- Annoyed clients of hair stylists are fed up with rules that have become the "new norm" in the Black hair stylist's community. A lot of these unhappy customers are done patronizing and want to send these stylists back to their 9-5 jobs.

Back in the day, even if you washed your hair, the stylist would wash it again. It's unsanitary for them to use their tools in your hair that they dont know whether or not was washed properly.
Amen
Yes!

@Gothitwiththemmmmmmm yes!!! They were not just 'stylist'....only caring about styling your hair...but beauticians...caring for your scalp health.. healthy hair strands ...and styling
Absolutely true!
I'm also tired of spending 6 to 8 hours in a salon as though I work there. Stop over- booking and finish your clients head before moving to the next. Rude and Unprofessional!
Please and thank you!
no fr i had that happen one time and then while she was doing my hair she was stopping to do other people's hair. like bitch are you serious? the price was cheap so i let it slide but i wont be coming back. ever.
my 2nd year in college in 1988, i did my last tenure at a blk beauty salon by feeling like i worked there. i’m 54 now. I settled in on doing my own hair and keeping it healthy. I wear wigs 100% now. The Dominicans braid the hell outta some hair in 4 hrs max for my dtr. I can’t ever imagine sitting in them chairs again at AA hair salons.
Ugh yes I started coloring my hair at home because it was ridiculous that I was there for 4 hours. She would do other people in between my service, ok when the color is just sitting on me but after the rinse too? Nah. Bye
Yup, I do my own bc when I was a client, my whole Saturday was sitting and waiting before, during and after to just be done. After my hair was dry and cut, I never got any style bc I didn’t want to be there any longer.
I’m the 3rd lady. I do everything myself because I don’t have the time or the patience for the B.S. These new age stylist have the audacity 😒
Same! I definitely have been doing things myself. That’s why I tune into your channel so I can learn to beat my face! lol
😂😂🥰🥰
Same here
❤
Same and it’s been going on for 15 years. TH-cam University has really done me good. Makeup, hair and nails. I’ve learned to just do it myself. So much more peaceful. 😌
I’m so ready for the state board to go back to doing what they used to do:
FORCE the hairstylists & barbers to get their license, BEFORE they can provide ANY TYPE of hair service!! That includes both shampooing AND braiding!
I have a friend who owns a salon (he's a master barber and beautician) and he won't let anyone come in who isn't licensed. Georgia has little to no regulation on this so HE said no under qualified stylists will ruin his shop's reputation.
The first salon I worked in was only because I was licensed. I didn't know at the time. Until State Board came in and she had me take the place of another "stylist ". Turned out she wasn't licensed and the owned didn't want to get in trouble. I walked out the same day, and never went back.
Well in my state it's inforced
@@monejohn9973 Good for you, girl. We're obviously talking about the states where it's not, though.
That’s what I was thinking…I remember when the state boards started cracking down on unlicensed stylists… they gotta get back to that
Back IN the day, they had assistants, GET ONE.
💯💯👏🏾
And hair models , that’s part of the business
Or shampoo girls
It seems a big problem is 'braiders' calling themselves 'stylists'. If you can only braid permed hair don't call yourself a stylist. And why would someone need to pay $500 just for braids? Y'all crazy!
Simple, cause they can’t do the shit themselves. The same reason you’ll pay someone hundreds to press your hair…
@@shaunajones3244not everyone can charge that 500 gor braids is crazy when Africans charge me no more than 250
I would NEVER! That's pure insanity. I firmly believe in doing my own hair 💁🏾♀️
@@shaunajones3244 see that’s the current issue. We would rather go to TH-cam University than y’all unlicensed folks hundreds of dollars. And as a result these “stylists” are losing their careers
No braider is doing only permed hair. And if I’m gonna stand behind your head for 12 hours….yes I am charging that price. If I’m providing the hair…yes I am charging that price plus some
The girl who said she’s “just a braider” admitted her ignorance but also shouldn’t be in nobody hair since she knows literally nothing about hair. To want to be in someone’s hair and not know textbook knowledge about hair is inexcusable.
But as she says: she braids! That’s it. She isn’t promising anything but braids…. I can appreciate why she won’t do services she isnt skilled for, leaves clients hair worse off or delays time in the chair to an u comfortable degree for the client and themself.
@@TheBreechie I thought this was about stylists who charge a lot. I don't expect an exclusive braider to wash my hair.
@@TheBreechieyou should still be trained as a braider. Being uneducated on hair even as a braider you could be causing damage or working with damaged hair increasing the damage already done. An educated hair professional will see the damage, direct them to products or a style that will not create more issues or help rehab the hair and/or advise them what steps they should be doing if braiding is going to cause more harm. So even braiding you need some education.
Respectfully, In most states braiders don’t have to be licensed and are not required to shampoo hair.
That's a stretch. It's actually the other way around. Being a licensed cosmetologist doesn't make you a good braider. I had a full license, and a natural hair license. Never the two should mix..ijs
I'm so glad I found a cosmetologist who actually knows the science of hair. She charges $85 for a silk press and uses the best products to seal in moisture. She cares about the health of your hair and takes her time. I hate that real licensed cosmetologists and hair stylists are being overshadowed by braiders who don't have any licensing or formal training.
Really? Which city 🏙️ is your cosmetologist in?
@@phalynwilliams4119 Chicago southern suburbs
85 honestly is just want the standard price should be.
Are you within 300 miles of Delaware?
And those braiders do not care about the health of your hair! Irritating your scalp with cheap pomades, rough combing, ripping all your edges out. I swear by the time I take the braids out I’ve lost a fourth of my hair smh never again! I’m back to doing my own hair.
Did y’all see that in New York ALL cosmetologist will be required to learn how to do textured hair. Black stylist bout to get another hit! Once other races learn to do textured hair that monopoly in our hair is over.
Exactly they going to get mad when you go to Rebecca oh well
Exactly! 💯
Other races don't want to do our hair.
@@younggiftedandblack7634 not true. My stylist is Caucasian with mixed kids and she has taken very good care of my hair. She’s on time and her prices are fair. She’s my cousin in law so yeah that’s not true.
@younggiftedandblack7634 that's not true lol
I'm so blessed to have found an old-school stylist. She's been licensed for 30 years. She does the latest styles for more than reasonable prices. I see her once a week; I never touch my own hair. Ain't God good!
Looking for an old school hair stylist. Is she in Atlanta?
Can’t wait to be done with school so I can afford to do this
I felt a decline coming with hairstylist, muas, nail techs etc. and I’m here for it! I’m fed up with the lack of customer service and blatant disrespect. Further more, these hairstylists are charging their mortgage for “luxury service”. Honey I want to pay for a service not fund your lifestyle.
Mhm. Every other female I talk to learned how to do most of those things herself to get away from the price and bad service. I rarely ever get in someone’s chair, I’m talking like once every 1-3yrs, and I regret it almost every time. When I learn how to braid and melt it’s over 😂
These overpriced barbers are next 50 60 100 dollars for basic haircuts
I used to do makeup and I charged mostly for products, depending on the clients budget I'd mix and match brand names with drugstore and even taught my costumers how to take care of their skin and what makeup to use on the day to day all that under 100 usd....😅
@@Jnicks01 my barber still charges $15 for kids & $20 for adults.
I’m seeing a lot of natural hair TH-camrs coming back and makeup artists tutorials. There’s a bigger shift coming
‘I was not trained to washed hair…’ AND THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM BABY!! That is not a valid excuse 😭 you shouldn’t be charging for beauty services when you’re not licensed that is actually crazy like 😭😭
She sounds crazy naming all that stuff u do. Take me back the the 90 s please.
Yes exactly! How you don’t know how to wash hair? Don’t you wash your own hair? That’s crazy you don’t know how to rub in shampoo rinse rub in conditioner and rinse? So that tells me your own head is dirty. Wtf?
How are you not seeking out the most BASIC thing you must do are a hairstylist? Even if you weren't provided the materials in school, I'd immediately seek out a local hair place and ask if I could be allowed to observe and learn.
But then they charge you like they are washing and blow drying lol
If they don't want to wash hair, that's fine. But hire yourself a shampoo person. And pay them with some of that big money that you are charging your clients.
Can we talk about attitude. I’m so sick of dealing with hairstylist with nasty attitudes. That’s why I stop going to them.
I know like you choose to do hair for a living 🤷🏾♀️ might as well enjoy it or find something else

If you didn't go to school and get licensed, you simply just can't expect licensed stylists pay. I drive a truck, if i didn't go to trucking school and get my class A license, no one would pay me what licensed truck drivers make. On top of that, i had to go back and get more certifications, Hazmat, Tanker endorsements. So now i can demand top pay along with my years of experience. To the lady talking about chair hopping- a lot of stylists only offer certain styles. So yes, people have to chair hop because it’s hard to find a stylist that does everything!
That doesn’t sound like a real stylist.right before we graduate cosmetology school we have to do hair in the shop on clients and walk ins for 4-8 wks sometimes longer depends on your skill and ability to communicate with the client. They have to do two weeks as the receptionist. Then we take one or two mock test before the real board test.
What you are describing isn’t a stylist if she can only do one or two styles and certainly has no formal training. And honestly a lot of these people would be fined and shut down over the code violations from they way they do things getting people sick and using dirty tools - it’s gross
I agree. I chair hop because one person may be really good at haircuts, another at coloring, or another with styling natural hair. I look at their social media to see what the majority of their clients' hair look like. But I also chair hop because the stylists are booked up on the first day of the month for the rest of the month which forces me to wait or find someone else for that month.
@@BiancaVietraining and mastery are two different things.
Also if there nature takes care of there hair themselves. Sometimes want to have a nice style they can't do or maybe treat themselves. Why would I go there u every week or two weeks to do my hair mostly afro or twist out
I skipped her because she just kept talking
What ever happened to taking accountability when dealing with the public. This stylist tried to justify why shampooing and conditioning a clients hair isn’t something she does since she never went to school to learn what is needed when rendering services to clients. The answer is to go and get educated through licensing. You are too lazy to learn a craft but want to get paid as if you’ve paid your dues for top notch pay. Simple🤷🏽♀️
That part, exactly! 💯
Talkin bout you don’t know how to properly wash hair and what products to use.. well LEARN! Smh
Braider licenses are not the same as a cosmetology license. They are NOT required to learn about shampooing and conditioning. In my state 18 hours of hygiene training just recently was added to their curriculum.
She may *have* to, once her chair starts going empty enough.
Or or. Yall can go to a licensed hairstylist that does it all and pay what's owed... stop complaining and do your research duh
@@dollhouseq1530Then they cannot put hairstylists in their Instagram bio. We get it but the white women or African lady down the street will do the whole package and put the other braided out of business because they got all their licenses
It's greed. Plain and simple.
Plain and damn simple 💯
Greed is fueled by ignorance. I have great respect for those who have invested in their education about cosmetology. Standing clientele is the hallmark of a respected and dedicated professional. Amen to real shampoos, too. Cleanliness and proper sterilization are critical to your health.
I went natural when i was 16, it was definitely a rough transition. For my senior pictures, my mom took me to a stylist who specialized in natural hair. I loved everything about the experience. Then for my senior prom, she took me to another stylist(on of her friends). She called my hair nappy, unmanageable, and would yank on it. The hairstyle came out nothing like I dreamed of and she basically ruined the night for me. 10 years later, I have yet to go back to a salon. Trauma runs deep sadly
Us men can say the same thing about barbers. Barbers out here charging 100 bucks for simple haircuts.
You got that right I stopped going to the barbershop years ago $100 for a basic drop fade is crazy
That’s probably why a lot of young guys are going bald 🤣 my husband is one of them. He refused to pay $40+ for a hair cut 🤣
They got to be out they mind. $100 for a cut? Does it even last more than 2 weeks? I see why guys are doing locs
Really 😮
$100??? What the fuqq?? Is this in CA? 😮
As a former Licensed Master Cosmetologist, washing every client's hair is mandatory! I know there were more violations that were/are happening. Check to see if your stylist is licensed. Contact your state's Board of Cosmetology. There is all the information you need to make informed decisions.
Yessss 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽omg cause they’re out here just reusing dirty tools and everything 🤦🏽♀️
I think there are some licensing that needs to occur for washing hair that is separate from hair braiding and weaving and/or needing to be in a barber shop s as opposed to being in a salon. I’m in Texas. Please let me know if I’m wrong.
I was wondering. When things changed. When I was going to the salon. It was mandatory that your hair get washed.
I agree. I'm a licensed Cosmetologist in the state of Texas, and if you come to me, I WILL SHAMPOO YOU. Conditioning Treatments are the new norm now, and we charge according to the PROFESSIONAL LINE PRODUCTS WE USE to achieve the look, not THE BEAUTY SUPPLY SHELF products. Also, we have to continue our education in the processes and techniques of hairstyling.
Let's not mention how unprofessional they are. I'm in the chair and the stylist is eating chicken over my head. Then she stopped to argue with her 'fiancé" on the phone. Then stopped to argue with her teen daughter who forgot to pick up the little sister from school, then she leaves to go get the child from school. I eft right behind her and she had the nerve to ask me if I was coming back and if I was going to pay for the service that she rendered.
Man, salons back in the day were nothing but the top professionals who respected you from the moment you sat in their chair, to the time you left. They were NOT about all this extra stuff that’s been going on.
How long ago are you referring to. The 90s stylists would have you in the salon from sun up to sun down for a wrap. 😆
I bet barbers aren't even doing this shit. They even do beards as apart of a service in some cases
@@catsrus-es9eu Black salons have been on some mess since I was a child back in the 80s! Black hairstylists have always been problematic. Before ig stylists existed these licensed stylist were over-booking having people sitting in the salon ALL day, intentionally giving you a bob when you asked for a trim bc they were jealous of your hair, rude, rough, burning your scalp and ears, on the phone the whole time, etc. All these “licensed master cosmetologists” speaking out as if their services were any better is laughable.
Only difference is the ig stylists aren’t licensed and made the fatal mistake of severely over-charging, but the black hair salon experience has always been horrendous. I’m glad so many of us have gone natural and learned to take care of our hair. This hair salon monopoly isn’t as prevalent in other communities because those women can do their own hair and aren’t as dependent on stylists as we were. Hair salons should be for special occasions or the occasional treat. No other group of women collectively is spending hundreds of dollars monthly at the hair salon. We gave them too much power.
At least somebody said that a wig is a single day style! Having lace glued to your forehead for weeks seems crazy
I've seen people have rashes and other skin issues from that lace glue. Plus they lose their edges!
That's why I do my own hair, nails, makeup and waxing. My boyfriend was impressed when he met me! 😂Some of these beauticians want top dollar for mediocre work...naw sis!!!
I did my own nails and occasionally do some waxing, but my eyes are not what they used to be so I occasionally go in for a mani/pedi and when I need and underarm and Brazilian. I do not pretend to try with my hair. My hairdresser understands what I like and don't and I gladly pay her. Even if I had the time I would not be able to manage because my arthritis will not allow
Same! Sometimes I get tired and don’t feel like doing my hair one day. Then I go to find a stylist and see the prices!!💀 I just can’t bring myself to pay the amount of money for something I can do myself, and do better!

I started doing my waxing. I had a nail appt two days ago and my manicure was an experience. The pedicure was good but I didn't appreciate the comments from the manicurist.Mind you I tried to support a black owned business. When I finally said ouch as she was doing my cuticles she said nothing. I won't be back. I want peace.
I think part of the problem too is people have an inflated sense of income due to social media. Hair stylists are not the only ones!! We got "mechanics" out here who can barley do an oil change charging 100 dolla for that! You don't need to go to fancy restaurnts all the time and wear the most expensive clothing just cuz it be on your for you page. Everybody out here thinking they deserve 80k 90k or even 100k but respectfully like that girl said: you don't even know how to WASH HAIR. You didn't get no damn certification or degree and you have not worked somewhere top notch. You work from the back of yo apartment expecting me to pay 5 star hair salon price. No ma'am!! I change my own oil and do my own nails now call me certified 😂
😂 periodt! I couldn’t have said it better. I truly would rather learn the skill myself than deal with foolishness. I just don’t have the energy. When I do run into TRUE professionals in different fields I hold on to them. It seems more difficult than it should be to find them though lol

Hey girl 👋
Most states they're not allowed to use chemicals unlicensed. Otherwise, they're technically braiders. Many states don't regulate braiders. The wig layers are braiders without products to wash with.
This is what I was just saying in the comments. A lot of these stylist, braiders, etc do not have a license. You can tell just by the way they operate. Offering very little education on the health of hair
@@simplyputmusings2948 right! That's what i just wrote. These are weavers. So they just throwing some braids in your real hair and slapping on a wig. She don't care if you are properly washed

I gave up on salons, braids, etc years ago because of the prices and folks messing up my hair with and without a license. I also got tired of the cattiness, gossiping, and the unprofessionalism. My hair is natural and I wear wigs for variety and I have peace.
I’m a stylist/barber and I totally agree. A person is paying a stylist for a reason. This new generation of stylist don’t want to take care of the client hair. They want a quick way to make money by making the client come prepared so they only have to do half of the work at full price. The same goes for requiring the client to wear makeup so they can take pics at the end of the service.

My 18 y/o niece just got taken by a “lace layer”. 1st she charged her a $100 deposit when she normally charges $20. Told my niece that she is charging her a “late fee” because my niece bought her own wig and the snow needs to bleach the knots. Then she got to her and told her that she was charging her a VIP appointment fee of $200. So my niece paid $550 total for a wig install that she had to come home and fix the lace and the edges. A cut/layers/face framing require the same amount of snips…whether shoulder length or to the waist.
At my salon, we only add on for length if it’s a chemical service, because more product is used.

I agree with you!
I am a recently licensed cosmetologist and I agree with it all!! I think it’s crazy to want clients to come already washed. Do not come to me with wash hair because you will never be able to wash and detangle your hair to my satisfaction. I will do it all for you!!
the fact that washing hair is becoming rare makes me sad.
My grandmother was a LICENSED COSMETOLOGIST for over 60 years. There is a difference. I learned to do my own hair because I had two horrible experiences by other stylists. I wanted to be grown and go elsewhere, but they were horrible. My mom also worked with my grandmother. The best part of getting my hair professionally done by my mother and grandmother was the relaxing time in the wash chair. I loved getting my hair washed. My mom would make your head feel so good, you would go to sleep. My grandmother knew and were close friends with the Bronner Brothers. There is nothing like getting a good service.
Agreed!
The best part of the experience was having someone else to wash your hair!!! Hahaha....
I loc'd my hair 12 years ago because I was fed up with the B.S. I don't regret it at all! These stylist outta control. Do your own hair or learn from TH-cam University!!
Yep a lot of the women in my family have gotten sister locs because of this craziness.
TH-cam is the best place to learn how to do your hair. I had to start doing my own hair due to the pandemic with everything closing down, haven’t went to a hair dresser since. I personally never had bad experiences, but this helped me save a lot of money and ease my anxiety. Plus my hair became much healthier after learning to use certain products properly.
So yes, if you can and if possible: learn to do your own hair
That’s exactly why I started my locs before I went off to school, I didn’t have $300 for a hairstyle then and I don’t have it now. Folks don’t do student discounts either! I’m trying to become a diy queen by this time next year
Same.
For the locs… are the maintenance cost high? How often do you have to go to get them serviced? My stylist just told me he is going to school to do IT. 😢. I’m looking into my options. Sad. He helped me grow my hair almost down my back. But my sister can do my hair in a pinch. But I’ll need something long term.
In the state I live in, the state board says that the beautician has to wash and condition your hair for most of the services they provide. It’s crazy how some of these beauticians want you to pay the price of a full service without providing a FULL SERVICE. Some are lazy and feel entitled.
That’s the thing, a lot of these Instagram stylists do not have a license & are scammers 😅
Chile, we got in trouble saying wash. My instructor use to say, " you wash clothes, but you shampoo hair". We couldn't say bleach the hair, for we had to use correct verbiage which is lightening the hair. This alone set us professionals apart.
The thing is these people aren’t beauticians or they are kitchen beauticians, they aren’t licensed. That would be fine if they weren’t charging salon prices.
This is why its so vital to know how to do your own hair. Ive been screwed over by these so called "hairstylists" multiple times. I had one girl start braiding my hair, told me she had to go pick up her child and never finished my hair SMH. That was the last straw for me and I started braiding my own hair from that point..
I go to a legit natural hair salon, great/respectful stylist, etc and I’ve been a dedicated client for almost 12 years. However, now I only go a few times a year. I got medium knotless braids a couple months ago and it cost me $300 (including tip). I hear those are “normal” prices but I just can’t deal with these prices. Everything else is already expensive in life. Going to a salon is seriously a luxury at this point.
Facts. Especially, those who get their hair professionally done back to back to back to back. Same thing with those expensive nails too, back to back. I can't imagine the cost. That's a LOT of money.
I remember back in the day, when I told my hairdresser I’m going to wash my hair myself she was appalled by it, I thought I was saving time and call myself helping but she refused to touch my hair unless she washed it. I don’t know if that was the standard back then but she did not want you to wash your hair.
Yes I shampooed my hair before getting a style and the stylist said she still has to wash it. Because it was a requirement. Things have really changed.
She can damage your hair depending on the style because of the products you used. Also, she is trying to make sure your hair and scalp is really clean before putting her hands in your head.
Yes, it was the standard up until 10-15 years ago. One issue was clients trying to finesse stylists by getting a free service because the style didn’t last. Like one of the stylists said state regulations require sanitary procedures. Braiders and loctitians, this might have recently changed, were not required to be licensed or some natural hairstylists fought against being licensed.
I think part of this is because there are so many getting weaves. So your real hair will be braided down. So they don't really care about your real hair
I went to someone who was a cosmetologist and I told her I had washed my hair and she didn't bother to wash it her self.
My biggest pet peeve was going to the nail salon, so that’s why I decided to learn how to do my own nails.
Same. I’m getting better with my press ons. The last time I went to the nail salon the tech’s boyfriend’s 2 children were there. I was pleasant and actually interesting the kids as I was service because they were literally all up on me. You would’ve thought they we my kids. 😂 I’m still keeping hope alive that I will find a good nail tech one day
@@culturecanvastvher boyfriend was there and yet the children were still climbing all over you? What was he doing, just sitting there? Chile 😒
Mine too I started gluing my nails on 😂
Times have definitely changed. Men were only present when he was dropping the woman off not sitting there waiting.

The at home stylists may not be able to legally wash your hair if they are not certified and they may not have the facilities to do it in a professional manner.
That is probably the first red flag to look for.
Speaking of the at-home stylist: I hate setting foot in someone else's house. They could have insects, a loud TV, and bad smells. Children running around screaming, dogs fighting in the living room, and the stylist stops doing your hair for 20 minutes to argue with the baby daddy.
Another reason clients are not going to salons they dont want to maintain their salon up keep.
1.The bathrooms are nasty
2.The floors are dirty
3. The staff dont want to share basic things like paper towel, disenfictent cleaners
4. At the end of the night they dont want to throw out their trash
5. They dont want to clean their combs, brushes, razors, clippers
6. The stylist does not wash their hands after dealing with a client
7. Hand soap is not provided 🤢
Ewww. that’s true thi

It’s also crazy to pay 200 for the same braids that use to cost 50 dollars same time to
Braid them same box braids😳
Rite I b like oh no
The braiding price has doubled and quantity in packaging is less
My neighbor does braids for $50 and it looks good
Facts
I remember I use to pay $30 for some box braids back in the 90s
This is why I do my own hair. I’m tired of Black hairstylists and how they treat Black clients. There’s no need for a deposit for a hair appointment, nevertheless having to wash your own hair prior to the service. It’s stupid!
Deposits are for accountability. Clients like to cancel last minute or no show at all and that makes it impossible for us to have time to fill that spot.
Deposits are to make sure clients show up because if they pay a deposit they’ll likely come.
Extension professionals require deposits in order to buy the hair from their vendor for you.
Deposits are there to ensure that a professional stylist time is respected.
My wife just had a conversation with her hairstylist about this. She’s Been a client for 15 years!!! Her prices go up every time she goes for a session which is every two weeks; she told her I can’t keep up with your prices. Mind you - the stylist just had a baby who goes to daycare; my wife is going full time to her backup stylist who charges a fair price.
So I had been going to the same African braider for 20 years, and when they got to lazy and didn't want to braid past my hair I was done. Flipping between American braiders for a while, because they do charge a lot. Pandemic hit and I decided to try and do some styles on my own, got into Crochet and i will never look back. I can't cornrow so i found it so easy to do a braidless crochet, they not getting money to snatch my hair out anymore. Now Im getting into twisting my hair.
I haven’t set foot in a salon (or Keke’s house) in years. I had one lady not only made me sit in a chair all day but ate her lunch over my head. Left the salon at night and the style wasn’t exactly what I wanted. She also had her kid helping. It was a hot mess.
I’ve learned to do my hair myself and I’ve saved so much money.
That’s crazy😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is sick 😭 left the salon smelling like a sandwich
Lol I thought that was just me. I told myself it was the last time when the stylist had her child blow drying my hair for her. That was years ago and she ultimately went out of business. However I think she was a real cosmetologist and should have known better.
@@aleavisionz I wish. I smelt like BBQ chicken wings, girl. Reflecting back, I can’t believe I didn’t just leave.
Then don’t charge salon prices if you don’t do salon work, the girl in the grey needs to stop talking, she’s making it worse. So did we go to school to be trained on washing? This is why you shouldn’t be charging these prices. Just don’t say anything else, this is ridiculous.
Girls like me grew up doing hair on all textures. There's no way I'd pay someone $300 for something I can do myself.
I just recently cut my hair off because I got fed up of the insanity of the hair industry. I went for a sew-in. Fully expected her to not pay any mind to the health of my hair. It is what it is. But for her to not know how to do the style she advertises she can do just because it’s on hair thicker than what she usually touches? Ridiculous. It’s literally just doing smaller braids and using more hair- which I provided. And she knew she fucked up.
I might just stop getting my nails done next and just stick to clear polish because the beauty industry as a whole is just becoming red flag field.
Facts I refuse to do my nails and hair anymore I wrap my hair up in scarf
I used to go to one Spanish salon growing up and theyd charge $50 for wash and set. They always did a beautiful job. I only left them because the stylists became boujie and down right nasty and I have alopecia and I couldn't risk them making fun of me. My mother's main stylist left and opened her own because of it. My mom moved to a whole new state and STILL comes back to see her! Shes a lifelong client. I was also lucky enough to have a male friend willing to do my hair for free but hes like high level fremason gossiper 😅 (being sarcastic) So i stopped. The amount of guilt trippin he'd put me through was heavy. Once I learned about how bad it is to deal with braiders i felt terrible for black women who need basic hair upkeep help. The amount of attitude and bullying you have to endure just to get robbed is heartbreaking. When do black women get a break? Black women should be able to receive wonderful scalp and hair upkeep without all the drama. Social media turned hair care into a dam scam fr. Side note: I cant wait till the heavy swirly baby hair on the wig look goes out of style.
Im so glad Im a retired licensed Cosmotologist. I was a cosmo for 17 years.I do my hair and my daughters. These new stylist are charging BEYOND what is reasonable and will not give a courtesy shampoo and conditioning treatment.-- CRAZY.
Not at all. It’s sad really. $300-$500 for hair is EXCESSIVE

Back in the day the stylists who got top dollar was the stylists who took care of your hair and knew how to get your thin and fragile neck length hair to full and thick mid-back or longer length. Those stylist got whatever they asked because the results were undeniable.
Absolutely! Im glad someone is calling this price gauging! Im sorry i will not pay 500 dollars for a wig! The deposit i understand but i dont like it. I would like to go back to the days when there was a balanced client/ stylist relationship relationship. I understand a braider wanting you to come washed and blow dryed. There is a difference between somone that only braids hair and a hairstylist. Lets not start on the style seat app begging for a Tip. The lady with the 27 year experience is right! I miss stylist like her, i remember growing up my mom and I having a personal licsensed cosmetologist like her. I miss stylist like her!
Perfectly put. Thanks for sharing. I would love to find a stylist that I vibe with, is professional, and isn’t doing the price gauging you mentioned. It can be so costly these days for even simple upkeep.
@@culturecanvastvThat's price "gouging".
It's them coming LATE AF and expect you to be early and / or on time.
It's the refusing to work with kinky hair unless it's straightened because they can not be bothered to deal with hair textures.
It's been years since I've been to a salon because I don't want to deal with high-priced unprofessionalism
The craziest thing about the stylist to me is the late fees. You want me to pay you a fee if I'm late, but I have to wait I am not compensated for my time.
Crazy
Let's not forget to add:: they want you to come with makeup now so that they can take your picture at the end to show for their portfolio.
I heard about that "come camera ready". No way should anyone be required to put on a nice outfit and a full face of makeup for photos and videos, then they expect the customer to pay full price. Like if I'm a model, then this service should be free!
Who has the nerve to charge $300 for a silk press? Probably out of their basement. I got a stylist with twenty five years experience who charges $65.
I remained with my same stylist for years. We became friends. Years later, when I had my twin daughters, I trusted her to be their stylist too. My twins’ natural hair was so healthy, it grew down their back with no breakage. In addition, she taught me techniques for home. ❤
I never learned how to do my hair natural or relaxed hair my mom never taught me and thought it would be something I figured out on my own. So when I was finally allowed to get relaxers I would go to a salon. She would relax it but when never style it like I wanted. I hated having to get my ends bumped. fast forward to years later I went back to natural and for a while my stylist would do it then after a while she wanted me to consider going back to the relaxer, or dyeing it, or even putting a texulizer in it to make it more manageable. She just didn't like doing my 4c natural hair. How ever she had no problem taking my money. She became bossy trying to push her expensive products on me, 16 bucks for hair grease that was a 4 oz jar. She would even tell me which stores she wanted me to go to to buy salon products. When I informed her that the store she kept pushing on me to go was always closed and never stocked. She looked shocked and continued trying to get my sister and to go there anyway. She would call every couple of weeks telling us we needed to come in to get our hair done. She would leave messages. I couldn't afford to always go so I finally told her that as I was often paying for my sister and my self to go. Eventually I got tired of her calls and stopped replying, and just stopped going . She booked me a appointment and told me what style she would be doing for my hair without my say so. She lost her shop and a new one shop opened. To my shock she was working there part time and at other place part time. She wanted to loc my hair which I said no to. She looked shocked. The last straw for my sister was when seh tried to braid her hair in box braids and the braids where not braided all the way. She ran out of time and rushed to do my sister's hair. In the past my sister's hair cuts where not even. She openly confessed to not liking 4c hair and how it should only be loced or relaxed. I have 4c hair. We both from that point on stopped returning her calls. We now have no where else to go but the good news is she left that salon. This new year I plan on learning how to do my own hair.
The last lady spoke nothing but facts!!
A “stylist” I went to to retwist my locs was totally unprofessional and disrespectful. I mad an appointment with her via a booking app for beauticians and barbers per her directions. I made the appointment and she never showed. When she did respond to the missed appointment, she told me I acted “entitled “! WTF! Because I expected her to honor an appointment she agreed to. She sent me a message stating that she was at her nephew’s graduation and was not available for services that day. My issue was I made the appointment and the app accepted and confirmed the date and time but instead of her being apologetic for the mishap on her part, she had attitude with me. This was the second such incidence: the first missed appointment was because her child got in trouble at school. It was just one thing after another yet, she was able to charge my credit card though SHE missed the appointment. Smdh! Her shop is in Riverdale Georgia on highway 138, please be aware.. totally unacceptable.
Riverdale😂 yep
I hope you disputed the charge with your credit card company and never saw that woman again.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone took this lady to civil court one day -- she better watch out. She might get the wrong one that actually has the time. For now just dispute the charges with your credit card company.
Hope you got a refund.
Get your money back from the credit card company.
Look... I understand inflation, but a cosmetologist has gone to school and been trained to WASH hair! I will not be washing my hair in advance! A BRAIDER who ONLY braids probably isn't certified to do anything except braid, that's different. Also, I ain't paying all that respectfully. I wish you the best, and want you to get your bag sis. BE GREAT 😘
It’s sad because back in the day hairstylists used to take pride in the art of knowing and doing hair. There are still many out there, but they get overlooked by these influence microwave hairstylists that just want to live an expensive life. Charging $600 for mediocre box braids and basic hairstyles is absolutely insane. I know certain styles take a while so they should charge accordingly but it’s crazy. I remember my aunt worked in a hair salon in Manhattan (5th Avenue iykyk) and she would charge $200-$300 for wash n curls but that was the standard price for that area which is known to be upper class. They didn’t mind paying that. You could always go to the hood or the Dominicans and get right for $20. But now the hood is charging crazy prices because they see people willing to pay. I have locs. I used to pay $100s just to get a simple wash and retwist. I stopped and learned how to do it myself. I respect the hustle but price gouging is greedy and unfair. Us 9to5 people help you guys live a lavish life while we work 8+ hours a day, most of you are rude and inconsiderate. Do better.

If you don't know how to properly wash different textures of hair or know how to navigate different textures of hair then you're not a stylist. You are absolutely right the first thing we were taught was how to properly wash and condition hair. Because the foundation of being a good stylus is annoying how to truly keep the hair and scalp healthy.

In this day and age, I feel like there is no excuse for stylists to be so ignorant in styling 4c hair, yet here we are. My mom ended up loc'ing hers because she was over it. I don't have 4c hair myself, but I still find the disparity appalling.
My braider is a straight PROFESSIONAL and worth every dime. I come washed and blowed dried by preference although she offers the service. Her shop is nice, clean and private in a salon studio. She provides the hair and it’s prepped and ready when I walk in. My style takes 4-4.5 hrs every time! my hair is oiled/moisturized and done. $ 180-220 and I’m good for up to 6-8 wks. Sis is booked and busy! You get what u pay for. Stop going to peaches’ house and expect a professional outcome. IMO✌️
I saw one stylist 3 times and she was late all three times. The last time I went to her she was an hour late, and when i tried to message her basically saying "Hey I'm here wya" she tried to spin it on me and say that she left to get lunch because I had JUST shown up which was incorrect because I was actually 15 minutes EARLY to my appointment and she was still no where to be seen when I showed up for the appointment, turns out she ran out to get something to eat. She still had the gall to ask for a tip on top of the $120 I was paying her for 2 strand twists on my medium length hair that she didnt even wash. She also had me brush out my hair because it had shrunk due to me sitting in the chair waiting for her to get to the salon... left her a terrible review after that and never went back.
$120 for two strand twists?
@narajayde520 Yeah. No extensions or anything. It was originally 80, but she bumped it up 40 dollars because the first two times were just a discounted price because she liked my sister and I had no idea until I went from paying the discounted price to full price while she was doing my hair.
"Have a luxurious attitude and maybe you'll have luxurious clients!" Dead lmao 🤣 💀
Come washed is the nastiest thing ever! And too, these stylists don’t know nothing about growing and strengthening your natural hair. They only want to play in weave! I prefer old school stylist.

I’m staying out the hair salons it’s bad here in Florida. The hairstylist are disrespectful , late attitude is bad. I don’t want them bad spirits in my head
It is truly a blessing that my mom is a trained hairstylist. Even as an adult she still does my hair free of charge, all I have to do is bring the products, we watch movies, and eat dinner, and now she is teaching my fiance how to braid so he can do my hair. I never expected to see commentary about hair styling because my mom and her friends were all so professional it was just an overall assumption I had until around 2020.
From overbooking, having your kids running around the salon, rigged equipment in the house, perming my hair and THEN BOX BRAIDING (so traumatic) leaving in the wee hours of the morning, blatant lateness to no showing I have been through it with stylists. It wasn't until I grew locs that I truly loved my hair.
Fourteen years and a few natural stylists later, I cut my hair and wish I never did. I couldn't find a consistent stylist and my locs were suffering. I found out on my own that I have 4C texture hair; alllllll these years later. I am pissed off but at peace because I have a starting point. Now I am building a rapport with my strands. I am so distrustful of salons and stylists now that I have shorter hair. I even thought about sewing my logs back in...until I heard the price equaling my mortgage and car insurance.
Some salons are verging on a health hazard
When I was like 12 ,one lady left relaxer on my head for 45 minutes because she was yapping with her friend and Forgot about me ( I was dumb and thought burning was a good sign ) Anyway , I was left with chemical burns 🤣
When I was younger my Grandmom would call them beauticians. She went to the same beautician for years! He was a man and he did a fantastic job. Then when I was in high school we started going to a woman beautician because he passed away. It’s so hard to find a beautician/cosmetologist these days. I do my own hair but every now and then I want some else to wash and blow dry my hair .

6:51 So basically she doesn’t want to waste her time but the client is paying her for her time! This is why if I get my hair done, I only go to a licensed stylist. On average, they’re fair with their prices and they make sure their client is happy before they leave the salon.
Crazy thing, these bootleg stylists will also tell you to buy hair if you want extensions/braids...and charge like THEY bought the hair
Chile NOT ME paying all that MONEY!! ONLY TO SIT AND WAIT!!😂❤
I stopped going to the hair stylist back in 2007 because of the shade and the attitude of the stylist. She found out I was a Christian and started treating me 'different' after that. Surely after that I started to develop alopecia and I started doing my hair at home and wearing partial wigs. I wish that I could find a stylist that has compassion, patience and that is very mature 😢 I would love to start going back to a stylist that can help me nurture my scalp and hair back to health.
