Sewing requires sooo much patience and adaptability. The reality is, it’s both rewarding and frustrating. Part of the joy of completing a project is that you’ve done hard things, and that’s rewarding.
Wow, what an epic dress! I love when fancy clothes have a fun, playful vibe. I’m glad you pointed out that a high price doesn’t automatically mean a thing was ethically made. Expense isn’t the only reason designers and companies use exploitative labor practices.
17:33 OMG!! I literally laughed out loud when you said "gee what a bummer". The tone of your voice is so perfect!! My su-purr-visor is very diligent about quality checks frequently and will not stop until he is adequately scratched & snuggled and cared for, and I will sometimes go slightly overboard with his cares so that he will get tired of it or annoyed so I can sew or iron without him in the middle of everything. 😅
Has a kind of 60s or 70s cocktail vibe to it. I didn't even try to follow the process for the skirt; utterly mind boggling! I don't know how you did it, despite having watched the video. 😂
I love that you talk about not enjoying the sewing process 100% of the time. I totally relate. There are always parts of projects that I don't necessarily look forward to, but I do always prefer making clothes to buying them so it's worth it in the end.
I think all hobbies have that bit you don’t enjoy doing lol and it’s unrealistic to expect every single bit of it is fun. The act of creating something also takes perseverance to get through frustrations because translating a thought from your mind into reality is a challenge no matter the medium. I think people complain about the complaining because they want a fantasy, but there are a lot of us who appreciate the honesty and realism. It turned out super fun it looks great on you. Also to maybe help with hand sewing you could try some finger cots, I hand sew for work for an artist so we often go through many thick layers of fabrics and when it’s to hard to pull we put on nitrile gloves to add friction makes it easier. But we use really big needles so it might not translate the same to hand sewing, when I do hand sewing on my garments I use a leather thimble and focus more on pushing it through fabric instead of struggling to pull. Don’t know if that helped but I also struggle with hand pain and so does my mom, I should ask her for her hand cream she says helps with the pain.
Agreed, every artform I practice has frustrating parts to it! The realities are if you're creating you're often stretching yourself and learning isn't always fun, also there are always just certain processes you have to get through to get to the ones you enjoy! I do need to get better about pushing with a thimble but I have also found a new specialist and am getting a bunch of custom devices that will help with my pain so I am feeling optimistic!
Your dress is gorgeous; just stunning. I think your choice of feather colors is fantastic; the purple and fuchsia would not have the same impact without the contrast of the lighter pink. I am writing this while the video is paused at 22:08, (slow typist) so that I don't miss anything. I've learned a lot in the last 20 minutes, thank you for explaining not just what and why you are using a technique but also why you like that particular effect. Thank you, so very much for your very realistic video. We have creative ideas that blindside us and sometimes our bodies and minds can't move fast enough to make our vision reality; you have, despite having pain. I will be watching all of your previous videos, starting now... at 3:08 am. LOL Happy Crafting ;D
Idk what those other people are talking about, I appreciate your real and honest views on your projects. Because god knows there is ALWAYS something that annoys me or goes wrong with my sewing projects!!! ❤
You should be proud of this dress! All that time you took to understitch, finish the seams, and secure the feather trim in a seamless way really shows in the finished product. This is definitely one of my favorite projects of yours!
My favorite detail is the edge finish above the feathers on each ruffle. I love how you went into detail about how you achieved that. You definitely pulled off the high quality couture vibe. Also your choice of the beautiful Woodland Park Rose Garden for your reveal made me nostalgic for the days when I lived nearby and enjoyed walking my dog there. Thanks!
Always a joy to watch your channel ...adore the gladioli flowers in the background matching your hair colour which is always so pretty. I wish I could sew.but I enjoy watching channels like yours and live my dreams that way. Watching from Down Under 🇦🇺 ..keep up your wonderful work. Understand your feeling low and not keeping up with chores...at 59 this year has been tough mentally and physically for me. You keep it real. X
Bravo! Your dress turned out amazing! I really appreciate how you keep it real about your sewing process. Everyone has their own way, and honestly, I always have at least one mini meltdown (expletives included) when I’m sewing. But somehow, I always manage to figure it out. I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything; they’re what make the whole process so rewarding.
I love that you show how upsetting and frustrating it is to sew. Sometimes I cry when I try so hard and things don't work out. I also remember from years ago about Spooky and how you managed the cutting out pattern with her. I still think about it. As it's not about removing your pet it's about managing the reason why Spooky was messing up your fabric or pattern. It was a great lesson and had you not shared it. I still may have been neive.
Thank you, I feel like setting up others with the expectation that the sewing process is nothing but joy sets them up to fail, and I want people to know it is okay if things don't go well it happens to all of us!
Such a lovely structured and whimsically floofy creation! I'd be interested to see you try the horse hair technique in a future project to see the difference.
Wow!!!! You have totally outdone yourself!!!! The dress is stunning and just as gorgeous, if not more so than the dress you took inspiration from. :-) I really appreciated the amount of time you took to make sure the insides were so well done. I liked the way you put the feathers in to save yourself in case it ever has to be cleaned. It is fun to watch you sew, you just seem like you are in your happy place when you are on the machine. :-) Another great project. The price you would have to sell this for seems WAY too low. Especially compared to the $12.5K. ;-) Maybe you need to go into business sewing these dresses. ;-) The color was so great too.
Very pretty dress!! You always pick such beautiful backdrops for your reveals. I was in Seattle for the first time last week and you live in an area with such colorful flowers!! 🌺
Thanks! I love how many flowers we have here, I grew up in Colorado and it is much harder to grow flowers there so I deeply appreciate what a variety there are here!
Is so cute! It would look. Great with that wool coat you made a while back. I'm envisioning an evening at the paramount or the symphony. ❤ i hope you find many a fun event to your liking to utterly slay at
were you able to link where u got the feather trim or how much trim u used total? It looks like maybe u used like 6 yards? I would love to find some trim like this for a dress too!
The dress is beautiful. The skirt is especially fun! I definitely agree that a rayon lining or something would've been nicer than the self fabric but it's still done real beautifully. Tiered dresses can be a pain to do though...I tried making a tulle skirt like that and I felt like flipping my sewing table the whole time...but I still really love the look of tulle so I'd probably do it again...but I won't try to rush it next time
I think this is quite wonderful and one of the reasons I love watching your videos is precisely because you are a real sewer, realistic about the projects in all ways. Be proud of this - you made it in spite of an ongoing pain flare (which I know from experience are BALLS) and we are our own worst critics I think. I am certain that nobody but you will know about the stitching in places 😉. I, too, complain like nobody’s business when I sew, often questioning my life’s choices and I’ve been known to deploy swearing in more than one language, if required!
@@HaleyMarieVintage currently, I can swear in at least four, including English, but, to be fair, some swear words in Italian and Spanish are similar to the French 🤣. I definitely recommend it though - as there’s nothing more satisfying than being able to deploy a choice French or German curse word or phrase at your otherwise loyal sewing machine (or to horrible people who have no idea what you’re saying)
it's SO FUN and whimsy!! amazing job, I'm so sorry you're dealing with that pain ): that's all I can say I hope it gets better or easier to manage 💜 thanks for sharing your creations 🪡
Hello! I really liked this dress though I do think the front middle section of the skirt sat… weirdly. Not bad, just weird. The light pink feathers actually worked to the benefit of the dress. Without them, the other colors would have been lost. Layering them as you did was a great idea! And pink is such a great color for you! You mentioned this dress being among the more expensive you have made. I’d be curious the see this dress (with total $) side by side with the other more expensive ones. Perhaps in 2025, include a scale/ranking showing where your make falls in the total cost compared to previous makes. At the end of the year, you could do a recap of your top 10 makes ranked either as most or least expensive or top 10 faves of the year. Anyhoo, I really like your channel and enjoy watching each week. Thank you!
Yes, the pleats with the rigid father trim definitely did something strange lol. I actually do a breakdown of my most expensive and least expensive projects each year and then lots of other random stats, this is last years: th-cam.com/video/hw-DY8UyO8I/w-d-xo.html and then I'll also do one this year!
Such a fun & sassy make! I wouldn't have thought about horsehair braid, but that's a valuable tool it seems for many dress projects. Thank you for mentioning it! May I ask where you got your labels? I would like to be able to add labels to my makes, for myself & others.
I got mine from Name Maker Inc but there are tons of places to get them, I only ordered from them because I was looking specifically for a custom woven cotton with a cat icon haha
14:38 then they can turn off your voice and just watch. I don't understand why people go onto someone else's channel and then complain about the creator.
I understand that you need to be a little click-baity in your titles/thumbnails. But it feels wrong. The dress is great, it’s inspired by the 12k dress … but it’s not a recreation by any means. The structure and silhouette and techniques are completely different. I appreciate the conclusion, the remarks about the things you could have done differently, and the overall tone of the video :)
I am sorry you feel that way, respectfully I disagree, this video isn't clickbait-y. I think semantically and by pure definition of the word "recreation" you are correct. However in the context of youtube videos and the way videos here are titled recreation is accurate and very close to the way my peers present recreations. I am glad you enjoyed my video nonetheless!
@@HaleyMarieVintage (well I also have issues with the rest of those, very few people actually recreate garments in a way that feels true to the original. They exist though)(but yes, overall the video was enjoyable and I’ll probably watch further content from you)
