I love how canonically, this entire thing about every boss in Alexander going Voltron like this is something that the Wandering Minstrel just completely made up.
It's only made up after the first time you told him about it, which was brute justice in A8 and was real.

I like to think of the Ultimate fights just being the version of the fight we were supposed to lose (aka like the time line where the illumanati win, or a time line where Bahamut fully recovered), and because we the players are stubborn as fuck, in that time line we abuse the power of the echo till we win

I came for the music and then I watched the end and I was like "Oh shit did they just wipe?" then he died to the DoT and I nearly lost it.

@@ROBDEWAND the way the enrage works is that Perfect Alexander will place panels that the party needs to stand in one-by-one to presumably avoid killing the rest of the party with a failed mechanic. Standing in those panels stops each party member as it hits them, before eventually the entire party is halted. Then Perfect Alexander casts its enrage, which essentially confirms the total halting of time for everything in that area except itself. No damage, no death, just a total stop. After a few seconds to really drink in the screen that shows how close you were to victory, the fight restarts.
If it were an instant restart from the moment the cast activates, they wouldn't have killed Alexander with those DoTs - it's still amazing to think about.
"Everything seemed to be going so well, it was one of the most difficult fights I've ever experienced but we seemed to be winning"

6:38 I absolutely love how, based on the mouse movement at the end, you can tell even the player couldn't believe what just happened.
I love how triumphant this song feels. It’s like the game saying “you got this far now finish it!”

agree and i 100% think that had to be intentional, at the very end when the cages are falling down, the way that triumphant sounding melody swells and crescendos they clearly expect THIS MOMENT SPECIFICALLY to be the moment that the players clear the fight and want that feeling of accomplishment to be that much more elevated by the incredible composition they put together **chef's kiss**
@@MajorReynolds92 It's amazing how they timed ALL of the used songs for the whole fight, especially the part that you mentioned. It really makes you feel the victory.
Its true because this phase is easily the easiest in the fight. It isn't uncommon for someone to clear the final phase the first time seeing it after studying it. If you focus, this phase and song is truly a victory lap. I love this fight so much.

holy crap you're right
One year late, but a good keybind layout will help massively. I play 16 of the 17 proper jobs without referring to the hotbar, which is only possible because the buttons make sense to me and I can logically recall where is what bound to. I highly suggest you play around with different setups until one clicks. It's worth the relearning.

When I first saw I said "this is one part cool two parts were fucked"
It's a real shame that Primals are dangerous to the world, especially Alexander who sucks aether like a damn caprisun, this theme makes Alexander sound heroic, and having him show up mid-fight against say, bahamut or some other big bad kaiju primal would be sick as hell
Im sorry, I know this is a late response, but your remark about caprisun made me almost spit out my tea. XD
I mean he kinda is. He undermines the illuminati and then tests you to see if he can leave the world in your hands. He's the one primal in the game that is at odds with his summoners, even if his hands are mostly tied in dealing with them
That exact thing happened in FF9 (Bahamut vs Alexander) Even with dated graphics that cut scene still gives me the chills.
90 percent sure he'd just win against any other primal you'd put him against save maybe Hydaelyn and Zodiark lol. The only primal that decides its best to find a way to take himself out of commission because he's TOO strong.
@@SilverVibes Yeah, imo of all the primals we have faced Alexander is the strongest so far. Having the ability to control time and space, and change reality like an actual god is so OP. Even Alexander himself knows how dangerous he is so he decided to just "pls kill me, i'm very very harmful"

In the lore of ff (not only ff14) there's a version of alexander with the legs, it dates way before this ultimate was made. For example ff13 has one of them and Hope is it's owner
I do like how AI's realizing that there's no way forward and realizing that "the only winning move is not to play" has actual basis in real neural networks, and that translates to Alexander's enrage.
It reminds me of current gen Chess bots playing each other where there will reach a point where both will aknowledge moving any further will put them at a disadvantage, so they both will just cycle the same piece repeatedly between 2 squares till the game stalemates

This song is actually so perfect in every way wow. It really captures the tone of the fight as Alexander is such a god-like being. The music almost feels like it's telling a story of how Alexander is taking everything he has to stop you, and at some moments it sounds like he's observing you and testing you to see exactly what might is needed to be thrown at you, and then makes predictions based on what he thinks you'll do, and then gives it his all to defeat you. Then in the final moment he reasons that he can't defeat you and tries to stalemate with a temporal prison, and that message of changing fate is amazing. This fight is so beautiful, and is my favorite Ultimate fight both mechanically and artistically.
Not to mention how throughout the whole fight the music syncs up with it beautifully. The first and third elemental debuff swaps are timed perfectly, the way Metal slows down when Nisi is resolved, how it comes back when Double Rocket Punch hits the tanks, how the music charges up when Brute starts his Super Jump... how Rise lyrics come in after the tank busters end, how it slows down during Inception, builds up during Super Jump, and comes back when Alex reappears. How it's tense and faded during Wormhole, allowing players to focus, only to get more active as the mechanics pile up, building up to the shared stack, and once again, the lyrics return when Alex returns. Then the final chorus during J-Waves is electrifying.
It's gonna take a lot to top this. TEA might go down as the best fight in the game, forever.
just a note way later which I was excited about, have you also noticed how cool the music and instruments are and how well they fit thematically? a shit ton of brass, there's a sound that is just like steam releasing, and at one point it's got almost the exact same rhythm as a chugging train and hydraulics, and obviously you also have the alarm noises as well. it's so good.
Turns out Alexander was keeping his legs inside Brute Justice this whole time!
And part of his arms, and a sizable chunk of his chest as well.
Perfect Alexander's transformation cutscene is the epitome of: I'm fluent in over 6 million forms of kicking your ass.

I love how this song encompasses both Locus and Rise. Who'd have thought that oddly soothing electronica and rapidfire scat singing about goblins would translate so well to an epic orchestra?
Well it is an upgraded version of Mobius from phase 1 of A12, though that track only got to play for about 2min before Rise jumps in. I'm really glad they upgraded Mobius for this fight... though even in A12 it was always a case of "Do these kind of silly electric tracks really deserve this more traditionally somber and epic version?"
It incorporates a bit of Metal in there too! I've loved tracking the leitmotifs in this game, and this song made me especially giddy.
One of the finest compositions/performances in the entire soundtrack scene. Soken is a brilliant, brilliant force. A once in a generation talent we're lucky enough to experience in real time. A living Warrior of Light. Here's to a long career.

I watch this video everyday. This is the most epic boss fight I've ever seen in a MMO - I mean the fact that the static kill Perfect Alexander in a pinch when the time ends. Totally epic.

I love everything about this fight. The bosses. The mechanics. The music. Just everything. I can’t wait to be able to tackle this on with my group. The jails are a roller coaster of emotions. You spend months grinding this with your group. You improve, optimize, strategize and give it everything ya got. Then at the very end one by one your static members are being jailed and they can’t help you so you push and push giving it everything you have until the very end. You clear. 😭

Is a Time God, can summon copies of himself, is Voltron, is a world unto himself like Mechanus, and Autocthon, more Prime than Optimus Prime, has the most bombastic Final Fantasy drum and trumpet soundtrack ever. Fuck, is he not the coolest fucking Robot ever?

In FFIX they are completely different entities. I actually wish the remaster of IX would have added new content like a way to restore alexander that would have been cool.

Ark is the Terra to Alexander's Gaia.
Both are immensely powerful Ediolons in the image of living fortresses, but from different planets in service to their own respective summoners.
@@Zayindjejfj Is Ark really an Eidolon? For some reason I thought it was linked to the creation of the Invincible somehow (proto-Invincible?), since it originally resided in Oeilvert where there's also a room full of airship concepts leading to Invincible's creation.
Eidolons are also created by the planet's crystal as it's defenders, but Terra is dying so can it really produce one? When you summon it, it doesn't really manifest, and just comes to Gaia from Terra's moon.
@@Rettomus Last time I checked it was essentially Terra's version of Alexander.
An Eidolon of legend in the form of a living fortress.
I figured it was just preserved and stood as guardian for whatever Garland/Kuja wanted.
We know it's an Eidolon because you can actually use him as a summon.
He's been referenced to have the longest summoning cutscene in the entire game and I think in the entire franchise. Him coming from Terra is supposed to show that he is not a creation of Gaia, but of Terra as you mentioned. That's just my idea at least.
Ark could've been some kind of tool to create airships in its image? I'm not sure, I figured he was just their to guard the place.
I might be wrong about a few things. Since it's been a minute since I've checked factual sources. I'm just going off of memory.

Square's really been going hard on the space battlefields this expansion and I love it so much. Even after the amazingness of Hades this is the most ridiculously final boss enemy yet.
Also let's just take a minute to process that we get to fight a MULTI-WINGED ROMAN GLADIATOR MEGAZORD GOD OF TIME.

The one greatest thing FFXIV ever did was these encounters. It feels so good to dodge everything in a full party encounter.
The ultimate raids really are the "ultimate" love letter to the most dedicated players. They simultaneously take you back in time to when you first experienced the content while also taking everything to an amazing new level.
I really adore how you can tell that this track is a live orchestral recording as opposed to the orinigal version of this that played in the first phase of Alexander Prime. I like this one a lot better!
There's a lot of details added to this version that weren't in the original, too.
- Muted trumpet marcato during the first section
- Bass drum
- More focus on brass (specifically, a LOT more trumpet and trombone)
- Woodwinds and strings backing the piano during the piano "solo" instead of another piano
- French horns are more up front in the mix during the final section
- Cello section actually sounds like a section during the intro

This is some absolute top tier raiding content right here. I missed out on a lot of HW raiding due to just how bad I was at the game and the overall difficulty of finding groups on my server at the time. Currently got to BJ+CC and this is turning into easily one of my favorite fights in the game, if not in gaming in general.
I think we would could all agree a toy collection of XIV's alexander dungeon would be amazing, especially if they could transform and even combine to make Perfect Alexander.
As a mecha fan, I’d love this! But realistically speaking, while Brute Justice and Cruise Chaser would be easier to design, designing versions that also combine with Alexander would be rather difficult. Especially seeing as some of that wonderful combination sequence is what we call “anime magic”: mass-shifting of multiple units, and segments of robot seemingly extending out from and retracting into almost nothing (which I’m not talking about Alexander absorbing Brute Justice and growing its component limbs, I mean like the leg units grow wider and gain an extra toe each). Unfortunately a physical Alexander the Assembled would be resigned to being a partsforming combiner.
Though I’d still buy it if it had good articulation and could hold itself up. Hell, you could make bank between repaints: one that’s the different colors of each component involved like your standard megazord, and one that’s the unified white and gold as Al grows wings - that latter one could easily be a box set.
Just when I thought Alexander was already my favorite fight and theme.

Imo this is the PERFECT theme for the final phase of an ultimate, it’s so fucking triumphant, it’s a real “let’s bring it home” kind of theme. There’s no feeling in the whole game quite like your heart pounding and your hands shaking as you cleanly execute the mechanics one by one with this playing in the background

I just realized that the transformation reference isn't TTGL but it's Digimon Xros Wars, the final episode where the main Digimon protagonist combines with his other buddies is the same as this where their color parts are visualised and then he turns full gold/white similar how this boss is transforming. Very nice sneaky reference you got there SE.
Also forgot to mention both grew wings at their backs at the end of the transformation.

Love FF or hate it, you have to admire the effort they put into the soundtracks of the game. Easily the best sound tracks in ANY mmo or even any game.
Nobou can literally take over an entire opera house and just play video game music with his orchestra and, if he wanted, have them play for an entire week. That's so fucking gangster.

@@stevenlucas6029 Taking on few tracks here and there, 90% of FFXIV songs are created by Masayoshi Soken at least since ARR onwards. Uematsu were main composer of the music back in 1.xx but after that he mostly made all the expac trailer song (Dragonsong, Revolution) maybe except for Shadowbringers in which Soken composed himself and contributed few tracks here and there albeit it is far in between. So, yeah, Moebius and its incarnation is by Soken.
