived at the Tirana bus terminal next to the East Gate Mall. That’s a good point. It’s always a balancing act with small countries-while tourism can bring great benefits, it can also overwhelm places if not managed carefully. Hopefully, they’ll find ways to preserve what makes it special!

    About new architecture, there is a new development of buildings in Tirana starting construction called “Hora Vertikale”, a stacked-cube style residential building, designed by, I believe, a Portuguese architectural firm, should be really interesting to walk by, drive by, live. The question that no one asks or answers is if as an American you spend the one year visa in Albainia and leave, how soon can you come back for another year?

    • @HoboVentures
      @HoboVentures  หลายเดือนก่อน

      As an American, after using the one-year visa-free stay in Albania, you generally need to leave for at least 90 days before you can return for another extended stay. However, this can vary, and it's best to check with Albanian immigration or your local embassy for the most current requirements, as rules can change.

    Did you guys make it to the beach? Another blogger had reported that around Saranda the beach chairs are operated by a bunch of mafia guys, and if you’re not willing to pay their high prices they make you leave the beach. They tell you that you can’t sit on a towel in the sand, you must rent a chair! Sounds a little questionable, but this is what was reported.

    • @HoboVentures

      We made it to Saranda, and the video will be out soon! We joined a 7-island tour and rented 2 beach chair and umbrella for €10 on one of the beaches. I noticed some people just sitting on their towels without being asked to pay or leave.
