    Such a good year! Went out with a bang too! Colonization will breathe even more life into the game.
    What else will happen? Npc crew overhaul maybe? EVA repairing for explorers? :D
    Also your new open communication style with the community is very appreciated is certainly is one of the reasons I've been extra active within the game and the community. And yes that includes buying and using arx.
    You have an opportunity get star citizen players to migrate to E:D. People (me included) are sick of waiting for SC to be even remotely playable and you have a great momentum now.

    There really should be a passive income benefit for colonization, or at least discounts on ships, commodities, etc.

      Some kind of stock ownership that paid dividends would be such a neat thing in the game. The more you invest the more you get, just like real stocks.. Stock trading, stuff like that. And then depending on how certain "brands" sell across the community, like ships, it would affect stock prices, etc.

      originally, when i had base building in mind, i thought maybe it would be great to set up a mining base on a planet, then come back occasionally and collect the resources for your own inventory. looks like it isn't going to operate that way. maybe it will work like Fleet Carriers, whereby if someone trades/rearms in your system you get a cut of the profits? that would be great too

      You are right. The fuel behind anti xeno combat was the massive rewards. Those rewards were what motivated people to participate and organize. Without proper incentive people would create one or two systems and only die hard players will keep on building.

      @@effervescentrelief Cool idea. It would require a lot more background sim, though. I was thinking something more like profit sharing, or a royalty for all revenue generated there and the perk of having perhaps a 10-15% discount on anything you purchase there.

      @@AlIguana I like the idea of being able to collect a reserve of resources mined in a system colony you founded, but that might introduce complications, like are those resources supposed to be stored indefinitely for you? What if you don't come back for a long time? I think simple profit sharing makes more sense.

    This all looks good, but we will appreciate as well if NPC's could sit on all the unused seats of my ship, and do useful stuff there - gunner, fighter pilot, repair guy (taking over the use of the AFMU and repair drones without need for further interaction). + ship interiors, even if it would be released ship by ship slowly and with some smaller fee per each attached to it.

    No upkeep has me in, I only have 56m despite playing for 1000ish hours but now I have a reason to earn credits, set myself an objective to earn more. Life needs me to drop in and out of gaming over time, with no upkeep I am 100% all for the effort. I will have a home out there. Apart from O'Neil One, which technically isn't mine. I can now setup O'Neil Too 😂

    The way this fits with the existing exploration and trade aspects of the game sounds promising, because a common complaint is that a lot of the features they add to Elite are too isolated.
    This is an entirely new way to approach exploration, and if they are looking at this as a type gold rush, then I hope selling shovels to these colonies will be lucrative for traders.

      third party tools are going to be great for this too. but most of it should be accessable ingame (eg for a mining economy you want lots of pristine ring gas worlds and pristine metal planets. i guess for acri economies you want atmosphere planets that aren't too warm or too cold? etc. if you find a system with both these things that would be a great system to fully invest into). As an explorer I love this, finding perfect systems is going to be... fun? lol

      "pretty short" is understating it to be frank. Distance between Colonia and the bubble is about 20k ly, so even if we assume that players are able to colonize a new system on average every single day without fail, at 10ly per colony system even if we added in a perfectly straight line of systems spaced out 10ly each directly to Colonia it would take well over five straight years of continuous effort just to daisy-chain colonies to Colonia. If we set it at half of a carrier's jump range, 250ly, that means, assuming one colony per day, it would take a vastly more reasonable 3-ish months to get to Colonia. And if we go with 100ly like Windrake101 suggests that'd be a bit over half a year, which is also fairly reasonable I feel. Regardless, though, 10ly is just way too short no matter how you slice it, unless players end up being able to spam out a dozen colonies per day or something.

      As a starting point, i really think 10ly is fine. When Arthur says they are a little bit frightened about what will happen when players get this tool in their hands, believe them, and expect them to want to test the waters slowly and methodically. If progress across the galaxy is way too slow, then frontier can speed things up, but if it's way too fast, then they have no way to retract that sort of progress. Slow is a better starting point than fast, is my point. Lets see where we are when the feature has been released for a month or two, and then we can determine what changes we want to see.

      @@rikiba851 Here is how we could compromise. Make the max 100 lys as the maximum range, BUT add in considerable cost the further away from the 10lys range one reaches. The 10ly range (1-10Lys) could be the base line for a certain amount of materials needed to build that system, and thus could be more easily done solo. But the maximum 100 (and near it) could require so much more, that it basically requires a group of CMDRs working dutifully to fulfill that amount within the time frame.
      Further more; obstacles, in the form of permit locked systems & regions and even gaps of stars between the "Daisy System" and the target, would ether further drive up to cost, OR make it impossible to claim without first daisy-chaining around the offending obstacle at lower ranges.

      AX combat isn't over, the war is but now you gotta sac up and go hunt.
      Go out towards Maya or coalsack and you will find NHSS's to hunt goids in.

    i think that many, many fans and people who don't play elite yet, need the ship interiors with things to interact, more places to visit in cities, stations, carriers and settlements, and more planets to visit, imagine flying through clouds, visiting beautiful lakes, fighting in a heavy fog, scanning weird looking trees
    talking about ship interiors - i would love to spare some 10-15 minutes inside my ship to repair damaged systems/modules by myself, using tools, instead of sitting, doing nothing and waiting for a limpet to repair my ship, or going to the nearest populated star system to spend money on repair
    also the end of thargoid war and 0G outside the ship is a good mix, destroyed systems and abandoned stations with pirates looking for valuables, capturing the stations or just being a pirate there, it could be something too

      I think what is really interesting is to have gameplay dynamics. Regarding ship interiors I think there should be tools to third party developpers to make them and sell them for arx.

    Glad to hear the cost of colonisation won't be too prohibitive, although I'm sure it will still be out of reach for many part-time players like myself who are unable to devote as much time to the game.

      depends. claiming a system will be cheap-ish, and setting up the first star port won't be that prohibitive (a dozen runs of metals, a few cargo holds of computer parts and atmosphere processors etc, a bit of mining). it should be doable easily enough, even if you're a part-time player. (As long as you can manage it before the time-limit runs out.) Then the system is yours forever, so you can just come back whenever and build more bases and stations when you get time, no time limit on those.
      that said, we don't' know yet, but i hope at least claiming/setting up that first starport is accessible to *everyone*, not just 24/7 grinders. I think Fdev have this at the forefront of their minds too, to be fair

    I think upkeep costs should be implemented but only with the introduction of passive income that can fully cover system expenses and even profit for the player.
    E.g.
    Expenses - System authority vehicles, station upkeep, etc...
    Income - Bonds & Bounty percentages, passive commodity trades, discovery data, etc...

    If there's one tiny little update I could suggest do fdev and that is all the cart module and ship storage for the ship store for fleet carriers.

    This seems awesome and TRUST me I am not a forum dad advocating for higher cost but generally speaking less grind/cost = less impact with Elite. What concerns me is this is going to be a feature to leave your name on a station and that is it. There will be nothing beyond that or at the least the actual 'development' beyond building the station will be extremely shallow/meaningless. Hopefully I am just wrong but I also hope the community doesn't get their hype up for something that is going to let them down and make Elite look bad.

    I can't wait. Hey, guys, how about station careers. Station security work or ship repair work? Or maybe a mini carrier that holds 3 or 4 ships, so you can have your bounty ship, mining, and passenger ships when you're away from your home station.

    Can we even create/request new BGS factions now, or when this comes out? Pretty sure the ability to request a BGS faction was ended completely years ago... Would be nice if upon successfully colonizing a system the first time we could create our own new minor faction there. So not for every system but just one per CMDR which can also travel along the path if you daisy chain systems...

    I feel based on the scale of the galaxy, 10 LY is a little restrictive. I'd like to see more.

      the further out you get, some systems are farther apart than that, so 10LY would make them uncolonisable. I think 40 LY is a much more reasonable number

    It would be nice to be able to mass transfer cargo directly to stations with the fleet carrier or pay some type of fee to hire Dock Workers or whatever to do so so we don't have to do tens of thousands of tons of cargo ourselves with a ship that can carry less than 1,000

      if you claim and leave it alone you eventually lose your claim.
      After you build the starport you are the permanent system owner and can continue developing it

      Not directly, it will most likely to be similar to the current player factions, you are basically labeling the system, and that's about it... I doubt the system colonization will appeal to a lot of non-BGS players.

      We can name our carriers, so there is a system in place. Unfortunately they didn't feel like answering that question.

      whole system. you start with a small star port. then the huge Colonisation ship comes in, and opens up a "tech tree" where you can build up to large Coriolis type things (but have to "fill-in" the tree by building lots of smaller starports and surface bases first). thats how they explained it on previous streams, kindof

    Will there be some provision given to 'reserve' architect status on systems that you were first to discover?
    There is one solitary system in the game that I would dearly love to be my own, it's very special to me and would hurt if somebody else got it first. I found it, it's my own, my precious. It would feel so wrong to have another commander claim it and control it's development. Up until this point I have freely shared my exploration data but this almost incentivises you to keep it secret lest an unscrupulous commander steals away your prized discovery.
    It's a long old way away from the bubble so unlikely to be an issue for a good while but it would be really nice if you could lay claim to a system in advance if you are registered as the first to discover it, even if this were a limited system that you could only use for example once a month.

    it's 22000ly to Colonia from the Bubble. Under ideal circumstances you're looking at 2200 months at 10ly max range. So you will colonize the outer space all the way to Colonia in the jolly short time of about 183 Earth years. Well done, that's a brutal expansion speed. Would you at least explain what is the reasoning behind such an arbitrary limit?

    CONTACT LIST ORDER .... please add settings to sort the contact list order completelly please, THIS is important, and if possible add settings to order the module list of target subsystems please.
    But the contact list need this for the gathering of materials aftercombat, i want a way to sort materials shown by distance at very top of the list.

    Certainly appreciate no upkeep being required but colonised systems need to generate some form of passive income for the person making the initial investment....there needs to be some return on investment imho, however small. Mind you, this is probably easy to do to reward solo CMDRs but not so easy of if have a group contributing in terms of how do you ratio out the passive income across the contributors in the group. That could perhaps be automatic based on contribution but might be easier to allow the architect to perhaps assign that distribution of income?

      He explained it as you having to take over the system using normal powerplay mechanics. So the system starts neutral until a powerplay faction is actively trying to take control. Thats how i understood it unless someone can correct me if im wrong.

      A superpower offsets the cost for adding your system to their sphere of influence

      Get in line, they need to fix odyssey vr support first. Its insulting right now and despite having bought odyssey at launch, I've yet to actually do anything on foot becuase of how bad it is.

      i mean, you can hang around in system and try to intercept the architect's Type 9's as they jump in full of goodies for the Colonisation ship. But they can just switch to private/solo (and tbh I'd totally be doing this in Solo to avoid gankers)

    It might represent the flow from the war to colonization and the cooling off of the intensity of the game.

    Hey guys im really looking forward to this update, but there's two things i wish you would reconsider. I think the 10ly restriction should be removed so players can create a bubble in any uncolonized system. That way we can make bubbles all over the galaxy. Second, we should be able to attack other player colonized systems and take them over. That would give squadrons more meaning and we can have player led galactic wars. Maybe allow players who arent interested in pvp to lock the system. You guys have done a great job this year, keep up the good work!

    Look, very cool and all, but going for the safe approach is a mistake, we have to care about it. Devoiding it of conflict just makes it boring, stiff system that doesn't accommodate player agency, "personal narrative", organic gameplay to emerge and a reason to care. Also, there needs to be more things built on this, more things for us to control about the system and pay offa, rewards.

    Are they really going to introduce a colonisation system before the mechanics we were promised like: EVA, raiding ships in space, Thargoids in the flesh, etc, ?
    I don't know, but what's the point of colonising systems without really any practical sense beyond just expanding the bubble?
    In my opinion it seems to me a mechanic that in the long run will quickly lose the interest of the community. It's something like putting the interior of the ships if later it's only worth to say...oh look how beautiful is my Cobra MK IV (the one who has it of course) and there's nothing to do. The same thing is going to happen to this: A commander colonises a system. Go through all the process that this will entail and then..... to another one...and another one.... I see it very boring.

    I already don't like the idea that you only have so much time to build in the system. Like I'm in the middle of the galaxy and I want to colonize this system. It might take me two weeks of playing just to get back.
    I don't know if I missed it being mentioned, but there should probably be a weekly claim limit.
    Good that you can't permit lock systems that would kind of break the BGS aspect.

      They mentioned you can only have one active claim at a time, and that period lasts for a month of gathering resources, so a single person can only claim one system a month.

      @@RenegadePlayingGames As i understood, you have a max of one month to complete the first Station, but if youre quick you can do it in a week and if the station is finished it will get its own colonization guy at the weekly switch, so you can theoretically do one a week if youre dedicated.

    10 ly is WAY to little. It should be at least 100 preferable 1000ly. Some systems are more than 10 ly apart and will stop expansion. I have a system I fully discovered in every aspect that is 1500 ly from the bubble. I dont wanna have to colonize 150 systems to get their. Thats extremely stupid.

      It’s probably coming at some point in the future. Many of the newer ships appear to have accurate scaling for boarding and internal navigation.

      I mean, yeah. It'd be cool, i love every bit of immersion a game has to offer. But also there's no point in it unless you can do something useful in those interiors. Imagine all the dev work needed and then all you do is just walk around.

    We need AI improvements, especially on the ground combat stuff. Plus some variations between systems. It is quiet boring to travel many light years away from SOL, as an example, only to find the exact same BS, bots, loots, buildings, missions, weapons, tactics, layouts and copy/paste everything else. The ports are the most unituative of all. So boring and monotonous. We need variations in tech, buildings, ports... etc. You want people to keep playing this game? ... you need new content, always. And new ships aren't going to cut it, alone. I been playing ED since the beginning. This introduction to colonies will help, but we need more variations in systems. The copy/paste buildings and ports and AI, are getting boring.

      You can only claim one system at a time, and that claim process takes a month. So trolling here would be reduced to that, and it would also require some dedication to make it permanent since they would need to gather resources.

    I want up keep cost removed to fleet carriers because I would love to keep a fleet carrier BRUTALISM ATR IMPERIUM
    I'm not really into system colonization it looks good sounds good no up keep sounds good but managing the full size population trade resources together up materials to build facilities with sounds a little too complex for me
    I hope others would enjoy the grind and honestly this is for those that really want to colonize
    For me I just want to have my upkeep cause removed to my fleet carrier BRUTALISM ATR IMPERIUM and able to see my fleet carrier with 800 million light years instead of 500 light years
    And unlimited fuel no longer requiring tritium

    Not using bgs to expand stations and infrastructure inside current systems is a big loss for bgs groups. And again bgs players haven't got much. The biggest question is what is the point of bgs, can you do any thing other then get your name in systems. Answer nothing pointless game play

System colonization sounds like it’s going to be the next 'Unobtainium'; just another expensive feature to grind for. You claim it’s 'not like carriers,' but honestly, it sounds even worse. It feels like you’re talking out of both sides of your mouth here. Players have been asking for immersive gameplay and meaningful quality-of-life improvements, but instead, we keep getting these shiny new features that add more grind without addressing the core requests from the community. Bah, going off my hard drive at this rate...

      How, Beyond the initial transporting of resources to complete the claim, he said there is no ongoing maintenance. Also if your smart about it you can se the economy of your system to take advantage of nearby economies and create a lucrative trade route.
