I too built a slightly modified version of this tire hammer. I used about a week of my summer vacation building a variety of tools that I’m very pleased with…but I am definitely going to add the tapering tool (or two) that you showed to my collection. Thanks for the video!
Lovely hammer. I built a spring helve tire hammer awhile back. Not quite as controllable as yours but plenty good enough. You've inspired me to get on with tooling and dies for it. Well done!!!😊
Gary very nice job. Thanks so much sir. Very helpful and definitely useful video explaining those great dies sir. Hopefully you will get great use out of them for many years to come my friend. Can't wait to see more updates an projects and many more videos soon sir. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Keep Forge lit. Keep Making. God bless.
Great job on your tooling. I need to make a bunch more for mine this winter for building tongs. I'm still in love with the adjustable head on yours - I wish I would have known about that before I built mine. Thanks for the great video, keep them coming.
Love the videos, Gary! Could you show the height adjustment setup in more detail, or shoot me the info on where to get a layout for it? Thanks for all you do!
There are no plans as such, I just guessed it from Dave Preston’s facebook post. I am waiting for a new camera to arrive, when it gets here I will do a more in-depth walk around as you’re not the first to ask, it will be a good excuse to try it out.
with the big top you plonked on first, you could put a couple of screw in studs on the upright but make the big top a bayonet fit like a light bulb, that way if you swapping between tops its just a twist on / off rather than a set of screws watching the vid, might work for the other top tools if you add the same collar? with the camera are you using a single focus box or multi, the multi box will focus on anything it wants to that has a contrast ie a brick wall behind the subject, if you use a single focus box and leave it in the center of the camera you'll have a better chance of targeting the subject nice set of tools so far, best of all its going to keep you forging longer in life due to the less fatigue on your arms and shoulders, great vid Gary
@@garyhuston yeah, panel beater by trade, spent 20 years of that fixing london black cabs, pretty much old school stuff on the old fairways, had to think outside the box on some of the "quick, its got to go back out in 5 mins" jobs lol
Great tooling. I think I'm sold on the idea of making one of these, but I'll have to wait until I move workshop so I can make a proper foundation. The tapering die and holder you made is great, so easy to make a bunch of different angles and shapes to fit that holder. Are the plans for the hammer still available online somewhere? I found a thing saying to contact clay spencer with a phone number and address, is that it?
@@sedulousdabbler5468 No magnets, I just made them from copper pipe. one is from 6mm and one from 10mm just flattened with a hammer! Heat them until cherry red and quench to make them soft. They then bend easily to the contours of your wrist.
Unfortunately not as the die sits over where the holes would go. I guess i could cut the ends off but i don’t think there would be much benefit in the long run.
@@kansasprairieforge2918 that’s the ones! I used them as a guide rather than the law. I made all the bits I could to the plans because we know it works then modified the head. I also made the ram 2” longer.
Air pressure definitely makes a difference in the controllability. Too low of pressure and the control gets “squishy” and slow. Too high of pressure and the control goes from just moving to full power without much in between.
Lovely bit of kit. You look like a happy chap.
I am!
What a superb tool you've created.
Nice followup on this tooling for your power hammer. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week 😎
Thank you.
BRILLIANT! can't wait to see you do other job's.

Your shop is really beutiful, with those old brick walls. Ande the tire hammer is great! Greetings from Brazil!

I haven’t used the hammer lots but even so it’s proven very useful to have it adjustable.
Your work is always impress.👍👍
Thank you very much!
Looks awesome Gary one of these are on my list
It’s one of the best tools I have ever made, it’s an awesome thing.
Goodness, I like you videos, so interesting. Love the “focus you fffff???” Comments. Pleased you are pleased with the hammer. So jealous.
Oh thank you!
Congrats!
Nice machine and tooling, Gary! Hope you get a lot of years out of it!
I hope so too

I was on to Kens custom Ironworks to do the course and get my hammer shipped over to Scotland. Yours looks just fine too Thanks for your video..
Glad to help
Fantastic brilliant vid 👍
Thanks
That will save your joints and speed up your works. Congratulations.

My my, you have quite an insight! Quite a good idea, as for the camera it’s so old I don’t think it has an option of multi or single box!😫😫

Very nice I might have to invest in one
You should!
I like your hammer. I need to build one of my own. I’d like more information on yours if you have more to share
Check out my other hammer videos
Your hammer is amazing. Are plans available?
It’s based on the plans by Clay Spencer which can be bought directly from him, I then modified it with the adjustable head.
Gary. Ive never seen a tire hammer with an adjustable head. I build hammers and id like to made that alteration on [ne for my shop.
Go for it, you won’t regret it!
Great video Now I want to build one of my own. Did toy design this one or are there plans?

Do you have any plans to make a beading spring die for a tire hammer, love the tire hammer

Best thing I have ever made. Wish I had done it years ago! Yes, send $30 to clay spencer and he will email you a copy.
@@garyhuston fantastic, thanks. They look surprisingly good for a diy job. I dont think id ever need anything bigger
Fantastic job.
Unrelated but, do you get benefit from your copper bracelet?
Yes I do!

I’m thinking of giving one a try as a builder. Does it have magnets in?

With the die you wish you'd made the other way can you not just add 2 more bolt holes in the other direction?
Unfortunately not as the die sits over where the holes would go. I guess i could cut the ends off but i don’t think there would be much benefit in the long run.
Hi is there any downloadable plans cheers
I downloaded the Clay Spenser plans then just made it up as I went along for the sliding head.
Got any plans for that hammer Gary

Hello Gary. Do you or anyone reading know if the air pressure in the tire matters? I have a tire hammer but i havent played around with air pressure.
I’m told it does make a difference but what difference i have no idea. I’ve never played around with it.
@@garyhuston do you have a "hard" tire or quite loose? Yours look amazing with the adjusrable head. Thanks Gary.
