  • This video will give you a good overview of what to expect from a well-run tire hammer build class. In this particular class 32 Hammers were built in 2.5 days. These hammers have 70lb rams, 1.5hp motors and 515lb anvils. This Clay Spencer Tire hammer workshop was held in October 2020 at the Chappapeela Crafts School in Robert, Louisiana. All parts for the hammers were supplied by Curtis Herrmann from Oklahoma. For info on future classes at this location please visit www.chappapeelacrafts.com/
For more information on these tire hammers, check out the Tire Hammer page on my website at www.derekmelton.com/ and Clay Spencer's page tirehammer.org/tirehammer_webs...

40+ years as a pipefitter working with metals and I've never done anything that can be called blacksmithing, but it's always fascinated me. I'm really impressed.., and that's coming from someone nicknamed 'Inspector Gadget' because I'm always building stuff (gadgets) I'd give my pension to be younger and a part of this team!

I see Clay has updated his hammer design. At our hammer build (2017) we poured melted led into the hammer instead of having a solid steel hammer. I think our hammers were rated at 70 lbs. The build I participated in was a 2 & 1/2 days also. However, several weeks prior, the steel was ordered and tons (literally) of it had to be cut to size for numerous different parts. I'm not complaining, its was fun but there is so much work that takes places before the build actually begins. Clay was there on the last day to fine tune each machine and give his okey okedoky. We each got an announcement poster advertising the build and I asked Clay to sign mine, which he graciously did. I had it laminated and it now hangs in my shop.

I can reply as I got the latest versions of the plan (to produce tire hammer in france). Solid hammer is for heavier hammer and requires larger anvil. Some other design points have changed but plans still contain the two versions.

Cool, I would have enjoyed that class. I'm a 76 year old retired carpenter and now live in a senior retirement apartment community in Petaluma CA. I don't think my neighbors would appreciate a new found joy of learning and using a tire hammer in this community. I'm not too keen on some aspects of social media but give credit where do like TH-cam opening up the world of craftsmanship and the "how to" to the DIY.

Im curious as to how many of these guys didnt think ahead and dont have a truck nor anything at home to off load it. Just the post was over 500lbs. So you looking at 700 give or take all done. Guy driving the little compact tercel is like jeez I gotta rent a U Haul and a bloody forklift. OMG No a Crane I cant get into the back yard because of the privacy fence. It had to be true of at least one of them. A guy up in Va. Built this beautiful Cabin Catamaran. 4 years of building and when he was done. He neglected to realize. That not only did the whole front of his garage had to be taken apart. Due to the support structure Half of the front of his kitchen wall had to be taken down because of the solid laminated support beam. It cost him sooo much tear down and rebuild. Just to get it out of the house
