You buy your friends bowling balls and declare that you guys don't do enough bowling. You declare the next group activity to be a bowling night (they will be paying since you got the balls), and that the group should come out to support real bowlers like yourself who are too often marginalized from activities.
Nobody shows up. Other people in the group pointed out that, because of your attitude, nobody will show up. You declare that these people are anti-bowling bigots who purposely worked to sabotage your evening with criticism in order to tear down innocent bowlers like yourself.

The funniest part (to me) about an organization like Disney blaming two popular TH-cam personalities for _The AcoSHYTE_ (or any of the other recent bombs) tanking is that by making that claim, they are admitting that two popular TH-cam personalities are better at marketing their products/ideas than a multi-billion dollar a year entertainment giant. If your multi-million dollar marketing campaigns can be completely undone by two dudes making videos in their basements, your problem(s) have absolutely nothing to do with two dudes making videos in their basements...
Yes, I'm aware Gary and Drinker have dedicated areas in their homes to make videos, and those areas aren't necessarily in their basements.

Exactly. And their combined sub count is less than 5 million, with a combined view count of per video per day being less than 1 million. Against a multi-billion dollar company. Their show wasn't just weak, it should be treated as a case study for generations to come why you don't "make tv shows for yourself" as a director while at the same time deliberately butchering it because you hate the fans, like they said they did and do. It should be treated as a crime against humanity.

As a fan of classic Star Trek, the 5 act structure imposed by an hour of broadcast television with commercials made for compelling television. You had the short teaser at the beginning to grab you, then all the mini cliffhangers at the end of each act with a resolution at the very end. Cynically this structure was there to get you to watch the ads and come back for the next ad, but now that I have everything on disc without the commercials it’s an objectively a good way to tell a story. Something interesting MUST happen every 8 minutes or so. Art always needs some limitations to be great, some constraint.

Also, where appropriate, alternate between an A & B storyline: to keep interest, provide tension or comic relief, use more of the cast of characters (and maybe use one plot for longer-arc character development), or even set up for an ending that combines the two threads in an unexpected conclusion.

Why haven't we seen studios make shows to air on TV, but then have a few of those cut scenes, a bit of extra content available on their exclusive streaming network?
    - They'd get content for their monetizable networks,
    - They'd get a bigger audience for the show, and
    - They'd have new demand for their streaming network to see the extra parts missed on TV.
The model is the same as all those director's cut and unrated versions of movies. People paid to see them once, then the extra content at minimal cost pulls in their cash a second time.
Likewise, remember all that great content that used to be on DVDs? The making of documentaries, the commentary tracks, the behind the scenes, outtakes, cut scenes, etc.--why aren't studios filling their streaming service with all those goodies?
And then there's the Disney Vault--you could only get certain movies at certain times, and the constrained supply created demand. Why isn't Disney pulling a lot of content off perpetual hosting on D- and making 'special events' each month where certain classics and other specials can be watched during a limited release of two months only. It would people talking about what would be available coming up, and create perpetual incentives to start service or not cancel--i.e., you wouldn't be able to binge all you want in one month and cancel.

I remember when other giant studios tried to vanquish the juggernaut that was Disney. Disney laughed at those other studios for even trying. Restrictions often improve art. Poetic forms that require meter and rhyme force the poet to work harder. This often makes for better results than free verse.
Making a compelling story for broadcast where you can't just drop you pants, often literally, is harder and forces creative writing. Often the worst things you get from an artist are when they are successful enough to demand "creative control".

As for the mini cliffhangers, I am immediately reminded of Star Trek: tng when the camera would zoom in on Picard frowning while ominous music plays. Watching those episodes on DVD, the mini cliffhangers are kind of quaintly unnecessary. But during the original broadcast, they were very effective.

People who refuse to listen to criticism will never grow or hone any craft. If someone's ego is so big that they refuse to listen to any criticism, constructive or not, they will never learn from their mistakes. That is why some writers today keep writing badly developed stories and characters.
In their minds, they are never wrong. In their minds only those who they disagree with politically are the ones whom dislike their work. It is one of the traps of their ideology. To them only the morally virtuous support them and the immoral disagree with them. It is easier to discard the opinions of those they deem immoral.
I really do believe a lot of it is their own arrogance, the social media bubbles they are in and their ideology. As BIll Burr said, many people today really need to 'step out of their comfort zone and expand their circle of friends to realize that not everyone thinks the way they do'. Even people who agree with you on one thing will often disagree with you on another.
Debate and discussion with those we disagree with gives a chance for all parties involved to learn and grow. As a writer that is very important, in my opinion. I think people will be more successful writing what they know the more they know. Even if you agree to disagree you know a perspective exists outside of your own and hopefully come to at least understand why that perspective may exist in the first place.

Yep. Nice simple stuff (as a Boomer). In the UK probably the most popular cop serial is the most lightweight which is now in four franchises, the main two are Death in Paradise (Season 14 and 2 spin offs) and Midsomer Murders (now in Series 23), they're fairly lightweight very straightforward shows (despite the murders).
All the gritty tough dramas populated by strong women and ethnic characters who are all good and white people who are all bad (it is that unsubtle), they don't get beyond Season 1 often.
This apparently doesn't seem to get through to the people who make TV. The shows they want to make sink without trace. The ones they are basically forced to make because there'd be riots if they were cancelled go on forever.
Nobody cares about ethnicity (Death in Paradise is set in the Caribbean, so most of the cast is black anyway). What they object to is it being pushed at gunpoint.

You do make an excellent point about how the restrictions that constrained commercial television writers in the past made for more disciplined, and thus better, writing.
I think of some of the timeless shows of the classic TV era, where you literally wanted every member of the family to like something about your show, or at least to not be scandalized by it.
Even adult themes can be presented in a way that goes right past the kids but hits adults right in the gut.
The irony of streaming whatever length they want on the one hand, and now the routine R-rated television where there are no restrictions on content, has reduced the art to not even a pale reflection of what it once was.
Now that activists like LH can just blow through a billion dollars and throw any crap on the screen they want, and insult not only your values, but your intelligence in the process, leads me to think we've entered the Dark Ages of American entertainment.

This was my first exposure to you and your style. I'm sold, I subscribed! I have watched Her critic and Critical Drinker for two to three years because I respect their point of view and how they support their arguments. I see a similar ability with you, hence my subscription. I appreciate your member berries of tinsel town greats and industrial heavyweights, no need to Google here. Looking forward to the next installment and checking out your past library of vids. Grazie!

Like haters have to hate, flying monkeys have to fly, Chato! I'm glad that Dr. Who is only on Disney Plus these days. If it was still on the ABC (that's the Australian Broadcasting Corporation) or available on DVD, it would have broken my heart according to AZ and Gary. Who's judgement I trust, by the way. It was our generation of Dr. Who fans that kept the show on life support during its long 18-year hiatus. It was us, not those new breed of Whovians who bought the VHS cassettes, the DVDs, the books, the magazines, and went to all those cheesy overpriced conventions. We had skin in this game. Only now to be told not to watch but go out and touch some grass. So I would like to thank Disney and the BBC for inadvertently doing true fans an enormous favour by limiting the damage to this streaming contrivance. It's so much better to remain ignorant than ruining a lifetime of happy memories!

Surprised that anyone who is officially a part of Disney would give acknowledgement to the Drinker and Nerdrotic. Truly a complement.
