Just trammed my Bridgeport with the same back actuated indicator you used. I got it on eBay, but didn't know how to setup it up in the spindle to tram with the accessories I had. As expected, Tubalcain had the answer, as I used the bent rod trick you demonstrated. I'm 70 and just getting seriously into the hobby, and your videos are both educational and inspirational. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? :)

I'm looking to buy a Bridegport down the road.
I was originally going to become a machinist but missed one math class to many and ended up logging for 25 years.
Even the little I did learn in machine shop served me well through the years.
    Shop class is essential.
    Great videos

I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed watching your videos and learning very useful information from them. I am a beginner machinist and eager to learn how to do things the RIGHT way. I'm sorry to hear that the Tubal Cain in England is no longer with us, but I am so glad, at the same time, to hear that you are still living. I have bought many of the English Tubal Cain's books and have found them quite useful.

Your one of the smartest machinists I've seen on youtube so far. I can't say anything wrong with that. I like how you remember to say "check it again once it's tight" . Most people I see never do that and it's usually likely it could move. People I work with square the head but they don't do it like that with the indicator. I try to tell them they're wrong. You are right that the bigger the sweep of the indicator the more accurate it will be. if you use large diameter cutting tools for instance

You can also put the machine in neutral and turn the spindle with you fingers, but you have the be careful that you don't bump your indicator or the piece holding it. That is what I do because the machine I use is a variable speed model and you can't easily get to the belt.

Great video. Very informative. It's splitting more hairs, but if it's important to anyone, (those in the gage/fixture trade) lowering the quill all the way down will exaggerate your reading. Meaning, if your indicator is showing out of square about .001", with the quill all the way down you'll be showing two or three thousandths out. I notice in the video that he had the quill down, but did not mention it's importance.
My trade is all about splitting hairs. Sorry!

@@mrpete222 I have a riser and I didn’t think to scribe a transfer mark. And I don’t want to take it back apart. Dummie All: Clamp something on the table or vise that’s square with the front edge of the table. Loosen and oil the ram so it slides freely forward and backward with the ram lever. Clamp a dial indicator in the chuck. Indicate the squared bar on the table by moving the ram with the lever back and forth until the indicator reads zero. Mark mating surfaces for alignment.

Tubalcain is only half way done tramming in the head, he needs to do the same procedure on the front & back of the table or "Y" axis. He needs to "nod" the head up or down until the dial indicator reads the same 0 as it does in the "X'" axis.

You showed tramming only the X axis. That was easy. Next time show doing Y. If the radius of the indicating arc is about the right size, the front will move about twice as fast as the rear. It is still much harder. If the head isn’t trammed there will always be a step between cuts when facing a workpiece. Also, if the knee is moved, the center of a hole will move sideways either in the X or Y direction. Good teacher.

Ok these cutter would be for cnc milling but i will find some others tooling more suitable for bridgeports like hss or cobalt end mills or drills, which by the way, we can definitely save you money on..But this is not a sales pitch, I think your many videos are very informative and certainly your knowledge is helpful to those less experienced or just learning machining. I was looking and could not find your email as i wanted to ask you about doing a short interview. We have a fairly large following of customers weve built over 10 years and many of our new customers seem to be new machine shop owners. We get a lot of calls at tech support from customers like this who would benefit from what you teach. Doing this interview, which would be like 15 minutes or less, would introduce them to you and your videos would give them a great resource for general machining tips and education. I know it would be a good thing for both of us for sure..Our blog is midwestsupplyusa.info. Perhaps you could inbox me there or sales@midwestsupplyusa.com

    Too much room for error.
Instead, put a 1" micrometer standard in the middle of the table.
Fit a test indicator on 4" radius arm on the spindle.
Move the table to the left, and touch the indicator to the standard, raise table till the indicator zeroes.
Set Z axis dial at zero, then lower the table .200"
Move table to the right and turn the spindle 180 degrees till the indicator tip is right over the standard.
Raise the table .200" and note the indicator difference.
    Adjust by 1/2 and continue.
