It burns me up inside that although I’m a native born Dominican who often times travels back home, when vendors somehow detect that I live outside the country, the prices significantly jumps, sometimes even doubles. I don’t really know how they are able to pick up on it but it gets frustrating and can’t stand it. I try really hard to hide it but I get caught every time as if I’m doing something wrong. This should not happen to me or anyone, much less having to prove my ancestry just to be treated fairly. We need to educate our people to stop with the dishonest short term predator mentality. It’s not about making a sale for one day it is creating a customer for life. They need to understand that a long term strategy is more important for a stable and secure economic future.
I think DR is such a contrasting mix of experiences... there are people who try to take advantage, then there are people who have so much less and yet will give you everything they have. Soy del Cibao, La Vega, so maybe it's somewhat different? But I've traveled all over the Caribbean, Central and South America and see the same type of situations play out over and over again. Good and bad people everywhere.
@@FragrantFindingsThe Cibaenos are a different breed. I’m from Santiago so I know what you mean I really have not encountered that type of behavior in that region of the country. It is more common in tourism areas, and as you get closer to the capital city of Santo Domingo. Nonetheless I totally agree with you.
You are 100 percent correct. Shortly after moving here, I quickly learned the prices of everything and many times you can always ask for lower price… fortunately I had a Dominican friend with me always in the early months…
another scam is when you order uber, if pay with your credit card, drivers will accept the ride then take a long time and wait for you to cancel. Always choose efectivo, just to be careful. drivers dont want to get paid through credit cards or bank accounts.
I was taking an Uber from boca chicha to Santo Domingo (Malecon). The cost was around $20 but the driver told me I had to pay him $30 in cash. I didn’t have $30 in cash so he refused to take me
Great advice, I almost got scammed when going to get document at a government office. Outside there are still shady persons (aka bucones) that will tell you that the line is very long inside and that for a fee they will get what ever document you need. Never trust these people, alway go in the offices and get your documents personally.
Another scam which happens even in the upper scale nightclubs is the bartender/waiter claims that you give him a smaller bill when in fact you give him a large bill. In order to prevent this, always confirm when handing them a bill, I do not recommend handing them your credit card either and allowing them to take your CC out of your sight. Always have enough change, in one nightclub, the waiter did not want to return my change, I was not going to allow him to keep a 40% tip on top of all the other charges. "They would try you" 😂

I got scammed by a walking tour guy in the ZC, but it was only for 1000 pesos. He needs it more than me. This was about 3 months ago. Never had a problem with Uber in Boca Chica or in San Isidro or Santo Domingo. But was scammed by a farmacia in Boca Chica when I let my credit card out of my sight. Never again, although I disputed the charge and it was reversed.

Es triste cómo estamos perdiendo el turismo en nuestro país, ya que en el mundo entero se sabe de todos estos scams y que todos te quieren sacar dinero. Me da tanta pena, porqué soy Dominicana
The Uber one...😡 When I order an Uber from the airport. they would message me that they would only pick me up if I had cash. So I would get charged via my c.c and cash if not, they would wait 15 min and claim I was never at the location and I'll still get charged ( a small fee)
I gotten scammed one time in juan dolio Dominican Republic when you go to the beach you get charge a fee for parking and if you buy food they dont charge you fot the table, it turns out I got overcharged for a plate of food for 4 people plus the table after I was told they wouldn't charge me for it. Also on the menu the prices wont show, just the type of food available, if you don't ask first then be ready to get scammed. Please chek the bill too because sometime they add stuff you did not ordered or charge you more then what the menu shows.
I live in the U.S. Never been to the Dominican Republic, and today I got a fraudulent charge on my card from Hidraulica y Servicios Nuñez, SRL. Thankfully my bank notified me of the fraud activity and actions were immediately taken.

Boca Chica is the worst place to dine out… always ask for the cost of the alcohol and beer, and keep the menu with the prices until your check arrives…
A lot of those people they scam, have good jobs back home in their country, so they go back telling friends, family and coworker's, so you're not scamming one man you're scamming people that have never visited the country, and they also scratch Dominican off the list, because word of mouth travels fast, and with global warming and hurricanes dropping, they'll need that tourist money to rebuild ,so sometimes you can out smart yourself, it's sad to see them run their money away 😮
