As someone who works on this problem in Vietnam, I was really surprised that the govt regulators don't require the tour operators, cruise ships, etc, to clean up the bay as part of their license. Something to brought up/discussed for sure. Tourism is so important to Vietnam.

The bay is stunning and we had the best time, the rubbish from what we could tell is mostly the styrofoam from the communities who live there, some bottles and plastic as well though which are likely from the cruises and locals combined. But I agree, the amount of money those cruises make they should have some responsibility in cleaning the bay!
Of course! We are inherently positive people and try to make the best of any situation but we also don’t want to give false expectations. We LOVED Ha Long Bay and are so glad we did it though !

We went in May and yes the weather was PERFECT 🤩 It barely rained our whole time in Vietnam in May but it was HOT haha so you can basically have one or the other 😅

I did a 3D/2N Ha Long/Lan Ha Bay cruise in October/November, 2022. $490 single, $770 couple (USD). I was ... underwhelmed. First of all, we were accompanied everywhere by 17 to 18 similar-size craft and, probably due to the oppressive afternoon heat, everyone did activities like kayaking, beach, village visits at the same time. I kayaked the first day and it was like rush hour on a Los Angeles freeway! Like you, I skipped the next day's activities. Additionally, calling this a "cruise" is a misnomer. Over the 3D/2N we were aboard, I estimate we were actually underway for less than 30 minutes total. The ship only moves before picking up or dropping off passengers. SO, other problem there: no breeze over the bow, rendering much of the ship outside the air conditioned spaces unusable. Finally, the trash. It's a shame and much of it's due to the area being overrun with tour ships. It's interesting watching reviews by others, though. Appears the experience is very much "luck of the draw." In sum, people should see Ha Long, but, take a day cruise. It just isn't all it's cracked up to be. Sorry, but it's very "tourist-trappy."
We loved it! Yes there are a lot of other boats but it didn’t make us feel crowded, the bay was large enough that there was plenty of space. But we were in Cat Ba Bay which has much less boats (apparently). We’re also so happy we did two nights! Just waking up to that incredible view the second morning 😍 one night would have felt to rushed and short for us.

Just did a day cruise and it’s a tourist trap. Extremely crowded and water is unclean. Ship crew were great food was terrible. If we had to do it all over again, we would take a pass.
Let me answer that for them: if you wish to be stuck on a boat surrounded by middle age parents with young kids, retirees and honeymooners, sure go ahead. If you're a young budget traveller/backpacker: I advise avoiding this overly touristic scam at all cost before boredom kills you.
That wasn't my experience at all. Most of my fellow passengers were young and energetic - and I don't recollect seeing a single child. I suspect you have Halong Bay cruisers mixed up with the 8,000 passenger Caribbean cruise bunch with ports in Florida.

We went on Erina Cruise, it was a beautiful boat! I can’t remember the over-arching companies names but they own 4 cruises 😊
