    the age old question: WHY WOULD I USE THIS WHEN I HAVE A SMARTPHONE?
    well.......
    1.so u can preserve phone battery.
    2.so u don't hafta have your phone on u 24/7
    (im probly the only human on earth who puts my phone away most of the day)
    3. u can leave it in the car or at bed. or in a particular location so u always have a music player near by
    4. keep it running so it stays connected to your bluetooth device and its still not killing the phone.
    5. quick videos while at doctor or wherever
    6. use it in a golf cart so u dont risk losing/destroying phone
    7. keep little kids quiet
    8. extra storage so u can keep certain things on it as well or instead of phone.
    9. if u lose it or it dies, there's no sleepless nights until its fixed or replaced.
    u can tell i've used a few mp3 players in my time

      I'm probably one of the few people who laments the loss of dedicated mp3 players. Especially the really oddball and unique designs that sony was putting out at the peak popularity of the devices.

      @@sjm4306 Stop acting like people don't use MP3 only devices.
      The popularity of MP3 players is still extremely high. There are a lot of manufacturers that are coming out with a new MP3 player every year.
      Sony devices are overrated and over priced. They do not want to lower their profit margin so they sell overpriced MP3 players that most people refuse to buy.

    • @sjm4306

      You can believe what you want but the numbers are stacked against what you are stating. I say this as someone who loves dedicated mp3 players, the vast majority of people my age just stream music on smartphones nowadays. I wish dedicated mp3 players would make a comeback but ignoring the trends wont make that happen.

    These reviews are good but one really needs a review that includes how it works later on down the road. See if it still works in a couple months or a year. Also testing the boundaries of its capability.

    Great review. I really enjoy using this player running VLC and Musiclot. I also didn't mind not having Google services as I have other devices for that. Really, my main reason for getting this was because I wanted a device just for playing my flac/alac/ape files through a Bluetooth reciever, which it does wonderfully.

  • @smithmal01
    @smithmal01 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nicely done. Very thorough. I've taken this for a spin and was also able to load different launchers on it which solved a lot of customization issues with this. Evidently PECSU will soon be releasing an updated model called the "G5" (PECSU indicated the release date will be late October/early November). The G5 model will incorporate Google Play into it's app package which I assume means they will pay for it to be Google Play licensed. My understanding is that the hardware will remain unchanged though PECSU did indicate the edges will be more rounded.
    Like you I prefer to use this as a Mp3 Player and really wish PECSU would have reduced the size to a 4" display and maybe made it a bit thinner and lighter. Portability for a Mp3 Player is key. Everyone in their mother has a phone which, more than likely runs laps around this player in terms of screen quality and hardware. There is no real reason to keep this player's screen 5" with a sub-HD screen resolution and then try to convince individuals to watch videos with it.
    My favorite Mp3 Player form factor is in the TIMMKOO Q5. It has a 4" screen with a plastic back making it significantly more more thin and light (and probably more durable to boot) compared to the PECSU P5S. Unfortunately the TIMMKOO Q5's hardware and screen is sub-par compared to this model. If PECSU would concentrate on making the best 4" Android type MP3 Player which emphasizes portability rather than pushing out this Frankensteinian MP3-Video hybrid Player and then try to hit a price point of $50 - $65 I'd think they'd have a hit. As PECSU gets closer to the $100 price range they also move closer to the pricepoint of true DAC Players which they definitely can't compete with.
    Like you I don't think this MP3 Player is worth $80. I'm thinking when the Q5 is released it will probably be priced in the $80-$90 range which makes it even more undesirable from a price standpoint. I guess we'll see.

    It's a shame that someone like Retroid doesn't offer an Android device that's basically their handheld minus control buttons and correspondingly smaller. The RP2+ costs just $20 more and is better in almost every way.

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That'd certainly be interesting but I have a feeling retroid wouldn't wanna risk competing with all the other low end android devices, they are making a comfortable profit on low/midrange android gaming devices with physical controls already.

    I grabbed this a few weeks ago and was not really impressed but the more I used it the more I became to like it. I primarily just use it for my Tidal and Spotify accounts, put in a 256gb card and have plenty of room to download a lot of music. The only 2 issues I really have are: 1 there is no real power being put out on the 3.5 headphone jacks, the sound I find to be very weak, I need to max the volume even on easy to drive IEM's. 2 is I can not find an decent EQ to try to help with boosting the sound a bit.
    I did find that I was able to download my headphone app and that really helps and the Bluetooth sound much better than the 3.5 output. How are you finding these same issues?

      if that, or, they sometimes offer the high end Sony players or whatever, that I wouldn't bother with. You're forced to go online to buy anything else, and you're
      generally better served doing that, since the prices are tons better online anyway. I haven't seen any players yet that take a 1TB SD card.

Another option I use is I just install the app from the google play store on my phone and use an apk backup app to extract the apk from my phone. Nope, even most higher end smartphones don't do video out over usb-c yet, don't expect to see a high end feature like that on a sub $100 mp3 player.

    Any music player that has nothing to do with google, android, app store, amazon, calculator, online account (such as spotify, itunes...)? Just a device with high battery capacity, blue tooth, waterproof (preferably), playlist... Like a k7 player that didn't have a calculator or a phone.
    Otherwise, I can always buy a cheap used android phone from ebay.

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hard to find a player that hits all of your requirements and isn't android. Not many dedicated mp3 players are still made that have their own proprietary os and have higher end features beyond those cheap sansa clip style models. If you really dont want apps just disable or dont use them even on an android device.

    can it use a A2 1TB micro sd card?

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it can use it, but probably not to the full speed an a2 card is specced to (the limitation would probably be the speed of the connection between the sd card slot and the cpu in this case).

      Download kindle app apk onto internal memory, open file browser, click kindle app apk to install, follow onscreen directions, it's as easy as that. This runs standard android, if you need step by step directions you can easily search for a tutorial video. This is a review of this specific product, not a tutorial or how-to video.

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much any modern android device will play wav's. This is an android device, file compatibility is really up to whatever app you are using. Basically if you use a music app that is compatible with wav files then this will play wav files.

      I'm sure you could compile a newer version of android and manually install but given the hardware I expect that there could be performance issues making it a moot point.

      Phones stopped using sd cards for people who have collected large amounts music and spent countless hours setting up playlists and don’t have time, or care to do it over again on Spotify, or whatever else. So yes, those people are going back to MP3 players.

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on the size of your music library and if you want to listen to lossless or compressed music. In general I'd suggest at least a 64GB card (class 10 or higher for speed). Honestly though given how cheap cards are nowadays you might as well just get a 128 or 256gb card as the price difference will literally be like $10.

      If your music is unprotected then yes you can drag music from itunes into the usb drive window for this mp3 player. It wont directly sync inside of itunes of course though (apple would never allow a non-ipod/iphone to do so).
