    How can I custom the url? Or do I need to buy a domain name still and how can I apply to GitHub pages?

    • @LearnWebCode
      @LearnWebCode  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      If you don't like the URL / domain that GitHub Pages gives you, you'll need to purchase a domain through your favorite registrar company, but then yes, you can point it towards your free GitHub Pages site. Here's the GitHub instructions on how to do that: docs.github.com/en/github/working-with-github-pages/configuring-a-custom-domain-for-your-github-pages-site

    • @DRocksRecords
      @DRocksRecords 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only thing that cant be free is the custom domain name like mysite.com but its only like 12dollars per year! While hosting is normally about from 60 to 350 for small sites!

    I'm really gratefull for this man existence and the content he produces. I occasionally talk about him to my family, imagine ! Brad doesn't know if I exist, and my family just care about my carrier.
    From experience, I hate academic teachers. I always meprise the value they think they offer, I was always the one who, sometimes, make new things out of courses that the teacher never considered or found out.
    But the way this man talks to an apprentice logical mind is, very rare.

Yep, GitHub Pages is amazing, and with the popularity of "Static Site Generators" nowadays... it means the only cost of hosting a simple site is just buying a cheap domain with another company and then configuring it with GitHub: docs.github.com/en/github/working-with-github-pages/configuring-a-custom-domain-for-your-github-pages-site

    So, as far as I understand, we need the Git Desktop software if we want to update the site. Can we update it by replacing the file with a new one? We can publish files on GitHub, right? So, the software is optional?
    I wonder: is there a size limit? Is the project added on the Desktop saved on the computer? I am not sure my laptop will handle that. I hope there is a cloud. Can we change the name file within the desktop tool?

In such a scenerio, how to restore a local WordPress from a github backup or WordPress backup? can we still log in using the same credentials. I mean how do I add content to the same github site that was connected to the local wordpress before the pc had a crash. To be more specific, I mean how do we go about the database, log in and most importantly, how do I make sure that my previous posts are not lost or the permalinks are not hampered.

If you check the main overview page for your repository on GitHub, does it contain a file named "index.html" and can you double check that it is spelled exactly that way including lowercase letters? Also, you might try pushing a minor change up to GitHub just to give it another chance to trigger the process of publishing it on GitHub Pages.

Or you can try a hard refresh on your page's url (hold shift key while clicking reload icon). Or I have seen before that with a brand new repo, not always, but it can sometimes take about 10 minutes before your site url starts working.

    • @LearnWebCode
      @LearnWebCode  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As Bir Singh mentioned, you can only host front-end code on GitHub pages. However, there are all sorts of "Static Site Generator" projects that can take your local copy of WordPress, even if you have thousands of pages, and automatically generate HTML files which GitHub Pages could host. That would actually be ideal from a page-load speed and security standpoint, but you'd lose any interactivity (user registration, comments, etc...). I'll cover more about these topics in the "Servers" chapter 🥳

    How can it be free if I have to sign up for GitHub Pro for $4.00 a month?

      Don't sign up for the Pro version, the Free plan is more than enough for just about everything unless you're working with a development team for big clients/projects.

      Since we're working with simple static sites, for now, I'd recommend Googling for "Formspree" and trying their free plan.

      Rajendra ku. Mohanty - Brad’s Udemy “Learn JavaScript: full-stack from scratch” course is a very helpful course to take after the 10-days of JavaScript free intro.

      It's probably because your repository name is too long, shorten it and see what happens. It worked for me thankfully.
      Or maybe you don't have "index.html", which is the homepage.
