    Mr. Pete saves the day again. I just purchased one of these items and couldn't understand the pidgin english instructions included with the indicator. And I quote: "The centering indicator is designed as a precision measuring instrument for locating a workpiece by the pointer while the spindle rotates when the spindle rotates, the indicator always face the operator. Thus brouoht much convenience for operator." We also have other classics such as: "Place appropriate feeler in indicator rocker braecker and screw it." (Holy smokes!) and "The strajoht feeler is for use in inside diameter measurement."
    Anyway, thank you for providing some clarity on how to properly use the device.

    I have one as well. Never have I had anyone elaborate as well as you have on correctly using it. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It helped me a lot instead of trying to interpret the folded up 4" x 4" paper inside the case.

    Not only should you run it slower as others have said, but I also put the spindle in neutral and walk the coax around by hand to make finer adjustments. 12 and 6 o'clock and 3 and 9 will get you centered pretty well.

    I have never run a mill, but i'm researching coax indicators, and ended up here. When adjusting the X,Y in the last stage, you set the X, first, to a needle moving 0.005-0.006, trying to see a change. Then you adjusted the Y, seeking zero deflection.
    Wouldn't you want to go back, and see if a fine adjustment on X, would bring the needle to zero?
    It seems it would be easy, and quick to do. The Y axis looked much easier to adjust, because you were approacing zero; not so with the X, as the gage was going all over the place.
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge... and for all the work it takes to make these vids. You and I were around the last great days of public school. I taught in the '70's & '80's, (did a couple of 'stretches').
    TH-cam, in a lot of ways is a portion of the modern school. Google, and research, TH-cam to see practical, safety, and industrial use, then the how to's, on top. (I watched an industrial safety film about abrasive stones a few years ago, and it turned me off bench grinders, every since. lol, I use abrasive wheels only on the bench, now.)

    I received that exact same indicator last week. I can already see it is indispensable for my little Grizzly G1007 mill/drill. Much more so than the hallowed Bridgeport. Every time I change tools the next tool is either too long or too short to reach the part and I have to move the head and realign since I have a round column. Thanks for the video.

    I have bought one of these indicators "new" & haven't used it yet being not very educated on how to use it properly. Thanks for the video it really helped! But I would not run it that fast there is no need to. Another good use for it is to realign the tailstock quill on your lathe after moving it for turning a taper, it will at least be a ballpark start for a more accurate alignment.

    Easiest way I do this is swing the indicator around the actual diameter I'm indicating by eye ( off the workpiece ) and move the axis' until it looks close, then drop the indicator on the diameter to be indicated and again move the axis' until it's indicated in.
    Usually I can get within .020" by eye before sweeping the actual workpiece.

    I agree with some of the others. Your spindle speed is far too high for a coaxial indicator. I have been using one for years and years. Run it at about 100rpm. Also, put a little oil where your feeler ball contacts the work piece to keep it from chattering. Especially so on aluminum (and other soft materials) , as the ball will gall the surface, and build up material on the ball, and make it run rough as all get out. Also dont forget to oil the contact face of the indicator body, you will burn up the surface running it dry.

    I was told there is a hole in the head of the Bridgeport for a coaxial indicators, so how or why didn’t you use it vice the collets

    • @djay1120
      @djay1120 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is. To the right side of the spindle, on the spindle housing. However, it's not for a coaxial indicator. A coaxial indicator is required to spin in order to do its job, and what you're referencing is a casting in the housing, therefore doesn't spin. The casting "hole" is used for holding an indicator to align work in the x and y axis without the need for removing your tooling. Works like a charm for that purpose, but nowadays, so do spindle indicators, which are just attached to the outside of the spindle. Many ways to skin the cat, so to speak.

    I'd think you would want to turn the spindle by hand like with the last word so that you can see which needle movement is caused by which axis. In other words use the technique of an ordinary test indicator that has the dial facing the same way all the time.

    • @BillChennault
      @BillChennault 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Galfonz, the instrument is designed to be turned by the mill. In general, that is the way they are used. I suppose one could come up with a reason to turn it by hand if you just had to know how much it was out and/or in which axis. But, I've never indicated something that was only out in a single axis.

    Why run the spindle so fast? - surely a slower speed will be just as accurate and they're will be less wear on everything?

      did you watch the video he said his mill only goes as slow as 644 rpm and the indicator is rated up to 700 rpm so he is using it just fine its within the rated specs.

    I would still use back gears and run it slower. Most of the time with machine work.....slower is better. Bad things happen very quickly.

      @ClownWhisper 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Toolmaker are you fucking kidding me? How how the hell could someone they call themselves toolmaker ask if a dial indicator is obsolete that doesn't even make sense

    • @dfpolitowski2
      @dfpolitowski2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Clown Whisper I say this because every shop I worked in has had one of these indicators and all it does is sit in the cabinet unused no one ever uses it

    • @dfpolitowski2
      @dfpolitowski2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Clown Whisper I always use the last word indicator with a rod extending the indicator to appropriate diameter and so do many other Machinist I'm not saying it's not good instrument I'm just saying I don't see anyone using it

    • @ClownWhisper
      @ClownWhisper 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Toolmaker LOL I I was half asleep and thought you meant the indicators were obsolete indicators in general lol nothing made sense to me I guess I shouldn't remark when I'm half asleep

    when first starting out there is always someone that got stuck with getting a coax indicator then they spend the rest of their carreer trying to convince people on it. Not needed in the slightest.

      coaxial dials need to run as fast as you can turn them by hand so the lowest speed is ample enough anything more is nonsense,wear and tear friction vibration centrifugale force and so on.the speedo on my car says 280 but i never go that fast its pointless. keith fenner has a perfect demo of what im talking about.

    For close work such as indicating a work piece in with an indicator, I see no need to engage the spindle. These type indicators have limited use and really just take up space in your tool box. That's just my opinion. Learn to indicate the right way!

  • @trentcunningham2416
    @trentcunningham2416 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ummm...that's a great way to destroy Your indicator... slower rpm for God's sake or by hand.... I bet running it that fast is giving you that "vibration" and a false indication

    First of all you have to realize that in these days there is no room for the words "perfect or perfectly " perhaps in your days there where no good ways of measuring some thing accurately and you could call "perfect or perfectly " at anything within .0001 of an inch but nowadays with the modern measuring ways those words are obsolete.

  • @bradgeary3467
    @bradgeary3467 ปีที่แล้ว

    uummmmmm…. way way to fast. if you don’t want it worn and blown out after 4 parts i’d run it as slow as possible or buy hand… would you run your other dials in a reciprocating fashion that fast 😆
