- Driving a manual car on steep hills requires good coordination of the cars controls - otherwise the car can hesitate, stall, or even roll back. We will need to have a good hill start technique, carefully select the best gear to use, and try to avoid coasting downhill. I just want to say thank you for the videos you put on here. I had a 2 month break without any driving lessons and only had a 3 hour lesson the day before my test (today),and during those 2 months I would watch all of your videos everyday and it felt like I was having a driving lesson. In older cars coasting downhill(high speed and long time) had the chance to stall the engine when going into gear.
Never happened to me, as I was taught to never do it, but my father did an accidental demonstration.
Going downhill on the Highway at over 100 km per hour, when trying to go back into gear the car stalled and he had to start it again, which takes time during which you have very little control over the car.

Steeps hills is by far a challenge my test this year in august is in Greenock scotland not had more than 50% pass rate in ten years it’s all up hill and brutal but luckily when I first started I did my lessons in fort William that’s close to Ben Nevis some of the biggest hills in the country there so starting on hills is like second nature but ironically my last test i failed was during school hours and got distracted silly enough so lost the bite and stalled the car so got a serious mark down for moving off

Hi, thank you for this video. I found it looking for an answer how to deal with very steep hill with a hair pin bend at the bottom of said hill? It's a nightmare for me :-(. Any advice, please.
Have you tried using 1st gear for the hairpin?

We have been using our automatic car more recently, but unless we are talking about the use of the clutch or gears then everything else is relevant to any car 👍🏼

I have a problem changing gears smoothly when accelerating on an uphill...the car jerks and loses power.
Before changing gears uphill, we go a little faster than normal. This gives the car extra momentum to prevent the car losing too much speed during the gear change. This video may help:

@@AdvanceDrivingSchool bit confused about some things. if we are supposed to shift up at 3000rpm does that mean: if im driving at 60kmph at gear 5, i have to reduce speed to shift up? or is that only for downshift?

Take for instance you're going at the 5th gear and you are to suddenly change your gear to 2nd or 1st one, how can you do?

In the UK we have to:
1: Apply for a provisional driving licence
2: Pass the Theory Test
3: Pass the Practical Driving Test
Both tests are challenging for a new driver, but this ensures a reasonable minimum standard of driving before new drivers can drive on their own.

That depends on how quick a learner the person is. My record is both within 1 week(!) but 3-6 months is more typical.

before steep downhill i brake and lower the gear and go slow is that good whether its motorcycle, car. But my friend told use brake no need to lower gear rely on brake . Which is correct.
That depends on how steep the hill is - for steeper hills we would select a lower gear to increase engine braking as you suggest. However for a more gentle hill we wouldn’t bother as the brakes should be fine. 👍🏼

What about going back? If I want to go back, will the car go easily or do I need some gas to help it not to go forward?
If you mean reversing uphill, then yes it works exactly the same - set the gas, bite the clutch, then release the handbrake. 👍🏼

Hey l advanced driving school I remember commenting months ago just before august but I failed my driving test for the 6th time can you help on a steep gradient that would even be painful to walk how many revs do I need to make sure I’m not gonna take off
That would depend on the car. However about 1500-2000 rpm is usually enough - so long as the driver is careful to engage the right amount of clutch bite gently. It’s usually too much clutch that causes the stall, rather than too little revs. Just go somewhere steep and practice 👍🏼
Lessons
In my automatic polo, I’ve got to hill start 🤣. The auto hold works for three seconds and then rolls back. Useless function.
Our manual Ford Fiesta does that - so we switched it off and prefer to hill start manually!
Advance Driving School but it’s still a manual! The new DSG gearboxes are horrendous. As a first time driver I wanted to avoid hill starts! But now I’m confident on the road. I never went out by myself for a good 5 months until I was ready!
