There it is! Beautiful Rotring Initial. I've never owned this model... but from what I can see, it looks far more friendly to regular letter writing than the other models (600 series). Once again, great video and nice addition to your collection!
Good to see you featuring Rotring. I have 4 - an Isograph (technical drafting pen), two of their budget pens (nice writers, but now, alas unobtainable - I've tried), plus one of their Artpens - similar in shape to the Pelikan Script/Pilot Parallel.
After months of sbrebrown videos , I finally bought my very first fountain pen. Glad there was a review of it . Even better, Mr Brown seems to share my sentiments on it.It seems Rotring don't make fountain pens these days. Pity. I see an opportunity for a come back.
So true! I didn't regret buying it for my second pen. Too bad I broke a month ago and I just fixed it yesterday. Yey! Yes, I agree with your whole video. A really big heavy nice pen!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Rotring "Core" design :) Thanks for the review of the Initial. I had been thinking of getting one myself but the nib shape didn't appeal to my personal aesthetic.
I have a few of these pens that I've owned for about 5 years. They are not only handsome, but are among the most pratical, reliable and trouble-free pens in my collection. Not once have I had any problem with ink overflow or leakage. I found out by accident that the nib is friction fit. However it's a tight fit and requires a bit of effort to remove.
I own a Rotring Initial and need to replace the nib. Does a Rotring Freestyle and Initial have the same nib? Any suggestions? I love this pen and hate to discard it.
I initially - ;) - thought you were reviewing a ballpoint pen! I suppose I should have more faith in you. ;) Anyway, I really like the unique look of the nib. Good choice of ink too!
It's funny to see that there are still fountain pens sold under the Rotring brand. in most countries you will only find the calligraphy pen anymore. The others are now sold under the Parker brand, lke the Esrit, Newton (Facet), Executive...
Surely you must use pencils at least sometimes. Do you just use regular pencils or do you prefer nice mechanical pencils such as those made by Rotring?
Another nice pen from Rotring(now owned by Parker I am told), so no more fountain pens bearing this name) I have the Freeway and Newton models..both nice pens. The Newton is now marketed by Parker as the Facet I think.
luckly i found this rievw online thanks. i got the exact same pen as a gift from my grand father i am newto fountain pens. can you pls recomend ink or catrage, blue colour or black colour , and any other tips specifically for this pen i will be verry thankful to you keep dooing it buddy like you

Haha when I read the title, 'Rotring Initial Review', I thought you meant that it's a first impressions video or something. Turns out the name of the pen is Initial, so an initial review would be: 'Rotring Initial Initial Impressions'. xD

Sorry, I'd love to help but I've never used a Freestyle, so I don't know what nib it has.
Also, have you ever tried a Rotring 600? It looks awesome and there's one on Ebay, but I'm wondering about spending almost $250 on a pen!
That is a really nice green ink
Hmmm. I remember you making a Deus Ex Invisible War reference with Omar. Now APC. I'm thinking Command and Conquer, no?
I thought that Rotring makes only drawing accessories, pencils, compasses, etc. But this one seems to be a nice fountain pen, indeed!

I use pencils maybe five times a year; when I do, I typically use a regular wooden pencil :-).

I bought the pen for $3 (converted in USD) and I'm so happy to have this pen. So heavy yet bearable to use!
pro trick : you can watch series on Flixzone. I've been using it for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Tony Davis Yea, I've been using Flixzone for years myself :D
what was that annoying sound in the background while you were doing the writing portion of the review?

Krishna Allam Waterman Mysterious Blue-black is very nice, as is Serenity blue by the same brand.

When I think "Amsterdam" and "shop," fountain pens are not what come to mind. :P
I don't like the initial singing.
Those Germans man, they over engineer everything from cars to pens...
