This week I had the incredible opportunity to ride the new triumph speed 400 and scrambler 400x in the beautifully sunny Valencia, Spain. the mountain roads were an excellent place to really get to understand this motorcycle.
This bike really is good fun, whether its around town, in a city, on the motorway or out in the twisty turns. It's a really good allrounder and offers extremely good value for money. the new 400cc single cylinder engine is very impressive and feels miles ahead of the 350cc Royal Enfield alternatives.
In this review I discuss in detail the handling, performance, stopping power, suspension, comfort and more...

The black variant of this bike looks stunning...
It's great to see manufacturers starting to take the small/mid size bike range a lot more seriously. And it's great to see reviewers review these bikes for what they are. The horsepower/top speed game has been run and done. Now it's time to see who can build the best motorcycle.
Totally agree with you!
You and your Ol'Man are constantly delivering top quality bike reviews, glad to be a subscriber to your channel 🤝
Keep up God's good work, lad(s) 👍
Thank you very much, we are glad you have you onboard!
India and quality do not belong in the same sentence 😏😏😏 I lived in India for 12 months starting up a massive chemical facility. To put it in perspective in China same size facility would take us 6 months tops, india 12 months due to such poor construction quality….
@@colingoldthorpe5918 Construction delays were caused, perhaps, by communication bottlenecks, I suppose 😁
Seeing lots of positive reviews on this bike. Looks like a great commuter as well as a weekend exploring motorcycle.
It really is! I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did 👌🏻
Yep most of the good reviews are driven by the Triumph PR machine. Never under estimate the power of the PR machine. This is a Triumph in name only (Tino)

I am more of a sport bike guy, and I totally agree with you about the gold anodized forks. I know looks are subjective, but IMO that gold color just looks out of place on most street bikes. It has just become associated with performance suspensions. While I'm on a rant, I'm over the flat paint as well. And I've got an aviator (flat) grey Ducati Monster. But I had to get that to get the red wheels. Some day I'll give it a custom paint job. Great review. Some of the super pros are fun to watch, but you represent 99% of most of us riders.
Much appreciated, and great points!
I agree with you 100%. Dark grey forks would look better. And all paint should be semi-gloss or gloss, except for the exhaust pipe which could be flat grey or flat black. I hope that at some point Triumph or a third party offer a softer seat, maybe one inch thicker. Hopefully, someday someone will offer an instrument option with twin round gauges. I am 71 years old now and most often ride in town so this 400 looks like a much better fit for me than the 900 or 1200. I have loved Triumphs since I was 16 and this newest one has re-ignited my passion.
The ugly gold forks is most likely a deliberate choice to make customers opt for the more expensive speed twin. Companies are notorious for doing this with other products as well.
It's true that tastes differ... Personally, I think the GOLD suspension gives this bike its whole look, I love that part!
I just bought one of these for my wife. I’ve ridden a rocket for the last few years and I was pleasantly surprised with power and handling of the little speed 400. It’s a well built little bike that can well stand its own!
Did your wife not ride your rocket?
Amazing to see you on a launch! Great job editing in the tracking shots with the well considered pieces to camera we've all come to appreciate. All in all a perfect review!
As someone who is beginning to get arthritis in his hands the light clutch might be a welcome feel for someone like me.
Absolutely it would be perfect
I bought this bike a month back & it's my first bike. I'm enjoying the ride very much .
Your production is top notch! Thank you for your effort in providing us with excellent audio and video quality. It doesn't go unnoticed.
Thank you, much appreciated 👍🏼👍🏼
Your on board mike set up sounds top class..... really captured how good that bike sounds. Great review.
Thank you kindly!
Was looking forward to this. Thanks darcy..!
Great review as always, seen plenty of Triumph 400 reviews but you two always know how to hit the nail on the head.
Much appreciated!
Great to see you on a launch. You held your own well! A cracking review mate. Well done.
Many thanks 😊
Great video. Bike looks amazing. Great review. Cheers from Canada
Excellent review of this fantastic little Triumph 👌

Well done. Good wffort getting out for the lauch. Channel is growing nicly. 👍
Looks a great bike, loved the riding shots in the glorious mountains 🏔 and lovely sunshine ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Ive ridden both back to back. At 6'1" i found the scramble bike quite a step to get into the seat. I dont have good hips anymore. That and the high ish bars didnt feel that comfortable for me. A switch to the 400 street and what a difference. Easy to get on, and handled very well. Do you really need anything bigger...probably not. And the fact not mentioned is, the 400s fall into the cheap tax bracket .
I can definitely notice the video quality improvement. Great review!
Thank you! Used my usual camera, riding shots were done by triumphs film crew on some TV grade cameras!
Top notch review Darcy, really well presented thank you. Looks like Triumph have produced two winners with these bikes. 🙂👍
Thank you! I think they certainly have 👌🏻
Good review Darcy, thank you. Have seen these on the roads in the south east UK already, both types. Looks like its going to be a good seller for Triumph
I think it’s going to sell very well!
A couple of years ago I bought an RE 350 Classic. Riding home the heavens opened and yet after a few miles I realised I had the biggest grin going. I’m test riding the Triumph 400 tomorrow and your comment regarding the grin factor is spot on….😀
This is absolutely my experience. I rode a 650 and 350, ultimately buying the 350. It was just silly fun. I then bought the 650. I’m an idiot and sold both.

As a RE Fan boy I have to say the Speed 400 looks stunning & certainly looks more than £5k! Oddly I think the gold forks make it look better especially with the red&black tank! Is it better than the Hunter? Hmmm! Jury’s out!
I bought a 400x and will getting it in the USA next month
Congratulations!
Looks fantastic...apart from those awful decals on the fuel tank. Hopefully there will be other options in the future. The Scrambler looks just fine in comparison
Nice review, Look forward to seeing the scrambler review.
Its coming soon 👍🏼
Well done D’Arcy - another cracking review. Your enthusiasm shows how much the bike impressed you. I have to agree that as an entry level bike Triumph have absolutely smashed it.
Many thanks! 😊
Having not been riding long (I've only had my Royal Enfield Metor 350 for 8 months and my A2 Licence the same amount of time). I went to my local triumph dealer and tested the speed 400 and scrambler 400X. Needless to say, I've part exchanged my Royal Enfield and decided to go for the speed 400. I'm also 6 ft 1 , but I found the speed more comfortable and stable than the scrambler. But I think that's just down to rider preference. It was the extra power that really sold me. On the meteor, you really have to plan out your overtakes in advance, whereas the speed has a lot more pull and exudes confidence. Loved the meteor but think this bike will be mine for the forseeable.
love your channel... made me fall in love with the speedmaster and v7. I'd love to see you review the Guzzi California.
Great review!
Glad you think so!
looks like a fun small project bike.
used to see the single cylider honda hawk tricked out.
lower the chassis narrow drop bars with clip mirrors sport exhaust retune the engine better air breather tear out the restriction ecu/ better fuel delivery, cool lights chop up the seat to a single.lighter smaller wheels..a wheelie machine.
Lovely video. Can't wait for the scrambler video.
Its coming on Tuesday 👍🏼
Love these new steps from Triumph!
Us too!
good to see this channel going global
my current dream bike
That's made in india , now in India big competition in 400 cc range , yesterday Husqvarna svartpilen 401 launched which is even .modern looking than this.
Really enjoyed your video Mr Darcy .... Pressed the like button and have subscribed
Welcome aboard!
This owner remains impressed with how well controlled engine vibration is. I hear a single, but I am not getting the sort of vibes I always associate with thimpers. It is uncannily refined for single!
What a beauty… hope it becomes very popular.
👍✅😎❤️
I think it will 👌🏻
Another fantastic video well done, love the bike, could I take my test on one keep up the good work.
Thanks, you can take an A2 license test on it but you cannot ride it to the test. You would have to get someone to transport it there for you which is the catch 22 situation, the rules have brought about 👍🏼
I will wait for a proper double shocks Bonneville 400, Valencia and surroundings stunning as always.
great review....... all best 👍
Thanks 😊
I was waiting for a good review of this bike . I had a feeling that was going to be something special. And I am guessing it will be a comparable price in the States. That is a true entry bike as compared to the new Harleys at that size . At over 8k in the states good luck . Thanks for the great review but I have come to expect from you and your Dad
Thank you for the kind words! I think they’re onto a winner, hope it’s cheap in the states too 👍🏻
Superb machine! So tempting to get either this or the 400X as a second bike.
I would highly recommend it! The scrambler review will be out soon!
Looking forward to having a go on one of these puppies - great video as ever!
thank you very much! I’m sure you’ll love it 👌🏻
Dear Darcy Excellent Review you have done and Triumph 400 Speed and Triumph X are my favorite motorcycles because of their quality Design,Height and comfort while riding.i liked your video🎉
Thanks very much! The review of the scrambler will be coming soon
@@MrDarcy-OlMan I'm interested to hear your opinion on Triumph X
Thats much more like it should be. Just had a look at the specs, and its virtually twice the power of the RE350. Now, Im no boy racer (way too old for that stuff), but I always thought the RE was seriously lacking, whereas this little Triumph looks like an absolute ripper. Particularly for new riders.
Many years ago I had, as a second bike for city commuting, a Suzuki GS 450twin. At the time, Learners and provisional licence riders in Australia were limited to 250cc, and I thought that was a shame, as the little Suzi would have been perfect for a beginner to learn on. The rules here have changed a lot since then, but I still think that size and performance are ideal for newer riders, those whose main riding is commuting, or folks who are not interested in big powerful bikes, for various reasons. Looking at its specs, its virtually the same as the Speed 400. Brilliant 😊, and it looks gorgeous too 👍🏼
Looks ideal for an older rider with dodgy knees but I prefer the styling, riding position of an Enfield Meteor or classic .
Can't wait to See your 400X Review!
Its coming on Tuesday 👍🏼
Stunning bike at a great price. Even if you load it up it’s only going to cost you around £6.5k… I love the look of this… in my view, currently best in class.
Nice review too. 😊
It should fare pretty well on UK roads, I ride mine in India and the roads here are much worse at some places, this bike has one of the best suspension setups to deal with bumps and undulations.
Worse than the UK! Surely not?😂
170km with half a tank is impressive, I ride a Triumph Street Twin 2016 and from full until the fuel light comes on it does approximately 170km and sometimes about 160km, I agree on the forks, they should be Black and on another note, Triumph nailed it again when it comes to exhaust sound, it really doesn't need an aftermarket one. the exhaust muffler sounds good and has the right shape and size.
Was Darcy talking about km, or miles (perhaps even English Miles), though?
@@kwakithailand If I understood him well he was talking about km
@@ripmax333 170 km is s rather mediocre distance, though 😏.
Almost as ridiculous as a 48 Hugger (a bit more sporty as that Hugger, I suppose 😁).
@@kwakithailand it depends where you live I suppose, as I said I do that kind of distance with the 900cc Street Twin which it's not a powerhouse nor a High revving engine. But I do ride it in many traffic conditions mostly 1st to 3rd gear. So if this one does my same distance with just half a Tank, for me is not bad at all.
@@ripmax333 yes, you are absolutely right, mate 👍
It's depending on the traffic as well as short/long distance rides situation.
In BKK's stop 'n go traffic I'm getting 250 km out of a 19l tank, up at the Mekhong 350 km are realistically possible.
Keep them wheels rollin, mate 👍
Thanks for roughing it in the Spanish sunshine for we brits freezing at home, good to know its a bit more economical than my car, though. i would appreciate it if you could flesh outinformstion on accessories as i can see the radiator getting clogged up with mud from our bumpy country roads PDQ, i had a brief but very cold test ride recently and only saw 60mpg so was concerned about its proficiency as a commuter given Honda 500cc bikes can easily do that you made it sound fun though.
Looks amazing and the price point will hopefully encourage new riders.
Also, go for the black variation . looks much better than red one
Nice review! I'm battling between this and the Hunter, but I think this is the winner. I would have two 400cc bikes. Love my BV 400, and that will remain the long trips bike. Looking forward to the 400 X review.
@@christga100 sorry, the same Piaggio Beverly 400 in your side of the world. I'm in the US. Not sure why they renamed it.
I have the hunter. It’s a second bike for me, and I love it. However, it’s a second bike. I think I may opt for this if I just had the one bike.
Looks a nice sensible bike... well done Triumph
You mean done Bajaj, it is a Triumph only in name.
Great looking wheels fitted
Nice aren’t they 👍🏻
Good review of that triumph 400, I’m going to wait a little while for second hand ones to come on the market and then buy one.
Good plan 👌🏻
Great review Mark, it looks like you have found the perfect bike. I still haven't managed to do that after 52 years of searching.
Thank you! Not sure where you got the name Mark from though 😂
Sincere apologies, I will explain how I came up with that name. Just before watching your video, I had seen a review by Mark Pulling. In a strange way, that name stuck and I used it in my comments.
@@andrevanduren9045 I see that makes sense haha, no worries at all! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Great review thanks , after watching your scrambler 400x and trying it definitely not for me maybe I’ll test this one out and it might get me off my speed twin . Being 75 in April something lighter maybe 😊 regards Fred
Looks like a fun bike for commuting and a bit of weekend fun, would be a nice second bike to accompany a Bonneville.
Definitely!
I have a Hunter 350 and I would be interested in a comparison between Speed 400, Scrambler 400x and Hunter 350. Maybe you could do one in the near future. Thanks
I have an Interceptor which I love but am finding that I don't ride it often as its a pain getting it out of my garage due to the weight, I have been thinking of getting a lighter bike but was hesitant of the low power that the RE Classic puts out. When these Triumph 400's were announced I was hoping that the power would be significantly higher than the RE's and it appears so, I saw them at the NEC last year and the Scrambler really looked good. I was tempted by the new Himalayan but if the Scrambler review is similar or better than the steet 400 I will be looking for a test ride ASAP.
I would like it in blue with the seat from the scrambler I prefer the seat hight with my limited mobility and spine issues. Normally would go for the scrambler variety but it’s harder for me to ride these days. I’d have to try both seats but I like the look of the split seat on the scrambler
Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought the forks looked like they were out of left field. It's definitely a part's bin part. They could have painted something else to match it, or done the seat gold something.
Great value. When they black the engines why dont they use black bolts? forks look terrible and it needs a tail tidy but spart from that I'd consider one.
Just ordered a caspian blue😊
Excellent video! I was wondering if you noticed any vibrations at higher speeds, which I’ve heard from a couple of viewers.
I didn’t find it to vibrate much at all
Again, another great bike, another great review. Looks nice, just doesn't fit into my needs for this style of bike. But I would barrow it if I knew someone!😊
Fair enough!
The scrambler version of this bike, is along with the RE 350 classic and Honda CB/GB 350S/RS on my tight top 3 bikes to buy list. Which one will it be, will depend on the current prices once i make the purchase. They all have something unique to offer, and the price-to-pleasure and price-to-value ratios will the be key (as prices sometimes do vary from country to country. Of course the CB/GB 350 is yet to arrive in Europe, so i'll be waiting for the reviews on that too.
I'll stick with me 350 meteor... She's does all I need. Love it ❤
Should be a perfect bike for Switzerland, where the max speed is 80 km/h except for the highways.(120)
My wifes got one on order, should be here next week !!!
Awesome 😊
Can’t wait for them to hit the States.
I think the ideal engine next to my Harley would be Fatbob 114 for the small roads?? Greetings from Belgium, you are doing a great job by the way!
Defo 👌👌surprise of the year
The gold anodised forks stands out in the black color variant 😊
100bhp per litre is pretty good for a naturally aspirated single. Not crazy tuned so reliability should be ok (assumimg good design) and pretty economical. Hats off to Triumph for making such a 'sweet spot' bike.
Great Video, how would you go about changing the gold anodised forks.
I suppose you could get them powder coated, but would be nice if they came black anodised from factory
I want to go there and ride that.
Excellent review! I would love to own one of these bikes.
Only a moment before your video popped up, i had just finished watching a review of the same bike by UserNameKate. Were you both on the same junket for this?
Cheers and happy Easter, Glyn
Thank you 😊
Yes we were both on the same launch 👍🏼
Gorgeous design and color!
The gold goes well with red or blue and it’s specific.
Much better look than trident 660
As I’m 6’2” looking forward to the scrambler version review 👍
Awesome!
Question:
Can you install lowering links on these?
I’d like to be able to lower it by just an inch so I can flat foot it for extra confidence. Thank you.
Im not sure but I would assume so
I think that Triumph have got it right with the introduction of these new 400cc models. My preference is the Scrambler, and that is just because I'm 6'2".
I’m exactly the same, the scrambler was more comfortable at 6’1”
Great review, the Speed 400 isn't my kind of bike however it is good looking and if I was just starting out as a biker then it would certainly be on my list, I agree with you on the gold anodised forks , they are a little out of place with the bikes styling and don't do it any favours. I'm sure Triumph are going to take a lot of sales away from RE especially with younger riders, so all in all the new Speed 400 is probably a winner.
I think that'd be a great bike for me
The stock exhaust sounds pretty good, love the deep tone. Seems super smart, but I'm more interested in the scrambler version. I'm thinking of a sets of wheels one with knobbies and the other with normal street rubber.)
Watch out for the scrambler version coming out on Tuesday 👍🏼
Great review. As with the "BSA" l wouldn't lay out my money for a bike when l don't see it as what it's name on the tank suggests it is. I actually live 1 mile from a Triumph dealer but l've not seen one on the road, but very recently l've seen them in Cadiz, Las Palmas, Alicante, Seville & Malaga so they are certainly resonating with younger riders there. 👍
My clutch hand is wrecked by arthritis so a light clutch sounds appealing.
It would be great!
Thanks for this, most people are reviewing the Scrambler but that is too high. This one might tempt me to do my DAS.
I have reviewed both but thought I would edit this one first, I think this bike is a great reason for you to do your test and is very accessible and easy to ride. But also would be more than enough bike once you’ve gotten used to it!
@@MrDarcy-OlMan thank you
Great ride review, if you had to choose just one between the RE Classic 350 and Triumph speed 400 / scrambler 400x ,which one would it be .
For me it would be the scrambler 400x, I absolutely love the looks of the classic but personally the performance of the triumph is just much better
@MrDarcy-OlMan Thanks for sharing your thoughts .Cheers
I actually think this bike will do more damage to triumphs bonneville sales than RE’s. The triumph looks a great bike for the UK roads. The right price, light and economical. Well done triumph! (And just imagine if they release a spoked wheel retro version….)
One thing I’d say about RE 350’s though is at the moment MotoGB is selling off their stock of RE bikes at £1000-£1500 off list. That means a brand new Meteor 350 Fireball for £2999, which is significantly cheaper than the Triumph.
Love the gold forks.
Is It possible to compare it to the Eliminator? Whould be happy your toughts about It.
I'm not even a biker, but I want one !!!!!!
I think with all these great reviews on the 400s, the price is only going to go one way, and that's up. Better get your orders in quick.
