Marcelo was my bishop when I came back from my mission. I was already struggling with my faith but never told Marcelo about it. We’re still friends, and I love their honesty about their struggles. We made a FaceTime call when I found out about their channel and talked a lot sharing our struggles with our faith.

Honesty is what I value most as well. For forty years I have given my absolute all to the church and early this year when I discovered church history I too felt so betrayed. The church could not answer its own temple question about being honest in your dealings but I always could. Thank you Mormon Stories and Marcelo and Sandra for your courage. It’s such a lonely place to find yourself in and I also couldn’t find anyone willing to leave the 99 to help me. These podcasts have been such a blessing to not feel alone.
I stepped away from the church when I was in Idaho Falls. I didn't know Marcelo very well, but we did have a beer at Buffalo Wild Wings one time, and that is a fond memory. Marcelo is a kind, genuine human :)
I love these guys ... Marcelo reminds me of John in his gentleness, and Sandra is just all heart. I usually watch these longer interviews over a couple of days, but this one I couldn't stop.
I too, have no problem with watching in segments if necessary because I much prefer the long form. Just like with something like religion, I want the whole story and if it takes a while to tell it, I'm more than happy to patiently learn.
This interview with Marcelo and Sandra was so fantastic. The honesty and authenticity was just shining out of the screen. My heart sank when I heard Sandra was virtually ignored in a new country with small children. So glad she has real friends and a real community now.
Never Mormon follower of Mormon Stories here. Losing faith is difficult to process, but I'm glad that this couple came out better on the other end of their faith journey.
This one was fascinating for me because I'm Catholic- have been all my life, went to a Catholic college & I'm about to get married into the Catholic church. IMO it's crazy the extra stuff the Mormon church makes LDS people do that just has nothing to do with loving others & being a Christian
yayyy! as a never mormon from sao paulo who lives fairly close to the temple, i was always so curious about brazilian mormons. always hoped one of them would end up on mormon stories!
This is great! I love hearing from Brazilians. I was a missionary there from 88-90 in the São Paulo south mission. I served in sao Vicente which is close to Santos. The amazing small world of Mormonism.
What a beautiful interview! I'm so inspired by the kindness and compassion Sandra and Marcelo demonstrated toward everyone they met, including in the moments where they were being penalized for telling the truth or asking for honest answers to their questions. I want to meet them if I ever go to Brazil. Let's make this interview a Mormon Stories classic!
Marcelo and Sandra, I am not LDS and never have been, but I have a friend of life whose is and I love her (and her family) and you've helped me so much to learn about so much of her beliefs, and it's okay!!!! Thank you for your love and honesty...
This couple is so amazing! I love their passion and expression of their emotions. Also, they are so brilliant and well studied. I have never been a Mormon and live somewhere where that religion is very rare (Chicago), but I was completely captivated by this story ♥️

Wonderful episode. I also converted as an adult and was baptized in 2 weeks, and was considered a "golden investigator." Decades later, after much therapy, it became apparent that I'd joined after severe trauma, and the missionaries got me at a vulnerable time in my life. As a convert, I ONLY changed my life, my beliefs, my goals and visions for myself because I thought it was TRUE. To go through all of that and find out decades later, at this late age, that I'd been duped, has been shocking and difficult, to say the least. But, I follow truth, and integrity took me out.
Love this couple and am so happy for their new freedom and the new community they support and those who support them. What a blessing for the Brazilian community and American community to have this family. Good interview Jon!
Hello John and members on the panel today. Great interview and great talks from everyone. I enjoyed listening to you all. And John I am looking forward to upcoming videos. Thank you.
I really appreciate this interview. I am a long time former LdS/Mormon member/teenage convert, but since 1990 I have been with Community of Christ. I am a gay man now married to a Brazilian man. We live in Sao Paulo not far from the first temple built in Brazil in 1978. It's been difficult for me to understand the culture of Mormonism here in Brazil. Because of my limited Portuguese ability. And because I have been outside of Mormonism/LdS church for decades. I am an elder in Community of Christ somewhat involved with attempting to increase the presence of Community of Christ in here in Brazil.
What a great interview! I really enjoyed getting to know this brave & sincere couple, even if only a little. I’m sure there’s more to them than their church journey, especially after disengagement.

i think mormonism attracts a lot of good people with good hearts, good will and good work ethic. a desire to do good. just know that as you walk away from mormonism you are taking back your power and have all your beautiful qualities to create good in the world as you wish.
That would be shocking to read Brigham Young's racist rhetoric after Marcelo had such faith in the church and what they were telling him. Huge betrayal.

Here me OUT! I lived in Brazil some 20 years ago and went to the English speaking wards. I saw that the LDS church was a HUGE BENFIT for most Brazilians. To Be honest the LDS church worked better in BRAZIL than the USA. They weren't so STRICT with all the rules but they were GOOD PEOPLE!! So many Brazilians were poor and the church gave them an opportunity to go on a mission leave their Poor FAVELA and get paid by the lds church to preach the gospel..... that got Education benefits through BYU.. You ALL need to know that the LDS church in BRAZIL is FRIENDLY they didn't SHAME DISCIPLINE (excommunicate) & condemn as much as the USA they were fun loving people!!!! they come to Headquarters/Vatican and you get EXED!! same story told
There is a lot of truth in what you said about how the church benefits people in Brazil. I don’t think this gives them license to lie though! Many people make huge sacrifices they wouldn’t feel like they have to, had they known the truth about the church. Others are abused by leaders they were trained to never criticize, etc. With regards the church being lighter, that is changing. The church is gradually imposing its Utah ways more and more!
@@mribeiro75 Yes I agree to me the GOSPEL of christ is true leaders always SUCK!! Once elder Oaks dies it will get better just watch. I love Joseph but the devil has always been inside the church with men abusing power. Religion and church is still good. Belongong to a community is goo. I saw the catholic church in Brazil was very good it surprised me. You don't see that in the United states.
1:38:29 exactly John the church dos not respect at all! That’s how I was feeling! I was just being ignored all the time except for the curiosity of some returned missionaries who was served in Brazil. It was a challenge to me . But obviously so much pressure to be still . I’m glad I don’t have this pressure anymore! I’m free John! ❤ thanks for the wonderful work.

Great episode!

Vamos! Servi minha missão em Cabo Verde, mas tenho muitos amigos Brasileiros. Precisamos mais informação da igreja em português

Me encanta que haya una visión de la iglesia fuera de USA ❤
If the prophet is God's representative on Earth and the prophet is racist then God is racist . And if you say no God is not racist then why would he choose a prophet that he knows is racist? Why promote someone that doesn't share your beliefs?

Sandra, I did the exact same thing at my first confession! 😂
