I had the same experience. In fact, I suddenly became so stupid, but immediately I went home that day I searched for a video on hill starts and boom, I got it. Some instructors can be really horrible.
I had no idea automatic cars could roll down a hill until I got my own. For the first few days, I was convinced that something was wrong with the car and contemplated returning it to the dealership 😂😂.. But after I found this video, I knew everything would be okay. Thank you sooo much for sharing this. 🇿🇦 🇿🇦 🇿🇦
Same WhatsApp group!😂 Moving from an Ford Ikon 1.6 manual to a Suzuki Swift 1.2 auto which rolls back, I was beginning to think that something was wrong with it. And also that it doesn't have power... until I watched this video. 😂
Thank you , I've been driving for years and never experienced this on a hill until now rolling backwards on a hill, and it scared the heck out of everyone... i will definitely practice this technique thank you... because this was a scary situation
This is one of the best videos I have watched on the hill start assist for automatic cars and is really helpful. Just one thing, in the case of auto hold, this will not work on steep hills as this is supposed to work on plane surfaces usually. For that, you need to use your electronic parking brake.
U can do it without using handbrake, whenever ur on an incline , just use both the feet. Hold the break with the left feet and mildly press the accelerator with left then release breaks.
Very useful video and very well explained along with the bonus tips. This was never asked in the driving/road test in the US, and I guess, hence, never taught.
I've have this and my god scared me as it's my first car. Even had it checked at a garage during ti's service and they couldn't tell me what was wrong. But nope, car is perfectly fine, just my technique. What I am concerned about is NONE of my instructors told me this was a thing!
If you can provide video shoot of AMT or AGS drive on uphills & downhills with proper gearshift places like Uttarkhand or Darjeelng steep hills. Thank you.
i drive an automatic car with a hand break, when going behind traffic or traffic lights do i have to put my car into P and then pull up the hand break or do i put it into N and then pull up the hand break ? Thank you !
If you have your left foot on the brake pedal while trying to accelerate uphill, you will have both feet on two pedals. This can be dangerous if you accidentally confuse the accelerator with the brake pedal. Using the handbrake eliminates this issue.
Definitely. That's something that you can look for when doing a hill start. I just didn't want to make it too complicated. Usually if you press the accelerator gently and notice the head of the car is lifted, the rpm is around 2000
Well, handbrake is not mandatory to press when pulling it. What would you do if your student did that? Would you let him do that or you are going to tell him to always press it even though it is really not required.
Putting the handbrake up when pulling in is required. I and all the driving examiners always ask the students to put their handbrake up when stopping the car beside the road
In this video, she pressed the silver button while pulling up the hand brakes. That's not required. Button press is only required to release the hand brake. That's what he is referring to
@@punya121 To properly engage the handbrake, you need to press the silver button and hold it until the handbrake is fully up, then release the button. You should not hear any noise when engaging the handbrake. Failing to press the button can cause wear and tear to the handbrake. However, this is not marked down in a driving test.
Very informative video, even for drivers who haven't driven much on steep hills. Quick question, is it okay to leave the gear on D when doing hill start?
saw some people using their left foot on the break pedal while building up the rpm, instead of utilizing the handbreak... is this an acceptable method during driving tests?
Hi there, no this is not an acceptable method. Left foot is not to be used when driving an automatic car. Using the left foot in such situations during the driving test is a mark down.
@@RYU-zp9ty That's right. That's because some cars have footbrakes instead of handbrakes. If your car has a handbrake, you will be using the handbrake for hill starts. Using the left foot is not a fail. Some examiners just mark it down as a minor driving error
U can do it without using handbrake, whenever ur on an incline , just use both the feet. Hold the break with the left feet and mildly press the accelerator with left then release breaks.
This is only possible in automatic transmission cars, not in manual stick shifters. Also, if the stop is longer than a few seconds, you would ideally want to engage the handbrake instead of tiring out your foot.
Please don't be a left foot braker in an auto unless it's an emergency. If you do one or more adverse things can happen. Firstly you're training yourself to use both feet which can result in applying both pedals in the wrong situation. Secondly, it may trigger a different mode of operation in newer cars. It called brake override & the engine is detuned to favour brake pedal input from switches. This means the drivability will be affected like loss of power. And finally, left foot braking is an error in the Qld practical driving test believe it or not.

My instructor didn't teach me this. He was only good at shouting. Thanks for this useful lesson. 🎉

Glad you didn't return your car 😄. Yes, many people think hill start is only for manual cars
We are a manual gearbox nation😂. We ouchea paying school fees.
Me too, always struggling when packing up my driveway as it is quite steep, glad I found this video
You are the only guy who explained how it works..great man!

I've been freaking out on a hill cos the automatic rolls back! My first automatic after a geared car. Thank you so much!
You're welcome Joanna. I'm glad you found this video helpful. Thank you for being here 🙂

I have this doubt from years. Now cleared.. Dude u r the only guy explain this in youtube nd in google👍

Thank you Saad. Auto Hold is actually supposed to work on hills only. It is designed to engage when the car is stopped on an incline
I was beginning to think that there was something wrong with my Swift until I watched this video. Well explained, thank you!
Excellent channel btw, definitely among the best I've seen on TH-cam. Clear, thorough, informative, high quality production
Thank you for the feedback. Trying to keep the quality high 🙏🌹
That’s exactly what I was looking for!👍🏻 And a big thanks for the tips for the cars with a foot break!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Anastasia. Glad you found this helpful 🙂
Exactly ❤
Thanks
You're welcome, and thank you for super thanks 😊 🙏 🌹
Ive only ever driven manual never knew a auto could roll
U can do it without using handbrake, whenever ur on an incline , just use both the feet. Hold the break with the left feet and mildly press the accelerator with left then release breaks.
I like this method more
Please edit , accelerator with right.
Thanks for you the advice. Found out how to get off my steep driveway.
You're welcome Fiona. Glad this video could help a bit
Meant thank for the Advice
Wow I've learnt something new. About hill start at a stopping sign. I only learnt to do when I'm completely stop
Very useful video and very well explained along with the bonus tips. This was never asked in the driving/road test in the US, and I guess, hence, never taught.
Thanks sir very straight forward . I know what to do now
I just simply use both feet (left foot on the brake) to be honest but good technique in the video especially if you're driving a manual transmission.
That’s exactly what I was looking for!👍🏻
Me too!
I have bill start assist but I’ve suddenly got so nervous
Thanks for your good and useful driving lessons.
You're welcome Pooya 🙂
Thank you so much.your videos are very helpful.I passed my test.
Ah this is great to hear. You're welcome and congrats 🥳
Very good teaching.
Thanks 👍
Hi, is the brake hold switch the same as electronic brake parking function?
It is. The worst thing in automatic vehicles is the electronic brake. I would prefer an actual handbrake. Gives more leverage.
When waiting at a stop sign or red light, and you have the hand brake on, do you keep your foot on the brake pedal while waiting?
No. On the accelerator and ready to do the hill start when you're about to move
Best lesson for learner
My cars hand brake is a button, how do i use it
technology has pampered drivers a bit too much 😅 stay safe out there
What makes the car rolling back wards on a steep hill, can you please write the answer please
Gravity
Nice video, thanks❤❤❤❤
You're welcome ❤
What if your handbrake is automatic button or foot
The answer is in the video
I've have this and my god scared me as it's my first car. Even had it checked at a garage during ti's service and they couldn't tell me what was wrong. But nope, car is perfectly fine, just my technique. What I am concerned about is NONE of my instructors told me this was a thing!
will this not damage the hand brake? thank you
No, it won't. That's what the handbrake is for
What if the car has a foot operated parking break? Thus no handbreak
Watch the video at 5:56
This method is same for all types of automatic gear box??
DCT, CVT, AMT or DSG..??
Yes, same
Thank you Dear Sir 🎉❤ you helped me a lot with this video
You're welcome. I'm glad to hear that 😊
Exactly what i was looking for thanks in a million god bless❤
You're welcome Krishna. Glad to hear the video was helpful 🙂
If you can provide video shoot of AMT or AGS drive on uphills & downhills with proper gearshift places like Uttarkhand or Darjeelng steep hills. Thank you.
Hello. Buts wouldn’t frequent use of handbrake cause any problems in car? What is the impact on engine and tyres??
No that doesn't cause any damage to the car. The handbrake is to be used in situations like these
i drive an automatic car with a hand break, when going behind traffic or traffic lights do i have to put my car into P and then pull up the hand break or do i put it into N and then pull up the hand break ? Thank you !
You don't need to change the gear to P or N. Just keep it in D and put your handbrake up
very helpful
does this method apply when reversing uphill in an automatic?
It certainly does.
This was helpful, thank you
You're welcome. Glad you find this helpful 🙂
I didnt know automatics do roll back on a hill. Mine doesn't, I would assume its because it has quite a lot of torque right from the low rpms.
What if we have automatic turn on and off handbrakes specially in modern cars ?
That's okay. You can have that feature turned on, and you wouldn't need to worry about hill start
Why can't you press the brake pedal with your left foot instead of using the parking break?
If you have your left foot on the brake pedal while trying to accelerate uphill, you will have both feet on two pedals. This can be dangerous if you accidentally confuse the accelerator with the brake pedal. Using the handbrake eliminates this issue.
I don't use the handbreak i use the accelerator
Awesome 👏👏👏👏

Good
how about checking the rpm to 2000?

This guy is epic!!!!
hand brake doesn't work on steep hills
They sell Suzuki Swift in Australia 😮
Very informative video, even for drivers who haven't driven much on steep hills. Quick question, is it okay to leave the gear on D when doing hill start?
Yes, if you stop temporarily on a steep hill, eg. at a stop sign or behind a red light, you need to leave the gear on D and do a hill start 🙂
The handbrake needs to be pulled before releasing the brake!

You can just put the gear to P and then pull up the handbrake
Hill start fear not as easy as eating a doughnut 😂
😂
thanks
You're welcome 🙂

i need a solution for footed hand-brake car😂
great job
Thank you
cars nowadays have this auto-park that you can turn-on and it will do the same thing....
Automatic easy to drive.
Im learner's manual car hope get my p license soon , i have troubles parallels parking.😢
What about downhill?
There is no need for a hill start downhil
