New 2012 MacBook Air - amzn.to/KDwmpt
This is my 2012 MacBook Air Review. This review covers the recently released 13" Ivy Bridge MacBook Air for 2012. This review aims to address the common question of the MacBook Air vs. the MacBook Pro (recently updated & featuring a retina display). The newest version of the MacBook Air represents one of the best all-around notebooks on the market. I hope you enjoy my review of the 2012 13" MacBook Air.
Also, don't forget to check out my MacBook Air 2012 Unboxing video here - • MacBook Air 2012 Unbox...
who's watching this in 2017? I'm watching this from my macbook air mid 2012. Still runs great!
Stay in 2017, you don't wanna come to 2020. I promise you.

Finally, a review where somebody isn't afraid to state their opinion and then follow up with an explanation.
Watching this in 2018... and considering the 2012 macbook air lol
Edgar dude me too! Lol
Same lol
Me too, debating over an older MacBook or new Chromebook for my son in 8th grade, any opinions welcomed, not to techy
Lol I’m in 2020, fucking 2020
I love the very casual, yet still informative format of this review. Excellent video as always Lew!
You're the one who really got me into unboxings and reviews on TH-cam! I am pretty successful on TH-cam because of u!
i like this casual honest and opinionated style of review. thanks
Excellent review, this is the type of reviews I like, not technical stuff I don't even understand.
This was a good, informative casual review, the kind I can easily follow and learn something from.
You're welcome, happy to have you as a subscriber.
I can relate to what he's saying. I'm a photographer and on my old HP7 I just ran Lightroom 3 and did occasional web browsing and had my iTunes running. I'm sure the MacBook air can handle that. It's much lighter and portable and I love that it being so small it's still very capable. All these speed tests and boot up times are flash without substance. It's all about real-world usage.
I bought the base MacBook Air 13" two days ago. I was debating between this and the retina display pro model. Completely agree with your views.
after doing a lot of research i just got my first mac. Its the new 2012 13'' air. The only upgrade i got was a bust of ram from 4 to 8 gigs. This video helped a lot in giving me some good idea about why i want the new air, and justifying the price. thanks a lot.
This video is why Lew is the best out there. He's not just pimping a product because it's a huge brand. He is speaking to the casual PC user and given them an honest opinion as to wether you need to spend extra money that many do not have. He could just say buy the best available. But instead he gives you an intelligent breakdown of what you get for your money. Thanks Lew!
Well said
I like honest reviews from people that know what they're talking about!
Should I buy it now - October or wait for the next gen. Does is run parallels 8 smoothly ? Nice reviewers
Amazing review! Could perhaps mention the implications of upgrading the processor to i7 and its cost-performance ratio.
This is word for word exactly what i was looking for.
I just got my macbook air 11 inch 2 days ago and i love it! it is a excellent device for everything that you would like to do on the internet and other uses! The only problem that i have with the mac book air is that it doesn't have a DVD drive and it only has 2 usb ports. other than that it is amazing. Thin, light, and new!
Nice video, I like the camera angle, it makes the videos look very professional. Just please zoom in a bit
Awesome review. Really enjoyed the lay back style.
Hey man great video. I have a question, do you think that not having a CD/DVD drive is a negative? I currently have a 13" Macbook Pro 2009 Model and I want to sell it so I can buy the new 2012 Macbook Air 13" and like you said I will upgrade to a 8GB RAM. Is that a good idea? I still don't know if its ok to trust Macbook Air's. Do you think I will miss the CD/DVD drive? Thanks for the help!
If anyone doubts the Air, I'm Running Logic Pro and Maschine, doing professional music production on my macbook air 13 inch base model and its really fast. Greatest laptop I ever had. Haven't tried video editing on here yet though.
great presentation. i just got a Macbook Air 13" for my birthday and it was really what i wanted. the macbook pro retina is just too much computing power for me, and at twice the cost i couldn't justify it for my needs.
I bought this MBA two months ago when I decided to switch from Windows computers, and I am really happy with it. It starts up so fast and light but the battery doesn't last for about 7 hours as they claim but comfortable around 5 or 5 and half hours. This model is sold for 1200 in the US and here in Sweden it starts from around USD1,650. You guys are lucky there in the US...
Some good advice here that won it for me! my macbook air 256gb should arrive tomorrow! You could also say if you want a really good display, go for a thunderbolt display which is alost a third the price of a retina pro and it also makes your laptop a desktop when you plug it in.
Keep it up!
Great review. I am kinda of a know-nothing in this field but this cleared up everything. Taking your advice and going with a 13inch MBA with 8GB RAM. Thanks a bunch bro.
this video was great and informative, havent made my decision between pro and air yet, but it really helped, thank you!
lew you are the best review guy on the youtube
This didn't feel like a review at all, you normally get blasted with figures (which lets face it you could find on the website if you were interested). This was really relaxed, I hope more reviews begin to adopt this style. Thanks!
would you recommend it as a "Main-Computer"??
Or do you think it's not really powerful enough?
Nice Vids btw ;)
who is watching this in 2017?
Urrr, you I'm in 2018.
In 2018
Aww yiss
Right there with ya, dabating over older MacBook vs new chrome book for my son in 8th grade, any opinions welcomed, not to techy
In 2024😂
after i saw all your videos about macbook ,,i just bought it few days ago,,, love it so much,,,, after many years with windows,,, wow,, what a new world i am coming in with Macbook....... my question is,,,do i have to download antivirus on macbook ,,,,??? thank you Sir,,, very nice review
Great review man, am getting one for my bday but I never knew which one to get n av watched loads of vids n it's urs the only one that made complete sense it helped me make a decision. Thnx for ur help :)
Great Review! A little opinion is great when you are doing a review. Thank You for the information about the Macbook Air.
Great review, more so because you recommend stuff and don't just list specs and show benchmarks (although I'd like to see some of the latter comparing other ultrabooks with the new air)
Do a comparison between the old and the new MacBook air?
Is the better power worth buying one of the newer models?
For average users.
Or do they better go with the old model, which would mean that they could spend less money...
Hey Lew, this was an awesome opinionated review. I have a late 2007 white macbook and was looking to upgrade, but I heard rumors of a retina thinner 13inch macbook pro coming out in sept/oct. Do you think I should go with the air or wait for the pro?
i just got my new macbook air today. I find this laptop very useful. for some reason it is slow sometimes. but other than that it is a excellent laptop. ur videos helped me decide!
I was thinking of getting the base model 2012 MacBook Pro (w/o Retina) and replacing the hard drive myself, with an SSD. However, I think you just sold me on the MacBook Air 13" Base Model, the form factor, sleek design and lighter weight will go much further than the MacBook pro which in my opinion is starting to look rather clunky. Thanks for the awesome review!
Great review!! Thanks dude!
Is MBA 13" 256GB SSD, 4GB RAM sufficient for stuff like these:
Facebook
TH-cam
Email
Parallel Desktop
iPhoto, iMovie
Microsoft Office
Some minor gaming occasionally
Should I upgrade to 8GB RAM???
Please advice... Thanks!!
Something he failed to mention also, is that the ssd's in the new air's are around twice as fast as the previous stock, giving you a read speed of +400MB/s which will honestly make a difference to general purpose use and loading applications - with that, the great form factor and the increased screen resolution, it makes the air far better than the equivalently priced pro.
Yeah.... I was going to buy a Macbook Pro or Air earlier this month but I just found the HP Envy 3277nr. That thing is a beast. 2.3GHz Intel Core i7 3rd gen - 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 17.3" Full HD 1920x1080 display - Blu ray player - Beats audio - backlit keyboard - Bluetooth - 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN - 4 USB 3.0 ports, and an HDMI port. It's only $1,300. It's a no brainer.
great video! i know you were discussing the retina pro but what about the 13" macbook pro. i wanna buy a new mac what do you recommend? the baseline 13" macbook air with 8gb ram or the baseline macbook pro with 8gb ram
Thanx for your effort. I liked your casual review.
Just ordered the same model. Can't wait!
I'd suggest the Pro because of the added oomph in the hardware so you'll be able to run music production software easier. I probably would suggest going for the non-retina one as well because if it's music production, chances are you're going to need to put a few CDs in there from time to time.
Can you make a video comparing this 13" Air and the 13" MacBook Pro? I'd love to hear your thoughts on which would be better for casual users between the two.
good work..student thinking of getting this for school..13 or 11?
Of course the Macbook air is enough for a student/casual user. What would a casual user need a core I7 and 1GB graphics card for? Nothing really... I just got a MBA 2012 and absolutely love it, I'm going to university in September and it is absolutely exact what I wanted - not what I needed. I could get by at uni with a £350 Windows laptop but I like the design of the MBA and the feel of OS X. I only got it because I had the cash to spend and if I could choose a laptop, the MBA would be it.
Thanks for the advice! I decided to purchase a Macbook Air.
I say the Air, (assuming you aren't referencing the Pro Retina) it's got a better display, about the same processing speed as the 13'' Pro (base model & factoring in Turbo Boost), slimmer & lighter design, & basically just everything you need to get you by day by day.
As the guy in the video said, I too would suggest upgrading the RAM to 8GB of memory just in case you might want to do some video-editing (or something similar) with it in the future.
Very well said. Great Review. 2 weeks with the stock MBA now and I love it.
No Nicky is right..... Having the hyper threading only shows a difference in rendering and photo editing. Also anything else that would utilize those 4 more virtual cores, you could use it on.
This was a great review. I want to purchase a MBA. But I don't know which one to purchase. Would the high-end MBA with 256GB, 1.8Ghz, 4GB ram good enough for website development, graphic design (Illustrator & Photoshop), Word processing and other basic task, or should I upgrade to 2.0Ghz and 8GB of ram.
I'm a computer science major and looking into this computer.
Does the Mac Book air save a lot of energy as compared to a gaming desktop? Also, can it play Runescape HD @ full settings? Yes, I'm a nerd... and i love myself for it. Thanks for the help.
I'm surprising myself by sounding old...but eight years ago when I bought my first laptop it only had 60gb. If you take a lot of photos, dl videos (w/netflix/youtube/hulu who needs to?), have an extremely extensive music collection...you'll need external storage. These days they're cheap and really portable so two years in if you need one, do it then. The trick is to buy what you need now, not necessarily four years down the line. For college you'll be fine.
how's the battery life? And, the "fan"...is it that destructive or not at all? Does it also overheat fast with room temperature? Please let me know as I am also confused whether to get the Air or the Pro non retina. Will just be using it for regular stuff - no gaming/heavy duties involved. please let me know. Thanks in advance:)
Would you suggest the 13" Air or 13" Pro. I'm a college student and I'm planning on going into the field of art. Lets say one of my art courses required certain programs such as Photoshop or something similar, would the Air be able to handle it. The Air is just so thin and portable but does it perform at a similar rate to the regular Macbook Pros?
Hey thnx for the review.. ive just got a question is, does the processor really matters in the speed of the computer .. Infact will there be any difference in the browsing speed between the i5,1.8ghz processor and i7,2.0ghz processor. need some advice before purchasing it.
OS X does something called Supersampling that does pixel doubling throughout the interface. It's an improvement in the way the iPad 2 -> iPad 2012 was an improvement. You do have the option for extra screen real estate if you want it though I wouldn't recommend it all the time, it will hurt your eyes.
I am going into my first year of college and I have been debating if I should get the MacBook Pro 13 inch or the MacBook Pro 15 inch. I am going into business degree, I will be using it for writing, documents and research. Just the basic stuff. Which one would be more suitable? Or should I just go for the 13 inch MacBook air? I am new MacBook and I just can't decide which one is more suited for me.
I have a job and i am saving for the Mac Book for high school. Should I get an Air or Pro
Lew always posts fantastic videos
Upgrading Ram will but very slightly, flash storage shouldn't change anything but it differs from what SSD you want.
Should I invest in a MacBook Pro 2011 or MacBook Air 2011
I and thinking of buying one of these and i got a question is this good for browsing the web and watching TH-cam videos? Also the occasional Render/Editing and Photoshop? :) And thanks ahead
Hey, i've been up in the air between this and the new pro....I'm still on the fence about buying this over the pro. I'm a gamer and I know the pro comes stock with an upgraded graphics card, but this does not....will this be able to handle gaming with just the onboard graphics card?? That's honestly my biggest concern and is what is keeping me from buying this over the pro....suggestions?
incredible how well you recognized what sort of macbook the most need. And i definitely agreed with your arguments, but for me i want a 15 inch model, and this is only given in the new macbook pro. If there be a 15 inch macbook air this would be mine, but there isn't. 13 Inch is too small for photos and video editing i think....
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Would you recommend the 11" or the 13" MacBook air
I'm planning to invest in a Macbook Air (2.0 i7, 8gb, 512gb ssd)
Is that enough for school and light editing?
Or should I go for a PC with that price point?
Loving the glass chairs
hey LU, or Loo wtvr! when are you going to do the 15" Retina MacBook Pro unboxing? got any bucks to pick that up?
Great informative video, can't be explained any better. Thank You very much for your time!
great review. i'm looking at picking one of these up for some adobe indesign work. how would the 128gb storage and the 4 gigs of ram perform? i'm totally cool with using cloud storage to supplement some space, but i don't want to get stuck with a half-assed pc.
Exactly what I was thinking... Thank you... Now I feel better about purchasing a mac air 13"
Good, honest (helpful) review. Thanks.
you can upgrade the flash storage in the air and the macbook pro retina display version. thats about it.
you know what it´s so funny see you in 2012
I like the way you talked.. Great one Lew! :)
i just got my macbook air and i have no complaints :) i needed it for college so i will be using photoshop, illustrator and word mostly, i upgraded the ram to 8gb so it wouldn't lag or anything but i got a HUGE discount because I'm a student so the price was very good (for an apple product). to anybody who is wondering weather to go for a macbook air or pro i would go for the air because it is crazy fast (photoshop loads in about 3 seconds) its sexy and its way cheaper than the pro.
Nice advice Lou, good job.
hey man what do you think about the macbook pro 13 inch ??
what do you plan on using it for?
Lou - you've been beaten by your Scottish counterpart theunits3 in comparing the base model MBA 13'' to the Retina MBP. Anyway, I still look forward to your comparison video between MBA and Retina MBP. The retina screen on the MBP is lush and for me it's between that the the ultra lightness of the MBA. Can't seen to decide.
I'm torn between the macbook air and the macbook retina. Simply because, I probably could get by with the air, but a new air is €1250 here in Ireland, and a refurbished macbook retina from apple is €1319. Which do you reccomend?
Nice video and what type of dining set you have?
this might be a typical question but I really need your help !I'm a junior high school student, now I'm using macbook white mid 2009 and planning to change it.should I buy this new macbook air or the old macbook pro ? (I don't really like the price of the retina display one,it doesn't make sense) I used my laptop to surf the internet, microsoft office, some editing with photoshop, garageband, and maybe some mini games.any suggestion please ? :(
A very good and useful review.
nice video... I was expecting some reviews about battery life.
Great Video!!! I was looking for a review comparing the 2 computers. I actually just got a macbook air 13' with 256gb and love it.
Nice review man, I'm thinking about replacing my 07' MBP with the 13" Air with the i5 and 8GB (and potentially the 256 SSD) Only intensive tasks I'll use it for are lightroom/photoshop CS6 with 20mbish Raw files and potentially some video editing (probably iMovie) with 1080p DSLR files. It seems like it'll be able to handle these fine? Nothing is for pro-use or anything just hobbies.
Awesome I want to buy a MacBook which one should I get MacBook air 13" or MacBook pro 13" for school
great review man
Get the pro. For roughly the same price give or take $100, you have a lot more capabilities regarding ports and more advanced processing power, specifically towards gaming. Although I myself have the air which i use as my main computer and i have never regretted it, the pro is an official mobile powerhouse, desktop-replaceable, with all the ports and specs you will ever need, even if it's just a once-a-year type thing. Good luck mate!
Hi "Unboxtherapy" First of all, sorry for my bad English. I really like your style of a review! Thank you very much for this video, and also the unboxing video is done in a good style. I also gonna buy a Macbook. And my question is: do you find a 13inch screen not to small? That's the only reason why i don't know wich one to buy. I also wanted play little games of the Mac apps store, can this macbook air handle that? Does the fans going to make not to much noise? Again, thank you very much!:-)
i am deciding which macbook to buy, pro or air, in the 13 inch models. Both laptops for low end and high end cost the same. i already i own an iMac but i need a laptop for school. Im worried that if i got a pro id start to underuse my imac and it would become a waste. But then again if i decided to get an air it would be a waste of money as i could get a better laptop for the same price. which laptop should i get? thanks
Great review, very helpful
Great review!
OK, I will make sure I do that. I really want the 13 inch Retina Pro to come out. it would be the perfect laptop as it has the lower price of the air but still the design and graphics and things of the pro. I will definitely get the 13 inch Pro if it comes out October or November or even December.
Hey, I had a Mac for 6 years, it was the old Macbook and its hard drive went out. The people at the Mac Store told me that they don't make parts for my computer anymore. My wife and I are teachers, we don't edit anything on video or anything like that, we just surf the internet, watch tv shows and use microsoft office for work. Should we get a pro or a air? What would you recommend? Or a Dell or HP? lol
